Thank you!

Thank you!
Dear Friends,
As leader of this school committed to girls’ education, I stand firm in GA’s mission to “develop girls and young women of exceptional character and achievement who demonstrate independence, resilience, courage, integrity, and compassion.” These are traits our country and the world need more than ever.
It is imperative that we continue to build those gifts in our students here at GA. We must encourage their dreams. We must support their failures. We must give them hope that they CAN and WILL change our world. Our girls and alumnae ARE leading and making change happen. Toward the building of character and leadership. That is our strength as a GA community.
We represent diverse backgrounds and our differences are a source of strength and inspiration. Embracing various perspectives allows us to grow and learn together, and this is one of the most valuable lessons we can impart to the GA girls. So, how do we cultivate this enriching experience? Two words come to mind: exploring and listening.
Exploration is our theme this year, and it has been invigorating to see the GA community welcome this mindset. The year kicked off full of possibilities, and each day your daughters rise to the challenge by earnestly engaging in the rigor of their academic pursuits, while also enjoying being part of an athletic team, club, or friend group. These are busy students who, with encouragement and support from you and their teachers, celebrate their accomplishments and become more resilient by working through challenges. Exploration is not just a word but a call to action for our entire community to embrace curiosity, venture beyond our comfort zones, and discover new horizons. At GA, we are dedicated to providing students with a rich and diverse education, and we seek to harness the power of exploration to enhance learning and teaching experiences through measured risk-taking and by providing enriching academic, artistic, and athletic opportunities. By fostering a combined spirit of exploration and listening, our students will be better equipped to navigate the world beyond school where paths aren’t always clearly mapped. As an institution, we aim to instill in our students a sense of civic
responsibility and the confidence to contribute their opinions and ideas meaningfully and respectfully, to be heard and to hear their peers so they, our future leaders, can model a community where everyone has a voice, where disagreement doesn’t equal judgment. Trusting one’s instincts, taking chances, learning from both mistakes and triumphs, and being resilient are imperative skills for success, and that’s my hope for every GA student and every member of our community.
Looking ahead, we are also thrilled to explore the possibilities for GA’s next exciting venture—the Glenville property, with the innovative minds at Sasaki Associates leading the planning to help us think creatively and courageously and to envision what the future of education can be. As we have done in the past, GA will forge a path that others will likely follow, so it is important to be mindful, innovative, and brave in our ideas. This mindset will lead to significant growth as we head into our historic bicentennial and beyond.
This year, by leaning into discovery and the challenges that come with it, GA girls will make profound and meaningful contributions that will make us all proud. Join me on this path of exploration and listening, and together we will foster a vibrant and dynamic environment where every GA student feels a sense of wonder, excitement, and accomplishment each day.
With gratitude,
During this, my final year as GA’s board chair, I look to the school’s impressive history and accomplishments to inform our path forward. As an alumna and a parent, my heart has always been with Greenwich Academy—the lifelong friendships and memories, triumphs on the fields, and successes in the classrooms. GA has done great things over generations, and by coming together to nurture a strong sense of community, we can continue to empower our girls and strengthen our school. As we stand on the brink of our bicentennial in 2027, we are not just looking back at the past 200 years, but also forward to an exciting future. It will be a time of celebration for all of our successes as a community, and for all of the possibilities ahead. We are stronger together, and with this in mind, we put the GA girls at the forefront.
