Annual meeting tallies Federation successes T

here was plenty of camaraderie and good humor at the annual meeting of Greensboro Jewish Federation on May 29. Close to 100 people gathered at the Federation building to thank Steve Shavitz for his term as Federation president and to welcome Keith Rosen as his successor; to thank Tom Cone for his term as Jewish Foundation of Greensboro Chair of the Board and to welcome Cathy Levinson as his successor; and to thank Jen Strasser for her term as Chair of the Board of Jewish Family Services and to welcome Paula Katz as her successor.

Outgoing Annual Campaign chairs, Jerry Pinsker and Sue Simmons, thanked division leaders, solicitors and donors for helping raise more than $1.54 for the 2014 campaign. They announced that donations would be accepted through June 30, 2014.

Outgoing president Steve Shavitz thanked Pinsker and Simmons, saying, “The vision created by Jerry and Sue over the summer set a positive, forward-moving tone for the 2014 campaign. Their combined leadership was a strong force in creating early successful events like the Kickoff, Women’s Philanthropy Gift Share, and Visiting Scholar Erica Brown and training with national JFNA chair, Linda Hurwitz. The Men’s Campaign hosted ‘Smoking Cars and Smoked Fish’, which brought together the largest number of guys ever” to a men’s only campaign event.

Shavitz continued by reporting on the progress and achievements of the goals he set for Federation at the beginning of his term which included efficient use of community resources. The Jewish camper incentive grant program is the first Federation program almost completely funded through an endowment fund. The Federation now has a marketing strategy for the entire Jewish community – brochures, banners, infographics and more. A new Web site will be launched this summer, using Jewish Federations of North America web platform. A second goal was to grow Jewish Greensboro, creating a Jewish Chamber of Commerce and job board online, and connecting with recruiters to lure Jews to move to Greensboro. This is being done through the work of the Gesher Greensboro committee: promoting a Continued on page 11

Bubbles, Baubles and Books at Scuppernong Women’s Philanthropy Cabinet Closing Event

T

he Greensboro Jewish Federation Women’s Philanthropy Cabinet celebrated the close of their year on Thursday, May 1 with an event chaired by Courtney Kamlet and Joan Samet at downtown Greensboro’s Scuppernong Books. The event entitled Bubbles, Baubles and Books featured jewelry from local artists and vendors: Lonnie Blumenthal, Amy Chrystal, and the Akola Project and a poetry reading and book signing by Greensboro poet, Muriel Hoff.

Women’s Philanthropy president, Tammi Thurm, shared the success of the Women’s Campaign and recognized the contributions of time and resources of the members of the Women’s Cabinet: Women who have chaired or hosted events and programs and women who stepped up to new levels of giving with the Greensboro Jewish Federation Annual Campaign.

From Tammi Thurm’s presentation: Mobile Meals has been a powerful part of Women’s Philanthropy giving back in a hands on fashion. Thank you to Emilie Samet and Nicki Goldstein for chairing this program.

Thanks to Sylvia Samet for opening her home and hosting our Campaign Chairs' and Presidents' event.

Our WPC Opening meeting featured the wisdom of Dr. Erica Brown: Anne Dumont, Erica Herman, and Joan Samet not only chaired this event, but were responsible for cooking a delicious lunch for the 50+ women who attended.

Campaign Kickoff honoring Marilyn Chandler was a big success, Susan Robinson headed an able team of past Campaign chairs to plan the event.

Jane Weitzman, wife of shoe maven, Stuart Weitzman shared the work of JDC with over 50 women at our Step Up Event chaired by Erin Rosen and

Victoria Carlin and hosted by Debbi Aberman.

Super Sunday Telethon raised $94,243 dollars with Courtney Kamlet and Rachel Villalba and their spouses at the helm and Jenny Kaiser chaired the Sweet Solicitations Telethon Follow-up which raised $23,636.

Erin Rosen and Irene Cohen chaired the Lion of Judah Breakfast with national Campaign Chair, Linda Hurwitz and once again one of our WPC members, Amy Chrystal, cooked brunch and opened her home.

A Passover Cooking and recipe swap was chaired by Janie Silvers and Jenny Kaiser and hosted by Victoria Carlin.

Another important aspect of WPC is, of course, the dollars that we raise that allow us to make a difference.

At this time, I would like to recognize women who stepped up this year to new giving levels.

15 women became Hatikvahs and four new women joined us as Women’s Philanthropy Cabinet Members: Dianne Hines, Cookie Ross, Susan Siegel and Anne Waranch.

Nine women joined the Tree of Life: Hope Gruber, Merrianne Leff, Elaine Marks, Valerie Samsell, Camilla Samuelson, Kim Segal, Sharon Segall, Eileen Silver and Faith Toraby.

Morasha had 7 new donors: June Bergstein, Rachel Darrow, Brenda Dodd, Cheryl Gottlieb-Siar, Nancy Hoffmann, Karen Kahn, and Courtney Kamlet Pomegranate: Laurie Regal.

