From the Principal awarded an OP1 and, importantly, 52% an OP of 1 to 5. These are tremendous results and they reflect the hard work of the students, quality teaching by the staff, and a strong partnership with the parents. The 2017 Year 12 cohort have begun this year with the same determination and focus.

Welcome to the first edition of The Terracian for 2017. Yet again this edition explores the diversity and richness of the Terrace Family and the talent that exists within our community. A key aspect of Terrace is the focus on teaching and learning. The Year 12 students of 2016 worked extraordinarily hard throughout their final year and were rewarded with outstanding results. Of the cohort of 234 students, 31 were

One of the strengths of our great College is the diversity of experiences and talents that exist within our community – both past and present. Within this edition of The Terracian you will see highlights of sporting, cultural, justice and academic experiences of both current and past Terrace students. I congratulate those Terracians who feature in this edition and commend the many others who continue to do great things in their chosen endeavours. In 2017 the College will embark upon a major building campaign.

The project will see the development of a student “Well Being” Centre, where academic, pastoral, campus ministry and counselling services will be centralised into one facility in order to support our students. It is an exciting time for the College. The project is due for completion by the start of the 2019 academic year and will provide an outstanding resource for our students as well as enhancing the physical landscape of the College. I trust the year will continue to progress well for all and I look forward to continuing our connection ‘Moving Forward’ in 2017.

Celebrating academic success On 7 February, the College welcomed back 32 young men from Year 12 2016 to acknowledge their outstanding academic achievements for another year. The Scholars’ Assembly is a wonderful example of the holistic nature of the Terrace experience and a fitting way to celebrate these proud Terrace Gentlemen. Thirty-one students received an OP1 and one student, William Curtain, received the student award for most significant improvement across the year in both results and work ethic. At the assembly, the focus was on friendship, peers and the importance of recognising one’s peers as part of individual success and to give gratitude for their support. Again, the Seniors of 2016 passed on the keys to their success as a scholar to help guide

those following in their footsteps. Each student received a booklet outlining the subjects studied by the scholars and their strategies to receive the outstanding results.

When addressing the assembly, College Dux and OP1 student, Xavier Rui gave this advice to current students:

Let’s talk about reason. Reason is your strategic objective. I think that you have to start with the end clearly in mind. Any objective needs to be realistic and achievable so that you’re not discouraged along the way and you’ve got a fair chance of getting there in the end, provided that you put in the work. So now’s the time to decide what you really want at the end of this year. The College continued its acknowledgement of the academic success of the students

Assembly. The week after the Scholars’ Assembly, 320 young men received medals for their academic success in Semester 2 22% of the student cohort. The assembly also recognised the students from each year level who made significant improvement and who also exhibited a strong work ethic and respect for both their peers and teachers. For the second year in a row, the Queensland Curriculum and Assessment Authority (QCAA) announced a Terrace student as one of their distinguished academic achievers. Tristan Hurree, (GT 2016) was recognised in a ceremony to celebrate the state’s 30 highest achievers.

The student volunteers are offered opportunities to debrief and discuss their experiences

when they return to the College which is another important step in their service to others. Big Brekkie runs five days a week, throughout the year thanks to the dedication of staff, Old Boys and parents who give so generously. Big Brekkie would not be able to continue without the generous support of the wider community. Hyundai, who provided a new van in 2011 and committed another van in 2018, keep the service mobile which is essential for day to day operations. Stanbroke Meats, who donate the kilos of sausages needed every week, have supported thousands of meals for those finding it tough in our community. Big Brekkie relies on the generosity as Hyundai and Stanbroke. Continuing the program means that more students have the opportunity to experience service to others whilst creating an understanding of self and others. When required, the students also raise money through the Lenten Appeal and Fair to buy the eggs and bread needed to make breakfast. Big Brekkie has inspired other schools to provide similar services to the wider community and has also inspired our Old Boys to do the same. Through their service to the Big Brekkie, Old Boys Nicholas Marchesi (GT 2011) and Lucas Patchett (GT 2011) have started their own service with Orange Sky Laundry. No greater compliment can be given than the inspiration to take an idea and move forward with it to provide even more for those in our community in need.

Tracking in a new direction Written by: Ms Tatiana Grigorieva | Athletics Coach More than 3500 track and field athletes of all ages competed in the 2017 Australian Athletics Championships, hosted by the Sydney Olympic Park Athletic Centre. This competition was the inaugural combined Junior and Open aged championships for able-bodied and para-athletes and was held from 26 March to 2 April 2017. Spanning eight days, the 2017 Australian Athletics Championships were the largest annual athletics event in Australia and the OceaniaPacific region and brought together participants of all ages.

