2nd Annual Shreve, Crump & Low Cup The second annual Shreve, Crump & Low Cup is being played from June 9th through June 16th at Greenwich Polo Club. Shreve, Crump & Low will take center stage as a tournament title sponsor in its fifth season with the club.

The final will host an exclusive event hosted by Shreve, Crump & Low and Hublot, to celebrate the events with clients and friends.

Shreve, Crump & Low and Hublot watches are partners for the third year in a row, Hublot has a very strong sport focus and has brand ambassadors from boxing to soccer and tennis.

–How long have you been playing the sport?

–Since I was about 6 years old, my Dad and my Uncle played and I started playing at the farm with them.

–Typical day during the season?

–I wake up around 7:30 am, I go to the barn and usually ride a horse or two in the morning. In the afternoon we have practice or games. Most my mornings are spent drinking mate with the grooms, the vet comes around and we all check the horses, it depends on what the day schedule is like. I usually eat lunch at the club or around the barn, and we take a nap after lunch until around 2:30 pm. In the summer, we start later when it’s not so hot, in the winter the afternoon starts earlier.

–Where do you usually play throughout the year?

–Florida in the U.S. winter, this year I came to Greenwich for the summer, and then I’ll go to Argentina in September. I am playing with White Birch team in Greenwich for the June and July tournaments and I will play the East Coast Open with Postage Stamp Farm, as I did last year.

–Favorite part of playing polo?

–I love horses, it’s what attracts me the most. Having my horses perform well is a very satisfying. Polo is a big team sport, it goes well beyond what you see on the field. Between the grooms, vets, trainers, friends, teammates, it’s a big group of people working together, we eat together, play cards, have barbecues, every hour of the day we are connected throughout the season.

–What tournaments are the most important that you won?

–Camara de Diputados, up to 32 handicap. The teams that don’t qualify for the Argentine Palermo Open because of lower handicap rating, or because they didn’t make it through the qualifying series, they play this very prestigious tournament, which is played in conjunction with the Palermo Open. I also won the Republica Cup in Argentina, and the Triple Crown in Sotogrande, Spain.

–Favorite thing to do when not on the field?

–I like to spend time at the farm.

–Favorite all-time horse?

–El Barco (the ship) was my favorite, I played the Potrillo (foal) tournament when I was a little kid and later the Camara de Diputados. He was with me from 0 to 7 handicap.

–Professional polo players you look up to?

–Mariano Aguerre, Milo Fernandez Araujo, and Gonzalo Heguy.

–Ultimate Goals with polo?

–I reached 8 goal handicap at 29 years old. Of course the goal is always to reach a 10 goal handicap, but it’s not the easiest, so many factors play into it. We always strive. Definitely would like to have my own horse breeding operation in the future. 

Age: 20 Handicap: 5 Team: The Island House Home Country: Argentina but grew up in the U.S. and I am an American citizen, I played for team USA this year in Florida.

–Playing the sport for how long?

–Since I was 6!

–Pre-game ritual –I try to stay as focused as I can and avoid distractions.

–Typical day during the season?

–We wake up around 8 am, go to the barns, check the horses, talk with the grooms, see what the plan is for the day, and schedule the week (practice or games). If we have a practice we take a set, if we have a game that day, we take the horses for an individual ride. It all depends on how many games we have planned for the week. One game per week is ideal but sometimes we play two games per week.

–Where do you usually play throughout the year?

–In the U.S. I play the Florida/Palm Beach winter season –we play a lot of polo there and it’s very competitive.

Greenwich in the summer is amazing, this is only my second season here.

Iwill play the June-July tournaments with The Island House. After the seson is over at Greenwich Polo Club, I will go to Argentina, and we’ll play a lot of games through December.

–Favorite part of playing polo?

–I really like horses, I’ve been involved with horses since I was born. The sport is amazing because you

get to meet a lot of people, play with them, and develop relationships that can last a lifetime.–What are your ultimate goals with polo?

–To reach the highest handicap I can, to be really organized with horses, with my team. To be as prepared as possible in every place I go to play. To reach the ultimate 10 goal handicap would be my dream!

–You’ve played against your Dad and with your Dad, what is that relationship like?

–I prefer playing with him, we play a lot together. This season it’s going to be tough because I’m competing against him. We are on opposing teams and we don’t even talk about the game. We have a good relationship but he does his own thing and I do mine. The coaching stops then and there!

–Favorite local hangout?

–Happiness Is in the mornings.

–Favorite thing to do when not on the field?

–I like playing soccer or tennis. I’d be a professional soccer player if I wasn’t a polo player.

–Favorite song?

–El Garrote by Nene Malo, an Argentine cumbia style band.

–Favorite all-time horse?

–Azucar, a grey mare. I’ve been playing her since I was around 10 years old.

She arrived as a green pony, she was so calm to stick and ball on her. One of my best ponies, we’ve been playing together for a long while.

She’s really calm, really good moving sideways and handy.

–Professional polo players you look up to?

–Obviously Adolfito Cambiaso, Facundo Pieres and my Dad Mariano Gonzalez. 

10 things to know about polo n EACH

GAME CONSISTS OF TWO TEAMS: You’ll find 4 players on each team for official matches, competing on a field 300 yards by 160 yards, equivalent to 10 football fields, with goal posts on either end. Similar to hockey or soccer, each team attempts to score goals in the opponents’ goal. The winner is the team that scores the most goals. Polo ponies are changed every chukker (period), they are called ponies, although they are full-grown horses. You can find 80-100 horses on the field.

n CHUKKERS:

The periods in which games are divided. Each chukker is 7 and a half minutes; 6 chukkers are played in each match at Greenwich. The word is derived from India.

n MALLET:

Stick made out of a bamboo and wood used to hit the ball.

n GOALS:

The direction of the game changes after every score, to make the conditions even.

n OFF-SIDE:

The right side of

the horse. n NEARSIDE:

The left side of

the horse. n HANDICAP:

The way a player is rated. From -2 to 10 depending on their skills as a rider and player.

A 10-goaler is considered the best and less than 100 players in the world have ever reached this achievement. Handicaps are assessed continuously throughout the year, and they are expressed in goals to describe a player’s value to the team, not the goals he is expected to score. A game is put together matching the overall

handicap of all players. The level of teams for low and high goal polo games vary within each region of the world. n LINE

OF THE BALL: This is “the right of way” in polo, created to avoid dangerous situations. It works like a 2-way highway and it changes every time the ball is hit.

This line may never be crossed by other players. n RIDING-OFF:

When a horse makes another horse move away from the line of the ball.

n HOOKING: When a player hooks

another’s mallet. This can only be done while the mallet is swinging down. 
