Friday night football games signal the start of a new school
We in Dorchester School District Two feel that education should include not only strong academic rigor but opportunities for students to develop talents and leadership skills. The young people involved in these outstanding programs are taking full advantage of those opportunities. Many of these same students will be our community leaders of tomorrow.
Summerville High School offers students quality programs led by a staff of dedicated men and women with a common goal—to do what is best for students. The school's coaching staff and music department work hard to ensure that all students in their programs realize their full potential. We appreciate their commitment to the well-being of students and the development of their talents

Day year and the coming of fall. Members of the community join with students and school staff to cheer on their favorite teams in a wonderful display of school spirit and pride. For many years we have enjoyed watching our student athletes, team managers and trainers, musicians and cheerleaders excel in these activities that bring us all here this evening.

IanRaffertybeginshis22ndyearincoachingandhis 5thyearleadingtheGreenWaveFootballProgram. Raffertyisa1994graduateofSummervilleHigh SchoolwhereheplayedunderthelegendaryCoach JohnMcKissick.HewasanAll-Region,All-Low Country,andAll-Statefootballplayerasajuniorand senior.Raffertywasalsoselectedtoplayinthe ShrineBowlafterhisSeniorseason.CoachRafferty wasalsoastandoutwrestlerwhileatSHSandwasa memberofthe1992and1993statechampionship wrestlingteams.Afterhighschool,Raffertyattended NorthCarolinaStateUniversity.Duringhistimewith theWolfpack,Raffertywasathree-yearstarteron theoffensiveline,earningAll-ACChonorsanda selectionintheEast-WestAll-Stargamefollowing hisseniorseason.Raffertyplayedthreeseasonsin theNFLwiththeNewYorkJetsandtheTennessee Titans.
Afterhisplayingcareerwasover,Raffertymoved backtotheSummervilleareaandbeganhiscoaching careeratFortDorchesterHighSchool.Rafferty servedastheoffensivecoordinatorwiththePatriots, whilealsoheadinguptheschool’sstrengthand conditioningprogram.In2015,Raffertycoordinated theoffenseonthe15-0statechampionshipteam, whichscored63pointsinthetitlegameagainst Dorman.Inhis19yearsofcoaching,Raffertyhas coachednumerousplayerswhowentontoplay collegefootball,andseveralwhomadeittotheNFL.
CoachRaffertyhasaBachelor’sDegreein CommunicationfromNorthCarolinaState University,aMaster’sDegreeinTeachingPhysical EducationfromTheCitadel,andaMaster’sDegreein EducationalLeadershipfromtheAmericanCollege ofEducation.Heismarriedtohisbeautifulwife Carrie,andtheyhavethreechildren:Drew(25),Lilly (17),andReid(14).
OMAR NESBIT
CoachNesbitgraduatedfromTheCitadelin 2002withadegreeinBusiness Administration.WhileatTheCitadel,hewasa 4-yearstarterforthebulldogsearningAllSouthernConferencehonorsinboth academicsandathletics.OmarwasalsoanAllAmericanin2001.
CoachNesbitbeganhiscoachingcareeratFort DorchesterHighSchoolin2006.Hethenspent 9yearsastheoffensivelineandtightends coachatChowanUniversity,inMurfreesboro, NC.WhileatChowan,heservedastheteam’s academiccoordinatorandassistantstrength andconditioningcoach.Additionally,while there,CoachNesbitcoached7All-Conference offensivelinemen.CoachNesbitjoinedthe GreenWavecoachingstaffin2016. Omarismarriedtohiswife,Sarah,whoisa ScienceandCATEteacheratSHS.Together, theyhavea10-year-oldson,Lucasandtwins QuentinandEliare6yearsold.Omaristhe sonofCarolineandRonaldNesbitandhasone brother,Jamar,a1994graduateofSHSand SuperBowlChampionwiththeNewOrleans Saints.
JAmie Tyler
JamieTylerbeginshis7thyearastheoutside linebackerscoachfortheGreenWave.Heisa1995 graduateofWestFlorenceHighSchoolwherehe playeddefensiveendandlinebackerandwasvoteda teamcaptainduringhisseniorseason.Heplayed footballatPresbyterianCollegeandwasamember ofthe1998teamthatforced48turnoversin11 games,whichrankedthemfirstnationallyin turnovermargin(+2.27)Hereceivedadegreein secondaryeducationin2000.Aftergraduating,he beganhisteachingandcoachingcareeratManning HighSchoolwherehecoachedthedefensiveendsfor the2000AAALowerStateChampions.Aftertwo yearsatManning,CoachTylermovedtoNorth CharlestonandcoachedatFortDorchesterHigh School.In2012,hereturnedtoManningtocoach linebackersandserveasthedefensivecoordinator from2013-2015.
JamieismarriedtoLee,a1996graduateofSHSand asecondgradeteacheratDr.EugeneSires Elementary.Theyhavetwochildren,Thomas(18) whoisin12thgradeatSHSandEllison(16)whois inthe11thgradeatSHS.
Ahren Self
CoachAhrenSelfbeginshistenthyearasthe DefensiveCoordinatorfortheGreenWave.Priorto hisarrivalinSummerville,hespentnineyearsat ClarkeCentralHighSchoolinAthens,Ga.Duringhis stintatClarkeCentral,CoachSelfwastheHeadCoach forthreeyearsandspentsixseasonsasthe Gladiator’sDefensiveCoordinatorandAssociate HeadCoach.Inthattime,hehelpedTheGladiator’sto eightconsecutiveplayoffberths;twoRegion Championships,andaStateChampionship appearancein2009.CoachSelfbringswithhima wealthofexperiencebothinhighschoolandatthe collegiatelevel.PriortoarrivingatClarkeCentral, CoachSelf’smostrecentstopwasattheUniversityof TennesseeatChattanooga,wherehespent2years coachingthesecondaryandcoordinatingthepunt team.PreviouslyhecoachedatElonUniversity; wherehewastheSecondaryCoachandSpecial TeamsCoordinator;inaddition,hecoachedatThe Citadel,andatSyracuseUniversitywherehewas abletoworkwithAll-ProLinebackerKeithBullock fromtheTennesseeTitans.Hespenthisentirecareer coachingonthedefensivesideoftheball,coaching eitherdefensivebacksorlinebackers.
Asaplayer,CoachSelfplayedDefensiveBackforThe Citadelfrom1991–1994andgraduatedwitha degreeinBusinessAdministration.Therehewas named“TheMostOutstandingDefensiveBack” followinghisSeniorYear.In1992,Hewasselectedas theSouthernConferenceDefensivePlayerofthe Week,aswellas,SouthCarolinaDefensivePlayerof theWeek.CoachSelfwasalsoamemberoftheteam thatupsetDivisionI-AArkansasandwonthe SouthernConferenceChampionshipin1992.Coach SelfandhiswifeCarolinehave2children;Chadand Chelsea.

