hen I walked into my first o ce, fresh out of high school, brimming with ambition, and ready to take on the world, the environment was different than it is today. It was a time when fa machines hummed, landline phones rang incessantly, and the clatter of typewriters filled the air. The o ce environment has undergone a significant transformation over the years, and today s young professionals are thrust into a much faster-paced world.

ime has morphed into a spinning wheel as we impatiently wait for our computers to reboot and our emails to load. one are the days of physical paperwork and snail mail However, amidst all these changes, one crucial element remains constant The necessity for human connection and creativity. hile technology has undoubtedly revolutioni ed the way we conduct business, it is the human touch, the wit, and the intellect that continue to shape the success stories of tomorrow.

I advise young professionals to cultivate relationships with friends and businesspeople who can serve as mentors, offering invaluable advice based on their wealth of e perience. ou will never find the answers to how people honestly think, feel, and make decisions. hile it may appear in search engine results online, the calculated response you receive there cannot compare to the real-life e periences shared by successful business people.

As a young professional, you must search for knowledge only a good mentor can give you. Actively listen, learn, and emulate their actions. The reason behind this is simple nowledge is power, and mentors have achieved remarkable success and will share what they know. These business people have e celled in traditional business practices and continue to thrive in the ever-evolving modern landscape. The ability to adapt swi ly to rapid change is a remarkable skill. I am immensely grateful to those who mentored me in my younger days. I o en wonder what ualities they perceived in me I lacked a college education, yet I brought an insatiable thirst for knowledge.

In this issue, we spotlight a few young professionals in our market. One of them may mentor you if you ask. ou will also see articles on how to grow your business. If I can ever be of any help to you, please call me. I wish great success to all the young professionals today, as you are the future of the merald Coast.

WEEDS IN MY… !

So …. You installed a new landscape or maybe just got your existing landscape reworked with upgrades and now you would prefer to sit back and enjoy the fruits of your labor (or possibly other’s). As you may remember from a previous article, weeds are simply any plant that is growing where you do not want it to grow. Beware that there are thousands of weed seeds in a cubic foot of topsoil. All that new work that occurred in your planting beds stirred up the soil. This activity exposes previously dormant weed seeds to light and heat and this in turn triggers germination. No single action will provide the weed control needed. A combination of hand weeding, pre-emergent herbicide, a 2-3” layer of organic mulch, and even a spot spray of a post emergent herbicide will most likely be required to achieve the desired results. (Always read and follow the complete label when working with herbicides).

WEED FABRIC… SHOULD YOU USE IT?

Weed fabric is limited in its ability to stop weeds. Since the fabric has tiny holes for water and air to pass through, the weed seeds eventually will start germinating on top of the fabric and their tiny root hairs will pass through the fabric. The first year weed fabric gives roughly 85% control and falls to 65% the following year and then drops off sharply. Another negative is when you need to replace a plant or possibly add plants the weed fabric is ever

present and must be dealt with. In my experience, I recommend not using it. However, the exception to that is if the planting beds design is using a stone mulch. The fabric in this case is necessary to keep the stones from sinking into the soil over time.

WHAT IS THE BEST ORGANIC MULCH?

The one you want is the best one, right? To a degree, this is correct. Whatever organic mulch you choose to install in your planting beds has pros and cons. Pine straw mulch is technically the best mulch. If you can get Long Leaf Pine straw, it will cost more but may be worth it since it holds its color longer and does not deteriorate as fast as the commonly found Slash Pine needles. Pine straw mulch installed 3-4” thick creates a good layer that helps prevent weeds from germinating by blocking the light hitting the soil. Another advantage is as pine straw decomposes it slightly acidifies the top of the soil and this also holds down weed seeds from germinating. The slightly acidifying effect is beneficial to our acid loving plants like azaleas, camellias, and hollies. Since Pine straw decomposes almost completely in a year, it is not as likely for the thickness of the accumulated mulch to become a problem.

