Ending to a New Beginning

So many things will forever be in our memories from this year, such as the passing of a beloved Queen, surging inflation, Russia invading Ukraine, and the rise and fall of bitcoin. In Pensacola we endured record-breaking heatwaves and bitter, freezing temperatures. Will we look back and say 2022 was a year for the record books? I don’t know, but we are slowly rolling through an ending to a new beginning with excitement and curiosity for what the future will bring. I, for one, am ready for 2023! I look forward to traveling to new places and making new friends while trying different foods and tasting divine wines. My calendar is filling faster than ever with events, fundraisers, and networking luncheons. As we roll into the first quarter, you plan the events and VIP Pensacola will be on-site, covering as many gatherings as possible.

In this issue, you will read about weddings in Pensacola, on lakes, golf courses, and under the stars. The pages are filled with beautiful gowns, elegant settings, and unique venues. Weddings are sometimes somber and quiet, while others are hip and fun. Either way, there is always a good story brewing when people are planning to say I do. If you live in a small community, friendship pools intertwine and it seems you know everyone. Invitations are often verbal, and you are welcome to all family celebrations, including weddings. I walked down many an aisle as the bridesmaid, and on most occasions, I walked with the same guy as he was my height. I attended his wedding, and he was an usher when I married his cousin. Years later, my niece called for me to return home and stand up with her on the day of her nuptials. Crossing the parking lot to the church, I raised my eyes, and there he stands, holding the door for me. We laughed as he said, “Here we go again.” As you read through the pages, I hope fun wedding memories come rushing back and you end up laughing your way to the end of the magazine.

In 2023, I wish you peace, happiness, and prosperity.

Christmas at the Clinic

The Pensacola Country Club hosted the Christmas at the Clinic event on November 29. Over 150 attendees came out to support this great community event. Christmas Trees decorated with amazing ornaments, and forty-plus fresh wreaths filled the rooms, along with gifts placed around the ballroom that were available for the silent auction. The virtual silent auction was available and started a week in advance just for this event. All the items displayed were taken home at the end of the evening after they were purchased. The Pensacola Country Club staff and chef certainly pulled

out all the stops for a beautiful dinner, serving chicken and waffles, ham and cheese biscuits, roast beef sliders, fried green tomatoes, gouda and grits, and Southern macaroni and cheese.

This sold-out event put everyone in the Christmas spirit while supporting the Health and Hope Clinic, which was founded in 2003 by the Pensacola Bay Baptist Association to meet the needs of the medically underserved and uninsured in Escambia County. Since it was founded, the clinic has provided over 15 million dollars in healthcare services with over 18,000 patient/provider visits.

QUARTERS A

Holiday Party

The Quarters A Holiday Party had Rear Admiral Pete Garvin and his wife Cheryl opening their hearts and festive home to more than 125 people on December 8. As the Senior Naval Officer at NAS Pensacola, Rear Admiral Garvin serves as Commander, Naval Education, and Training Command. Quarters A’s grand foyer boasts a beautiful staircase and is open to a dining room, several sitting rooms, and the butler’s pantry and kitchen. On one side of the foyer, the Christmas tree and decorations were twinkling in the living room, and on the other side, the dining room table was set with a large selection of food for the guests, such as grilled bourbon-glazed chicken and veggie skewers, assorted cheeses and meats, spinach salad with creamy balsamic vinaigrette, and topped off with chocolate peppermint bark and pumpkin pie cheesecake cups for everyone to enjoy. As the guests came inside from the porch, Rear Admiral Garvin and his wife invited all guests to sign his book of cruises to commemorate everyone’s visit to this historical home. Rear Admiral Garvin’s message to his guests was, “For all a happy and safe holiday season!”

e R e t R ots… On My Lawn!!?

No, I am not selling tickets to the latest sci- movie, and robots are not going to take over anything. I do, however, know that robotic mower technology is going to change lawncare. With the robotic mower market growing at ~11% annually, you will start seeing them as commonplace in the years ahead. Until now, the United States has been somewhat slow to adopt the idea. The driving force in Europe has been the high cost of labor. Since the pandemic the United States has experienced higher wage pressure and scarcity of labor. With labor scarce and wages on the rise, residential and commercial properties are more open to exploring the possibilities.

We have come to expect a fast, loud, zero turn radius lawn mower whizzing by us at breakneck speed and if we are close by, the wise person will look away to avoid ying debris. Now consider the battery powered autonomous mower. The unit is installed on a speci c lawn complete with a boundary wire (like an invisible dog fence) and charging station. The almost completely quiet autonomous robotic mower will go out as programmed

and mow until it needs charging (~1.5 hours) and then will make its way back to the charging station, plug itself in for a recharge and head back out to continue mowing the lawn. The extremely lightweight blades (about the size of a traditional razor blade) that are mounted on a disk underneath the machine are also on a swivel so if they impact something of substance they simply fold back for safety. Many units also have sensors that cause them to turn away from any large object that they may encounter. They work autonomously (even at night) but you can have an app on your phone, and they work with Alexa and other popular platforms, making it simple to send the mower to make changes as needed. These features make the autonomous robotic mower very conducive to maintaining residential lawn spaces. Since the mowers work constantly, it will always appear to have just been mowed. You may have seen the small robotic mowers in the big box retailers and even on a commercial. More recently, since the US was slow to adapt, the manufacturers have put resources into the larger markets like Atlanta and Dallas to achieve the greatest return on investment.

