Established in 1975, Girard has long-standing grower relationships to source the best Napa Valley fruit to produce a handcrafted range of wines. Sourcing and blending are key to capturing all the nuance and flavors of Napa Valley.

Every lot is independently sorted, custom-fermented and appropriately aged to develop varietal specificity in flavors and textures without losing balance. Winemaker Glenn Hugo oversees every step, taking all the time we need to find subtlety and character.

Our Calistoga winery is at the forefront of sustainability with proven practices such as a low-carbon footprint, nitrogen capture, solar array, water conservation, and energy conservation. We’re always open to new ideas, including our pioneering efforts with conscientious, fusion barrel-aging. Our fusion barrels add complexity and layers by integrating 1/3 each of Hungarian, French and American oak.

“Much like we are rooted in Napa Valley's history, our winemaking team is rooted in Girard's history.”

Winemaker | Glenn Hugo Winemaker Glenn Hugo started his career with Girard in 2006 as a harvest intern and was quickly promoted to Cellar Master and Assistant Winemaker before earning the title of Girard Winemaker. Glenn's background in the restaurant industry has led to his artisanal approach to winemaking with a focus on wine as part of the culinary experience. A native Texan, Glenn developed his passion for wine over 12 years in the restaurant industry before moving to Napa Valley with his wife, Pam, in 2003 to pursue his dream of becoming a winemaker. Glenn's winemaking experience is concentrated in Napa Valley and includes early assignments with Provenance Vineyards, where he learned from Napa legend Tom Rinaldi, and hands-on experience at Sedna Winery and Fleury Estate Winery. You could say he caught the bug. As the General Manager of The Bounty Hunter Wine Bar in downtown Napa, Glenn soon met Marco DiGiulio, Chief Winemaker for Vintage Wine Estates, and began his career with Girard. Glenn's philosophy is simple: wine is to be shared with friends and family; it is a living and breathing expression that constantly evolves and instills memories.

Head Of Education | Theo Rutherford Theo Rutherford, the Head of Education for Deutsch Family Wine & Spirits, including Girard Winery, has been working in the wine industry for over 20 years. He has worked in virtually every capacity of the industry: as a bartender, line cook, grape picker, wine producer, sommelier, beverage director and brand ambassador. Theo began his career as a bartender in Washington, D.C., and fell in love with the wine industry when he joined the wine production team at Frescobaldi in Tuscany. He served as Beverage Director and Sommelier at several Michelin star restaurants and James Beard nominated chefs in Washington, D.C. Theo loves giving back to the industry and is a writer and contributor to a number of D.C. publications. To deepen his knowledge, Theo has spent many hours working harvests at Girard, The Calling and at Marchesi de’ Frescobaldi in Tuscany. Theo is a proud Washington, D.C. native and when he is not traveling around the world to share his knowledge and passion for wine, he still resides there. In his spare time, he tastes wine from around the world, is an avid sports fan and enjoys the company of his pit bull, Apollo.

Key Wines

Girard’s top blend — Artistry — is an artistic blend of five classic Bordeaux varieties sourced across Napa Valley, blended to create a harmonious and singular expression in every vintage. Winemaker Glenn Hugo builds Artistry at the same time as Girard Cabernet Sauvignon, tinkering with vineyard lots and varietals to find the right balance in every vintage. Taste them side-by-side to see how they complement each other.

2019 Artistry Napa Valley

2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley Varietal: 81% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Petit Verdot, 4% Merlot, 4% Malbec, 4% Cabernet Franc SRP: $40

Varietal: 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Merlot, 8% Cabernet Franc, 7% Malbec, 5% Petit Verdot

This Cabernet Sauvignon hails from select vineyards across the Napa Valley, including sites in St. Helena, Rutherford, Atlas Peak, Yountville, Diamond Mountain, Calistoga, Mt. Veeder and Pope Valley. Girard has over four decades of Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon experience and every vintage is an opportunity to explore Napa’s expression of this noble grape.

We source Cabernet Sauvignon from St. Helena, Oakville, Diamond Mountain and Pope Valley, areas for our Artistry blend, treasured for their ability to offer ripe tannins and bold flavors. Merlot from Yountville and Rutherford lends lush texture and black fruit flavors, while Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot from Pope Valley provide floral aromatics and layered fruit flavors. Petit Verdot is often the latest ripening variety, and it contributes to the palate weight, tannin structure and floral aromatics of the final blend. The mélange offruit, hailing from both hillside and valley floor vineyards unites in a singular, focused expression.

Key Wines

We believe that experimentation is a pillar of great winemaking. Girard Old Vine Zinfandel and Petite Sirah are among the first in Napa Valley aged in fusion barrels to develop smooth tannins and nuanced character.

2018 Old Vine Zinfandel Napa Valley Varietal: 90% Zinfandel, 9% Petite Sirah, 1% Grenache SRP: $25 Sourced from select vineyards, including Morgan vineyard in the southeastern area of Napa Valley where the cooler climate affords grapes brisk acidity and bright fruit flavors. Another key source, Godward vineyard in Calistoga, is planted with older vines, and adds deep wells of flavor and polished character to our Old Vine Zinfandel.

