How much competition the new Ohio casino will present to the Rivers remains to be seen, but it will provide another alternative to gamblers north and west of Pittsburgh and could possibly cut into revenues for the Rivers. Then too, many Ohio gamblers from areas near the new Youngstown casino will now have a much closer option, particularly those gamblers who are slot players only. After five years the Rivers Casino in Pittsburgh has still yet to reach the original slots revenue projections. The advent of table games has helped them inch closer to their original revenue goal, but that has come with higher operating costs. In the last five years new casinos have debuted in neighboring states, as well as in western Pennsylvania, with at least one more hoping to open soon as an investment group is seeking authorization for a casino in Lawrence County. Media reports note how the Rivers has lived up to its community responsibility by providing funds for the hockey arena, paying their city and county host fees, and other community obligations. Keep in mind that these obligations were part of the deal for winning the Pittsburgh license in the first place and not just a benevolent gesture. On the other side of the coin, we do not have any data on the possible effects of problem gambling in the region, but the lack of news likely means the impact has not been very large, as of

The wisdom in this is the powerful truth that the part of us that sabotages ourselves like an inner devil really does show up in every detail in our life. HE VAST MAJORITY OF AMERICANS have never met Phil Weinberg. But that isn't because he's unimportant. It's because he is important. Like millions of Americans who toil largely in anonymity, participating daily in acts of courage and generosity, Phil has never been on CNN or Fox News; while he subscribes to The Wall Street Journal, he's

when they were both students at Hebrew College. They were best friend for six years. Then they realized what they had, and decided to get married. Their life was just beginning. Phil and Cheryl moved down to Tampa, Florida, where Phil taught at a Hebrew day school. His teaching career took him back to Boston, then to El Paso, Texas, and finally to California - he earned two more master's degrees in Texas and California. That's where he got out of Jewish education and into general education at the Los Angeles Unified School District. One of the roughest school districts in the country, LAUSD is perennially underperforming; its student population includes some of the most poverty-stricken areas in the United States. Phil jumped in with both feet. He taught special education, a self-contained class for children with specific learning disabilities -- but since LAUSD was badly administered, the district threw all sorts of children in Phil's classes, including autistic kids, developmental delays and emotionally disturbed children. Despite the challenges of LAUSD's administrative chaos, Phil sought to teach these kids, many of whom had parents who either couldn't or wouldn't raise their children. He taught the children, many of whom were immigrants to the country, patriotic songs, even though the district disapproved of such political incorrectness. He read them stories, making sure to play all the parts. He created specific goals and reports for each student. These kids were his kids. Phil and Cheryl were never able to conceive naturally, so they adopted a son. Their son was troubled, but they poured their heart and soul into raising him, just as they pour themselves into everything they did. Phil is my uncle -- not the brother of my mom or dad, but an adopted uncle. He is best friends with my father. And my father only has one rule for his friends: They must treat his children with kindness and generosity. Phil is the epitome of both. My father always said as we were growing up that surrounding your children with good people is one of the chief tasks of a parent. My parents certainly did that with Phil. He is an intellectual, a brilliant man, well-read, soft-spoken. He always provides information, but he is never strident, never arrogant. He is a friend, an advisor, and a mentor. And he is never happier than when I or my sisters tell him about what we're achieving and what battles we're fighting. I'm writing about Phil now because he's in a hospital in California. He's been battling cancer for several years; last week, he had a stroke. He's still fighting, and he'll still keep fighting. Because that's what we do as Americans. We may never get our 15 minutes of fame. We may never get our headshot on cable television. But we will make the country work, teach the next generation, and do so because we are a generous and forgiving people, willing to slog in the trenches without fame or fortune. That's my uncle Phil. DEAR EDITOR: This letter is in response to a letter published in the Aug. 18th edition by Ed Wirkowski of Millvale. While I applaud his concern for the violence and drug traffic that affects our streets daily, some of his information was inaccurate and down right false. On August 1st, 13 veteran police officers were sworn in by Mayor Paduto. These 13 men had just completed the City of Pittsburgh Police Training Academy. They are called veterans because each and everyone of these fine gentlemen has been a police officer for various other communities and boroughs for years. These 13 men are not rookies. They are well-trained policemen. They have faced danger and domestic calls for years. These 13 fine men have willingly choose to join the City of Pittsburgh police department. They are not security guards who arrive on the scene to take a report. They risk their lives each and everyday that they leave their homes to protect our streets. I know this for a fact. How? Because I was sitting in Council Chambers the day these men were sworn in. My youngest son was one of those 13 officers. He has been a police officer for four years before he accepted the duty of police officer for the City of Pittsburgh. Do I believe having these officers walk a beat in Zone 5 will make a difference? Yes, I do. These 13 men cannot eliminate the violence and killings

