normal enough. They don’t smell bad, or kick puppies, and most days they’re pretty likeable. But once a year, they become like a piece of mistletoe in our sides. That time of year rolls around somewhere between Black Friday and the day before Christmas. These people are your friends and family that are, let’s say, difficult to find just the right Christmas gift for each year. Well, good news. This year, we’ve done the work for you. We’ve scoured the shelves of local businesses and found 50 gifts, each less than $50, that would make even the Grinch smile. Not personal enough for you? Not a problem. We also have a few do-it-yourself gifts included that won’t break the bank and will allow you to show off your creative side. If you’re like me, buying the gift is just half the battle. Once you’ve done that, you have to wrestle with wrapping paper and tape and try and make the gift look presentable. Easier said than done for some of us. My wrapping jobs usually end up looking like they were kicked down a flight of stairs. If you’re right there with me, I have more good news for you. The Pineapple’s Katrina Scofield, who wrapped the beautiful packages on the cover of this issue, has offered a few tips to make your wrapping job stand out this Christmas. So, relax. Kick back in a comfortable chair, and enjoy some caramel apple cider. You can find the recipe for that in this issue as well. Merry Christmas.

Wrapping up

Christmas

Y

ou battled the crowds and found the perfect gift. Now, it’s time to place it under the tree. But you can’t just leave it in the shopping bag. So how do you make that perfect gift stand out until that special someone unwraps it on Christmas Day? The Pineapple’s Katrina Scofield offers these tips for perfectly wrapping the perfect gift. Make sure you have enough workspace, flat work surface, scissors, tape, tissue paper and gift tags. Remove price tag from the gift. Place the box along the length of the wrapping paper, and unroll enough paper to wrap it around the box, leaving a 2-inch overlap. Make sure there is enough wrapping paper at each end of the box to come to the ends completely when folded over them. If you don’t like wrapping boxes, you can always bag the gift with tissue paper. Get creative. Wrap your gift in pretty fabric, patterned tissue, kraft paper, cellophane, etc. Have fun with ribbon. If you can tie a shoelace, you can tie a bow. Wired ribbon works best. A generous bow makes basic wrapping look luxurious…and it could also hide an imperfection or mistake. The more you wrap, the easier it gets. And that’s a wrap. camellia magazine | 21

Les Miserables highlights releases BY MICHAEL NIMMER

T

he time has changed, the weather is colder and many of the warm weather outdoor activities that we enjoy in the South are long gone. With fewer entertainment choices, movies move to the forefront as a great source of entertainment. More movies are released to DVD/Blu-ray this time of the year and theatrical releases are plentiful with films that appeal to a wide range of audiences. For our winter movie review, we have chosen three entries. For December, we have Les Miserables followed by The Last Stand and Safe Haven.

LES MISERABLES - DEC. 25 It’s hard to get through high school literature classes without reading Les Miserables. The 1862 novel by Victor Hugo is considered to be one of the greatest novels of all time and is often mandatory reading in both high school and college classes. It shouldn’t be a surprise that a novel of this stature has been adapted into countless movies, radio broadcasts, animated stories and screenplays over the last 150 years. Because of its history, it should be no surprise that Les Miserables has been adapted as a musical for the big screen. Set for a Christmas Day release, the film features a cast with some of the biggest stars in Hollywood including Hugh Jackman, Russell Crowe, Anne Hathaway, Amanda Seyfried, Helena Bonham Carter and many others. Unlike musical films of the past, Les Miserables showcases a cast that sings live during filming instead of lip syncing to prerecorded scores. The result is a movie that delivers the feel of a stage musical. Les Miserables features Jean Valjean, a released convict that attempts to regain a normal life after 19 years of prison. Searching for redemption, the story follows Valjean and others as they struggle life in France leading up to and during the 1832 June Rebellion. Early screenings have praised the movie and have quickly established Les Miserables as an early favorite for Oscar nominations for this year.

THE LAST STAND – JAN. 18

SAFE HAVEN – FEB. 14 Our last movie is Safe Haven. With a release on Valentine’s Day and based on the novel by Nicolas Sparks, Safe Haven is a love story sure to please Sparks’ fans. Nicolas has become one of the most successful writers of the last 20 years with sixteen books on The New York Times Bestseller list with eight scripts that have been adapted to film. His style and formula of love story has cemented him as both a bestseller and a favorite of Hollywood. Safe Haven stars Julianne Hough and Josh Duhamel. The movie features a young woman named Katie that is running from trouble and her past. To escape, she finds a sleepy North Carolina town perfect to disappear only to find a widower named Alex played by Duhamel. As she falls in love, she realizes her past will certainly come back to find her. Safe Haven is the perfect Valentine’s Day movie for couples.

Next up is an action movie that features the return of one of the greatest action heroes of the last 30 years. After his service as governor of California, Arnold Schwarzenegger returns to theaters as Ray Owens, sheriff of a quiet border town. Sherriff Owens is a former LAPD officer forced to leave Los Angeles after a botched operation that left his partner crippled. When a drug kingpin escapes an FBI prisoner convoy, he and his gang head for the Mexican border to escape U. S. law enforcement. Their escape plan has them traveling through Sommerton Junction and Sherriff Owens’ poorly prepared staff. Reluctant at first, Sherriff Owens realizes the safety of the town and his officers is his duty and leads to a face-off with the drug kingpin and his gang.