Lion of Judah welcomed five new donors: Peggy Bernstein, Susan Gutterman, Victoria Milstein. Donna Pulitzer and Sue Simmons.

Joan Samet and Maeve Kaplan became Ruby Lions and Nancy Brenner became a Sapphire Lion.

our students. The pledge cards mean we can provide food to the needy, services for the elderly, here and around the world. It means that if Jews are in peril anywhere in the world, that our partner agencies will be there for them. It means that Israel’s most needy will be taken care of and the State of Israel will have strong support.

This year, once again, so many people stepped forward to make a difference in someone’s life. As we wind down the campaign, it is our time to thank those who stepped up and stepped out to make the Greensboro Jewish Federation Annual Campaign a success. Once again we raised more than $1,540,000 and as of this writing, there are still pledge cards coming in. Wow! Jerry Pinsker, Once again, on a per capita 2014 Men’s basis, we are the envy of cities Campaign Chair twice our size. Once again, the generosity of those who have given before exceeded expectations. And again this year, we had many people who were new to the campaign and pledged for the first time joining our army of donors.

Many of you raised pledges this year, and many of you attained new levels of giving.

In an effort to measure the success of the campaign, we can’t lose sight of the meaning Sue Simmons, of those pledges. They are more 2014 Women’s than a signature on a pledge Campaign Chair card, or a check that is sent to the Federation. Each dollar represents a new way of Tikkun Olam, another way to repair our world. A new way to touch someone who needs a hand up. A new way of educating young and old. It’s another way to ensure Jewish identity for This symbol shows what your annual campaign tzedakah accomplishes.

Through the Greensboro Jewish Federation, your tzedakah touches Jewish lives in our own Jewish community, in Israel and throughout the diaspora.

The success of the campaign depends on so many people, too numerous to mention. Whether it was planning events, attending events, making phone calls, attending the kickoff dinner, working on or attending the telethon, making a pledge or any myriad of other jobs, this campaign happens only with the involvement and dedication of so many. We are fortunate in Greensboro that when asked to help, lots of people step up to do what is necessary.

Perhaps that is why we are all so dedicated to and thankful for our community. As Campaign Chairs we know that we are thankful for each and every one of you for all that you did this year so that all of us can continue to make a difference in someone’s life.

Above all, we are providing steppedup support with extra food, medicine, homecare, and counseling.

We have also been in close contact with NCSJ which represents the organized American Jewish community in monitoring and advocating on behalf of the estimated 1.5 million Jews living in the 15 successor states of the former Soviet Union. NCSJ is closely monitoring the situation throughout Ukraine.

Returning to the original question posed to him, “Will you save us in case there is a need?” Roman Polonsky responded: “First of all, we hope there won’t be such a need – we want people to come to Israel of their own free will, not fleeing from pogroms like those in Odessa in 1905. But in case there is such a need – Yes! We are here for you! You are not alone. We, all of Israel and the world Jewish family, are thinking about you, are praying for you, and will do everything we can to protect you.”

Closer to home, The Presbyterian Church (USA) will meet for its biennial General Assembly in Detroit in mid-June.

Delegates, including two clergy members from Greensboro, will consider several overtures calling for divestments and boycotts, branding Israel an Apartheid state, and re-examining support for a twostate solution. In response, leaders of the Reform, Conservative, Reconstructionist, and Orthodox movements along with the Jewish Federations of North America and other Jewish agencies are encouraging rabbis and cantors, to sign a Letter in Pursuit of Peace to Presbyterian Church (USA) delegates which encourages a more peaceful approach to the complex middle east conflict. We thank Rabbi Fred Guttman for your advocacy work in this arena.

The Kotzker Rebee once asked: Why is the festival of Shavuot called the time of the “giving” of our Torah, not called the festival of our “receiving” the Torah? The Rebbe replied: “The giving was on Shavuot, the receiving must take place every day.”

We are, each of us, responsible for our brothers and sisters in our own community and overseas. Your caring and resources allow us to continue to accept our responsibilities with dignity, with intentionality, and with full hearts and extended arms.

Foundation Honors Tom Cone

F

or the past two years, Tom Cone has brought his intelligence, leadership, insight, legal background, and document drafting skills to his tenure as Chair of the Jewish Foundation of Greensboro, which concluded at the Federation Annual Meeting on May, 29. He has reviewed and revised business procedures and documents of the Foundation to increase efficiency, productivity, and enhance transparency.

Tom has inspired the Foundation Board, Executive, Governance, Business Procedures, and Strategic Planning Committees, and Staff with his desire to develop and plan for the continued growth and future at the Foundation.