Our accomplishments from last year were made possible by the hard work of our dedicated volunteers and parent leaders. A heartfelt thank you to the board of trustees for their commitment to maintaining the school’s financial stability and for their essential leadership in advancing GA, with our girls our top priority. I’m delighted to share that, thanks to the foresight and guidance of our trustee investment committee, GA’s endowment reached $139.4 million at fiscal year 2024 close. In other positive news, the 2023–2024 Annual Fund raised $3.5 million, with an impressive 98% participation rate from parents, highlighting our community’s dedication to GA’s success. Additionally, 35% of our alumnae contributed to the Annual Fund, significantly exceeding participation rates at comparable schools. Special thanks to our Annual Fund Co-Chairs Angela and James Ho P ’28, ’31, as well as Parent Giving Co-Chairs Beth and Tony Miranda P ’27, Alumnae Giving Chair Marianne Cholnoky Kay ’75, and Grandparent Giving Co-Chairs Linda and Tim O’Neill P ’17, GP ’37, ’38. Moreover, the Class of 2024 Fund achieved a historic milestone with 100% participation from
senior parents, thanks to Co-Chairs Nancy and Tim Armstrong P ’22, ’24 and their unwavering efforts to renovate, rejuvenate, and redesign the Upper School rooftop. I would also like to extend my gratitude to last year’s GAPA President, Erin Captain P ’29, ’31, ’33, ’36, whose leadership helped secure a $68,825 gift for guest speakers and campus signage. Lastly, a special shout-out to Spring Party Co-Chairs Erica Bens P ’28 and Kelly Thomas P ’31, ’32 for orchestrating a magical event that raised $126,000 to support site planning for the Glenville property. This community’s success and the accomplishments of its students are testament to the steadfast support of our families, alumnae, and friends. Thank you for allowing me to serve this remarkable institution that holds a special place in my heart as both an alumna and a proud parent. I look forward to witnessing the incredible strides GA will continue to make. Together, we will ensure that our school remains a beacon of excellence for generations to come.
With heartfelt appreciation,

Nicole has played an active role within the GA community, including as GAPA Community Chair, Annual Fund Committee member, Class Representative, Farewell to Fours lead, and LS Dance Committee member. She and her husband Chris are GA neighbors and have three GA daughters: Sydney (Group V) and twins Caroline and Natalie (Group III).
The 2023–2024 school year was all about new beginnings as we launched the next chapter of Greenwich Academy history with Margaret Hazlett as head of school. The GA parent community was very eager to get on campus to meet Margaret, and over the course of the year her visibility and accessibility were deeply appreciated.
The Greenwich Academy Parents Association (GAPA) remained focused on our mission “to enhance school activities and facilities through service and fundraising” throughout the year. We did this thanks to an amazing team of parent volunteers and a vibrant school community.
We kicked off the school year with a lively Annual Dinner and countless parent meetings and socials. Spirit Day saw record attendance and our girls enjoyed food trucks, bounce castles, arts and crafts, and lots of green and gold swag while cheering on our incredible athletes. All through the year, the Friday Afters team ran exciting programming for Lower School girls. The Holiday Boutique was reimagined as a one day event and held in Young Auditorium for the first time. The Clothing Nook launched a second location in the Lower School, ensuring that everyone has ready access to gently-used uniform items. The Faculty and Staff Appreciation arm of GAPA raised over $40,000 and used these funds to throw an amazing spring breakfast and to fund monthly gift card raffles for our beloved teachers and staff. Book Fair had something for everyone, including a very well attended kick off party with a magician, arts and crafts, bake sale, and even a reading from Margaret. GAPA once again put together a fantastic Charter Day celebration, and in keeping with the spirit of community, this year we eliminated bracelet sales for admission, making this an entirely free event for our students. Our Spring Party was a mind-blowing
celebration that raised $126,000 to support site planning for GA’s Glenville property.
Thanks to the hard work of GAPA volunteers and the support of the GA community, at the end of the year GAPA was able to gift $68,825 toward campus signage and to fund amazing speakers for parent programs, assemblies, wellness, and other opportunities. This will enable GAPA to bring world class talent to campus to educate and inspire—a gift that will keep on giving.
On a personal note, I was so grateful for the opportunity to take the reins of GAPA this past year. It was an honor to serve alongside such a talented and enthusiastic group of parents and our incredibly dedicated administration, faculty, and staff. I truly enjoyed working with Margaret Hazlett, and I know the school is in capable hands. This year’s president, Cristin deVeer, has a fantastic board lined up and will do an excellent job leading GAPA through the 2024–2025 school year!