Dyed hardwood mulches have become extremely popular over the last 20 years. Having the longlasting wood mulch dyed (red, brown or black) makes it highly desirable. A plain wood mulch

article by Steve R. Black

that is not dyed fades quickly in the sunlight, turning grey in the first couple of months after installation. I personally despise the red dyed hardwood mulch since it is not a naturally occurring color in the landscape and fades to a pinkish orange color as it begins to fade. The brown or black just go to a lighter hue of their color and I find that more desirable.

Pine bark mulch holds its color well and it’s completely natural making it highly desirable as well. However, be careful with the bark mulches as they tend to float. The shredded pine

mulch is probably the best if you go that route. Shredded Cypress Mulch was once the most common of the wood mulches. Since its color fades quickly, the dyed mulches have taken that position.

Be careful not to build layer after layer each time you add organic mulch to your planting beds. Once you mulch the first time with a wood/bark mulch installing 2-3” of product, annually add a thin layer for color only. If organic mulches get too thick, they will retain moisture and thus attract termites and other insects. If

you find that has happened, it will be necessary to remove the mulch and start fresh.

Whether you do it or pay someone else to do it… having a weed free landscape (much like a weed free life) requires constant attention.

Symphony Sparks & Stars

Symphony Sparks and Stars was an evening of celebration for Independence Day on July 4. The Hunter Amphitheatre at Community Maritime Park was a perfect setting for the night of patriotic music offerings from the Pensacola Symphony Orchestra. For eight years now, Levin Papantonio Rafferty Attorney, Peter Mougey, has brought this event to the

Pensacola community. The PSO supporters and community enjoyed the star-spangled presentation followed by fireworks. The celebration included a Color Guard Presentation of Colors by the U.S. Navy with the U.S. National Anthem followed by a Navy jet flyover. Friends and families were encouraged to bring their blankets and chairs to hear the music following a scenic sunset on the bay.

Network Your Way to the Top

Networking is the age-old practice of building connections and relationships with others in both personal and professional realms. It’s like being a social buttery, but with a purpose and a fancier out t. Networking is a superpower that can fuel your personal and professional growth. By establishing connections with like-minded individuals, you open doors to new opportunities, gain valuable insights, and even nd support when you need it most.

Agreements are made over a glass of wine, contracts are signed on the dinner table, and the merging of major companies started with a handshake. Understanding the signi cance of networking can be the deciding factor in your success in the business world. Whether you are a seasoned professional, an entrepreneur, or a recent graduate, the power of networking cannot be underestimated. Building meaningful connections can open doors, create new opportunities, and propel your career to new heights. When you master the art of building genuine connections, leveraging di erent networking platforms, and nurturing relationships over time, you will be on your way to success.

To become a networking pro, you need to sharpen those interpersonal skills. Be a good listener, show genuine interest in others, and don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone. Remember, networking isn’t just about what others can do for you, but also how you can add value to their lives.

Some people like to grab a laptop and scroll through on line networking platforms such as LinkedIn -- but don’t underestimate the power of face-to-face interactions. Attending networking

events and conferences can give you the chance to meet industry leaders, exchange contact information, and even score some free snacks. It’s like speed dating for professionals, minus the awkward irting.

Once you’ve established connections, don’t let them fade away like memories from last year’s vacation. Keep the conversation going by maintaining regular communication. Send a friendly email, schedule a catch-up co ee date or send a happy birthday text. Consistency is the key.

Some quick tips on where to start. Join community groups, volunteer for charity events, sign up for chamber of commerce breakfasts and learn to play golf. Many a deal has been made on the course. Attend social gatherings, neighborhood watch programs and join a walking group. Don’t forget the business moguel in town is a regular person with regular habits. It is o en forgotten that the best place to network is where no one is expecting networking.

