Our Philosophy Students at Greenwich Catholic School are rooted in faith, surrounded by community and committed to excellence. Greenwich Catholic School, in partnership with parents and parishes, is focused on the formation of the whole Christian person in the tradition of the Roman Catholic Church. Our learner-centered curriculum maintains high academic standards, ensures students are actively engaged through a variety of instructional methods and emerging technologies, and promotes collaboration and higher level thinking skills. Within a welcoming, Christ-centered environment, students are made aware of their role as members of the Christian community through the teaching of Catholic doctrine, participation in liturgy and worship, and involvement in service projects. Members of our school community are encouraged to live as Disciples of Christ, serving all people by sharing the gifts and talents received from God. This Annual Report is dedicated with great appreciation to our many donors, parent volunteers, faculty, and staff for their commitment to ensure the success of our children and our school.

A Message from the Principal, Patrice Kopas It gives me great joy to present the 2016-2017 Annual Report. As the sole Catholic elementary school serving the greater Greenwich area, we are fortunate to have a thriving student body, a talented faculty, a robust campus and, of course, families and friends like you who support the mission of GCS. Thank you.

The past year marked numerous institutional milestones and reaffirmed Greenwich Catholic School’s place and purpose in our community.

In July we received renewed accreditation from the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC).

Each faculty and staff member participated in a two-year process that included a self-study and concluded with a four-day on-site evaluation from a visiting committee.

We received numerous commendations citing the commitment to our Catholic identity and attention to the individual needs and interests of our students. The NEASC report also provided directives to improve campus safety, and I am happy to report that all issues have been addressed and remediated.

Our new mission statement, motto, and crest are also a direct result of the visiting committee’s recommendation that GCS adopt and recognize one mission statement. The process took about three months. A cross section of the school community, which included teachers, staff, students, alumni, School Advisory Board members, parents, and community members was tasked with answering the questions, “What makes GCS unique?” “Who do we serve?” “What are our desired outcomes for those who we serve?” From those answers, commonalities were identified and the new mission statement was formed.

The end result: Greenwich Catholic School provides students with a life-long intellectual and spiritual foundation through a rigorous and innovative curriculum focused on faith, critical thinking, responsibility, and service.

GCS’ mission is at once realistic and aspirational. It is what we do, who we are, and what we strive for each day.

Our new motto, which reads “Rooted in Faith – Surrounded by Community – Committed to Excellence” represents our promise to each other. It’s a promise to our students, teachers, and families. It’s something that we can all remember and be proud to say everyday.

In October, we celebrated the much-anticipated opening of the renovated and expanded Upper School, which houses our 6th, 7th, and 8th grades. The scope of construction included a completely renovated interior, the addition of two classrooms, a new roof, an energy efficient HVAC system, and ADA compliant restrooms. The $2.3 million project was made possible by gifts to the Imagine capital campaign, totaling almost $2 million.

Prior to blessing the new building, Bishop Caggiano stated, “This is a totally unique and historic day in the life of Greenwich Catholic School. Today will change the future of this school and let everyone know that GCS is here to stay forever.” As he stood on the front steps of the remodeled building, Bishop Caggiano went on to draw parallels between the significance of the campaign’s name, Imagine, and the road ahead for GCS students. “This is what we are doing here today: we are imagining what your future is going to be like,” he explained. “Because of your Catholic education, you are going to unlock your future. Every single one of you has a great destiny ahead.”

It is due to the incredible support and generosity of our school community that our students do, indeed, face a great destiny and a future full of possibilities. Most importantly, they are moving forward with the grace of the Holy Spirit as disciples of the Catholic faith.

From Jan Montana, School Advisory Board Chair It has been an honor and a privilege to serve Greenwich Catholic School as Chair of the School Advisory Board. The primary responsibilities of the Advisory Board are to define and advance the strategic direction of the school, and to ensure sound financial planning and management.

We had an exciting year, and are pleased to highlight a few of our key accomplishments: • Following our successful Imagine capital campaign, the new Upper School is now a reality. Construction began during the summer and was completed in October. Our new building is state-of-the-art. Upper School students are now housed in a single building, and the space is designed to maximize collaborative, hands-on learning. We also save substantial money on maintenance and energy costs.