The Championship results were outstanding for our four athletes: Oliver Seawright ran a personal best of 4:06:90. This is an improvement of almost three seconds from the start of the season and 8th place. Nick Beal ran a personal best over 100m: 11.08 sec which placed him 11th over all. Unfortunately he didn’t make a final but it was an outstanding performance. Oscar Sullivan, undoubtedly a star of the Track and Field team this year, finished 2nd with a personal best throw of 72.19. This is over the qualifying distance for the Commonwealth Youth Games in the Bahamas. Matthew Mitchell ran the 200m hurdles with a result of 30.74 sec. This is slightly slower than his run at the Queensland Championship but still placed him 10th in Australia for his age group.

Honours beyond rugby Esteemed Old Boy, Michael Lynagh AM, has recently been honoured as ‘Australian of the Year’ in the United Kingdom for 2017. Sir Alexander Downer, Australia’s High Commissioner to the UK, announced the honour at a gala dinner at Australia House in London during Australia Day celebrations in January this year.

Michael attended the College for eight years from Year 5 through to his Senior year in 1981, during which time he distinguished himself as a fine sportsman both on the cricket pitch and the rugby field. He played four years in the 1st XI (Years 9-12) and three years as flyhalf in the 1st XV (Years 10-12). He captained both teams in his Senior year. These were halcyon years for Terrace Rugby. With legendary coach and Old Boy Lester Hampson (GT 1953) at the helm, Terrace won five consecutive GPS Premierships, with Michael contributing to the final three in 1979, 80 and 81. Interestingly, during his time in the 1sts Terrace suffered only one defeat, the very first game Michael played in 1979, at Ipswich Grammar. The home team kicked a penalty goal on the bell to win by one point. Apparently, the experience of losing was not to Terrace’s liking and was not repeated in the ensuing three years. While still at the College, Michael captained an Under 16 Australian team to New Zealand and played for the Australian Schoolboys for two years – he was a member of the undefeated 1981/82 Australian Schoolboys’ team tour to the UK.

8 | The Terracian

Terrace provided the springboard to launch Michael into his stellar rugby career – straight into University A Grade, then onto the Queensland Reds in his third game out of school, and the Wallabies the following year (1983). He played inside centre to Mark Ella in the 1984 grand slam tour of the UK and on Mark’s retirement, he assumed his favoured flyhalf position through to his own retirement from international rugby in 1995. He captained the Wallabies from 1992 to 1995. Apart from the 1984 grand slam

1st XV - Undefeated Premiers 1981

tour, his winning highlights for Australia included two Bledisloe Cup wins in 1986 and 1992, the World Cup win against England at Twickenham in 1991 and of course, scoring that famous try right on the bell at Lansdowne Road Dublin, in the quarter final to take the Wallabies on to that World Cup victory. It has often been said that Michael was a point-scoring machine. He averaged an extraordinary 12.6 points a game over his 72 test matches for Australia. On his retirement, his total of 911 points

was a rugby world record, a total that still stands as the most test match points ever scored by an Australian player. Along the way, he chalked up 1166 points in 100 games for Queensland. Since his retirement in 1995, Michael has resided in England and for a time in Treviso, Italy. He and his Italian wife Isabella have three sons, Louis 16 years, Tom 14 years and Nicolo 9 years old – all sports mad. They live at Richmond, within walking distance from the ‘Home of Rugby’, Twickenham. For nearly two decades, Michael has been a Rugby Analyst on Fox Sports television and at various periods has been a columnist for the London Times. He is employed as the Managing Director of Dow Jones Corporate for Europe, the Middle East and Africa. During a stop-over in Brisbane

in April 2012, Michael was dining with seven of his 1981 Terrace classmates, when he suffered a significant stroke. Ten days in Royal Brisbane’s Intensive Care Unit and an extended rehabilitation period in Brisbane, eventually had him on the plane home to London and his family three months later. He reports being particularly touched when he received an enormous bouquet of flowers and well wishes from Terrace whilst still in recovery mode in Brisbane. Recently Michael published his story in what became a UK top-selling biography entitled ‘Blindsided’ – a reference not only to rugby, but to a permanent left-sided blindness (Hemianopia) residual to the stroke. Since returning to the UK, Michael has been a strong supporter of the Stroke Survivors organisation in England and in 2014 raised

funds by completing the London Marathon for a second time. Michael is not without honours beyond the rugby world. In 1996, he was made a Member of the Order of Australia (AM), was inducted into the Australian Sporting Hall of Fame in 1999 and in 2002, was bestowed with an Honorary Doctorate degree from Griffith University. He may reside on the other side of the globe, but many of the mates he made, laughed with and played with at Gregory Terrace, remain in his life and he in theirs. He indeed feels humbled by having his name grace a College playing field at Tennyson and particularly enjoys receiving his copy of ‘The Terracian’. Congratulations to Michael on his recognition in this year’s awards and his remarkable career, another true Terrace Gentleman.