Networking isn’t a one-way street. If you want to earn the loyalty and support of your network, be ready to give as much as you receive. Share valuable resources, o er your expertise, and be a supportive cheerleader for others. Remember, it’s not just about what connections can do for you, but also how you can help them succeed. A er all, networking isn’t just about expanding your network; it’s also about building lasting friendships and creating a community of amazing people. Happy networking!

Chris Graye Graye’s Granite Owner

Chris Graye grew up in Bagdad, Florida, where after high school, he pursued a career in the trades. As the owner of Graye’s Granite, Chris enjoys educating clients on the types of stones and the proper care, as well as answering any questions a client may have. His goal is to help his customers leave the o ce with more understanding and knowledge than when they came in. Chris enjoys listening to clients’ ideas and working with them in executing the design to help the idea they envisioned come to life. Many customers tell Chris and his team that just listening to them and being willing to take things step by step means so much to them. They understand remodeling can be stressful and can help to guide through those rough waves to a smooth shore. Chris is always striving for the future and tries to be ahead of design trends, whether he travels to other countries/regions to see what’s next or does extensive research. The goal will always be to improve service further and further.

When he’s not making a client’s dreams a reality, you can find Chris at Family Ty’s Good Eats. He says Ty cooks every meal with love meant to satisfy your stomach along with your heart. The food is rich and delicious!

Fun fact -- When he was five years old, Chris had the nickname of Ross Perot, and rightfully so, because by the age of 12 he had created a landscaping business with the local children in the community to earn money.

Adam Grobmyer

Inspiritás of Pensacola Director of Community Relations

Adam Grobmyer volunteered as a 17-year-old to be paired with a resident and read poetry at a local skilled nursing/rehab center. The experience forever changed the relationship he had with older adults. After attending college in Fort Walton Beach, he began working in assisted living and is now the Director of Community Relations for Inspiritas. Adam says his community is a safe and secure place that promotes independence for individuals living with memory loss. Most of the professionals he works with are doctors, social workers, and advocates for seniors. He feels this gives an extra layer of support to those they serve. Working in assisted living/memory care for over seven years has given him a wealth of knowledge into the inner workings and regulations of a field that most people never think twice about until they are faced with managing the care of their loved ones. The field of senior living is filled with compassionate people who genuinely care about those they work with. Adam enjoys working with the senior community and says the best part of his workday is first thing in the morning, when he walks the community and says good morning to all of the residents.

Although Adam’s work weeks are busy, he loves catching performances at the Pensacola Little Theatre, relaxing at Opal Beach, or playing board games with his friends on the weekends. Fun fact -- Adam has a bit of a lucky streak. Whether it’s finding good parking spaces or winning $800 on his very first trip to a casino.

The Importance of a Strong Business Reputation

In today’s highly competitive business landscape, a strong reputation is an invaluable asset that can make or break a company. A positive reputation not only enhances customer trust and loyalty but also provides a signi cant competitive advantage. On the other hand, negative publicity and a damaged reputation can have severe repercussions on a business, impacting its brand image, customer perception, and ultimately, its bottom line.

In the competitive world of business, trust is everything. When people perceive you and your business as reliable, honest, and dependable, they are more likely to choose your products or services over those of your competitors.

Making customer service your number one priority is vital. When a customer has a problem, do not sweep it under the carpet. Take the time to personally call the client and discuss how you can come to a mutual agreement on how to help them. is client then becomes one of your very best advocates for promoting your business reputation in town.

Enhancing your personal reputation can be achieved through actively contributing to the community. Seek local charity events to sponsor and actively participate in their organization. By doing so, you will not only expand your network of supportive business associates, but also establish a positive presence within the community.

Consider attending prominent fundraisers and consider purchasing a table, inviting other business associates to join you. is not only demonstrates your commitment to philanthropy, but also provides an opportunity to network with like-minded professionals.

Any endeavor that increases your visibility in the market and enhances your standing in the eyes of others is invaluable for cultivating a strong personal reputation.

The Path to Success

Why Young Professionals Should Embrace Big Thinking in Business Sales

As a young professional - if you’re anything like me - you are incredibly motivated to set huge goals for your business and start hitting them ASAP.