• Prior to the start of the 2016-2017 academic year, we updated our mission statement. We formed a committee of parents, faculty, students, and board members with the directive to honor our past heritage while looking to our future. Our new mission statement exemplifies a strong commitment to our faith as we strive for excellence: Greenwich Catholic School provides students with a life-long intellectual and spiritual foundation through a rigorous and innovative curriculum focused on faith, critical thinking, responsibility, and service.

• The Advancement committee had its most successful year in recent history. The Annual Fund raised a record $228,000. We had 88% participation from our families, and 100% participation from our extremely dedicated faculty and staff. Our Back-to-Basics Benefit raised another $108,000. Because tuition does not cover all of the expenses of running the school, our Advancement efforts are critical to the success of Greenwich Catholic School. Thank you to all who contributed!

THE ANNUAL FUND The Annual Fund continues to be the backbone of our philanthropic endeavors at GCS, and the 2016-2017 campaign achieved new heights with a record rate of 88% family participation. For four consecutive years, our faculty and staff reached 100% participation, and for second year in a row, every 8th grade family gave to the Annual Fund, which is a lasting legacy and message to all of us about supporting our school.

WAYS TO GIVE

Tax-deductible gifts to the Annual Fund Campaign fulfill many needs. Supporting the Annual Fund Campaign directly funds GCS’s operating budget. Your contribution ensures we retain highly skilled faculty, maintain and enhance our campus and facilities and bolster our athletic, art and music programs.

Your gift to the Annual Fund Campaign is an investment in the academic, spiritual and experiential enrichment of our children.

Every gift, no matter how large or small, is an important one!

Greenwich Catholic School’s major sources of income are tuition, facilities rentals, and fundraising. This year, tuition and fees covered only 80% of the 2016-2017 operating costs of the school. Our fundraising events, especially the Annual Fund Campaign, help to fill the gap. Specially-designated gifts provide enhancements to our buildings, grounds and our academic programs. We depend on our dedicated Greenwich Catholic School families and alumni to help keep our school in a position of fiscal stability. You can support Greenwich Catholic School in several ways:

WHAT IS THE ANNUAL FUND CAMPAIGN?

This is the school’s fundraising priority because it helps provide for the same items covered in the operating budget: tuition assistance, academic programs, faculty and staff development, technology enhancements, maintenance and renovation of the GCS buildings and grounds, and quality athletic, music, art and special programs. Because tuition doesn’t cover the entire cost of a GCS education, we ask every family to support the Annual Fund Campaign at a level that is appropriate to their own family budget. Every dollar helps.

Gifts of Cash

Cash gifts allow us to strengthen programs for the benefit of all our students. Gifts may be in the form of cash, check, credit card, debit card, pledge and on-line donation to our website www.gcsct.org.

Gifts of Stock

It may be tax-wise to contribute stock rather than cash. Gifts of appreciated stock can provide tax advantages. Furthermore, you receive an income tax deduction for the stock’s full fair market value on the date you make the gift. (Stock must have been held more than a year.)

I VOLUNTEER FOR GCS. DO I STILL NEED TO SUPPORT THE ANNUAL FUND CAMPAIGN?

Many volunteers commit their time and energy to GCS and their support is crucial to the school’s day-to-day operations and continued growth. However, financial support of Greenwich Catholic School must remain a priority for every member of the GCS community.

Matching Gifts

Many companies match contributions that their employees make to non-profit institutions such as Greenwich Catholic School. Most matches are on a 1:1 basis, but some companies match even higher. Upon making your own gift, you may request a matching gift form from your company.

DOES IT MATTER WHEN I CONTRIBUTE?

Yes, it does matter. A gift or pledge made early in the school year is a great advantage to the school because we will know how much money will be available to support the budget for this school year. The Annual Fund Campaign mirrors the school’s financial year, beginning on July 1st and ending on June 30th.

Bequests

Bequests are gifts made through one’s will. Donors may bequeath cash, property or a portion of one's estate.

Life Income Gifts

A life income gift, such as a charitable remainder trust or annuity trust, is an ideal way to make a substantial gift to the school. Deferred gifts such as these have significant tax advantages and can increase your income while benefiting Greenwich Catholic School at the same time.