Michael Lynagh receives his award in London alongside Young Australian of the Year, Suzie Mathers and Honorary Australian of the Year, Sir Michael Parkinson CBE.

Opening Mass and Induction The Year 12 Induction and Opening Mass was once again held at the University of Queensland on 10 February. The mass is an opportunity for the Terrace community to come together and for the Seniors and their families to celebrate. The theme the 2017 Seniors have chosen to follow for this year is ‘18 000 strong’ in recognition of the 18 000 Terrace Gentlemen who have passed through the College gates before them in our proud 143-year history.

Hugh Lunn on Home Ground Well loved author and Terrace Old Boy, Hugh Lunn (GT 1959) has made a shift from writing books to writing a musical. Five years in the making, Home Ground – the State of Origin musical will debut later this year. The story centers around the State of Origin series in the 1970s and follows Queensland Rugby League President and Gregory Terrace Old Boy, Ron McAuliffe (GT 1934) and his desire to resurrect Queensland’s hopes of winning the competition with up and coming star Wally Lewis.

Bradley McCaw and directed by John Senczuk, the musical concentrates on self-respect, state pride, comradeship, tenacity and victory against the odds, with an all Queensland cast. When asked why it is a musical Hugh Lunn replied, It has to be a musical in order to capture the emotions because music can lift the emotions or send them through the floor.

Ron McAuliffe is a Terrace Old Boy, World War Two veteran and Rat of Tobruk, Queensland debater, ran the Stalwell Gift, became a senator and introduced the State of Origin. Hugh Lunn is a triple-Walkley Award winner as a journalist and foreign correspondent and author of numerous books, most of them exploring, highlighting and celebrating what it is to be Australian and even better, to be

David went on to have three sons of his own, Andrew (GT 1995), Cameron (GT 1998) and Nicholas (GT 2002), all who are now life members of the GTOBA. Aileen Stirling, David’s wife was involved in a myriad of activities during the 16 years the boys were at Terrace. She was an inaugural member of the Religious Education Committee and was heavily involved with the Terrace Ladies Group and other committees. Aileen continued her commitment to the TLG with Past Mothers' activities after the boys had graduated. David and Aileen are now proud grandparents of four boys who are enrolled or on the waiting list to attend the College through to 2025. The Stirlings are a family who don’t just attend the College, but have become part of the Terrace Family resulting in a cross generation of involvement. David and his wife are committed Foundation supporters and their gifts have been directed towards the College Bursary program and the Building Fund. Not only are they supporters of the Foundation but also of the College Museum and Archives. David has visited on many occasions and donated memorabilia from his College days, some of which are on display in the Museum. I asked David what he learnt at Terrace and how it shaped him and prepared him for his future path. Firstly, the College itself stood out as a bastion of learning and faith, staffed over the years by some truly great men, Brothers and lay teachers alike. Sure, Doc Campbell

was terrifying to us mere mortals, but he was renowned in education and academic circles as a giant amongst men for his intellect and knowledge. Most of the Brothers at Terrace were strong and great men. These men imbued in us boys a sense of what it meant to be ‘Gentlemen of Terrace’ and all that this appellation entailed. And it seems the same can be said of the teachers of today at Terrace. From an early stage, we learnt to sing the school song ‘Terrace to the Fore’ with great gusto, but as the years passed the words of that great anthem took a deeper relevance in our lives.

Firstly, listen carefully to the words of ‘Terrace to the Fore’, there is a lot of truth there. This will be reinforced if you go into College Hall and look at all the honour boards and photos on the walls and see the men who went before you. Secondly, do not lose contact with the school or your school mates after you leave school. Nurture and grow these associations for they will be a great source of camaraderie and friendship in the future. Join the Old Boys Association, go to Terrace sporting events and go to class reunions, these are just a few

of the ways to maintain contact. And finally, you will get out of Terrace what you put into it. Jealously guard the good name and reputation of Terrace. You have been privileged to attend one of the great educational institutions in the country. No matter how great or how humble your future path, you will always be proud to say that you are a Terrace man and more importantly, a Gentleman of Terrace, and all that it implies.

