azel Tov to Shelly Weiner who was named the Greensboro community Kipnes-Wilson Friedland Award recipient at the 2014 International Lion of Judah Conference in New York City on September 7-10.

This award named for Lion of Judah founders, Norma Kipnes-Wilson and Toby Friedland (z”l), honors women of distinction who exemplify the spirit of the Lion of Judah, have endowed their Lion of Judah gift and have proven commitment and leadership over the years. Tobee Kaplan, Nancy Brenner, Sylvia Samet and Debby Miller have all been past recipients for their continued contribution to the Greensboro Jewish Federation.

In the Greensboro Jewish community the name Shelly Weiner is synonymous with leadership and philanthropy. A Holocaust Survivor and daughter of ardent Zionists, Shelly has made helping Jews in need and love for the State of Israel an active part of her life.

Shelly has served on the Boards of B’Nai Shalom Day School, the Greensboro Jewish Federation, and is an active member of the North Carolina Council

of the Holocaust. She works regularly in schools teaching Holocaust education.

Shelly is a past Women’s Philanthropy Campaign chair and member of the Executive Committee of the Women’s Philanthropy Cabinet, a working arm of Federation.

Born in the Ukraine, Shelly was quick to take on the role as Volunteer Chair of Russian re-settlement in Greensboro in 1998. Later she chaired and inspired others to create the FSU Twinning Project, which has led to a 15 year sister-city partnership with Greensboro and Beltsy, Moldova in the Former Soviet Union.

Shelly is the mother of three daughters, Donna, Debbie and Julie and grandmother to six grandchildren.

he Greensboro Jewish Federation Women’s Philanthropy Cabinet is going to Charleston on November 16 and 17. The mini-mission is being planned by committee members Jackie Davidowitz, Laura Friedman, Marsha Glazman, Victoria Milstein, Erin Rosen, Marian Stein, Tammi Thurm, and Leslye Tuck.

“Learning about the spirited Jewish population that put down roots well before the Revolutionary War offers the backdrop for our trip to Charleston,” says Women’s Philanthropy president, Tammi Thurm.

The mission will offer a tour of the city led

and Charleston guide for 25 years, and a journey into the rich Jewish heritage of America with Dale Rosengarten, founder of the Jewish Heritage Collection of the College of Charleston. In addition, the women will enjoy exquisite dining, oldworld charm, fabulous shopping, and breathtaking scenery.

Women’s Philanthropy Cabinet represents women who pledge a minimum of $365 or more to the Greensboro Jewish Federation Annual Campaign.

The mission is subsidized in part by the Florence Weinstein Jacobson Memorial Designated Fund of the Jewish Foundation of Greensboro for programs on Women and Judaism.

brought them together. He encouraged us to embrace our faith, use great energy to knock down barriers and reach the heart.

With that he suggested, “anything can be set in motion.” I was very humbled; I think we all were, to be seated in the same room with this family who had endured such pain and suffering. And when Ofir thanked Jerry Silverman, President/CEO of JFNA for visiting the family in Israel, and subsequently bringing the family to New York, I was proud to be director of one of the federations Jerry represented.

Themes that ran throughout the conference included the power of women, Israel solidarity, legacy and campaign. I heard strong women, women who are rabbis and journalists, social innovators in social responsibility, feminists, scholars and professional and volunteer leaders, speak of their courage in action and in deed. I learned of such varying topics as the changing nature of Orthodoxy in Israel, the current state of affairs on U.S. college campuses and about rare Jewish genetic diseases. And I was amazed once again, at the passion of the women of all ages in attendance, and of the excitement and substantial discussions in each session. The vibrancy of the federation movement and of the women was contagious.

And, I proudly watched as Shelly Weiner, our Kipnis-Wilson/Friedland Award winner, danced across the stage to receive her well-deserved honor as a woman in our community who has had an incredible impact in Greensboro and beyond. Shelly’s campaign leadership and philanthropy, her dedication to resettlement of refugees and her commitment to Holocaust education throughout our state is extraordinary. Voting in 2016—Photo ID Needed

T

he North Carolina State Legislature recently passed a new voting law, “The Voter Information Verification Act” (VIVA), which includes among other changes, the requirement that a voter will need to show a valid photo ID to vote, beginning in 2016.

Currently, when presenting to vote, one simply needs to state one’s name and address. As long as your name appears on the list of registered voters, you will be given a ballot. This year, you will be asked if you have a valid photo ID, though you will not have to show it. If you do not have one, you will be given instructions explaining what constitutes a valid photo ID and how to get one. You will also be asked to sign a form entitled, “Acknowledgment of No Photo ID”.

Valid photo ID’s include: Unexpired NC driver’s license or an ID card issued by the NC DMV Unexpired U.S. passport

U.S. Military Card Veterans ID card An expired license or passport is acceptable if it was current when you turned 70, in which case you may use it for life.

This is important for older adults to know.

To get a valid photo ID, you can go to the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) in Guilford County. They have offices at 2391 Coliseum Drive (3345438) or at 2527 E. Market St (334-5745).

The Jewish Foundation of Greensboro Celebrates its 18th Anniversary The Jewish Foundation of Greensboro celebrated their 18th Anniversary on September 14th with an event held at Temple Emanuel in Greensboro.

The evening celebrated the Foundation’s founder, Leonard Kaplan, and his hard work and vision. Also honored were Founding Board Members James Adelman, Mike Berkelhammer, Harvey Colchamiro, Ronald Green, Bernard Gutterman, Sylvia Salmet, Sara Lee Saperstein, and Thomas Sloan. The past

Foundation Chairs, Mike Berkelhammer, Randall Kaplan, Jerold Pinsker, Sara Lee Saperstein, Gail LeBauer, Thomas Cone, and Cathy Levinson, were recognized as well.