ANGEL DAY A tradition for more than 20 years, Angel Day is one of the most anticipated annual Christmas events at GCS. Students invite their “Angels” (grandparents, aunts, uncles, and special friends) to spend the morning at GCS. The day begins with Mass in the gymnasium followed by a sit-down breakfast served by volunteer parents.

Afterwards, the Angels tour the campus and visit students’ classrooms.

The May Family Scholarship Fund This scholarship was established in 1994 by Matthew and MaryBeth Brown.

MaryBeth May Brown attended Greenwich Catholic School, as did her six siblings, and the May family has a long-standing tradition of volunteer service to and philanthropic support of GCS. The May Family Scholarship is awarded to a GCS family that has demonstrated a similar commitment.

Making History: Celebrating the New Upper School On Tuesday, October 11th, the fall sun was shining brightly upon the Greenwich Catholic School community as they gathered together at the ribbon cutting ceremony for the newly expanded and renovated Upper School building. The event program included remarks and a blessing by Bishop Frank Caggiano.

Work on the Upper School, which houses grades 6, 7, and 8, began at the end of June. The construction scope included a completely renovated interior, the addition of two classrooms, a new roof, an energy efficient HVAC system, and ADA compliant restrooms. The $2.3 million project was made possible by gifts to the Imagine capital campaign, totaling almost $2 million.

Patrice Kopas, Principal, welcomed the ceremony attendees who, in addition to the school’s 400 students, included teachers, parents, alumni, Diocesan administrators, and local and state elected officials. Mrs. Kopas addressed the students by saying, “This building is a gift to you. We love you and want you to be the best students you can be.”

In his remarks, Imagine Campaign Co-Chair Mr. Brian Condon, P’20 thanked donors and campaign leaders, and he applauded the efforts of Mr. Mario Gaztambide, P’24, ’25 for his oversight of the construction progress. He went on to praise lead donor and alum, Mr. Jim Dougherty, ’72, P’01, explaining, “The Doughertys have a history of always being involved in this school. I am humbled by their generosity and the example they have set for all of us to give back to GCS.” Mr. Condon concluded by sharing his own motivation for supporting the school by stating, “My wife Susan and I have made GCS a priority in our lives. We both believe that nothing is more important than the advancement of Catholic education.”

Mr. Condon’s Co-Chair, Dr. Andrew Sama, P’09, ’12, ’16, ’18, ‘21, implored fellow school families to support the school’s philanthropic efforts. “This building is living proof of what we can accomplish together. I challenge every GCS family who, like my own, has been graced by all that this school offers our children, to make a gift to the campaign,” Dr. Sama said.

After expressing his gratitude to the Imagine cabinet members and donors for bringing the Upper School project to fruition, Bishop Caggiano stated, “This is a totally unique and historic day in the life of Greenwich Catholic School. Today will change the future of this school and let everyone know that GCS is here to stay forever.”

As he stood on the front steps of the remodeled building, Bishop Caggiano went on to draw parallels between the significance of the campaign’s name, Imagine, and the road ahead for GCS students.

“This is what we are doing here today: we are imagining what your future is going to be like,” he explained. “Because of your Catholic education, you are going to unlock your future. Every single one of you has a great destiny ahead.” Bishop Caggiano then proceeded to bless the building.

The ceremony closed with the actual ribbon cutting, while students cheered. When asked what she thought about the ceremony, a 2nd grader reflected, “I’m just glad the bishop brought such big scissors, otherwise it would have taken a really long time to cut that huge ribbon.”

BACK-TO-BASICS BENEFIT There was magic in the air on the evening of January 20, 2017 as more than 200 people gathered to celebrate Greenwich Catholic School at the first Back-to-Basics Benefit. The event, which featured a wine tasting, silent and live auctions, and grade challenges, was a huge success and raised over $100,000!

THE HOME SCHOOL ASSOCIATION It has been a very exciting year serving as Co-Presidents of the Home School Association (HSA) for Greenwich Catholic School. Together, our families have enjoyed almost 20 years at GCS, and we both know that choosing Greenwich Catholic School for our children has been one of the best decisions we’ve ever made. Each and every year, the teachers, administration and community at large play a pivotal role in the growth and development of our children. For that reason, we are grateful to serve GCS in our role within the Home School Association.

The “3 C’s,” or goals, of the HSA encompass three important areas: enhance communication, contribute to the classroom and support the community. With the support from our board, as well as the faculty and staff at GCS, all of these areas have had a very strong year indeed.