That means you gotta think big, seriously BIG!

We’re talking life-changing stuff here!

Let’s dream about something huge, like becoming the ultimate sales champ in your company or taking your business from a million bucks to a whopping ten million! Yeah, that’s the kind of game you’re playing now.

Maybe you want to go out and hire 50 people by the end of the month! Or maybe you want to make more money than you’ve ever made in your life. Cha-ching! Picture yourself ne er flying mmer ial again ri ate et i es, a y (That’s my goal!)

And how about that dream home in the private community right on the beach? Imagine buying a place so lavish and luxurious, it blows everyone’s minds! Dream big, or go home, right?

t here s the eal if y r g al isn t a r ingly signi ant, it n t get y r engines re ing ll en quitting on a goal that isn’t big enough - and the only way to fail is to quit . So, aim high, shoot for the stars, and think BIG! You deserve it.

, n t rry a t the nitty gritty etails st yet Forget about the mechanics. First, unleash your imagination and write down what you REALLY, REALLY want. It’s like putting your dreams on paper and giving them life.

Oh, and here’s a pro tip: write those goals down twice a day – morning and night. Yeah, you heard me right! Most professionals only write their goals once per year when the ball drops in Times Square, but we’re leveling up here… If you write your goals down twice per day, every single day, that’s 730 times in a year – talk about serious commitment!

Seeing y r g als in la an hite ill ignite a re insi e you. It’s like waking up from a deep slumber and saying, “Let’s do this, world!”

But wait, there’s more! Surround yourself with winners. You n the saying, are the a erage f the e e le you spend the most time with”? Well, it’s kinda true! So, hang out with the big shots, the ones who’ve already conquered what you’re after.

anna fly ri ate R el s ith the et setters ream f that house on the 30A?

Find someone who’s already living that dream.

They’ll show you the ropes and help you climb that ladder.

, let s tal sa ri es, my frien hie ing greatness often means giving up some things. It could be time, people, or even businesses that aren’t serving your dreams. But it’s worth it! Think about those successful folks you admire. They had to make changes too, and look where it got them!

Alright, let’s get down to business – setting that mindblowing goal. No holding back! Think of the craziest, most outrageous thing you want. Got it? Write it down! Don’t rry a t h y ll a hie e it st yet hat ll me later

And remember, this ain’t no one-time thing. Make it a habit to write down your goals every morning when you wake up and every night before hitting the sack. Consistency is the name of the game!

By going big, surrounding yourself with winners, and being rea y t ma e sa ri es, y re n the fast tra t s ess m ra e th se massi e g als, an let s r this rney together. Your dreams are calling, and you’re ready to answer! Go out there and make it happen!

Rise & Shine Networking Breakfast

The Gulf Breeze Area Chamber of Commerce held its monthly Rise & Shine Networking Breakfast at St. Ann Catholic Church in Gulf Breeze on July 13. GBCC was founded in 1988 and has spent over 30 years serving the Santa Rosa and Escambia communities with dedicated volunteers helping large and small businesses alike. The agenda brought Christa ilson Chairman of the Board and President/CEO Grace Carbaugh, Kevin Fussell from the FDOT, along with Jack Harrison, Frank ucker, Rod Rowell and Jessica Francis. The owner of First Dance Ballroom Studio, Margaret Takacs, started the morning by sharing some endearing moments on how her career as a dancer started and provided a wonderful short video. She sponsored the morning s breakfast of scrambled eggs, bacon, fresh coffee, and many assorted pastries.

