When asked about the research that went into Oral History, Smith replied: "It wasn't really research — it's Just the kind of thing I write down whenever I'm visiting my folks In Grundy. I decided to write the Look, finally, in order to use all the material I've been collecting and the Appalachian songs and legends I'd been reading about." Smith has won the O.