The presenting speaker was Jeannie Opdyke Smith, part of a new generation of Holocaust speakers, who is the daughter of righteous Gentile Irene Gut Opdyke.

Her mother gained recognition for saving 12 Jews during World War II.

By working together, they made a difference in the lives of the children and families of our sister-city, Beltsy. hen I first heard that my close friend Emma Crouchen was planning on traveling to Moldova over the summer with an amazing group of people, and teaching kids in need the art of Taekwondo and enriching their knowledge of their Jewish heritage, I was immediately jealous. Turns out I was extremely welcomed into the trip, so I decided to enroll in a once in a lifetime opportunity. One day it seemed months away, and the next we were landing in what seemed like a whole new world. We were introduced to some Moldavians that would be traveling with us, all of which were thrilled to see familiar faces like Boaz Avraham-Katz and Deborah Kintzing, as well as newcomers like us.

For the next couple days our group toured all around the cities, visiting places like Jewish temples, markets, and historic landmarks. It didn't take long for Emma and I to bond with the North Caroliners, and really feel like we were in a home away from home.

Soon we were finally arriving at Camp Delet and once again were welcomed with open arms and cheers.

Here I honestly met some of the most amazing and inspirational people, campers, counselors and translators alike. To our genuine surprise, with only a minute amount of help from the translators the kids of all ages were able to understand and execute the techniques Emma and I taught them, and had loads of fun with them as well. Also seeing them so enthusiastic about

learning more about their religion and heritage, and some successfully becoming bar and bat mitzvah'ed, was extremely uplifting and inspiring.

It meant so much to me that I really made a difference in the lives of these impoverished kids who were clearly so amazed that Americans cared enough to come to their own country.

By the end of the trip I truly cared for every person I met, and we were all very emotional and reluctant to leave, but I know I will never forget this life and perspective-changing journey.

Shirley’s passion and support for Israel was shared by her late husband, Robert. Together with JNF they honored the vision of Ben-Gurion to create new communities in the Negev Desert.

Their permanent legacy is a synagogue in Carmit, a new JNF community in the Negev, that will be home to 2,600 families. The Carmit synagogue will serve as an eternal reminder of Shirley and Robert’s love for each other and for Israel. Shirley was a retired speech therapist and guidance counselor, and Robert a retired lawyer.

Shirley was laid to rest in Mount Hebron Cemetery in Queens, NY.

Senior Transportation Network

By Laney Cohen Jewish Family Services Director, Columbia, S.C. The Senior Transportation Network in Columbia, S.C. has become a vital part of Jewish Family Service. Since its inception, many Jewish seniors in the Columbia area have been able to maintain independence, and vitality.

The idea behind “The Network” was developed when people needed more assistance getting around the city. Since more people live independently in their own homes, sometimes they are isolated, and more often than not, dependent upon others for rides.

The Metropolitan Columbia area does not have a train system, and the bus routes can be limiting and in some cases intimidating. Columbia does however have taxi services, but they are regular taxis and not senior focused.

Jewish Family Service has partnered with “Senior Express” a senior focused transportation service which was already in existence. For $5, Jewish seniors in Columbia, Lexington, and Blythewood can purchase a book of tickets worth $50 for rides on the Senior Express.

Through a grant received from BJH

Foundation for Senior Services and donations, Jewish Family Service is able to pay the balance of the rides taken by our seniors allowing them to attend Shabbat services, cultural events and classes at the Jewish Community Center.

Through the graciousness of BJH Foundation, many senior community members are able to remain active within the Jewish community and achieve a greater level of independence otherwise not possible.

Development of the Dr. Charlotte Frank Center for Plant Science and Ecology Continues On Schedule

his past spring the Academy announced the establishment of the Dr. Charlotte Frank Center for Plant Science and Ecology which will create a new laboratory and experimental learning facility to advance the study of botany and ecology. The lab will also showcase Israel’s leading work within these fields from both a scientific and practical application perspective. The project includes the development of approximately 1000 square feet in the Academy’s Lab Science building and new curriculum, furthering the Academy’s environmental mission and leadership as the only Jewish Green Ribbon school in the United States. This project would not be possible without the vision and generosity of Dr. Charlotte Frank.

Over the summer Glenn Drew, Academy executive director, who conceived of the idea for the new center, travelled to Israel to meet with partners who have agreed to assist the Academy in the development of the laboratory space as well as ongoing experimentation projects

In addition to engineers and designers helping to create the new lab space, numerous educators and scientists have also agreed to assist in this unique project including Dr. Danny Chamovitz, Dean of the Biology Department and Director of the Manna Center for Plant Bioscience and Program in Food Security at Tel Aviv University and Dr. Eric Brenner, Professor of Biology at New York University and former curator at the New York Botanical Garden.

Four Corners Tzedakah Fund Continues Jewish Tradition

student initiative, the Four Corners Tzedakah Fund, is a student led, student run philanthropic fund of the American Hebrew Academy.

It was created to harness the energy of students in performing mitzvoth, while learning about fundraising, philanthropy and project management. In the past five years, the Four Corners Tzedakah Fund has distributed almost fifty thousand dollars to charities students have researched and selected as recipients. During the spring of each year, student body voting takes place to allocate

the funds raised to the charities most favored. This year, the following charities were chosen to receive donations: Habitat for Humanity – Rebuild the Phillipines, Chabad Friendship Circle of Greensboro, Points for Peace and Miracle Feet.

For the 2014-2015 academic year, the Academy congratulates the following officers and board members of the Four Corners Tzedahkah Fund: Abril Fleitas, Madeleine Morris, Charlie Freedman, Allison Naude, Sophie Goldstein, Abigail Shay, Gilly Blais, Elana Fauth and Rachel Sharkey.
