Poet Laureate At Longwood By BETTY BRYANT David Gamache. of Charlottesville. is a published poet. But a few short years ago. he hated poetry. "When I was in high school, we analyzed' poetry." Gamache said. "I hated it with a passion. Talking about the meter of a poem turned me off immediately." Now a senior business major at Longwood College. Gamache submitted six poems last fall to the American Poetry Anthology. Four of his poems were chosen for publication in the 1990 edition of the anthology. Encouraged by that success, he sent several more poems recently to the World of Poetry contest. He received Honorable Mention" in that competition, and one of his poems will be included in the next edition, to be published in April of 1991. "About two years ago. I was dating a girl who wrote
poems — really morbid stuff," Gamache said. "I thought if she's writing those crazy things, so can I. So I tried it." He wrote several poems and then put them away out of sight. "When I found them a year or so later. I decided they were pretty good," Gamache said, "so I wrote a few more." Three of his poems in the American Poetry Anthology deal with 20th-century Christianity. Gamache said. Their titles are "Faith." The Traveler." and "Purple - The Color of the Praetorium." These poems "express my feelings about what we are losing, and what we are doing to ourselves by abusing what we have been given." he said. Gamache said he "has no idea what inspired the fourth poem. It Just came to me." He called it "Moonlight." Moonlight creeps across the ground Casting shadows down and
down revealing much of never told into the night they unfold. Reaching to hearts of those who hear. It's like a love none can see. Gamache plans to enroll in a Wilderness Education training program next summer. He will complete requirements for his Bachelor of Science in Business Administration degree from Longwood in December of 1991. After that. 1 want to open my own small business, an outdoor recreation store," he said. And on the weekends 111 teach outdoor skills." In the meantime Gamache will keep on writing. "Lately I've written a few short stories," he said. "Maybe I'll send them off to some publisher. Who knows what can hap pen?"