Warmly,
Erin Captain

Greenwich Academy is fortunate to have the tremendous support of so many members of its community. Participation is paramount to the school’s success. Current Parent Annual Giving Participation
Annual Giving Participation
Each year independent schools, private colleges, and universities face a shortfall between tuition and the actual cost of educating a student. This deficit, referred to as “the gap,” is relieved partially by unrestricted gifts made to the Annual Fund. Tuition alone covers only 75% of the actual cost of a GA education; the remaining 25% is made up of endowment allocations, income from other revenue, and the Annual Fund. Each year, the Annual Fund contributes approximately 7% of the operating budget, or $4,471 per student, completing the GA experience for all our girls.
Annual giving is a yearly fundraising effort to support Greenwich Academy’s operating expenses. Gifts to the Annual Fund have a direct impact on all aspects of our program—the students, the faculty, and the academic, athletic, artistic, technological, and extracurricular life of the school. These unrestricted funds are central to a GA education and make it possible for GA to offer students and teachers the finest resources available.
Beyond helping GA meet its immediate financial needs, participation in the Annual Fund demonstrates one’s confidence and belief in a Greenwich Academy education. The strength of the Annual Fund is based on the school’s longstanding tradition of excellence. This legacy will continue with ongoing support from all members of the GA community.

As the Class of 2024 prepared to embark on their next exciting chapter and reflected on their journey, bringing mental health and mindfulness to the forefront of daily life at GA emerged as a prevailing priority for them and the entire school community. Thanks to the generosity of the parents of these remarkable graduates, the Class of 2024 Mindful & Sustainable Rooftop will leave their class’s thoughtful legacy for the next generation of GA students to enjoy. The renovated green space includes sustainable features that help regulate the Upper School building’s overall temperature, while the picturesque grass, plant life, and pergola with shaded seating area provide a tranquil respite from the hectic pace of the school day.
Alumnae participation achieved an outstanding 35% in annual and reunion giving. GA is proud to recognize the loyalty and commitment of those alumnae who have given consecutively for the past five and 10 or more years:
Academy Star ★★
10+ consecutive years of giving
Rising Star ★ 5+ consecutive years of giving
Many thanks to our Alumnae Leaders who are recognized for either making a leadership gift of $750 or more, or increasing their gift this year over last year.

JODY VISAGE SABBATICAL RECIPIENT
Dream big; whittle down. It’s something we say in my family. Nothing wrong with reaching for the stars with hopes and dreams then planning realistically for, well, reality.
After completing 30+ years as a member of the GA Physical Education and Athletic Department faculty and coaching decades of cross country, basketball, field hockey, lacrosse, and track and field, I was very generously awarded the opportunity to take a sabbatical during the spring semester of 2024. Wow. I remember the thrill of imagining what it would mean to spend months pursuing interests outside of my long, and rewarding, professional career while cultivating new insights to hopefully infuse into GA’s sports curriculum. Now, I envisioned, I would have the time to finally make my way to Scotland for the Highland Games! Experiencing centuries of history, heritage, community, and celebration would be a wonderful infusion of energy for me and I’d be exposed to ancient traditions of strength and stamina competition. Maybe introduce caber tossing to GA?
Dream big; whittle down. January 2024 arrives and it has become clear that my amazing 94-year-old mother is starting to slow down; she feels like she is running out of steam. Traveling out of the country isn’t feeling like the best move right now. So, I pivot. My mom reminds me that I used to talk about taking a drawing class “some day” and wouldn’t that be a dramatically new way to spend some time? Maybe slow yourself down a bit, listen for inspiration for the next decade of teaching and coaching? So, a bit reluctantly, I signed up for “Drawing is for Everyone” at the Rowayton Art Center. My initial experience felt like trying to fit a square peg into a round hole. I wasn’t cut out for the quietness of the art world. At the end of my first class, the drawing table I was using crashed to the floor, falling apart along with my attempt at creating a simple flower. This must be an omen I thought. Get out now. But there was something so different about being in this kind of class compared to my everyday experience of teaching and coaching. My days are usually filled with corralling students, shouting out directions over the chatter of kids, using balls, nets, sticks, and especially… movement. Always moving. Being in all sorts of weather. Anticipating the what-ifs of being out on a playing field. Lugging equipment. The aroma of the gym, the locker room, smelly sneakers, and dirty cleats. Blowing a whistle all day. And then coaching the older girls, planning workouts, execution of the workouts, managing personalities, building a team, and being their most enthusiastic cheerleader. How can drawing a flower possibly help me? Influence me? Encourage me? Is this really how I should be spending time on my sabbatical?