While all schools are measured by tangible statistics, it is the intangible, special and exceptional community at GCS that makes it the “home away from home” that most can only hope for in their child’s school. The spiritual foundation at GCS is complemented by excellent teachers, rigorous academics, impressive grounds, and a caring and nurturing environment that starts at the top and permeates every classroom. This foundation, coupled with the parent volunteers who spend endless hours in the classroom, school at large and at our many family events, all contribute to the strength and success of GCS.

We are proud to report that through the efforts of many, the HSA donated $50,000 back to the school during 2016-2017.

These funds helped support new security measures around the campus, and provided funding for several GCS faculty members to attend the 2016 National Catholic Education Association Annual Conference in St. Louis. In addition, we’ve continued to provide multiple curriculum enrichment programs throughout the year for the student body, as well as workshops on a variety of topics for parents. And as always, we’ve sponsored numerous social and spiritual events and activities for all GCS students and families to enjoy.

In closing, we look forward to the second year of our term with great confidence in our school, and in the wonderful group of dedicated volunteers who are always ready to step up for GCS. We invite and encourage all GCS families to participate in any way that they can, whether it be contributions to the Annual Fund, participation in our many community events, or volunteering in whatever capacity makes sense for their family. Each and every effort makes a difference for our children.

THANK YOU TO OUR HSA COMMITTEE CHAIRS APPLE PROGRAM Co-Chairs: Nina Balestriere, Diane Mannello

The Apple Program provides teachers with donated gifts throughout the school year.

On a monthly basis, this committee, with the help of volunteers, puts together gift baskets which are handed out through a lottery among the teachers. In addition, this committee provides goodies for our teachers during Teacher Appreciation Week.

BEAUTIFICATION Co-Chairs: Trip Curtis, Brenda Felletter

This committee, with the help of volunteers, helps to enhance the beauty of our school year round starting with the first day of school. The Beautification Committee decorates the front entrance to the school with a back-to-school theme welcoming our new and returning students and families.

Over the course of the school year, they will continue to create a warm and welcoming environment with seasonal and holiday decorations.

BOOKFAIR Co-Chairs: Niamh Cronin, Zaira Mahon, Marcela Maldonado, Ross Ilardi, Tabatha Santanna, Joanne Pacewicz, Pilar Quartarolo

The Book Fair Committee runs 2 book fairs throughout the year, in the fall and the spring. With the help of Scholastic Books, and other sources, the committee offers age appropriate, best-selling books as well as puts together teacher wish lists and required reading lists. The Book Fair is open for 4 days to the entire GCS community.

BOX TOPS FOR EDUCATION Chairperson: Maria Elena Gaztambide

The Box Tops for Education committee supports HSA fundraising by promoting the “Box Tops for Education” program throughout GCS. All GCS families are encouraged to clip Box Top coupons from various products they use in their homes. The chairperson will achieve additional benefits by actively promoting other components of the Box Tops program, including the Box Tops Marketplace, shopping online through

their website at vendors such as Oriental Trading, Lands End, etc. Shopping via the Box Top Marketplace helps GCS earn a designated percentage of the total purchase amount.

COMMUNITY OUTREACH Co-Chairs: Mike Ballengee, Judy Marzen

This committee organizes charitable drives to support various organizations in our community and communicates community service opportunities for our Upper School students. Charitable drives include the Inspirica Women's Shelter, St. Raphael's School, Nathaniel Witherell Nursing Home and the United States Military Troops deployed in various locations.

CULTURAL Co-Chairs: Carolyn WoodruffMirando, Colette Lesperance, Michelle Hopson

This committee works with the administration and plans enrichment programs for the students of GCS. Enrichment programs are designed for each grade level as well as the entire student body and are geared toward promoting the students' awareness of different cultures, their own health and safety, kindness and understanding among themselves, arts and sciences, and nature.

LIBRARY Co-Chairs: Kristin Galvin, Zaira Mahon

The committee organizes both the library volunteer schedule for the library classes and the general volunteers for the Librarian.

These volunteers assist the Librarian in stacking and examining books. When needed, they go online to find replacement books. They also assist with special projects, curriculum support, help teachers with research, support children during class time, and check books in and out.

