CHARLESSAMMUT

Mr Charles Sammut is the Founder and one of the Directors at Greens Supermarket. His entrepreneurial journey started in the 1980s when he started selling fruit and vegetables from his van in the Swieqi and St Julian’s area. In the late 80’s he ventured into turning his business into a physical store on the corner of Triq ta L’Ibragg. As business was flourishing, Charles decided to expand the store in the late ’90s and moved his business into the terraced house offering new fresh counter items as well as condiments and household items. This store is the store that many of the locals know Greens to be for a long number of years.

From the early stages of his career, Charles' goal was to run a family-owned business and therefore kept his three sons highly involved in operations of the business - one can say that they grew into the business. His sons were eventually promoted to a Director level and now play very pivotal roles within the company. Greens has since moved to even larger premises of 4,000 sq. meters, just a few minutes away from its original location. in 2018 the second outlet in Gozo has opened inside The Duke shopping mall. A third outlet is also in the pipeline for the year 2021.

The business today is run by a second-generation family company. Charles’ role has since changed to become more strategic however maintains an operational role since he is the Lead Project Manager when opening new premises and oversees the maintenance of all buildings.

Charles also holds the title of being the Club President for the ‘Team Greens’ cycling club which he actively participates in as well.

MARTINSAMMUT

Mr Martin Sammut is the eldest of the three sons, he has worked for the family business for over thirty years, where he spent more than a decade operating the Deli Counter. The Deli was one of the first fresh item counters to introduced within the operations of Greens Supermarket and is a staple and integral.

He has since taken over the role of supervising the Loading Bay, a role that requires the coordination of people as well as high volumes of deliveries within the premises within tight time frames. This area receives order from local and international suppliers, including the volume which is dedicated to the Gozo outlet. His position also requires a level of efficiency as well as integrating the Health and safety requirements for such operations.

Martin supports various philanthropic activities and has participated in many charity travels in Africa and The Philippines for volunteer vacations.

Joseph Sammut is continuously on the lookout for new concepts especially in design with his immaculate eye for detail, which is visible in the high quality finish within the supermarkets.

MATTHEWSAMMUT

Mr Matthew Sammut is the youngest of the siblings. His career within the family business was kickstarted from a young age, as has always involved in the fruit and vegetable side of the business. As the business was thriving, there was a niche market that Greens Supermarket had managed to find within this industry.

Matthew explored this niche and shifted a part of the business to a B2B type of consumer. This successful strategic pivot transformed into a startup business that now operates from a factory in Burmarrad, known as Fresh to Go Foods Ltd. Fresh to Go Foods is a sister company to Greens and boasts a large and very well-curated list of clients, some of which have been loyal customers of this business for several years. This new venture has introduced many innovation opportunities for the company, innovations that are continuously setting the bar for a high standard of quality within the industry.

The factory has expanded its operation to cater for different customers who wish to have their product packaging in their branding, who then handle the distribution of their products throughout the Maltese islands through their distribution channels.

Matthew’s deep knowledge of the subject as well as his skills in managing a business has proven to be a successful combination. While Matthew is dedicating his time entirely to the Fresh to Go business, he is a Director at Greens Supermarket, to continue to contribute to the success of the fruit and vegetable department of the supermarket.