WhileatLRhewasadynamicAllAmerican widereceiverthatledhisteamtoa ConferenceChampionshipandendinghis 2018seasonwith51Rec,1,059ydsand12 TDs.PriortoLRhealsoattendedConcord UniversitywherehewasnamedtheMEC FreshmanPlayeroftheYear,DonHansenAll American,BSNAllRegion,wasnamedFirst TeamAllConferencewhileleadinghisteam toanotherConferenceChampionshipin 2014.TjSmithendedhiscollegecareerwith 179rec,3,281yds,34TDs.In2020hesigned withthe(CFL)EdmontonElksasaWR. CarloJimenezisgoingintohis6thyearwiththe GreenWavefootballprogram,withthisbeinghis 3rdseasonasVarsityRunningBacksandTight Endscoach.CoachJimenezisa2012graduateof PinewoodPreparatorySchoolandattended collegeatGardner-WebbUniversity,wherehe graduatedin2016withaBachelor’sofScience degreeinSport’sManagementand2018witha Master’sinBusinessAdministration.Whileat Gardner-Webb,CoachJimenezwasastudent coachworkingwiththedefensiveline.After graduating,CoachJimenezgotpromotedtoa graduateassistantcoachingpositionwherehe coachedTE’s/RB’sandwasvideocoordinator. TavSchwartingbeginshisfourthyearasthe cornerbackscoachfortheGreenWave. Schwartingisa2014graduateofBambergEhrhardtHighSchoolwhereheplayedfootball forCoachButchCrosby.SchwartingwasAll RegionandALLTimesandDemocratfootballhis senioryearatBamberg-Ehrdardt.Healso letteredinbasketballandtrackandfield.After graduation,SchwartingattendedPresbyterian CollegeandplayedfootballfortheBlueHosefor 2yearsbeforehehadtoendhisplayingcareer duetoandinjury.Schwartingthentransferredto theUniversityofSouthCarolinawherehe graduatedin2019withadegreeinSports Management.WhileatUSC,heservedasthe linebackercoachfor3yearsatGrayCollegiateon CoachAdamHolmes’staff.Schwartinghashis MastersofArtinTeachingPhysicalEducation fromTheCitadel.