Delicious DIY Gifts

Chocolate Chip Oatmeal Quick Bread

Cranberry Hootycreeks

Ingredients: 2 cups all-purpose flour, 1 cup rolled oats, 1/2 cup granulated sugar, 1/2 cup brown sugar, 2 teaspoons baking powder, 1 teaspoon baking soda, 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon, 1/2 teaspoon salt, 1/2 cup chopped walnuts, and 1/2 cup miniature chocolate chips.

Ingredients: 1/2 cup + two tablespoons flour, 1/2 cup rolled oats, 1/2 cup all-purpose flour, 1/2 teaspoon baking soda, 1/2 teaspoon salt, 1/3 cup packed brown sugar, 1/3 cup white sugar, 1/2 cup dried cranberries, 1/2 cup white chocolate chips, 1/2 cup chopped walnuts

1. In a large bowl, mix dry contents (ingredients packed in jar). In a small bowl, beat 1 1/2 cups buttermilk, 2 large eggs, and 1/4 cup melted butter.

1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease a cookie sheet or line with parchment paper.

2. Stir wet mixture into dry ingredients just until evenly moistened (batter will be lumpy). 3. Scrape into a buttered and floured 9x5-inch loaf pan (with a 9-cup capacity), and bake in a 350째 oven until a wooden skewer inserted in the center comes out clean, about 50 minutes. 24 | camellia magazine

2. In a medium bowl, beat together 1/2 cup softened butter, 1 egg and 1 teaspoon of vanilla until fluffy. Add the entire jar of ingredients, and mix together by hand until well blended. Drop by heaping spoonfuls onto the prepared baking sheets. 3. Bake for 8 to 10 minutes, or until edges start to brown. Cool on baking sheets, or remove to cool on wire racks.

Whether you’re on a strict budget, have a large family and many friends, or simply enjoy creating meaningful Christmas gifts, these delicious do-it-yourself gifts are sure to please. Simply find a jar, fill it with the ingredients and wrap it up with a bow. It’s that easy.

Baked Apple Spice

S’mores

Ingredients: 3/4 cup of white sugar, 3/4 cup of brown sugar, 1/2 cup of flour, 1 teaspoon of cinnamon

Ingredients: Graham crackers, marshmallows, chocolate 1. There is no “right” way to make a S’more.

1. Cut 8-10 apples and place in buttered dish. 2. In a pan on the stovetop, mix spices with 2 teaspoons of butter and 1 up of water. 3. Boil, simmer until thick and pour over apples. 4. Bake at 350 degrees for 35 minutes.

2. Take one large graham cracker and break it in half (one for top cracker and one for bottom cracker). 3. Break the chocolate bar into smaller pieces. Cover one of the graham cracker halves with chocolate pieces. 4. Put a marshmallow on the stick and hold it over the fire until roasted. Take your toasted marshmallow (still on the stick), and lay it on the side of the graham cracker with the chocolate. Now take the other half of the graham cracker and cover the hot marshmallow, pressing down firmly enough to pull out the stick. Let it sit for a few seconds. The heat will somewhat melt the chocolate. camellia magazine | 25

‘Sitting in a box away from the world’ Dave Matthews Band delivers mix of old, new styles on album BY MICHAEL RODGERS

A

fter three years of touring and studio work, the Dave Matthews Band recently released “Away from the World,” which marks a return to the familiar DMB sound. Similarities to 2009’s “Big Whiskey & the GrooGrux King” can be heard throughout the album, but there are also influences from the Dave Matthews Band of the late 1990s. The album also marks the return of producer Steve Lillywhite, who was an influence on the group over a decade ago, but who hasn’t worked with Matthews since 1998. The band’s sound has slowly changed as performing members of the group have also changed in recent years. Following the death of saxophonist LeRoi Moore in 2008, Jeff Coffin has taken over that position and fills it admirably. Longtime collaborator Tim Reynolds is a presence on “Away from the World,” adding a number of electric guitar solos. Trumpeter Rashawn Ross has been touring with the band since 2006 and he makes his second appearance on a studio album. The album has something for fans of DMB, but the question is how accessible it is to new fans. “Belly Belly Nice” is a strong second track, featuring funk-inspired horn riffs from Ross and Coffin. Drummer Carter Beauford and bassist Stefan Lessard lay down a solid background groove and work to make this high-energy track one of the most memorable on the album. “Mercy” is the first single released from “Away from the World,” and Matthews uses it to reflect on the state of the world’s affairs.

The song itself is similar to the band’s hit “Crash Into Me,” and features syncopated chord changes and slow build to a climax. The next track, “Gaucho,” is reminiscent of the band’s earlier song “Warehouse” with its mixed time signatures and intro guitar riff. One of Matthews’s strengths as a vocalist is his emotional range — he can be soft and gentle with a falsetto, nearly yelling into the microphone or anywhere in between. In much of the second half of the album we get to see the softer side of Matthews, which is highlighted by “Belly Full.” Even though it’s the shortest song on the album at a minute and 43 seconds, it’s one of the most effective: an earnest love song that gets right to the point. The same can’t be said for “Snow

Outside.” DMB is known for going off on extended “jams” during live performances, and several tracks have incorporated natural segues to allow for them to be expanded live. The last half of “Snow Outside” is like a studio jam session, only it languishes without a keynote solo to keep your attention. “Drunken Soldier” also features an extended ending that is notable for its musical reference to Pink Floyd’s “Dark Side of the Moon.” The album is a solid effort and looks to provide a good basis for where the Dave Matthews Band truly shines: live performances. Overall, there are strong tracks to keep the attention of listeners, but the true appeal of “Away from the World” may lie with established fans for its return to the band’s classic sound.
