Working closely with the City and County of Denver, Santa Fe Business Improvement District, Art District on Santa Fe and the La-Alma Lincoln Park Neighborhood Association we are re-imagining Santa Fe Drive as a 21st century street with improvements encompassing the community’s values and priorities.

Santa Fe Arts District (Quick-Build)
Working closely with the City and County of Denver, Santa Fe Business Improvement District, Art District on Santa Fe and the La-Alma Lincoln Park Neighborhood Association we re-imagined Santa Fe Drive as a 21st century street with improvements encompassing the community’s values and priorities. Installed in 2020, the interim streetscape provides an additional 40,000 square feet of pedestrian space. Small and large social spaces, benches, seating pods and parklets along the corridor encourage people to stop and socialize. Additional elements include planters, bike racks, asphalt art, and improved lighting. To engage and empower the community and better understand the specific corridor needs before permanent installation, a rapid placemaking demonstration effort took place in August 2019.

As Project Manager, I led a team in development of a diverse collection of experiences for people of all ages to enjoy in the new 4-Mile Entertainment District. Six pedestrian focused spaces will connect the site internally and to the nearby Cherry Creek Greenway through low water and low maintenance plantings, streetside stormwater planters, a raised speed table, and raised pedestrian crossings. Spaces include the Central Lawn with an outdoor stage and play boulders; Seasonal Play Plaza with a splash pad water feature, pop up market vendors, an iconic shade structure and ice cream stand; Beer Garden nestled within a tree grove; Art Plaza with an iconic light forest art features; and the Creek Promenade with a variety of seating for visitors to engage the wide green space.

Neighbors, visitors, businesses, and property owners were engaged to create a community-led vision for reclaiming an unfinished and underused linear space between the LoHi neighborhood and Downtown Denver. 28,000 SF of streetscape improvements serving as a gateway to Downtown Denver will include a dog run, native plantings, native seed mix, and seating nooks.
The narrow unused urban space, +/- 25’ at its widest point and located adjacent to I-25, led to a design with careful consideration to uncompromise substructure MSE retaining wall support infrastructure (moment slabs, ground nails, soil reinforcement, shoring walls) and heavy utility conflicts.

Landscape and urban design services for Block 2 of the Sun Valley Redevelopment; a new mixed-use, mixed-income, multi-generational community in the heart of Denver’s Dun Valley neighborhood. Work included fostering urban life via social gathering spaces, a healthy tree canopy, low maintenance and low water plantings, water quality facilities, and urban furnishings to achieve the streetscape vision identified in the Sun Valley Design Guidelines and Standards while meeting City standards and regulations within the Public ROW.

As part of our branding and marketing development for the City and County of Denver’s Division of Green Infrastructure, I led the development of informational fliers, a project showcase video, and life-size to-scale prints of green infrastructure planters to use as public engagement tools with Denver’s communities. Showcasing the importance and critical role that green infrastructure plays in our city including a reduction of stormwater runoff, treating and storing water, habitat diversity, and mitigating the urban heat island will help educate residents with the goal of improving watersheds and creating healthy environments. This strategy can help result in an equitable and climate resilient city and position Denver as a leader in green infrastructure implementation.

Indigenous Inspirations, a physical land acknowledgment, is a proposition for embedding indigenous design and storytelling into the fabric of Arvada’s parks. The goals of the project are to encourage learning and sharing of Arvada indigenous communities in the park’s daily rituals, creating a welcoming gathering space for individual reflection and large group events, and moving beyond traditional land acknowledgments.
Spiritual beliefs and values, ceremonies and rituals, and plants and medicine traditionally used by the Tsétsėhéstaestse (Cheyenne) the Hinono’eiteen (Arapaho) Nuche (Ute)Oceti Sakowin (Lakota) nations have been integrated into the design of the site from layout to details. Circling

Furniture Design
Drawing inspiration from the historic street 60 degree street grid of Denver’s Auraria neighborhood, I designed a modular piece for furniture made of hardwood maple that can be used as an end table or leaning stool. Initial design ideas were sketched and then modeled in Rhino to fine tune and prep the furniture for traditional wood working. A focus on ergonometrics, properties of materials, principles and techniques of joinery and techniques of hand and machine tools were developed.

Scope of Work Master Planning Framework
Working with the City of Barcelona’s Ecology, Urban Planning and Mobility department, a master planning framework was developed for the Can Ricart industrial heritage site as part of an international urban design studio. The heart of the plan is to re-imagine the public realm by putting people first and developing a master plan with a network of public spaces as the framework. Multiple plans, including the Cerdà grid and 22@ innovation district, have been imposed on the neighborhood with minimal community voice. Consequently, the fabric of the Sant Martí district has been fragmented, both physically and socially. The vision is to create a new focal point for the district which honors the history of the space, re-connects neighborhoods, creates places for the people of those neighborhoods and provides opportunities for community-building.

As part of a master in urban design studio, two concept plans were designed highlighting the potential for a site identified by the Aurora Urban Renewal Authority as a key gateway into the City. Concept A provides moderate density while Concept B includes larger apartment buildings with more than double the amount of residential units. Both options include a planned drive through on Parcel F and a gas station with retail space on Parcel E. Westerly Creek Culvert near Akron St. on the north side of the site will remain in the short-term. It is recommended that Akron St. connect south to the site when funding is available.