in Zone 5. It is up to the community to help. You know who is doing the killing. You know who is selling the drugs. Say something!! The police arrest them then no one testifies against them so they are released. It is a circle that continues again and again. MARK BAILEY’S ‘GIN JOINTS’ GOSSIPS ABOUT THE GREAT NAMES OF HOLLYWOOD: “To place in the limelight a great number of people who ordinarily would be chambermaids and chauffeurs, give them unlimited power and wealth, is bound to produce a lively and diverting result.” - Anita Loos, screenwriter This is just one of the many, many quotes included in Mark Bailey’s great little book titled “Of All the Gin Joints: Stumbling through Hollywood History.” This is to be published September 30 by Algonquin Books of Chapel Hill. If you’re looking for recipes for fabulous mixed drinks, as well as “Simple Syrup” - well, and good. Drink up! But what this book has, as it covers Hollywood’s Silent Era, Studio Era, the Postwar Era, the 1960s and “New Hollywood” is just about the briefest look at gossip at its most enjoyably lurid. It is a hoot to read this salacious “dish” about the great names of moviedom. I hope Mr. Bailey will follow up with what has happened since Hollywood itself all but deconstructed itself and now everybody in the entire world is making films to be seen on the Internet. I can cite here only snippets of gossip from the Silent Era and the Studio Era. We’ll get to the last half of this book later on. If you feel daunted by a collection of Bailey’s biographies of the celebrated, don’t! None

of his descriptions are long. Some, less than a page. You’ll have a real ball reading this. I did! Bailey knows how to underwrite brilliantly. And almost everyone mentioned is a big drinker. Here are some of Bailey’s choice, and fanciful, tidbits: John Barrymore embraced Freud early on and especially liked the psychological theory of Hamlet’s oedipal desire. The great actor came by this naturally. He had lost his virginity at age 15 to his stepmother. Marion Davies, the Hearst mistress, it seems, was the true inspiration for the sled Rosebud in the film “Citizen Kane.” But Rosebud was William Randolph Hearst’s nickname for Marion’s private parts. The day W.C. Fields died, his girlfriend sprayed the roof of their house with a hose so he could pass to the sound of his favorite thing - “falling rain.” The movie “Trader Horn” was one of the first actually shot in Africa. It filmed for seven months and the director’s footage was a disaster. There was no story and no screenplay. Finally, someone had the bright idea to look at the original book. It became MGM’s biggest movie of 1931 and made a million-dollar profit. “The Wedding March,” an Erich von Stroheim movie made in 1928 - featured nudity, real sex, genuine call girls and bestiality. It was the end of von Stroheim as a director. Jean Renoir and Billy Wilder brought him back

It will be her Broadway debut. Emma did a lot of stage work in her teens. But don’t worry about anybody replacing the dazzling Alan Cumming as the sinister/sexy emcee of the Kit Kat Club. He will continue at least through next March. “Cabaret” was also Michelle Williams’ Broadway bow. I guess the role of Sally Bowles is one of those perfect creations for a female. MY FAVORITE of the ALS ice bucket action so far is George W. Bush with Laura surprising him after he said it wasn’t dignified for a former president. And Andrea Mitchell of MSNBC being deluged by a man who just happens to be her husband, who was the former head of the Federal Reserve, Alan Greenspan. I’m sending in my $100. PRAISE for Herman “Hy” Goldman who turned 101 and won’t quit after 73 years working at the same job in East Hanover, New Jersey. He has toiled physically at Capitol Lighting since 1941. He lives nearby in Whippany and still drives himself to work. Thanks to The Record newspaper for this.