In 1830 the rst lawn mower was invented and patented by Edwin Budding outside of Gloucestershire, England. Improvements started almost immediately and in 1870, Jacobsen introduced a gas-powered mower that would cut up to 4 acres per day. Fast forward again to 2005 when robotic lawn mowers accounted for the second largest category for domestic robots. Now looking forward into 2023 practically all the major players in the green industry equipment sector have major investments into the di erent ideas of what the future will look like and all are exploring the use of robotic technology.

There are di ering ideas of employing autonomous technology and not all of them use a rechargeable-battery operated robot. Some rms have mastered the idea of installing sophisticated guidance systems on traditional gas/diesel powered large mowing equipment that still has a seat for the operator. The idea is that the operator would mow the area the rst time with the mower imprinting the exact process. Once that information is on-board the machine, the technology would then allow it to self-perform the mowing going forward. One other use of the technology with a twist is for the operator to mow the perimeter of an area and get o the machine leaving it to ll in and mow the entire area. The operator is free to manage the other aspects of landscape care while the rider-less machine does its job. I see this technology, especially with commercial lawn care operators, golf courses, sports turf, and municipalities playing a major role in the future.

Will the traditional lawn mower go the way of the horse and buggy? I do not believe it will. There are just too many situations in which a traditional lawn mower makes the most sense. As time moves forward and technology is considered in the design

of the outdoor space, the need for the human component will be somewhat diminished. There even may be a time in the future that kids will not realize that mowing the lawn was a thing!

How will the use of robotic technology impact the landscapes of the future? Future developments will take into consideration that with the right design, all lawn areas can be maintained with autonomous robots. Take this idea and employ the use of battery-powered blowers, trimmers, pole saws and hedgers. The result is a quieter, cleaner community that is very appealing. The battery-operated hand equipment is also lighter, and you don’t have to store fuel.

Currently in the US we have some obstacles to overcome. Our privacy fences, sidewalks, and other hardscape areas leaving small, hard to get to lawn spaces will have to be addressed. This is also a potential opportunity to re-assess the landscape design. I have already witnessed several of my robotic mower customers re-designing their landscapes to make it possible for the robotic mower to mow the entire lawn area. Consider the idea that with an autonomous robotic mower maintaining the lawn you/or your contractor can focus on the ner aspects of landscape care that o en get overlooked.

Robotic mowers start at ~$1200 for the smallest of units. That is a signi cant investment for many residents so simply leasing the equipment has been the direction of the market.

The only thing that is constant, it seems, is change. Personally, I would rather enjoy a morning playing tennis or a long bike ride than mowing my lawn. I bet more of you are looking to enhance your life as well.

ECSO Retiree & Employee Luncheon

Sheriff Chip Simmons and the Escambia County Sheriff Foundation held their annual ECSO Retiree/Employee Luncheon on December 6, at the back parking lot of the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office. The luncheon was held on the anniversary of the NAS Pensacola terrorist attack to honor our deputies’ bravery and our community’s response, who came together during this time. This event also recognized the many Sheriff’s Office retirees in the

area. This is a way to say thank you for the hard work displayed every day by the sworn and non-sworn employees of the Sheriff’s Office.

The ECSO Retiree/Employee Luncheon is one way the ECSO continues to enhance the family atmosphere of the department. Current and former ECSO deputies, employees, and spouses come together to share their stories and memories. Employees present were also given an official 2022 Christmas Ornament.

ProHealth is a Hidden Gem in Pensacola!

Citizens of the Emerald Coast! There is a hidden gem in our medical community that has been here for over 30 years and you may not even know it exists. I am talking about locally owned ProHealth Walk-In Medical Care and Labs. ProHealth has won multiple Best of the Bay awards during its time but last year ProHealth was named the 2021 Business of the YEAR by both the Gulf Breeze and Pensacola Chambers of Commerce. The Owners of ProHealth are always looking for ways to o er more to their community and that is why they are expanding their Medical Weight Loss programs, Hormone Therapy o erings, ED solutions, and in January ProHealth plans to open a gorgeous IV Hydration lounge in their Gulf Breeze location.

This plan is great for those that are self-employed, uninsured, have high deductible plans and especially for employers who want to o er a benefit to their employees to help them stay competitive in this tough labor market. At $45 per month that is only 28cents an hour for a fulltime employee. Medical Membership is a great example of ProHealth’s commitment to keeping medical care a ordable.

