A SHORT DRIVE DOWN THE ROAD

Beebe - Just down the road you’ll find this small easy to maneuver city full of unique flea-market and antiquing options. This half hour trip boasts eight flea-market and antique shops. You can easily spend a few hours or the whole day browsing for clever finds.

Heber Springs & Fairfield Bay - For generations, locals have enjoyed taking the scenic mountain drive to “Heber.” Whether it’s a summer day spent swimming, boating or fishing at Greers Ferry Lake or a spring day hiking at Bridal Veil Falls and Sugar Loaf Mountain Island, you will surely enjoy the outdoor fun on Greers Ferry Lake as much as we do. Our favorite day trip will take you on a short drive to the mountains during the fall when the color changing foliage is at its peak.

1

HOUR AWAY

Little Rock – In less than an hour’s drive you can find yourself enjoying fun shopping, museums, concerts, history, nature, culture and more. There are many options for entertainment in Little Rock, the state’s capital city. Choose from William J. 1 2 HOURS to

Mountain View - Another scenic day trip will lead you over the hills and through the woods to beautiful Mountain View Arkansas. You’ll find plenty to explore from the Ozark Folk Center State Park and downtown Folk Music where locals fill the square on Saturday nights “pickin’ and playin’”. Or enjoy the Blanchard Springs Caverns underground cave tour and playing in the cool clear waters flowing from the cave’s exit. Also favored are the swimming holes, fishing, and kayaking or canoeing in Sylamore Creek. Near Mountain View, the 50-mile Syllamo Mountain Bike Trail is designated by the International Mountain Biking Association as an “Epic Ride,” a status only 37 trails across the nation currently hold.

Hot Springs - If you’re looking for a completely unique adventure, you’ll want to visit Hot Springs. Hot Springs National Park is historically known for the natural hot springs believed by American Indians to have healing properties. These hot springs are the focus of a great Bath House Row experience. Hot Springs has some great experiences to enjoy at any age, like Garvan Woodland Gardens, Oaklawn Racing & Casino, and Magic Springs and Crystal Falls Water and Theme Park. Other “don’t miss” attractions include the Gangster Museum of America, Hot Springs Off-Road Vehicle Park, Hot Springs Mountain Tower, Ouachita National Forest, and Lake Catherine and Hamilton State Park.

The 37.5 acre plowed field is open for visitors to pan for their own gemstones and possibly a diamond which are still actively being found. It’s a trip worth the drive!

Helena - Music and gaming are always great reasons to take a day trip, and Helena has both options for your enjoyment. The King Biscuit Blues Festival is held the weekend before Columbus Day each October and attracts hundreds of thousands of people to the banks of the Mississippi River. #SEARCY

@CITYOFSEARCY

Re-named in 1837 to honor Richard Searcy, a prominent Arkansas Legislator, Searcy was originally named White Sulphur Springs for the local spring of the same name. The spring dried up many years before the name change, hence making the transition to Searcy acceptable to many. Searcy operates under a mayor/council form of government. The Mayor, Clerk Treasurer and City Attorney each serve a four-year term. The eight Council Members serve two-year terms. The Mayor is responsible for management of all the City’s departments and custodian of all City property, while the Clerk Treasurer is responsible for records and all financial documentation. Council Members review and pass all City resolutions and ordinances. In total, more than 200 workers including a 60 plus member Police Department and a 50 plus member Fire Department serve Searcy residents and business owners. Searcy is currently rated a Public Protection Class 1 by the Insurance Services Office (ISO). The City also operates the following departments: Street, Sanitation, Code Enforcement, Parks and Recreation, Searcy Municipal Airport, District Court, Engineering and Information Technology with the White County Regional Library being operated jointly by the City and the County. The White County Judge also serves as the Chief Executive Officer for the County, a four-year term. Residents elect a legislative body called the Quorum Court, composed of 13 justices of the peace, each representing a geographic district within the county. Together, the County Judge and the Justices of the Peace govern the county.