Terrace back then, and even now, is a very inclusive College. It didn’t matter if you were Dux of the College or class, a GPS sportsman or a pupil who did not excel in sporting or academic activities, the most notable aspect was that this was a place where all boys were equal and cared for each other and it has been my experience that nearly 60 years later, this ethos is still evident in the College today and is indeed amongst the Old Boys, as seen at class reunions and Old Boy functions. David’s career path saw him through many adventures including industrial engineering, banking, merchant banking, family investment management and financial services. He says that while he was not a Rhodes Scholar while at school, Terrace gave him the confidence to pursue his career. David’s advice to future and current Gentlemen of Terrace: David today with the next generation of Stirling Terrace Gentlemen.

Year 5s visit the College Museum As a part of the important process of welcoming and settling in our youngest members of the College, the Year 5 students visited the College Museum in their first week of school to find a sense of place and belonging in the Terrace Family. The students were given a talk on the importance of the Museum in preserving the 143 years of College history and completed a history quiz using the Museum displays. The students left with an understanding that they are now part of the Terrace story, as are the 18 000 Terracians who came before them.

USA Basketball tour 2016 Written by: Mr Sam Mackinnon | Director of Basketball

Terrace Basketball was fortunate to hold our second USA tour in December last year. It presented amazing and unique basketball opportunities for our program and the players. This could not happen without the ongoing support of the College. `

The coaching staff and players travelled for almost three weeks, non-stop, half way around the world to destinations including Cincinnati, St Louis and San Diego. In total, 21 students and five staff made the trip and came away from the tour with a great appreciation for the game of basketball and having learnt the coping mechanisms needed to stay with unfamiliar people. This experience should hold them in good stead for life after Terrace. For the tour we adopted American terminologies and named a “Freshman” and “Junior Varsity” team. The Freshman team was made up of our younger and less experienced basketballers while the Junior Varsity team was comprised of players who will be close to the 2017 1st V squad. The time the teams spent in both Cincinnati and St Louis were very special due to the strong relationships that we share with the

Moeller High School, Cincinnati.

Archbishop Moeller High School and Chaminade College Preparatory School respectively through the College exchange program. The homestay experiences as well as attending class for the day at each school is something our students will remember for the rest of their lives. The relationship that we have with these schools is very special and one that is only further developed by the Basketball tour. The following students had standout individual performances: Junior Varsity: Tyrese Fepuleai, Johnson Eltima, Lachlan Blackburn. While all players contributed in different ways, these three boys showed that they will be ready to contribute in the 2017 1st V team. Freshman: Dominic Walsh, Tom Ayala, Luke Read, Maliq Jackson. Again, these students displayed an ability to be effective against much

older and stronger opposition. It was a great opportunity for these boys to show their abilities on the court. The tour was an outstanding success and we look forward to building the relationships we have with Moeller and Chaminade in 2018. A special mention to Mr Matthew Hamilton-Smith, who coached the Varsity team and continues to show a tremendous commitment to the development of these young men. Thank you to Mr Henry Mahoney, who is a young developing coach and his enthusiasm to learn the game is infectious and we look forward to his journey at Terrace. Thank you also to Mr Adam Read and Mr Stewart Webb, who were a fantastic support on the trip and played a significant part in keeping the boys motivated and whenever something was needed both could accommodate whatever the request.

Family ties In 1980, the Terrace Family mourned the passing of Craig Andrews (GT 1979). Although 27 years have passed, Craig has not been forgotten at Terrace and the family ties that bind are still strong. Craig attended Terrace from Year 8 in 1975 through to his Senior year in 1979. Craig was heavily involved in his school life at Terrace despite painful medical treatment he was receiving for the cancer he was fighting. In 1979 Craig graduated with an equivalent Tertiary Entrance score to an OP1. Sadly, his three-year battle with cancer ended in 1980. Br Buckley was Headmaster of the College at the time and grew close to Craig’s family as they fought the battle together. Br Buckley had a statue of St Joseph erected in the College grounds in Craig’s memory to recognise the qualities he showed

as a person. These qualities are reflected in the statue; dignity, strength, simplicity and composure. Br Buckley wrote in his Headmaster’s Report: All of us who were privileged to know Craig and to work with him closely, will ever remember the courage and resignation he exhibited and the example of Christian living he gave. Terrace occupied a warm and large place in his heart. Br Buckley remains close family friends with Craig’s parents, Ron and Diane Andrews. Ron and Diane are grandparents to Nicholas Felsch (Year 12 Buckley) and recently attended the Induction Mass at the University of Queensland, along with Br Buckley and were thrilled when they were able to take this photo of Nicholas with Br Buckley. A strengthening of the ties that make the Terrace Family.