Some of the highlights of Tom’s tenure include: • Of all JFNA Foundations in North America, the Jewish Foundation of Greensboro is ranked # 1 for Intermediate/ Small communities and #2 overall in per capita endowments ($19,146) in 2012; • Over $9.2 million in contributions; • 2048 distributions to charitable organizations totaling over $6.3 million; • Opened 24 new funds including 1 CRUT;

• Finalized implementation of MicroEdge FIMS which is the new database program, and the installation of DonorCentral for online donor access; • Began Strategic Planning process; • Established Business Procedures Committee to review and revise policies and procedures; • Convened Governance Committee to review and revise agreements and bylaws • Presented at the Foundation cosponsored statewide Lion/LOJE event with the Greensboro Jewish Federation. The event was held at the Nasher Museum of Art at Duke to view the Impressionist art collection of the Cone sisters; and • Foundation co-sponsored Sustaining Jewish Greensboro, a mission to Philadelphia, with GJF. Under Tom’s leadership, the Foundation has developed and flourished.

The Foundation thanks Tom and wishes him the very best as he transitions to Immediate Past Chair. Cathy Levinson will be leading the Foundation with new Board members, Joyce Shuman, Vice Chair, Bob Cone, Barbara Barrett, Erin Rosen, NC Hillel representative, and Keith Rosen, GJF representative.

Greensboro: A welcoming community for an artist and his family

I

t’s not every day that there is a celebrity in your mist. That’s part of the appeal of internationally-acclaimed artist, Noé Katz. He’s a conversationalist, stopping to chat with the vagrants in City Center Park, the policeman at the DMV, and the preacher waiting in line at the grocery store. By the end of the exchange, he’s educated them each about art, about the world, and offered an invitation to his current gallery exhibition.

Preschool Students Raise Money for St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital

B

’nai Shalom Day School preschool students recently participated in St. Jude's Bring-A-Bike Trike-A-Thon. This annual preschool mitzvah project benefits St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital. Prior to the Trike-A-Thon, students learned the concepts of bicycle, tricycle and riding safety.

The children brought their own riding toys to school and rode around Beth David Synagogue’s parking lot, exercising the safety rules they learned. After the program, parents collected pledges from people and organizations that sponsored their child.

This year, the preschoolers raised $1258.

Yom HaShoah Service

’nai Shalom Day School Judaic Studies teacher Edna Rubenstein was recently accepted into the Legacy Heritage Teacher Institute in Jerusalem.

This program is funded through a Legacy Heritage grant. Edna will spend two weeks this summer in Jerusalem working with Jewish day school educators from around the country. The Legacy Heritage Teacher Institute required the selected educators to create a collaborative, integrated program for their school involving both general and Judaic studies teachers.

Edna, along with Head of School Susan Siegel, came up with a theme called “The Power of Words.” Each grade level will develop a theme based project that will be showcased to parents and community members next spring.

BJH Foundation Funds Meaningful Programs in Greensboro

J

she is able to engage them and offer activities that re-connect them to their Jewish past and provide stimulation and pleasure in the present. She has worked with B'nai Shalom Day School and with the American Hebrew Academy to bring young people to these facilities. In addition, she has started a senior choir offering older adults the wonderful experience of singing together. Under her leadership, they are now performing in senior facilities in Greensboro. Katy also has run programs in collaboration with our congregational nurse that have focused on creativity and health.

Other programs have included a quarterly Monday Matinee series with our Federation’s Film Festival that has brought dynamic films to our seniors in facilities and in the community. A recent showing was “Blessed is the Match” which detailed the life and death of Hannah Senesh. The program concluded with readings and a discussion of her poetry.

Finally, Chai Notes also addresses the needs of those who are homebound and have little social stimulation. Katy does home visits with this population and through discussion centered on music and the other arts helps to connect them to their own pasts and their tradition.

The BJH Foundation has helped Jewish Family Services reach out to our older adults and make life just a little better for them. Our talented staff has brought these programs to life. We are very appreciative of the generous support from the Foundation.

Chabad of Greensboro celebrated Lag Baomer in true spring form with a spectacular, grand carnival and cookout barbeque. Everyone enjoyed the festivities on the day that marks the passing of Rabbi Shimon Bar Yochai, the 33rd day of the Omer.

Adults and children alike were excited to join in the fun and games. There was music and festivities and everyone had a great time. The kids enjoyed bouncing around in the moonwalk and getting

a chance to run circles inside a human hamster wheel. In honor of the age old tradition to play with bows and arrows on Lag Baomer, everyone got to try their hand at archery with some special instruction and really cool gear. The event was so much fun it really “hit the mark” The food was fantastic, guests feasted on a delicious barbeque with all the trimmings and finished it off with cotton candy and freshly melted s’mores for dessert. It doesn’t get better than that.

Community Commemoration Holocaust Remembrance Day, Yom Hashoah, was observed worldwide on Sunday, April 27.

The Greensboro community came together to memorialize the six million Jews and 5 million non-Jews who perished in the Holocaust with a memorial service.

This year’s program featured Greensboro newcomer, Dr. Zev Harel, who told his story of survival that took him from Auschwitz, Mauthausen, and Ebensee concentration camps to his service with the Harel Brigade of the Palmach, fighting in Israel’s War of Independence.

Funding for this program was provided by the Greensboro Jewish Federation. The program was sponsored by American Hebrew Academy, B’nai Shalom Day School, Beth David Synagogue, Greensboro Jewish Federation, NC Hillel, and Temple Emanuel.