AllenSmithstartshisthirdyearofcoachingas partoftheGreenWavecoachingstaff.He graduatedfromSummervilleHighSchoolin04’ whereheplayedfootballandsoccer.Duringhis timeasaplacekickeratSummervilleHighhe earnedAll-StateHonors,andwasratedasoneof thetop25kickersinthenationbytheRayGuy KickingAcademy.Hewentontoplayfootballat GeorgiaMilitaryCollegeandtheUniversityof Alabamabeforeearninghisdegreeatthe UniversityofSouthCarolinainbusiness management.

KentrilWhiteentershis19thseasonasamember oftheSummervilleHighSchoolGreenWave coachingstaff.Kentrilisa1998graduateof SummervilleHighSchool,whereheplayed footballandtrack.Upongraduatingfrom SummervilleHighSchool,Kentrilattended FloridaStateUniversity,wherehegraduatedwith aB.S.inCivilEngineering.WhileatFloridaState, Kentrilwasamemberofthe99’-00’National ChampionshipTeamandmultipleACC Championships.Inadditiontobeingamemberof theNationalChampionshipTeam,Kentrilwon theFreshmanAcademicAchievementAwardand Walk-onPlayeroftheYear.In2014,Kentrilwas inductedintotheSummervilleHighSchoolHallof Fame.KentrilisthesonofFloydandLorraine White,andhehasonedaughter,GabrielleNicole White.
Billy Penn
BillyPennisa1991graduateofSummerville HighSchoolwhereheletteredinfootballasa runningbackandlinebacker,andaStateRunnerupinwrestling.CoachPennismarriedtoLindsey HodgePenn(SHSClassof2000)andhasthree kidsDee,MorganandAva.CoachPennattended SCStateandCSU,playingfootballfortheBucs. PenngraduatedfromtheSCFireAcademyin 1994andservedhiscommunityfor27years. CoachPennhasbeeninductedtotheSummerville HallofFameandtheScottFirefighterHallFame (Lion’sDen)forhisachievementsinboth. Throughoutthetimeasafirefighterhewasa substituteteacherwhilecoachingfootballand wrestlingforTheGreenwave!Whilecoachinghe wontwoStateChampionshipsasaBTeam wrestlingcoachandwasapartofCoachJohn McKissick’scoachingstafffrom2004-2006. CoachPenncamebacktocoachingin2019and hasbeenrecentlynamedtheHeadCoachofthe SummervilleBTeamFootball.CoachPennisthe sonofWilliamPennSr.(LegendaryCoachforThe Greenwave1973-2003)andLessiePenn(Former AdministratorforDistrict21973-2017).

ScottLittle,SCAT,ATChasservedastheHead AthleticTrainerforSummervilleHighSchool since08’.ScottisaGreenWavealumniandwent ontoCharlestonSouthernUniversityearninghis BachelorofScienceinAthleticTraining.After graduationhespentthreeyearsastheHead AthleticTrainerforPinewoodPrepin SummervillebeforereturningtoSHS.Alongwith hisathletictrainingdutiesCoachLittleteaches thevariouslevelsofSportsMedicineoffered withintheschool’sHealthSciencecurriculum.

AshleyJacobsbeginsher8thseasonastheleader oftheSummervilleHighSchoolCheerleading Program.Lastseason,CoachJacobsledtheteam toanotherstateappearanceatthe5ASCHSL CheerleadingStateChampionships.CoachJacobs hasbeenawardedtheRegion8AAAAA-Coachof theYearandSummervilleHighSchool,Teacherof theYear.CoachJacobsisanativeofClinton,SC wheresheattendedPresbyterianCollege.She cheeredforfouryearsinhighschooland continuedhercheercareerthroughoutcollege. ShehastaughtMathematicsatSummervilleHigh Schoolforthepastnineyears,currentlyserving astheMathDepartmentChair,andhasenjoyed watchingherstudentsgrowintolifelonglearners. Similartohowsheisintheclassroom,Coach Jacobsinstillsastrongdesirewithinher cheerleadersforthemtoworkhardanddevote theirtimeandenergytobecomingthebestteam theycanbe.CoachJacobsisexcitedtoleadthis year ’steamtosuccess.