Ron and Diane give two prizes every year at the Celebration of Excellence in Craig’s name. The Craig Andrews Memorial Trophy for Senior Debating and the Craig Andrews Memorial prize for First in Biology.

Terrace Flashback

The flashback for April comes from Old Boy Edward Hoeppner (GT 1970) who lives in San Antonio in the United States. Ed sent these photos into the College Archives along with a few memories of his days at Terrace.

– that is I wore American football pads. I was a sight with those pads on, though I didn’t know we weren’t supposed to wear them until after the game when I was removing them (must have helped that I was about 6 ft 5 inches tall at the time!).

Ed, also known as Tex (due to his place of birth), participated in several sports at Terrace including rugby, football, cricket and rowing. He emailed the Archives and shared two of his sporting memories that have not faded nearly 50 years later.

In cricket, they asked me to be a bowler. The only reason I can think that they wanted me to bowl is that they thought that the sight of a huge guy bowling an erratic ball at the batter might intimidate the opposition. Somebody told me that I bowled a “Googly” and I still don’t know what that means.

I had never played rugby before playing at Terrace. The first time I showed up for a game I dressed as if I was playing American football

Ed was also remembers his time in the College Cadet Corps, I also participated in the Army

Cadets at Terrace. I can remember that they used to take us out to a firing range and give us a big rifle. That rifle had a big kickback when fired – ouch! In 1970 Ed left Terrace to return to the USA. He found his education at Terrace to be of such a high standard that he didn’t learn anything new until his second year at university. Ed had a long career in engineering, living in four countries before his semiretirement. He now practices fire and safety engineering for an international consulting company and lives with his wife in Texas. Ed is hoping to visit Brisbane and Terrace later this year.

Vale The Terrace Family mourns the passing of two Terrace greats. Wallaby, Tom Sweeney, and Vietnam veteran, Errol Eadie. These men leave their legacy to the future Terrace Gentlemen, having lived lives of faith, humility and wisdom.

Errol Andrew Eadie (GT 1955) Errol passed away on 5 January after a long illness, aged 78. He was a student at Terrace from 1954-55. Errol was interested in a military career even whilst at school and was a member of the College Cadet Corps. Errol’s class mate and fellow Vietnam and Malaya veteran, Terry Dinneen (GT 1954-55) recalls the Monday afternoons he and Errol spent with the cadets. We learnt to drill and how to fire a rifle. The rifle was a .303 the same rifle that had been in use with the Army in WWI and WWII. There was a .22-inch rifle range in the school yard so we were able to fire the small-bore version of the weapon before we went to Annual Camp. Annual Camp was two weeks in tents at Greenbank and we fired full bore ammunition from the rifle and the Bren gun while there.

After Errol left Terrace he went to work with the Births, Deaths and Marriages department. He enlisted in the Army and in 1957 Errol fought in Malaya with the 3rd Battalion Royal Australian Regiment (3RAR) for two years. Errol went back to Malaya for a second tour before returning to Australia and Woodside in South Australia. In mid 1965 Australia committed an Infantry battalion to Vietnam. More battalions needed to be raised and Errol was sent to Puckapunyal to raise 7RAR. Errol remained with this battalion for both of his tours of Vietnam in 1967-68 and 1970-71. Errol put the military behind him upon discharge and had no contact with former comrades. He worked as a transport manager and in security work before settling in to long term employment in the health industry providing safety procedures to hospitals and care facilities.

Tom Sweeney (GT 1946) Tom passed away in Melbourne on 17 February, aged 87. Tom was a student at Terrace from 1944 to 1946. His father, also Tom Sweeney, attended Terrace in 1913 and was a founding member of the Gregory Terrace Old Boys' Association. Tom was a member of the Senior University B class, a Cadet Corps Officer, fullback in the 1st XV, Captain of the 1st XI Cricket team and a member of the All Schools Athletics team for high jump and Captain of the 2nd IV Tennis team. After leaving school, Tom joined the Brothers Club in Brisbane and played rugby as a Queensland fullback and Wallaby. His father, Tom was a rugby league fullback who represented the

Kangaroos on the 1919 tour of New Zealand. In 1953 Tom was a member of the Wallaby tour of South Africa. He was unfortunately forced to retire after an anterior cruciate ligament rupture in his left knee, he was only 24. Tom continued to coach from 1956 to 1959 at Brothers and was named a life member of the club. Rugby was not the only sport Tom excelled at. He also held the Queensland High Jump title from 1947-52 and competed in the 1952 Olympic trials. Later in life Tom became a professional engineer for the Snowy Mountains Authority and a Chief Engineer for the Gate Bridge Authority.