ProHealth doesn’t even require an appointment or a doctor’s referral. It doesn’t report medical findings to an electronic medical records database and in most cases ProHealth will be your most convenient cost-e ective option for Primary Medical Care. ProHealth has 2 Walk-in clinics and 7 convenient lab locations along the panhandle and is almost always the least expensive lab work option coupled with the convenience of not needing a doctor’s order or an appointment. Chronic disease management for Diabetes, Blood Pressure, Cholesterol, and Anxiety are a breeze with ProHealth. For the kiddos they make vaccinations, colds, allergies, rashes, physicals, and minor procedures (lacerations, bumps, bug bites…) quick and easy. ProHealth o ers more options than a clinic in a pharmacy lobby and

it won’t leave you with an unexpected gigantic medical bill that comes from visiting an Emergency Room. ProHealth also o ers a full array of Covid services whether you are traveling or suspect you may have contracted Covid, ProHealth can help. ProHealth even o ers DOT physicals and testing along with drug screening. Patients have found that even though ProHealth does not accept insurance they are often cheaper and more convenient than using a co-pay and scheduling with a preferred insurance provider. ProHealth providers take the time to listen and address your health and wellness goals. We are fortunate to have all these expedient cost-e ective medical services right here at our doorstep and most of us are unaware.

Our local beach hotels and restaurants know this jewel exists and will often tell their guests to go to ProHealth and skip the ER for minor emergencies or illnesses while they are visiting our little slice of paradise.

You may be unaware of this little treasure, but I encourage you to find this gem the next time you need lab work, have a medical need or you just want to get a B12 or Lipotonix shot to make your body a boost. They can be reached by phone at (850)-203-1910 or visit www.ProHealthFL.com.

Sarah James + Josh Almazan

October 1, 2022

Ceremony & Reception: Live Oak Plantation

California natives Sarah James and Josh Almazan met while they were both nursing students at Pensacola Christian College. While they’d known of each other for a while, they hadn’t spoken until their junior year, when their seats in class were right next to each other. While getting to know each other they realized they had grown up only a few hours from each other in California. Sarah asked Josh if he would like to ride to the hospital clinical with her friend group since his car was in the shop. He agreed and the pair spent a busy day at Baptist hospital together learning how to take care of patients. They sat across from each other in the hospital cafeteria and sparks flew. Sarah says Josh quickly became her best friend and confidant. She says they share a lot of the same family situations and favorite things. He is opposite of her perfectionist, overly stressed, high-strung personality. She quickly realized a er a few study dates that she needed him in her life to make her laugh and calm her down, while she believes Josh needs her to keep him on track.

The proposal took place on November 6, 2021, a er Josh took Sarah to brunch at George Bistro and told her that he asked his friend to take fall pictures of them at Holland Farms, knowing that fall is her favorite season. Halfway through the photo session, Josh got down on one knee in the middle of a zinnia field and gave Sarah a beautiful oval diamond on a simple gold band.

The Almazan’s ceremony and reception took place at Live Oak Plantation with 100 guests in attendance. They decided on the venue due to the oak trees, the calming outdoor lights, the rustic yet elegant oak hall, and the beautiful lawn. For the couple, the choice was easy as they’d both fallen in love with the location immediately upon seeing it. Sarah and Josh had a short, simple, outdoor ceremony with their pastor Mike Brown officiating and the couple pledging their own handwritten vows to each other. The bride wore an A-line dress in a subtle ivory with delicate beading and sparkle from designer Stella York, while the groom wore a classic black suit. The romantic and rustic theme of the wedding was shown in the wedding colors of cream, eucalyptus green, and with bridesmaids wearing cabernet-colored dresses.

Guests at the reception enjoyed food by Chef Nick and entertainment by DJ Drone. The newlywed’s first dance was a choreographed dance to Lifetime by Justin Bieber. The Alzamans le the reception in their car, tastefully decorated by the best man, and spent the night at a hotel on Pensacola Beach. Their favorite moment of the day was the first look, made even more special by their wedding party in the background, cheering them on.

A er a honeymoon to Kauai, Hawaii, the couple has settled down in Pensacola, where they are both nurses at Baptist Hospital.

Mia Jones + Ridge Chambers

October 16, 2022

Ceremony & Reception: Su osey Warehouse and Gardens

The love story of Mia Jones and Ridge Chambers was a few years in the making. Mia, from Pace, and Ridge, a native of Atlanta, met while working together a few years ago. Life took them in different directions until Covid happened in 2020. It wasn’t until then that the pair really got to know one another and quickly became inseparable. Mia says it took no time to realize Ridge was one in a million. He loved like no other man she’d ever seen. He had all the attributes she ever wanted in a partner. Within the first couple of months, she knew this was the man she wanted to spend her life with. Ridge proposed to Mia on their one-year anniversary. The couple had a boat day planned but it was a gloomy Sunday, so much that she suggested they cancel. Ridge was very adamant that they go out anyways. A er he scouted for the perfect place along the shore, they got off the boat and went for a walk. On the walk they stopped to take in the scenery, and it was then that Ridge proposed.