Long-Term Marriage Is Lonely, Lacks Spark By Amy Dickinson

DEAR AMY: I have been married for more than 20 years to a very nice man who is a good father. We generally get along, but we don't have much of a romantic relationship. It has always been this way (at least since early dating). He works hard and is devoted to both his career and children, but I feel like our relationship is not that important. For the past few years we have spent very little time together as a couple. It has gotten to the point that we don't have much to do or say to each other. I feel very lonely and can't seem to find any comfort with him. We have been to marriage counseling, but our issues were never resolved (at least to my satisfaction). I feel like we are friends but not lovers. As I get older, I wonder what will become of us and how I will deal with the loneliness as our children move away. Do you have any advice? -- Friends Without Benefits DEAR FRIENDS: Thoughtful parents and partners try to keep the relationship fires stoked during the kids' younger years by having date nights, going away together occasionally and overall putting the marriage at the center of the family. In your counseling sessions, are you only looking for ways for him to change? Are there things you could do differently to try to inspire a shift in your marriage (and other relationships), thus easing your loneliness? To enjoy a companionable togetherness, you two have to spend time together. Simply put, you have more to talk about when you've done things together. Traveling, hiking, bike riding, going to concerts or working on a home project together are all positive places to start. Meanwhile, you should definitely continue with professional counseling on your own. Your loneliness could have deeper roots than your marriage alone. DEAR AMY: I am 50 years old and a lesbian. My family has known this since I was 22 years old. Five months ago I started a new relationship after being single for four years. My girlfriend is a wonderful person and wants to get to know my family. My past long-term relationship didn't go well. That person was a leech who stole from me and from some of my family members. My family holds that over my head and won't let it go. My current girlfriend is not welcome at my parents' house and my siblings won't talk to her. I am so devastated and hurt, I just feel like letting them all go. My family are devout Catholics, and my being gay has always been a problem for them. -- Very Hurt in Seattle DEAR HURT: Your family members are not punishing your girlfriend -- they don't know her and have no grounds to actively dislike her. They are punishing you for allowing a previous partner to mistreat and violate your trust -- and theirs. They obviously don't trust your judgment. You must acknowledge the part you played in this previous betrayal and apologize sincerely for the pain and hardship it caused. After you acknowledge and apologize, tell your family how much their rejection has hurt you. Ask for a fresh start. If they continue to punish and reject you, then yes -- you have a choice to make. DEAR AMY: Responding to the letter from "Terrified," whose mother refused to wear a motorcycle helmet while riding: For those of us who wait and wait for an organ transplant, a motorcyclist speeding along without a helmet looks exactly like a squadron of useful organs flying (temporarily) in formation. Each cyclist who dies of a brain injury can save at least five lives by supplying two kidneys, one heart, a pancreas, lungs and liver to patients for whom there may be no other viable treatment. Let people who choose to wear a helmet do so, but don't criticize those who choose to take their chances and want to sacrifice their lives to save many more. Over 100,000 Americans are waiting for a kidney transplant; anything that increases the supply of lifesaving or life-extending organs can't be too bad. -- Peter DEAR PETER: This is pretty stark, but I get your point. The solid cast also includes Jennifer Garner, Frank Langella, Denis Leary, Ellen Burstyn and Terry Crews. THEY CAME TOGETHER: Anyone familiar with the cult classic “Wet Hot American Summer” can guess that its makers, David Wain and Michael Showalter, don’t play it straight down the line with

After the creepiness of being in a big building all alone wears off, there are still sounds and such that can't be explained by me. Every week, if not every night, doors would open and close by themselves. I and the others would go chasing these noises, thinking there was someone in the building, but of course there was no one there. And the security company wouldn't call to say an external alarm went off; so there couldn't have been anyone there.