The goal for the entirety of the course was to complete a drawing of one flower. ONE. I’ll knock this out easy, I thought. I selected a rose as my subject, without much deliberating among the possible flowers. So for six Mondays, I sat at that crumbling table, slowly trying to bring this rose to life. And then something started to happen.
Meanwhile, as my mother chose to stay closer to home now, decided to stop driving and grew more hesitant to make future plans, we (my five siblings and I) planned her 95th birthday celebration in April. In between art classes I would make the 90 minute drive back home to Windsor to spend time with my mom and help with any caregiving needs, doing groceries, running errands, and telling her about drawing my rose.
Back at my drawing table, my rose and I continued to get acquainted. So many petals, layered and stuffed into a single sturdy stem. Why didn’t I choose a daisy? So easy! The focus necessary and the stillness required to draw was a new sensation. So very quiet for both my body and my mind. And, I was discovering such a welcome change. Precision, subtle elements of shading, perspective taking, how I held the pencil, the sharpness of the pencil, all were integral to the life of my rose. I made small, incremental progress each week. My mom moved slowly toward her desired end. We were able to celebrate her birthday on the beautiful coast of Maine, with mom breathing in the salt air she loved. Then, as congestive heart failure set in, our family team spirit that has kept us close and together from the beginning, coalesced around mom and her comfort. Much like the athletic teams I was taking a
break from, we managed to work through our descending grief through talking, strategizing, assigning tasks, and lots of laughing with our mother in the center of it all, reminding us of how grateful she was for us, and her long, healthy, incredible life.
I would have missed so much of learning how to live at the end of a life if I hadn’t been on sabbatical leave. To be present, with focus, with stillness, with quiet to listen and share and witness this kind of love was one of the most important blessings of my life.
Now did my rose somehow play a role in my ability to slow down, get centered, and remain present for my mom? I can only thank the forces in the universe that steered me away from the Scottish Highland Games and out of my comfort zone into that local drawing class, to that rose and provided me with the gift of time with my dear mother. Thank you, Greenwich Academy, the Board of Trustees, and Mary Quick and Peer Pedersen P ’06, ’09, ’10, ’13 for the sabbatical of a lifetime, and for helping me to understand that athletics and the arts are both necessary to live a full, simple, yet profound life. It’s really okay to dream big and whittle down!

Through the generosity of the Seidler family, this past July I traveled to Florence, Italy where I attended two, week-long workshops at Il Bisonte, a traditional printmaking studio and gallery located in the heart of the city.
Since graduating college, I have not had the opportunity to commit to a full-time studio practice. The goal for this trip was to fully immerse myself in my art-making in a location where the arts are integrated in day-to-day life. Florence is a place where the respect for artists and craftsmen is ingrained in their culture. Artists are out painting vistas for tourists, people are lined up down the Piazza della Signoria to visit the Uffizi, and every neighborhood church holds a treasure completed by an Italian master. In college, I lived in Tuscany for a semester, so returning to Florence felt like visiting an old friend. My days began with a mile walk along the Arno where I passed Ponte
Vecchio and enjoyed an espresso at my favorite neighborhood café before heading to the studio. Once in the studio, I worked alongside established and burgeoning artists from all over Italy and the world and got lost in the process of art-making. I practiced my Italian language skills daily and connected with people across culture and language to learn about their lives and bodies of work. I was in awe, humbled, and inspired by those around me. The experience pushed me out of my comfort zone and allowed me to deepen the investigation of my own artistic practice and elevated my art to new levels. In my body of work, I continue to return to portraiture for
its ability to portray the human experience. I am fascinated by family histories and love how portraiture is both an expression of the self but also one’s family heritage. Through various printmaking techniques, I manipulated photographs taken by my grandparents back in the 1970’s and brought new life to them. This exploration felt like a natural extension of my previous work while forcing me to see and interpret these images through a different lens. I really enjoyed experimenting with traditional printmaking techniques through a contemporary art lens. Printmakers are master hackers and can always find a workaround or better way to approach a creative challenge. These new techniques I learned have broadened my way of thinking about printmaking and I look forward to bringing what I learned into my art classroom at Greenwich Academy.
