SGBIS Art, Design & Technology Investigation, Extension & Challenge Unit Year 7 Design & Technology: Jellyfish Inspired Bird Scarers and Soundmakers

SGBIS Year 7 DT : Jellyfish Soundmakers

Based on the theme of “Jellyfish” the outcomes of this project will be;    

    

drawings of Jellyfish using chalks detailed line drawings of jellyfish a variety of sketched ideas for bird scarers or wind sound-makers based on your drawings and from the research you have done.

Experiments with shaping and altering materials to create 3D models of Jellyfish. Samples of materials should be stuck into your book with notes to explain how you are going to use them. You can experiment with recycled papers, plastics etc.

Individual paper/plastic sculptures of Jellyfish Photographs of any models that you make 2 A4 research pages showing items made from recycled materials A larger model made in small teams – these will go together to make a group display A self-assessment sheet

Do your best with this because we want to create a gallery of all your work.

Use this inspirational research board http://pinterest.com/mirandawrycroft/bird-scarers-and-wind-soundmakers/ and the drawings you have done to give you ideas to help you to produce and present a range of jellyfish inspired ideas that you could try to make out of recycled items. You will need to sketch your ideas in your design book adding samples of recycled materials and notes to help to explain your ideas. Choose transparent (see through) or semi-opaque ( not quite see through ) materials where you can to resemble the real jellyfish. You may also want to add glow in the dark materials (phosphorescent), why not experiment with glow sticks if you have some!

For homework you will be asked to create your own paper or plastic sculpture of a Jellyfish – these will be hung together as a huge display of floating forms. Everyone in year 7 will be making one!

You will then work in small groups combining your ideas to plan and create one big jellyfish wind sounder or bird-scarer.

Planning, teamwork and careful use of materials will be essential to success! You will need to collect materials from home, around school or anywhere you can get them from to help you to build your model.

You will also research and select images of other items made out of recycled materials and create 2 A4 pages of your favourite ideas.

Extension and challenge tasks: 

Create a documentary film explaining your project to others – this could be added to the wiki site to help other people doing the same project. 



Create a design for a T-shirt based on the line drawings you have done. You could then draw this on to a T-shirt using fabric pens. When you have finished the design, iron the T-shirt to fix the ink (make the design permanent so it doesn’t wash out)

Try and make another item out of recycled materials. Use the research you have done as homework to give you ideas.