Mia and Ridge were married on October 16, 2022, with 80 guests in attendance at Supposey Warehouse and Gardens, on what they describe as the perfect October day. The couple says as soon as they walked into the garden at Supposey while looking at venues, they immediately knew that was where they wanted to get married. And it only got better while touring with owner, Chloe Sexton. They say her venue was unmatched in every way possible. Not to mention, Ridge was the typical groom who was going to be happy regardless, but even he was blown away with how beautiful Supposey was. Mia’s vision for her wedding was simple and classic with white flowers, as well as white decor. The wedding party wore classic black and white attire. The bride’s dress was very classic and elegant, but with a twist, as she wore a cape, instead of a veil. She had a locket with a photo of her late father in it that was attached to her bouquet for something old. Her grandmother gi ed her sapphire earrings for something new and blue, and she also wore a pair of diamond earrings from her mother-in-law as something borrowed. The groom wore a white coat with black accents and black slacks and shoes. The officiant for the wedding was Ridge’s best friend who had everyone laughing and crying with his words and descriptions of the couple’s personalities.

A er the wedding, guests were entertained at the reception by DJ Charlie Roberts and enjoyed food by Olive to Nosh. The couple’s first dance was to Dressed Up In White by CAL. The couple le the reception through a sea of bubbles, thanks to a bubble machine. The Chambers reside in Navarre, Florida, where Mia is a stay-at-home mom and Ridge is a new car manager at Sandy Sansing Chrysler Dodge.

i Hays + G don Frank

November 19, 2022

Ceremony & Reception: Pensacola Yacht Club

Alli Hayes and Gordon Frank’s life together began at Vinyl Music Hall in Pensacola. Alli’s parents were big fans of the local band, Post Pluto, and went to nearly all their shows. Alli’s mother thought she should meet the guitar player for the band, so a er a show at Vinyl, the pair met and immediately hit it off. Alli says she knew it was something genuine by their third week of dating. She says she couldn’t quite tell what it was, but spending time together felt comfortable. The couple got engaged in Utah at Zion National Park. A er hiking to the top of Observation Point, Gordon proposed. Alli said it was magical because the crowds quickly cleared out, leaving them with just one another. Gordon asked if someone would take a picture of them near the canyon’s edge, he got down on one knee and photographer immediately switched it to video to capture the entire moment.

The couple’s wedding and reception were held at the Pensacola Yacht Club on November 19, 2022, with around 200 guests in attendance. Alli wore an ivory A-line ballgown by Louvienne she purchased at Lovely Bride in Charleston, South Carolina. The groom wore a classic black tux with a paisley vest and an ivory tie from Gent’s Formal Wear. The bride’s something old was her great grandmother’s necklace, her something new was her earrings from Anthropologie, she borrowed Gordon’s great grandmother’s handkerchief, and painted a blue F on her nail for Gordon’s last name. The wedding colors were dark red, emerald green, golden yellow, terracotta orange, and sage green. Alli noted that the ceremony was perfect, all thanks to Scott Segers, the Yacht Club’s Event Manager. The couple planned for the ceremony to be outside on the lawn, but the rain had other ideas. Scott quickly moved the ceremony under the tent to the reception location. Scott’s calmness during that stressful moment helped Gordon and Alli relax and have fun while getting ready with their bridal parties without them even realizing a change had to be made. Alli says the excitement was too strong for them to care about the change, a er all, she loves the rain. With the ceremony now taking place under the tent with all 200 guests, twinkling lights and the rain hitting the top of the tent made the couple’s ceremony extremely cozy, romantic, and better than they could have ever imagined.

Following the theme of the wedding, a fall party with a funky disco flair, guests of the Frank wedding danced the night away to the band Flow Tribe and Gordon and his friends even got up on stage and played a few songs with the band. The newlyweds had the first dance to That’s What Angels Can Do by the Wood Brothers before leaving the venue in Gordon’s family’s vintage yellow corvette. A er their honeymoon at Couples Wind Swept Resort in Jamaica, the Franks and their cat settled into their newly built home in Pensacola.

When Nina Savage, owner of Top it Off Cupcakes, attended work events when she was in the medical field, she was always surprised when it came time for dessert. There were only a couple of options, take it or leave it. One single flavor of cake or other dessert was chosen for everyone in attendance. This led to not only a lot of waste but a lot of unsatisfied sweet tooths. A er 14 years working in the same field, she was inspired to make a change and start Top it Off Cupcakes. Starting her business in November of 2019, Nina’s business plan was to market to places where she knows the business, medical practices, pharmaceutical reps, and the like. She was not interested in catering weddings as this was not in her wheelhouse, however, with some encouragement by her father, Nina signed up to be a vendor at a bridal expo in January 2020. She was overjoyed and excited with the response. People were abuzz about the new idea that was so different from a traditional wedding cake, and her bookings were quickly filling up. Just when things were picking up for this brand-new business, COVID stopped many events in their tracks. During the pandemic, to stay relevant and keep Top it Off ’s name out there, Nina switched her strategy and started making pre-made cupcakes. In the meantime, Nina handled each event that remained booked with gusto, and since events came back in full force, Top it Off has thrived. She has been busier than ever and has exciting ideas for the business going into the new year.