2018 Petite Sirah Napa Valley Varietal: 90% Petite Sirah, 10% Zinfandel SRP: $30

The fruit for this Petite Sirah was sourced from old-vine plantings in the Calistoga and Pope Valley, areas of Napa Valley where myriad of soil types coupled with warmer temperatures help the grapes develop rich and balanced character.

Key Wines Girard Chardonnay and Girard Sauvignon Blanc are sourced from top vineyards to deliver bold flavors and textures.

2019 Chardonnay Carneros

2021 Sauvignon Blanc Napa Valley

Varietal: 100% Chardonnay

Varietal: 100% Sauvignon Blanc

SRP: $49

SRP: $18

Our inaugural release of Chardonnay from the cool Carneros region is a blend from two of our estate vineyards, made from the famous Chardonnay clones: Dijon, Wente & Robert Young. Each lot was handpicked, crushed and pressed, then racked, blended and aged 10 months in 100% French oak. The nose is zippy with citrus aromas of lemon and tangerine, stone fruits and toasted oak. The medium-weight palate shows refined minerality and oak with a ripe palate of pear, lemon cream and fresh apple that finishes with rich baking spice and crème brûlée flavors.

The fruit for our Sauvignon Blanc was sourced from select vineyards; one in southeast Napa Valley which lends the wine vibrant citrus notes, and the majority of the blend from a special vineyard in St. Helena, just across the road from the Culinary Institute of America, which affords the wine luscious tropical fruit flavors — the hallmark of our Napa Valley Sauvignon Blanc.

Sustainability Our winery was built for innovative winemaking with a focus on sustainability. Often called "ambitiously efficient,” our state-of-the-art winery in Calistoga, completed in 2018, employs cutting edge energy saving initiatives allowing our team to practice traditional winemaking techniques. Respecting the land does not stop in the vineyards and our facility is another way we respect the heritage of Napa Valley's terroir. We place tremendous value on care and stewardship for the environment and attention to the well-being of the many people involved in creating our wine. We treat our employees, contractors, and business partners with respect and dignity. Bringing joy to people through our wine should not come at undue expense to the environment or to the people who comprise our team.

Clean Energy from the Sun: Solar accounts for 95% of our energy needs. 20-Ton Press: Allows us to reduce the number of press cycles, with an overall reduction of water, chemicals and time required for sanitization. Night Cooling: Allows us to retain cool temperatures, reducing the need for AC. Smart Doors: To avoid loss of cooling and humidification. High-Tech Barrel Washing: Computerized barrel washers use high-pressure, low-flow heads and recycled ozonated water to minimize water use.

Atlas Peak: Sourced from the Probst Vineyard, an AVA with volcanic soils and average temperatures that are 10 degrees cooler than the valley floor. The result: lovely fruit concentration, acidity and tannins.

Calistoga: Ample sunshine, high diurnal temperature swings and volcanic soils in this AVA help retain lively natural acid. Some very special old-vine vineyards combine in this AVA to help us craft some unexpected gems with depth, focus and character.

St. Helena: St. Helena has long been one of our favorite places to source exceptional grapes. The fruit sourced is consistently of high-quality, well-balanced and well-endowed with vivacity and character. It comprises the backbone of our premium blends, contributes strong to our Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon, our Artistry Red Blend, and our Sauvignon Blanc, just to name a few.

Diamond Mountain: We selected this region for two simple reasons: ability to produce age-worthy wines and intense, iron rich volcanic soils. Specifically with Cabernet Sauvignon, wines from this location tend to be bigger, bolder, intense and capable of cellaring.

Rutherford: The region that first showed Glenn Hugo that “not all regions are created equal.” We source primarily from “Triple R”, capitalizing on the famous Rutherford dust, to deliver a signature, powder-like texture.

Oakville: A uniquely different appellation, this AVA has a cult following for its tendency to yield wines with bold tannins, dense fruit and earthy notes.

Carneros: “Los Carneros” also known as Carneros (Spanish for “Rams”) is an AVA which includes parts of both Sonoma and Napa counties. The cooler climate has made Carneros attractive for the cultivation of cooler climate varietals like Chardonnay. Our inaugural release of Chardonnay, the 2019 vintage, will be sourced from our own vineyard in Carneros.

Our Vineyards Napa Valley is steeped in tradition and built on the hard work of families of growers who pioneered this acclaimed winegrowing region. Our vintner Pat Roney and winemaker Glenn Hugo, have forged decades-long relationships with growers throughout the valley. We have cultivated friendships with the families whose ancestors were the first to plant in Napa and whose vineyards command our respect. Each vintage, we are proud to select fruit from the best sites ranging from mountain-top Cabernet Sauvignon to valley-floor Sauvignon Blanc, to reflect wines that are authentically Napa.

Yountville: Though home to some of the earliest vineyard plantings in Napa Valley, this AVA was is established in 1999. Diurnal temperature swings are a big factor in retaining freshness in the grapes while attaining optimal ripeness. Fruit from this AVA can be found in our Artistry Red Blend, as well as our Malbec.

Pride is at the heart of our relationships: these winegrowers are proud of their fruit and what we do with it. We acknowledge their efforts by respecting their name, their business and the grapes they grow by producing wine that can only be described as authentic and consistent.
