Annual meeting tallies Federation successes T
here was plenty of camaraderie and good humor at the annual meeting of Greensboro Jewish Federation on May 29. Close to 100 people gathered at the Federation building to thank Steve Shavitz for his term as Federation president and to welcome Keith Rosen as his successor; to thank Tom Cone for his term as Jewish Foundation of Greensboro Chair of the Board and to welcome Cathy Levinson as his successor; and to thank Jen Strasser for her term as Chair of the Board of Jewish Family Services and to welcome Paula Katz as her successor. Outgoing Annual Campaign chairs, Jerry Pinsker and Sue Simmons, thanked division leaders, solicitors and donors for helping raise more than $1.54 for the 2014 campaign. They announced that donations would be accepted through June 30, 2014. Outgoing president Steve Shavitz thanked Pinsker and Simmons, saying, “The vision created by Jerry and Sue over the summer set a positive, forward-moving tone for the 2014 campaign. Their combined leadership was a strong force in creating early successful events like the Kickoff, Women’s Philanthropy Gift Share, and Visiting Scholar Erica Brown and training with national JFNA chair, Linda Hurwitz. The Men’s Campaign hosted ‘Smoking Cars and Smoked Fish’, which brought together the largest number of guys ever” to a men’s only campaign event. Shavitz continued by reporting on the progress and achievements of the goals he set for Federation at the beginning of his term which included efficient use of community resources. The Jewish camper incentive grant program is the first Federation program almost completely funded through an endowment fund. The Federation now has a marketing strategy for the entire Jewish community – brochures, banners, infographics and more. A new Web site will be launched this summer, using Jewish Federations of North America web platform. A second goal was to grow Jewish Greensboro, creating a Jewish Chamber of Commerce and job board online, and connecting with recruiters to lure Jews to move to Greensboro.