Caiti Handrahan + Amber Lawler

February 26, 2022

Ceremony & Reception: T Burch House

The love story of Caitlin Handrahan, a native of Pensacola, and Amber Lawler, from Auburn, Alabama, began at Gallery Night in Downtown Pensacola, a er they matched on Tinder. While there was no one moment, they knew the other was the one. The brides say there were many moments that made it clear there was no one either of them would rather spend their lives with. They say the deeper they got to know each other’s layers and experience life together, it became clear this was exactly where they were meant to be.

The marriage proposal came as a big shock for Caiti as Amber surprised her on the property they had just purchased. She had no idea Amber was popping the question. Caiti had been at a hair appointment most of the morning and Amber wanted her to come to see their land, while Caiti objected, Amber was relentless. Finally, Caiti agreed to meet her there and when she pulled in, she saw her family all standing there, along with an elaborate setup. It didn’t hit her until Amber got on one knee. Caiti says she doesn’t even know if Amber even finished the question before she said yes!

The Handrahan’s dream wedding took place on February 26, 2022, at the Burch House with 100 guests in attendance. The couple says they were drawn to the location because of the pines and the dreamy vibe they were looking for. The wedding was just what the couple planned - warm, romantic, and moody boho. Amber’s dress was an A-line with a halter top that captivated her personality with

its traditional style and Caiti’s dress was a lace and form-fitting gown with a dramatic neckline. The bridesmaids wore black dresses and the décor had warm colors including terracotta, brown, and black. The couple chose green foliage and ivory flowers to complement the colors. Prior to the wedding day, their officiant had the women complete questionnaires detailing different aspects of the relationship and story. They were able to hear each other’s version during the ceremony - and right before the couple’s first kiss, a flock of geese flew over. They say it felt like a fairy tale. The officiant told them later that he could tell they were the real deal, and the love was infectious. Caiti and Amber said that statement alone meant the world to them. While there were so many special moments during their big day the couple says it’s impossible to pinpoint one, but they say they can both agree that the moment they walked down the aisle was a dream, but the speeches and celebration a erward had their hearts overflowing with love. Every moment of the day was perfect, and they would happily live it over and over again.

The reception was also held at the Burch House where the couple had their firs dance to NEEDTOBREATHE by Banks while their guests enjoyed food by The Cutting Board, drinks by Tap the Coast, and entertainment by Vista Event Productions. The newlyweds le the ceremony with sparklers and a fireworks show. Since honeymooning in Italy, the Handrahans reside in Pensacola.

Bridge e Jenson + Trey Myers

November 5, 2022

Ceremony & Reception:

Scenic Hi s Country Club

Brigette Jenson, a native of San Diego, and Trey Myers, from Pensacola, met while working on legal cases together. Their different styles and personalities balanced each other out and they quickly realized they were a great team. Bridgette says she knew he was the one for her when he gave her gummy bears and an FSU cup for Valentine’s Day, instead of the typical flowers or standard chocolates. Trey’s proposal took place a er Bridgette came home from a tough day at work, only to find a note on the kitchen counter that said to meet him outside by the pool. Outside, Trey had a fantastic bottle of red wine, the couple’s favorite music playing, and their two German Shepherds by his side. He presented her with a gorgeous engagement ring that completely caught her by surprise when he got down on his knee.

Bridgette and Trey’s wedding ceremony and reception took place at Scenic Hills Country Club on November 5, 2022, with 125 guests in attendance. The couple chose this date because it was close to Trey’s late mother’s birthday. Scenic Hills Country Club was the natural choice for the couple’s venue as they had become members a few years ago and the club and the people are very special to them. This, as well as the outdoor pavilion overlooking the 18th green, and newly remodeled ballroom, the couple felt the entire location could not have been more perfect. The bride’s vision for the wedding was simple yet elegant with colors of juniper green and dusty sage being used throughout the venue. Bridgette’s dress for the ceremony was a simple and elegant mermaid dress while the reception dress was fun and festive, to celebrate their special day. The groom wore a black tuxedo with a white vest and black bowtie. The guests for the big day included family and a large group of friends who the couple considers family. They were married by the Honorable Nickolas P. Geeker, who is very special to them because they have both practiced in front of him. The wedding party consisted of the friends and family who have supported them and encouraged their commitment to one another. There were also 6 children, belonging to members of the wedding party, that participated in the ceremony, and who each have a distinct place in the couple’s hearts.

The newlywed’s reception, held in the ballroom at Scenic Hills, had guests entertained by DJ Roger Martinez and enjoying food by the Scenic Hills chefs. The couple’s first dance was to I Prayed for You by Matt Stell, before leaving the reception in a white Jeep Grand Wagoneer. Bridgette says her favorite part of the day was walking down the aisle and looking at the most amazing human being, who was about to become her husband. A er spending their honeymoon in Antigua, the couple resides in Pensacola, where they are both lawyers.