#OURNEIGHBORS

White County has a diverse, beautiful landscape stretching from the Delta east to the foothills in north and west. The only thing more colorful than our landscape, is the friends and neighbors who call White County home.

NORTHWEST WHITE COUNTY The northwest part of the county is part of the Ozark Mountain foothills and has several small towns for you to call home. The city of Pangburn is well known for its proximity to the Little Red River and its annual 4th of July Celebration. One of the more popular stops there is Suzie’s Ice Cream shop where you can find ice cream or some fantastic fried rice or tacos. The town of Rose Bud has a brewing reputation for coffee. It’s home to RoZark Hills Roasterie, Inc., where their own beans are roasted and ground on site. They have eight signature blends not including espresso. And, while in Rose Bud, check out the Rambler Café for outstanding steaks. Both cities are served by their own school districts, Pangburn and Rose Bud. The last town in this area is Letona, possibly the only town on earth with the name. No one really knows where the name came from, but the town was founded in 1908.

NORTHEAST WHITE COUNTY In the northeast part of the county lies the city of Bald Knob, the third largest city in the county, and often promoted as “Where the Ozarks meet the Delta.” Some of the finest bird watching in the U.S. can be found at Henry Gray/Hurricane Lake Wildlife Refuge and Bald Knob National Wildlife Refuge located nearby. And after a day of bird watching, be sure to dine at the Bulldog Restaurant if strawberries are in season, be sure to enjoy one of their famous strawberry shortcakes. Your trip would not be complete without a stop at the train museum. After the Bradford Allen Railroad Station was built, the town of Bradford was formed. It quickly became a major shipping point for items such as strawberries, grapes, cotton, lumber, and pecans. Today, Bradford is known for its fine waterfowl hunting and world champion dog trials. Both cities - Bald Knob and Bradford - have their own school districts. Finish your northeast White County trip on future Interstate 57 by visiting the small, incorporated town of Russell. Their homecoming is held every odd year and invites current and past residents to visit and catch up.

48 2021 SEARCY GUIDE

CENTRAL WHITE COUNTY Most of the communities and towns in the central and southeast portions of our county were established based on their proximity to the Little Red and White Rivers. The centrally located town of Judsonia, is one such town, founded in 1840 and resting on the banks of the Little Red River. Looking for a photo and hashtag op!? Visit the Judsonia bridge. Built in 1924, it is one of three known swing bridges in the state, and the only one with a cantilevered swinging truss. You can still hear and see the rumblings of trains in Kensett, which had its beginnings in the railroad boom. Born in 1872, the community was named for Thomas Harrison Kensett II, railroad investor. Don’t leave without a stop at the country café to enjoy some southern comfort food. Just on the outskirts of Searcy, you will find the town of Higginson, established in 1875.

SOUTHWEST WHITE COUNTY Beebe is the second largest city in White County. Named for Roswell Beebe, president of the railroad that first ran through the county, it is centrally located near Little Rock and is within minutes of both the Ozarks and the Delta. Its chief industry is education, with Beebe Public Schools and ASU-Beebe being the major employers. While you are there, make sure to plan time to visit their popular antique stores and flea markets. A short drive away is the city of McRae, which was named for Confederate General Dandridge McRae. Feel the romance by making the town of Romance your home. Each year their post office receives mail from all over the world, to be post stamped from the Romance, Arkansas Post Office. Your trip would not be complete without a visit to Romance Falls, a beautiful waterfall that the locals know about.

SOUTHEAST WHITE COUNTY A drive east on Highway 13 will lead you to the town of West Point, a small community that sits on the banks of the Little Red River. A good boat launch is located here. Take a step back in time in the city of Georgetown. Overlooking the totally gorgeous White River, Georgetown is a tiny town with a population of only 126. Founded in 1789, it is also the oldest continuously settled community in Arkansas. You’ll find great fried catfish in either town. Farther south you will run into the town of Griffithville. Established in 1898, it is believed that the town is named after the Griffith family.