One of my biggest takeaways from my time in Florence was seeing how my teachers and other artists balanced the work of their day jobs while also staying disciplined about their own art practice. It was inspiring to talk to other artists and connect on the struggles of balancing it all. I also enjoyed how the print studio fostered such a collaborative and constructive environment for its artists. Everyone, no matter their skill level, was welcomed and supported in the space. This experience reinvigorated my personal art practice, challenged me in ways that I could have never imagined, and introduced me to artists working all over the world. I am so grateful to have been given the time and resources to explore Florence at a different chapter in my life, and I look forward to seeing where this experience will take my own work and teaching.

Greenwich Academy is a place where community, service, and leadership converge to shape strong, empowered women. This ethos is vividly embodied in the legacy of former trustee, parent, and grandparent, Margaret “Sally” Casey. Her life and dedication to GA were acknowledged at the Ruth West Campbell Society Tea in May, a gathering that recognizes individuals who have chosen to include Greenwich Academy in their estate plans. In this special tribute, her granddaughters Phoebe ’18 and Hannah ’16, daughter Ellen Casey Boyd ’90, and daughter-in-law Sarah Casey, P ’16 ’18 attended and were “pinned” with the Society’s honorary recognition pins in memory of Sally, who passed away in January 2023.
Sally was born and raised in Boston, MA, where she graduated from Winsor School and went on to Smith College, where she earned her degree in history and played field hockey. Following her college years, Sally relocated to New York City, where she worked with the American Field Service, and eventually met and married Rev. Craig W. Casey, an Episcopal priest from Memphis, TN. Sally and Craig settled in Greenwich where their daughters attended GA and son attended Brunswick. A renaissance woman at heart, Sally loved global travel,
attending theater performances, symphonies, lectures, and cheering on her grandchildren at their sporting events. However, her passion for giving back was paramount; she was deeply involved in her community, volunteering at Christ Church Greenwich, the Greenwich Library, Brunswick School, the Greenwich Garden Center, and the Greenwich Audubon Society. She served on the boards of Gateway School, the Brookridge Homeowners Association, and Greenwich Academy. Sally’s commitment and service to GA in particular spanned decades. She was recognized for her leadership in establishing the Sally Casey Award, which is presented each year to an Upper School student for exceptional community service. This award embodies Sally’s values and inspires students to participate in meaningful, altruistic experiences.
Sally’s children, Ellen Casey Boyd ’90, Alec Casey BWK ’84 P ’16, ’18, and Sarah Casey Forbes ’86, said this about her lasting gift and dedication to GA:
“Our mother Sally Casey loved being involved with the GA community. She was a proud parent, grandparent, volunteer, and board member. Nothing made her happier than attending the annual Ingathering assembly to watch the presentation of the Sally Casey Award given to an upper school student for outstanding community service. She was an ardent believer in the school’s mission of creating strong women who could be decisive, accomplished, and compassionate. Her choice to include GA in her planned giving brought her great joy knowing that her gift would contribute toward providing for future generations of GA girls and young women.”
Sally’s legacy will continue to flourish through her lasting gift to Greenwich Academy. The Ruth West Campbell Society stands as a testament to her belief in the power of education and community, ensuring that her spirit of service will live on in GA students.
Greenwich Academy is an independent college-preparatory day school for girls and young women that seeks to foster excellence. Its mission is to provide a challenging, comprehensive educational experience grounded in a rigorous liberal arts curriculum within an inclusive, diverse community. The school’s objective is to develop girls and young women of exceptional character and achievement who demonstrate independence, resilience, courage, integrity and compassion.