Bread & Table Club

Hawa an Luau

One didn’t have to travel very far or wide to feel like you were in Hawaii at the Portofino Resort in Pensacola Beach on December 9, where the Bread and Table Club held a Christmas themed Luau, complete with Santa Claus making an appearance. There were over 45 members and guests that were greeted with Hawaiian leis and freshly made Hawaiian rum runner drinks. Hors d’oeuvres, such as grilled Asian chicken on a stick and lightly breaded Mahi-mahi were introduced by the wait staff, a tasty treat while members talked and mingled around the pool. Dinner was served with a gorgeous buffet style and included Mahi-mahi dressed with sweet pineapple and tomato pieces, rice pilaf, pork sliders, squash, and a fresh spring mix salad. Contests ran throughout the evening with Missy Soja taking the prize for the hula-hoop while the limbo was a draw. Hula dancers came out to show and tell their story and real-life fire breather Kenneth Richardson, lit up the evening.

Wedding TRENDS

Weddings are one of the biggest days in a couple’s lives. Great thought, planning, and attention to every detail goes into the event while also considering the couple’s wants and needs and the enjoyment of their guests. It’s all enough to make you want to hop on the first plane to Vegas and go get hitched by Elvis at the chapel. But for those brave lovebirds who are willing to power through the stress, you’re rewarded with a special day filled with joy and love. To help with your planning, we have compiled the hottest wedding trends for 2023 to make sure your wedding is on fire!

Wedding DRESSES

The ring is on your hand, the date is set, and now it’s time to find the perfect wedding dress, the dress that’ll make you feel amazing and set the tone and style for the rest of your wedding. As with anything fashion related, trends come and go, and wedding dresses are not immune to this and their styles are ever evolving.

Wedding DRESSES

iNovel Necklines

Necklines are always on the radar when it comes to trends in fashion, and wedding dresses are no different. Asymmetrical necklines are all the rage this year in the wedding dress industry, and the more interesting the better. From cutouts to one shoulder necklines, bold and unique are on point this year. For a more elegant look, the mock neckline is also trending. Inspired by royals, this silhouette allows for a more conservative and regal look.

i

Sheer Happiness

The next trend is perfect for a wedding in our warmer months or those Gulf Coast beach weddings that are so beautiful. Sheer fabrics for wedding dresses are in. Now I’m not saying your dress should be see through, this is a family magazine a er all. However, sheer fabric at the bottom of your dress or sheer sleeves, especially embellished with crystals or a design, is sheer beauty and oh so fashionable this year.

iBlissful Ballgowns

With the return of large gatherings, we also have the return of large weddings. And while I’m sure there are some fathers of the bride out there that would prefer a small gathering, for the sake of their stress levels and of course, their wallet, but people are excited to be together again. With these large weddings come large venues, large guest lists, and of course, large ballgowns. That’s right, large, elaborate ballgowns are back and ready to shine. Think Disney princess meets over the top elegance, and you have this trend for 2023, a beautiful twist on tradition.

iMini Matrimony

For those brides who want a little less formal and a little more flirty and fun, this trend is for you. The mini party wedding dress is a newer trend and is probably here to stay. Whether you choose a mini for your ceremony or a dress change a er the ceremony, this dress will allow you to boogie the night away in style. While this style might evoke some pearl clutching from your more conservative guests, it is quite the fashion statement that will have people talking - long a er the last thank you note is sent.

i

Flower Girl

Flowers aren’t new to wedding dress trends, in fact, the two o en go hand in hand. What’s new this season is bold floral prints. Oversized embroidered floral patterns on wedding gowns have a so , romantic feel and can perfectly complement a whimsical wedding.

Wedding Bridesmaid DRESSES

iDown to Earth

Aer generations of stuffy, un-recyclable bridesmaid dresses, the trends have finally turned to fun, fashionable, and wearable dresses. This, along with the trend of choosing a dress that flatters individual body types, has bridesmaids everywhere rejoicing. For most bridesmaids, gone are the days of being forced to wear spaghetti straps in winter, one style fits all dresses, and wasting money on a dress to wear once. The 2023 trends for bridesmaid dresses are all about looking fabulous and being inclusive.

Earthy tones are more popular than ever when it comes to bridesmaid dresses. Roses, dusty blues, greens, and rust colors are all great choices as they are so , subtle, and flattering. These warm and inviting colors complement almost any complexion so they bring out the best in most skin tones. Many of these earthy tones are also versatile enough for weddings in any season.

Flattering Fashions

Bridesmaids come in all shapes and sizes so it’s difficult to find a dress that’s going to be flattering to all figures. So why should all your bridesmaids wear the same dress? A favorite new trend is to choose a color and have your crew pick out a dress they’re comfortable in to walk down the aisle. These different dresses not only add an interesting and eye-catching variation to your lineup, it can be the difference between timid and self-conscious and happy and confident attendants.

It’s a Wrap

If the bride has her heart set on matching dresses yet wants her bridesmaids of every body type to feel comfortable, a wrap dress is a great, trendy option. Wrap dresses have a magical way of being universally flattering to most body types while also being fashionable.

Beaming in Black

One of the biggest trends in 2023 is bridesmaids in black. And while endless jokes can be made about mourning and the like, there’s no denying a black dress is classic, elegant, and sophisticated. Whether it’s a chic city venue, a garden ceremony, or anywhere in between, a black dress is suitable most anywhere. You can change up fabrics, necklines, and lengths of the dress to fit the season, level of formality, and vibe of your ceremony.

i i
i

P lanning your big day isn’t easy, but it should be fun. Choosing the venue, the flowers, etc. can be overwhelming with all the choices but working together as a couple will ensure your day is perfect for you, even if it is perfectly imperfect.

