CLEBURNE COUNTY

BEAUTIFUL VISTAS

ILLICIT JOY FROM EVERY VIEW

Cleburne County could just as well be called the County of Water The county boasts a lake, a river, a dam, twelve natural springs and waterfalls both well-known and hidden

Greers Ferry Lake is made up of two big bodies of water connected by a “narrows”

“The Big Water” is the largest open area of the lake on the south side near Heber Springs

The north side of the lake, near the small town of Greers Ferry, offers visitors a different scenic view . Whatever area you choose to visit, make time to see it

all each area has something different and unique to offer like the spectacular view from atop Sugarloaf Mountain standing nearly 700 feet above the valley in Heber Springs on the banks of the Little Red River

How about the 300-millionyear-old stone spheres in Prim?

Are you a cyclist who craves a challenge with rewarding views?

There’s a 60-mile loop from Hwy 16 & 25 in Heber Springs through Drasco and back

Maybe golf is more your style Stop in the Tannenbaum Golf Club, voted by Golf Digest as

one of the best places to play There’s also Red Apple Inn, an Eden Isle Resort voted by Golf Digest as one of the 50 most scenic in the country, which features an 18-hole championship golf course with a panoramic view . If your family’s looking for a day filled with living history, you’ll want to visit the Arkansas Frontier farm in Quitman

Cleburne County offers breathtaking views, hiking, biking, country markets, a historic downtown with secret finds, hidden treasures and water adventures throughout

ADVENTURES

HEBER SPRINGS

ADVENTURE WAITING TO HAPPEN

WATER ADVENTURES WITH CHARMING PLACES OF PLAY

Many people believe that Heber Springs was named after the seven natural springs that flow from the ground located near the center of town in what is now known as Spring Park . However, the founder, Max Frauenthal, named Heber in honor of a prominent doctor from Memphis, where he was also from at the time

The seven natural springs had a popularity and a following all their own as Spring Park has been attracting people since the 1930s, well before the town was named Heber Springs The park is home to a walking trail and other outdoor entertainment and hosts a variety of events each year

As a gateway entrance to Greers Ferry Lake and the Little Red

River, the United States Corps of Engineers completed Greers Ferry Lake Dam in 1962, and it was dedicated by President John F Kennedy in October of 1963 The work of this project has produced benefits of beauty, business and play The Dam Site provides a marina, campgrounds, facilities, and opportunities for boating, sailing, water skiing, swimming, fishing, scuba diving and hiking, including a multi-purpose fitness trail . View the Dam from JFK Overlook Hike the Mossy Bluff or Buckeye Trail and get a majestic view of the river from above Pick up the trail from behind the Wm Carl Garner Visitor Center

Greers Ferry Lake Dam is a man-made marvel, but there are natural marvels nearby that you don’t want to miss Just around

the corner from the Wm Carl Garner Visitor Center you’ll find Collins Creek A great place for picnics, or an afternoon hike shaded by trees, flora and fauna Here you’ll enjoy waterfalls throughout the trail

Another natural beauty nearby is Bridal Veil Falls A popular spot to watch one of our area’s most beautiful waterfalls

Just around the corner is Cornelius Falls, and a few blocks away you’ll find the infamous Sugarloaf Mountain Be sure to explore all the new trails thanks to the Sugarloaf Heritage Council Also, check out the Greers Ferry Lake Trails Council at gfltc.com for more trails and outdoor excursions

AUGUSTA

Located along the banks of the White River, this historic town was established in 1848 and is also the county seat The area was a settlement for the Chickasaw Indians and the tribe built log huts along high bluffs overlooking the White River – becoming an important trail between the Chickasaw and other nearby tribes Although this historic town was virtually destroyed during the Civil War, the residents rebuilt, with many structures still standing today - such as the impressive Woodruff County Courthouse and the Gothic Revival-style Augusta Presbyterian Church Both are on the National Register of Historic Places, along with Augusta Memorial Park .

The town is well-known as a favored spot for fishermen and boaters alike who take full advantage of the picturesque river What not to miss? Peeples family farm Pick from patches of pumpkins and cotton, get lost in a 20-acre hand-cut corn maze and play with barnyard animals

COTTON PLANT

Cotton Plant got its name when William Lynch in 1846 planted cottonseed beside his store The plant became so popular that people began calling the community Cotton Plant In 1852, the town got its first post office and the name stuck In the early 1900s, Cotton Plant was a cultural center with an opera house and several music and literary clubs Two music talents came out of Cotton Plant: Sister Rosetta Thorpe, a gospel music superstar, (influencing musicians such as Bob Dylan, Elvis Presley, and Johnny Cash), and William Bunch, known as Peetie Wheatstraw, an influential blues singer of the 1930s Cotton Plant’s Historical Museum, founded in 2014, keeps the town’s rich history alive

Mosey on down to Woodruff County’s popular place for live theater and special stores in McCrory An old movie theater restored to be a stately stage for live performances, the Ken Theatre provides a historical haven for performing arts Stop and smell the roses at local favorites including McCrory Flower Shop and Marketplace and the Crafty Corner Flowers and Gifts Historical Raney Park, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, also boasts buildings with 20th-century commercialstyle architecture along cities downtown