The talking point of the morning was the Project Status Update. Mr. Fussell from the FDO provided detailed insights on widening the 4. -mile project, due to be completed sometime in summer . The project will widen and improve the stretch of U.S. from a 4-lane to a -lane, along with resurfacing, new signage, and pavement markings from Bayshore Road to Portside Drive. Public information may be obtained, and encouraged to follow the progress https nwflroads.com projects 44 -

Pensacola Splashfest

The first Pensacola Splash Fest kicked off at the Community Maritime Park downtown on July . Patrons cooled off during the hot July day with a fun-filled -hour water, food, and cra event. There were numerous water slides, bounce houses, and slip-n-slides. They even had water obstacle courses all set up by A Rentals, who started setting up as early as in the morning. This fun-for-the-wholefamily event also included a watermelon eating competition, a dunk tank, and a foam party every minutes. There was music, plenty of food and drinks on hand as food trucks such as Hooked on Seafood, a e outi ue, merald Coast Popcorn, and -D ats were cookin up and putting together the good stuff as they always do. Just in case you didn t want to get wet, there were plenty of arts and cra s booths set up selling their goodies of hand-made jewelry, tumblers, and clothes, along with corn hole, and triple play sports games, as well. o round out the activities of things to do or not do , there were several misting tents to cool off under. Adults and kids of all ages enjoyed the beautiful day, the cold so serve ice cream or wa e desserts, a plethora of teas, and, of course, plenty of water.

BusineCasual A

lthough it seems the term “business casual” was made up to confuse the people of America and make them second guess their clothing choices every single day of their working lives, alas... the term is here to stay. While some people like to push the envelope and make their own rules when it comes to business casual, such as the Hawaiian shirt guy, or the Morgan Wallen concert t-shirt and leggings gal, most companies take the dress code pretty seriously. So, to help our professionals, from the newly hired to those h an n ently start senten es ith a in my ay e e g t s me ti s n h t f ll the style rules of business casual, and avoid a trip to HR.

For the Men Men have fairly simple options for shirts, as long sleeve button-down shirts are always a great look, minus the tie, of course. It gives a casual yet professional look without being fussy. Short sleeve polos or buttondowns are also a good option and are more accepted in warmer areas and during summertime. Sweaters and sweater vests are also acceptable over button downs and can create a more polished look. While blazers are not necessary, they are handy to keep around in case a big meeting pops up.

For the fellas, pairing your shirts with khakis or dress pants is the way to go to create a business casual look. Going neutral in the color department will make your pants more versatile and can be mixed and matched t reate ifferent l s hile s me f es nsi er eans t e siness as al, y may ant t he rst before strolling in like Michael Scott in his favorite jeans. earing a elt is a m st t m ete y r t t

HIDDEN GEMS

Some believe the only “gems” Northwest Florida has to offer are the white sand beaches, emerald-green waters, and the bushwhacker served at the tiki beach bar. However, Northwest Florida is a diverse region of the country that boasts not only beaches but also rivers, dense forests, caverns, springs, and much more.

FALLING WATERS STATE PARK 1130 STATE PARK ROAD, CHIPLEY, FL

So, Florida has waterfalls too. Yep, that’s right and the largest waterfall in Florida just so happens to be just a couple hours away. This gem, located right off of I-10 in Chipley, lorida, is a serene state park filled with beautiful scenery. The main attraction is of course, the waterfall. The waterfall drops 73 feet into the Falling Waters Sink, which is 100 feet deep and a nearly 20 feet wide cylindrical pit. What happens to the water after that... is a mystery, although it is assumed the water enters the Florida aquifer. The raised boardwalk trail allows visitors to see the waterfall from many different vantage points, from the bottom to the top, as well as other sinkholes that have formed throughout the years. Falling Waters State Park also has the unique appeal of having hills, yes...actual hills, that can make their trails a little more challenging than other parks.

Besides hiking their trails, Falling Waters State Park also offers camping, with both primitive and traditional sites available. There is a large three-acre lake that attracts swimmers and fisherman alike. The park is also a designated bird watching park as it’s been listed in the Great Florida Birding Trail, with over 100 different birds calling Falling Waters State Park home.