Thank you for making Terrace the 'best it can be’, and who knows I may even have a son or a grandson at Terrace one day too. There is a saying that says - "I’m benefitting from the shade of trees planted by others, now it’s time for me to plant some trees" – thank you for planting trees for generations of Terracians just like me. Todd McElwaine (Year 6)

$10m+ Join the Journey Campaign – Thank You! The Gregory Terrace Foundation Donors’ Thank You Cocktail Party was held on 29 March as part of the new approach to nurturing our culture of philanthropy. All 2016 and 2017 donors were invited to a simple yet stylish gathering in College Hall to enjoy an archival display and entertainment by the Waterford String Quartet and Terrace Jazz Combo. The event’s theme was ‘Thanksgiving, Celebration, Anticipation’ and proceedings began with a heartwarming film clip produced by Dominic Feltoe (Year 12). In his address College Principal, Dr Michael Carroll thanked all donors and Board members; both current and since the Gregory Terrace Foundation was established 30 years ago, for their support. As we look to the GT2020 Master Plan if it wasn’t for those who have gone before us, we would not be in the tremendous position we are today. In good humour the opportunity was taken to highlight how ongoing support is essential for building projects and the College Bursary program. In his speech, the Chair of the Foundation, Mr Simon Keyser provided details of the enormous

generosity of the Terrace Family over the last 30 years. Achievements included 30 bursaries ( 11 graduates and 19 current students), 27 building projects either assisted or entirely funded, and gifts equating to over $19m raised for the College. Todd McElwaine (Year 6) addressed guests, “On behalf of all current boys, all the way up to the Class of 2024 who are currently in Year 5 – Thank You. Thanks to generous donors like you all, many buildings have been built, many bursary boys are now able to be at Terrace and the boys starting in Year 5 next year will join an even better Terrace. They will be the Year 12 class of 2025 – our Sesquicentenary year (that means 150th birthday)!” Looking ahead, it is an exciting time for Terrace. The ambitious $10m+ Join the Journey campaign that incorporates both options of buildings and bursaries, was launched at the beginning of the year. All founding gifts are for 2017 onwards and range between $100-$374 000 with the $374 000 gift being a ‘Challenge Gift’ from the donor family (who have requested to remain anonomous), matching all new gifts and pledges up to that amount.

The campaign has already reached $7 001 074 from 806 donors. The evening concluded with a toast proposed to Gregory Terrace and its Foundation by Br Ted Walker, who continues as the longest serving Foundation Board Director. Terrace has much to be thankful for, much to celebrate and much to anticipate - thank you for joining the journey in building Terrace’s future together. Terrace Foundation Annual Report of Donors 2016 On behalf of all Foundation Board Directors, I wish to thank each of our 933 donors listed in this annual report for providing a gift to Gregory Terrace through the Building and/ or Bursary Fund. With sincere thanks to the generosity of the Terrace Family, 2016 was another successful year, raising $1 656 154 for our College. All gifts, large or small, either as a rolling pledge or an annual gift, support generations of Terracians – thank you. Your valued support benefits each Terrace Gentleman, with facilities and resources that help promote academic excellence across our three campuses.

The following grants were made in 2016: $600 000 (Waterford Place) $200 000 (Treacy Centre) $100 000 (Tennyson) $275 500 (College Bursary program). Donations to the Edmund Rice Bursary Fund fully supported the 19 young men awarded bursaries under the College Bursary program. This program continues to provide boys and their families with the opportunity to receive a Terrace education where otherwise they would not have had one. In October, Mrs Lea Walker-Franks was appointed as the College Director of Development.

Strategic planning then began on the $10m+ Join the Journey campaign to secure pledges towards making Stage 1 of the GT2020 Master Plan a reality. Pledges are important as they provide the College with the confidence to proceed with planning. Once again, I thank all donors for ‘joining the journey’ and helping us build Terrace’s future together. Mr Simon Keyser Chair Gregory Terrace Foundation