Small, Yet Mighty

Small and intimate weddings are becoming more popular than ever these days. Whether it’s because our money doesn’t go as far as it used to, or maybe because COVID taught us that small is good, whatever the reason intimate ceremonies are trending and I’m here for it. A er all, it’s far more important to share your special day with close friends and family than that random co-worker that you only see when someone puts donuts in the breakroom.

iFirst Looks

While this trend isn’t new to this year, it’s here to stay. Private first looks, documented by the photographer are a special way to capture the moment the couple sees each other on their wedding day. While the moment usually happens as the bride starts walking down the aisle, couples are now taking time before the ceremony for first looks in a more intimate setting.

iPetite Bouquets

Small bouquets are trending in 2023, putting the focal point back on the wedding gown. Bold, eye-catching bouquets are beautiful but can sometimes overwhelm the look of the dress. Delicate flowers like lilies and lavender create a streamlined, sophisticated look while saving you a little money too.

iOne Stop Shop

With sites that specialize in weddings popping up everywhere these days, the trend of all-inclusive wedding venues soon followed. These are farms, old plantations, and the like that have been turned into wedding venues that offer everything you need for your special occasion. There’s lodging with bridal suites, a place for the ceremony, reception, and everything in between. These venues not only simplify your day, but your guests will also be grateful they don’t have to drive all over town.

i

Wedding CEREMONY & RECEPTION i i

In love and Online

Many couples are turning to the internet to streamline and even stream their day. Online wedding sites where guests can RSVP, note food choices and dietary restrictions help the couple keep track of their guest list. These sites can also stream your ceremony so those invitees that couldn’t make it to the ceremony or reception can enjoy the day with you virtually.

Candid Captures

Of course, you think of wedding pictures as perfectly posed moments, with just the right angles and light. Well, times are a changing and this new photography trend is one of my favorites - the photographer capturing candid wedding photos. The pictures of the flower girl giggling during the ceremony, the father of the bride looking on as his daughter says her vows, or family laughing as they’re chatting a er the ceremony. These moments are what makes the day special and they’re not to be missed. You can go one step further and add disposable cameras to the tables at the reception. These capture even more candid moments and depending on the level of maturity of your guests, can give some great, sometimes silly moments from the big day.

iSignature Cocktails

It’s no secret that I’m a huge fan of signature cocktails for special occasions, so I’m so happy that this trend has caught on for weddings. It’s simple and a wonderful way to personalize your reception. Name your favorite drinks a er your pets, your teams, or anything else that’s special to the couple.

i Jazzy Receptions

Another trend that’s emerging is unique reception entertainment. A DJ is always fun and knows what jams will get everyone on the dance floor, but what about dueling pianos as the main entertainment? Or maybe some karaoke, or a dance off ? Games are also fun reception options, bringing in arcade games, ax throwing, or beer pong. And if there are lots of kids at the reception, bringing in an entertainer for the kids is also a great idea to make it fun and occupy their attention - I’m sure their parents will thank you.

Business Profile

The resounding rst impression of a boutique wine shop within a mall presents itself as a fallacy. Wine connoisseurs would be quick to assume a shop with such a location would not house such an impressive collection, and the only boutique wines present would be commonly known names, which truly do not qualify as boutique.

However, owner Roger Johnson has accumulated a selection of over 1000 distinct wines from all over the world. From Burgundy to Bordeaux, to South Africa, to New Zealand, and from Slovenia, Croatia, and Cyprus to North and South America, there are bottles representing well over 300 different wine regions. This hidden gem has become a destination for wine lovers from all over the region as well as many visitors who nd it easily once they land at Pensacola International Airport.

With a collection as impressive as the one at BTG, the idea of a grand staff and an extensive inventory would have to exist. Remarkably, Johnson does it mostly on his own. Johnson prides himself on his collection and having something for everyone. Simply name a region or a brand, and he will know if he has it -- the vintage and the style, all off the top of his head. Unlike traditional wine shops and tasting rooms, he carries no menu.

Johnson believes that the presence of a menu does not allow the wine to ow naturally and prevents a true expansion of the palate from taking place. He also prides himself on the idea that “wine is for everyone” and does not have to be a black-tie event to try something truly amazing.

Johnson developed his incredible palate through travel. As a Finnish citizen, with family living all over Europe, he was rst introduced to wine and was able to visit many wineries as a teenager. In 1998 he then took a grand adventure through the South African wine country. The incredible series of experiences he had sealed his fate as a passionate preceptor for wines of the world that would end up being Beyond the Grape in 18 years.