FLORIDA CAVERNS S TATE PARK 3345 CAVERNS ROAD, MARIANNA, F L

If you need a little break from the Florida heat, the Florida Caverns State Park is a perfect day trip. Located in Marianna, Florida, this state park offers a unique attraction for those who want to experience something a little different. The main feature at the park is the cave, a magical area filled with stalactites, stalagmites, flowstones, and draperies. These caves were formed millions of years ago when the area was covered by an ocean. Coral, shells, and sediment hardened into limestone which was then dissolved by acidic groundwater that created crevices below the surface. While these caves were large enough to walk through, they were helped along by the Civilian Conservation Corp, established in 1933, who enlarged the passageways by hand so visitors to the park could stand upright and move throughout the caves. Today, guided tours are available daily at the park, complete with an LED lighting system. For those not able to make the trek into the caves, a guided cave tour video is available in the visitor’s center.

Florida Caverns State Park also offers camping, swimming, paddling, and trails for hikers, bikers, and horseback riders. Including a challenging 6.8-milelong trail for those outdoor enthusiasts. Of course, the Florida wildlife and bugs abound, so plan ahead to bring bug spray and keep your eyes open for bobcats, deer, snakes, and more.

BLAC KWATER R IVER S TATE PARK 7720 D EATON BRIDGE ROAD, MILTON, F L

Sometimes you just have to “go on down to the river” and the Blackwater River has all you need for a day of river fun. Located in Milton, Florida, this park is an outdoor enthusiast’s dream. Despite the name, the river is more of a golden brown with contrasting bright white sandbars throughout. The river runs through forested areas and has the largest contiguous longleaf pine/wiregrass ecosystem remaining in the world, which some say is more rare than a tropical rainforest. Kayaking, canoeing, and floating the river are the most popular activities, with outside companies available for rentals and shuttles. Hiking trails are aplenty with a few different trails to choose from based on desired view, length, and skill level. Campsites are available with everything from RV hookups to sites for tent camping.

Wildlife is in abundance at the Blackwater River. It is a birdwatcher’s paradise, with wading birds making their way through the shallow waters to hunt. Florida favorites like deer, alligators, and snakes also enjoy all the Blackwater River area has to offer.

hi dren s rie u ort on ro t Names Leader Crista Brandt Selected as Valerie’s House Northwest Florida Director

roles. However, it is her personal journey as a grieving child that fuels her passion for helping others navigate through loss.

Having lost her mother to cancer when she was only 11 years old, Brandt understands firsthand the challenges faced by grieving children. It was through her own healing journey and volunteering that she witnessed the transformative power of children connecting and sharing their experiences with peers. Brandt’s mission is to turn her own tragedy into a gift for others, ensuring that no child feels alone in their grief.

Northeast Florida Sertoma Club Hosts 2023 Pensacola Dragon Boat Festival

Valerie’s House, (VH) the leading nonprofit dedicated to helping children grieving the death of a loved one, is pleased to announce the appointment of Crista Brandt as the Northwest Florida Director. Brandt brings her extensive managerial experience and personal passion for supporting grieving children to this pivotal role.

Brandt’s journey with Valerie’s House began when she spearheaded the launch of the Pensacola Chapter in late 2020. As a dedicated volunteer for two years, Brandt played a crucial role in serving grieving families in the community. Now, as the Northwest Florida Director, she will lead Valerie’s House, Pensacola full-time, providing invaluable support to those grieving a loss.

The demand for VH programs has been rapidly growing, with an expansion of nearly 50% in 2023 alone. With the recent establishment of a permanent location and the receipt of funding from Escambia Children’s Trust, the timing was ideal for Brandt to dedicate her efforts full-time to the Pensacola location.

In her new role, Brandt will continue to serve grieving families and oversee group nights at the VHP location on East Gadsden Street. As the Northwest Florida Director, Brandt will be a prominent figure and advocate for VH in the panhandle region. She will be more involved in developing community partnerships, expand her executive leadership responsibilities, and contribute to the management of programs for children and families, ensuring that VH makes a positive impact in the community.