MARKETING Chairperson: Pilar Quartarolo

The Marketing Commitee provides creative and technical/graphic arts expertise to compose materials that promote HSA events and initiatives.

This committee arranges workshops on timely parenting and family issues (internet safety, health and wellness, etc.) for parents and students.

PIZZA LUNCH Co-Chairs: Kim Higgs, Meghan Novack

This committee organizes pizza hot lunch service that the students enjoy on Wednesdays throughout the school year.

Committee chairs are responsible for distributing and keeping track of student signup sheets, ordering pizza and ice cream for Wednesday’s Pizza Days and organizing volunteers to help with the distribution and cleanup.

e-PREVIEWS Chair: Michelle Hopson

This committee puts together and publishes a weekly HSA newsletter (e-Previews) to keep all families informed of upcoming school events and programs.

ROOM PARENT COORDINATORS Co-Chairs: Jennifer LaPietra (LA - 1st Grade), Nina Balestriere (2nd - 5th Grade), Joanne Cavaliere (6th - 8th Grade)

Coordinators are required to have serve as a room parent for at least one year. Each chairperson helps to communicate between the HSA, administration and class room parents throughout the year. Duties include providing support to class room parents, distributing e-mails to room parents at the request of the administration, attending monthly HSA meetings, and helping to recruit volunteers for various school and HSA events as needed.

FAMILY PRAYER NIGHT Co-Chairs: Katy Gonnelli, Trish McMullin

This committee coordinates three family prayer nights, usually in October, January and May, encouraging spiritual growth and fellowship for all families of GCS.

SPIRIT WEAR Chair: Meghan Novack

The Spirit Wear Committee offers merchandise for purchase with Greenwich Catholic School name or logo. Items vary from year-to-year and timing/availability will be announced.

UNIFORM EXCHANGE/ LOST AND FOUND Chair: Len Plantemoli

This committee coordinates the collection of gently used GCS uniform clothing throughout the year. Uniform Exchange is maintained in the designated closets in the cafeteria and parents are encouraged to drop off gently used outgrown items or to help themselves to items they may be in need of. In addition, this committee manages the collection of the Lost & Found items throughout the year, contacting, where possible, the rightful owner for return. During teacher conference days, items are often set out in the lunchroom.

Unclaimed items at the end of the school year are usually donated to charity.

WELCOME COMMITTEE Chair: Jennifer LaPietra

This committee, with the help of volunteers, welcomes new families to GCS. "Buddies" are assigned to new families over the summer months to assist with any questions and to help make new families and students feel welcome to our community.

Additionally, the Welcome Committee hosts a New Parent Cocktail Party on the first Thursday after Labor Day. Invitees are the parents of new students, the HSA Board, the Advisory Board and the Administration.

DIRECTORY Chair: Pilar Quartarolo

This committee is responsible for collecting faculty, parent and student information, formatting, editing, and publication of the annual School Directory. In addition, this committee creates online event and volunteer sign-ups, and monitors the online school store, which allows for the purchase of various entities including, but not limited to, Pizza Lunch, Spirit Wear, and HSA Event Tickets.

ANGEL DAY Co Chairs: Gina Ilardi, Micaela McCann, Wendi Smith

The Chairpersons plan and coordinate a day when GCS families can invite Angels in the lives of their students (grandparents, aunts, uncles, special friends) to share part of the school day with them. The Chairs main responsibilities include: meeting with the appropriate faculty and staff to plan the day, creating invitations, tracking responses, organizing Mass for the students and Angels, arranging a sit down breakfast for the Angels, purchasing ornaments for the Angels, organizing many volunteers who help make the day possible and coordinating classroom visits. The time commitment of this Committee runs from October through the beginning of December with an increased amount of time spent in the days before the event.

BACK TO SCHOOL PICNIC Chair: Trip Curtis

The Chair organizes a picnic in September for all GCS families to kick off the school year. Bouncy houses, field games, hot dogs, chips, cotton candy, snow-cones, and lemonade. No cost to attend. 2016 picnic included the band RED.

BREAKFAST WITH SANTA Co-Chairs: Liz Dunleavy, Maureen Parker

The chair is responsible for organizing a breakfast for the lower school to meet Santa during the holiday season. Held in the Convent, Santa comes and brings a small gift for each child. Grades LA – 1st, plus siblings, are invited. There is a cost for tickets, but this is not a fundraiser.