The store in Pensacola was originally opened by a business partner based in New Orleans who has a shop at Riverwalk Mall specializing in fruit-based wines made in Florida and Louisiana. Johnson lived in New Orleans for 3 years where he got to know the Gulf Coast and when the Pensacola store became available, he jumped at the opportunity. He was up in Seattle, where he has lived most of his adult life and became immersed in the wine scenes in Washington and Oregon. Johnson was excited to become a wine merchant in Pensacola and to offer a wine tasting experience like he has found throughout his travels. While the store retains the best of the locally made fruitinfused wines and meads (Roger prides himself on the relationships he’s developed with the best winemakers in Florida), the store’s current inventory includes wines from all the best wine regions in the world, and some surprising up-and-coming wine regions.

After six years, BTG is easily the most sought-after wine shop in Pensacola, where a “Free Wine Tasting” sign from the original New Orleans location proudly glows brightly into the walkways of the mall. The frequent patrons of the establishment consistently come back not only for the wine, but also for the incredible conversation that Roger Johnson provides.

Due to its location just within the main mall entrance, BTG gets a large amount of foot traf c, for both the unique selection of wines, as well as for the wine smoothies which are an homage to the establishment’s roots. As one looks around waiting for the concoction of wine and slush, an inherent interest begins to take place. Since Roger also offers free sampling, individuals who may have never even thought about giving ne wine a try are brought

into an otherwise protected world by a stereotype of bourgeois events and pretentious sommeliers.

Johnson chooses to “meet customers where they’re at.” To him, it is a vitalization of community and a way to explore the world, all within the walls of the Cordova Mall. At BTG, the wine ows and, unlike many tasting rooms, Roger lets the customer, novice or experienced, explain what they are tasting. It is a no-judgment zone, and if someone does not like a particular wine, he simply shifts the palate and is successful in nding something that they would enjoy.

Beyond the Grape is also a host to many events. One can enjoy a glass of the nest wines and learn to paint from local artists by booking an Onto the Canvas paint and sip class with all equipment included. BTG also hosts events featuring regions and even speci c vineyards, as winery owners and winemakers from all over the world consistently visit Roger to present their wines in Florida. BTG has featured events focused on South Africa, Italy, Cyprus, Slovenia, and Croatia, and a few years ago held what some call the nest exhibition of Washington state wines ever presented in Florida.

Whether you’re a wine connoisseur or are just curious about wine, Roger Johnson at Beyond the Grape looks forward to meeting you and helping you nd the perfect wine to suit your taste.

Beyond the Grape is located in Cordova Mall, main entrance. 5100 N. Ninth Avenue, Suite E537, Pensacola 32504 850-696-2916, PensacolaFruitWinery.com.

The American Fundraising Foundation (AmFund) announced recipients of the 2022 Golden Pear Grants during a live stream on Facebook in a record breaking $250,000 distribution of funds and an additional $100K in-kind donations through its Educational Foundation.

The Junior League of Pensacola was among the organizations selected for an unrestricted grant in the amount of $2,500.

“We are pleased to present the Junior League of Pensacola with a Golden Pear Grant. The Golden Pear is part of our logo and symbolizes good health, prosperity, longevity and future happiness – all the things we hope for them and the many organizations that impact lives daily.”

Our great community stepped up and provided 481 gifts (30 microwaves, 22 heaters, 24 vacuums, 404 items of personal care, robes, slippers, pajamas, wall clocks, coffee makers, socks, blankets) and $5180 in gift cards for countless local seniors who may otherwise feel forgotten or unappreciated because they don’t have family or friends to share the holiday. What is your hometown and how did you end up in the Pensacola area?

My hometown is a little scattered being a military brat. We lived in Panama City Beach, Florida, Nuremberg, Germany, and in and around the Atlanta area. I consider Atlanta my hometown because I spent my teens and early twenties there. I moved to Pensacola in 2010 because I always loved it here when visiting my oldest brother. My parents also moved to Pensacola in 2004.

What is your profession?

I am the owner of Powell Entertainment. We specialize in entertainment, sound, and lighting for weddings, parties, and events. Entertainment in one form or another is all I have ever done. I have been a musician, a DJ, and an event coordinator my whole career. I also own the Rails on Wright Street event space and Glow Paddle.

What are some of your favorite things about Pensacola? What makes it unique?

Pensacola has it all. From a historical, adorable, and entertaining downtown, hole-in-the-wall restaurants with people wearing suits, and 5-star restaurants with people wearing sandals, a festival for everything, small town Southern hospitality with big city motivation. Not to mention the history!! Oh yeah, and just one of the most beautiful beaches on the planet! I have been to over 50 countries and a lot of US cities. Pensacola is truly my favorite place in the world. I wouldn’t live anywhere else if I had the choice…

Three words that best describe you. Motivated, Passionate, Positive.

Favorite place for going out?

I love walking downtown and experiencing all of the different bars and restaurants, especially when something new opens. My favorite is always supporting locally owned businesses.

What is one thing that you do not go a day without? Accomplishing something.

Finish this statement, I AM PENSACOLA because…

I am Pensacola because this is my home. One of my favorite things to do when we have visitors is to give them a full tour of this city and beach. Having established multiple businesses and great friendships, my wife and I plan to be forever Pensacolians.

I AM PENSACOLA