Brandt brings over 25 years of leadership and advocacy experience to her position. With a degree from the University of Georgia Terry College of Business, she has excelled in various technology and software consulting, sales, and project management

SERTOMA is a 501(c)3 and 501(c)4 notfor-profit international organization. Every year Sertoma clubs raise more than $20 million for local community service projects. Through these projects, as well as grants and scholarships, Sertoma clubs return those funds to their respective communities – and they have loads of fun doing it while building lifelong friendship.

State of Florida awards $2.5 Million Landmark Investment to Pensacola Habitat for Humanity to Build Homes, Buy Land

Under Gov. Ron DeSantis’ approved Fiscal Year 2023-24 budget, Pensacola Habitat for Humanity will receive $2,549,565 from legislative appropriations for new affordable homes and a Community Land Trust supporting workforce families and active duty military men, women and their families in Escambia and Santa Rosa Counties. With assistance from the offices of Sen. Doug Broxson, Rep. Michelle Salzman and Rep. Alex Andrade, Pensacola Habitat for Humanity was fortunate to be included in housing conversations leading to funding these two viable housing projects.

“Cost and dwindling housing inventories are adversely impacting too many of our citizens. It’s encouraging to know that local and state officials recognize how important it is to create and sustain housing solutions. Not only do we as an organization feel honored to be the trusted stewards of these project funds,” Sam Young, Pensacola Habitat for Humanity President and CEO explained, “but on a more personal level, I’m inspired to play a bigger role in the lives of our workforce families and the men and women who serve our country. This generous support will play a critical role in building lives, communities and hope.”

Appropriation funds will be used for the development of a 30-parcel subdivision in Pensacola for workforce families, of which 20% of the new homes will be designated as rentals for active-duty military members and their families. Funds will also help to launch the Northwest Florida Community Land Trust (CLT), a shared equity homeownership model designed to make homeownership attainable for low-income households. It guarantees that the home can only be sold to other lowto-moderate income households, creating a permanent affordable housing stock. This is the first CLT in Florida history to be funded by state legislature.

What is your hometown and how did you end up on the Pensacola area?

I was born and raised in Memphis, Tennessee. After high school, I moved to Springfield, MO to study business in college. I enlisted in the US Navy in 2000 and was stationed in Pensacola to train to be a rescue swimmer; however, I was honorably discharged for medical reasons after a few years. I met my now-wife while I was here, and we decided to build our lives here.

What is your profession?

I am the Senior Vice President for Community Bank. My mother was an accountant and auditor and I have always been fascinated with the work she did. Math always seemed to come easy for me and I like to help others. Banking ties both together. After the Navy, I began working for Wachovia Bank. It did not take long for me to see how I, along with others in the bank, helped to make a difference in the lives of other people, and it was transformative. Thus, my passion and love for this career was born. I have spent over 20 years in the banking industry, continuing and striving to have a positive impact on the lives of those around me, personally and professionally. I love this community and want to give back, so I choose to actively participate and serve on numerous non-profit boards and most recently, started coaching a non-profit basketball team.

What are some of your favorite things about Pensacola?

I love history and Pensacola is steeped in history. My wife and I chose to raise our family here because of the diversity, culture and growing economy. We can always find something to do! From seafood festivals to Mardi Gras, to relaxing on the sandy white beaches. Such a great city!

Three words that best describe you. Outgoing, approachable, and adventurous. Favorite places in Pensacola?

Peg Leg Pete’s is a favorite spot. I also take advantage of the wonderful golf courses that stretch along the Gulf Coast.

What is one thing that you do not go a day without? I don’t go a day without praying and doing one good deed for someone else.

Finish this statement, I AM PENSACOLA because…

...I symbolize what Pensacola stands for -- community. I work in the community; I volunteer in the community. It’s about diversity, compassion, and acceptance. Coming together as one body for the greater good. Building those up around us when they are down and going that extra mile to help those around us succeed.