FAMILY FUN NIGHT Chair: Bonnie Tuite

The chair plans and organizes a Family Fun Night event for all the families at GCS to take place during the second half of the school year. Traditionally, this night involves the coordination of up to 500 participants for the playing of Bingo with prizes and raffles for all. Cost for tickets includes pizza.

This is a fundraiser.

The chair, along with the Athletic Director, organizes field activities and lunch for grades K-7 in June.

HALLOWEEN PARTY Co-Chairs: Tricia Caputo, Diane Mannello

This Committee organizes a Fall Festival/ Halloween Party in the gym for the students of GCS. Families are asked to pay $20 per family to participate. Chairs must coordinate fun, seasonal activities, pizza, music, and games for an afternoon of fun.

The committee is responsible for invitations, refreshments, decorations, and set up for the first official HSA parent meeting of the school year.

NEW PARENT COCKTAIL PARTY Chair: Welcome Committee Chair, Jennifer LaPietra

The Welcome Committee, along with the HSA, hosts a cocktail event the 2nd week of school, on Thursday evening. It is held in the Convent, and all new families are invited, as well as the Advisory Board, teachers & faculty.

2016-2017 SCHOLARSHIPS & AWARDS The Principal’s Award

This award is given to students who have demonstrated outstanding effort, citizenship, academics, leadership, Christian deportment and school spirit.

The recipients were Joshua DeSouza & Gianna Saviano

The Bergeron Award

This award is presented to a seventh grade female athlete who demonstrates the qualities of sportsmanship and teamwork while displaying both outstanding athletic and academic ability. It is made possible by the Bergeron Family and named in honor of Betsy Bergeron who graduated from Greenwich Catholic and St. Mary’s High School.

She was an outstanding athlete and went on to play at Duke University.

Traditionally this award is presented to a seventh grade girl who has demonstrated outstanding ability in Sportsmanship and Academic Achievement.

The Stanley Bocek Sportsmanship Award

This award was established in 2008 in honor of Stan Bocek, a teacher and dedicated coach who began the athletic program at GCS. This award is presented each year to a seventh grade boy who exhibits the qualities of good sportsmanship, citizenship and who participates on more than one inter-scholastic sports team.

Johanna Dakan Scholarship

The recipients of this scholarship are students who are in good academic standing and demonstrate continued academic improvement through perseverance and an enthusiasm for learning through reading. The recipients show respect for authority, a great sensitivity to others’ needs and demonstrate the virtues of generosity, honesty and humility revealed in a healthy spiritual life. This $250 award is given to one student in Grades 1-4 and one student in Grades 5-8.

The Kevin J. Feighery Scholarship

This $500 scholarship is given to a male student who will be attending a Catholic high school and who exemplifies the Christian values taught at GCS. The recipient was Dylan Lombardo

Richard Salvatore Scholarship

This scholarship began by St. Mary’s High School Alumni Association and is continued today by GCS in honor of a much-loved and longtime GCS employee in the amount of $500. The scholarship is given to a current GCS student.

The May Family Scholarship

Established in 1980 by the former principal, it is presented to a student on the varsity basketball team who possesses exceptional basketball skills, achieves high academic standards and displays teamwork and good citizenship.

This scholarship, in the amount of $1,000 towards tuition, was established in 1994 by Mr. & Mrs. Matthew Brown. MaryBeth May Brown attended Greenwich Catholic School as did her six siblings. The May family has a long tradition of volunteer service to GCS and a deep commitment to the continued growth and development of Catholic education. In the May family tradition, the family scholarship was established to recognize a Greenwich Catholic family who has demonstrated a similar commitment.

At the end of the 2016/2017 academic year, the HSA provided two scholarships to graduates attending Catholic High Schools in the amount of $1,500 each.

Ben Brown Memorial Scholarship

This $2,500 scholarship is given to an Upper School student attending GCS. It was established in 2007 in memory of Ben Brown, who graduated from GCS. It goes to a student who has a zest for life, talent for writing, loyalty to his or her faith, family and friends and a young person who “Follows what’s Right.”

This $4,000 scholarship is given to a student currently attending GCS. It was established in memory of Claire Smee who attended GCS and loved her friends and teachers.
