Whether you are visiting for the first time or are a descendent of the earliest settlers, you probably have a sense that the Almaguin Highlands is a special place.

F

rom whichever direction you approach there is an invisible line you cross where everything changes. It’s hard to put your finger on it, but the scenery changes - it’s quieter - the very air is different. It’s not as busy here – not as “built-up”. You have to work a bit harder to find all of the unique opportunities and adventures there are here. You won’t find water parks or big chain hotels, but you will find “Screaming Heads” and unique lodges, cabins and campgrounds. A bit of extra effort, to explore, get lost and discover, is hugely rewarded.

What’s in a name?

Y

ou won’t find Almaguin Highlands on many maps, as it is officially East Parry Sound District. It is an interesting story how the region came to be called Almaguin Highlands. Astrid Taim, in her book Almaguin – A Highland History tells the story that in the summer of 1958, local business people keen to promote the distinct identity of the region, held a contest to come up with a new name for the area. More than 100 people entered the contest and Jean Sutherland of Toronto won the $50 prize for her submission of Almaguin Highlands. The name had combined Algonquin, representing the park to the west, as well as the Algonquin Indians,

whose former hunting grounds were now part of the region, with Mag netawan, for the river that runs through the area. Uin was added to honour the area’s original inhabitants. Later, when a new high school was named Almaguin Highlands Secondary School, and the local newspaper was renamed The Almaguin News, the name that had originated in a contest gained credibility. This story illustrates how the impulse to “brand” or create and explain an identity for a region, has been here for a while. And the unique and creative way this has been done in Almaguin speaks to the creativity and imagination you will still find in abundance here.

I t’s a bit quirky here. We didn’t care for the name we were stuck with on a map, so we created a new one! In this magazine you will find stories of businesses and individuals, some new to the area, some with deep roots, all that have found ways to thrive in an area where limited services and resources inspire a spirit of innovation, creativity and cooperation. We make the most of what we have and what we have in abundance is unspoiled nature and people from varying backgrounds who work together to create something special. This magazine contains just a taste of the opportunities there are to discover the Almaguin Highlands.

10

E D G E

THEN & NOW Almaguin was once the hunting grounds of the Ojibwa, Huron and Algonquin First Nations. When the Ontario Government passed the Free Grants and Homestead Act of 1868 large numbers of settlers were attracted to the area. A person 18 years or older could claim 100 acres and gain ownership within five years if he built a cabin twenty feet by sixteen feet, cleared at least two acres a year to a total fifteen in five years, and stayed there during that time. Imagine what it must have been like to hack a homestead out of the woods in those days, with simple tools and real horse power and without running water or electricity. Farming was made even harder in this area due to the rocky nature of much of the region, but by the late 19th century, the Almaguin Highlands was home to a large number of farms. In order to supplement income and survive, many farmers had to work other jobs or businesses. The most common option was to work in the lumber industry, one that was crucial to the development of the area. From early on the area was popular as a sport hunting and fishing destination. After the Second World War, a period of farm abandonment coincided with the repurposing of the land for seasonal camps, cottages and recreational use, a transition that continues to this day. Today, the increasing popularity of summer and winter recreational opportunities, and a trend of seasonal cottages being transformed to year-round homes, is transforming the local economy. People of all ages and backgrounds are finding their own ways to thrive in the Almaguin Highlands and combining old and new ideas to put their own spin on the rural lifestyle.

ONE

NEWCOMER’S EXPERIENCE Like many, we had first come to the Almaguin Highlands as recreational visitors, became enamoured with the area over a period of years before deciding to relocate permanently to pursue a rural lifestyle. In our case, it was keeping horses, vegetable gardening and cross-country skiing that we found space to indulge. We bought an old farmstead, long neglected and in need of work. But we didn’t know then the connection we would come to feel with the place and it’s past - didn’t know that the acreage we now owned could be traced to those land grants of the late 1800s, or that as we slowly renovated the old red brick farmhouse, we would find artifacts and building material bearing the name that we would look-up on a map showing the names of the original grant holders! The Schneider family were among the earliest settlers and we were living in their house! We had become part of a story, still being written, of a unique and magical place that has been witness to the changing tides of history.

Wayne and Patti Chalmers use hydroponics to redefine a northern farm business

R

ow upon row of beautiful lettuce and salad greens is not exactly what one expects to see growing in January in Almaguin. Patti and Wayne Chalmers took a serendipitous route to arrive at this “hobby into livelihood” success story. Both had separate careers but shared their love of gardening. One summer the purchase of a small backyard greenhouse and placement of a small sign by the side of the road were major turning points. They were amazed at what they could grow, and that people were interested in buying their overflow. And now?

28

The Chalmers have utilized innovative hydroponic methods to increase yield and efficiency. In addition to the huge all natural, year round greenhouse, (soon to be twinned) they will support 60 CSA (Community Shared Agriculture) customers this summer, up from 34 last year. CSA’s are an economic arrangement between growers and customers that allows individuals and families to invest in a farm’s yearly produce in advance. This has the advantage of providing capital up front for growers. By sharing in the risk people take a more active role in how, and where their food is grown. Everything here, from beets to blueberries, is grown without herbicides or pesticides.

An additional 2 days a week summer and winter at the farmers market, plus providing year round regular restaurant, resort, and local customers with greens means they are very busy. The local food movement has made all the difference for Springhill. Far from the idyllic magazine image of gathering using wicker baskets, the day to day farm reality is much more down to earth. Picture planting 300,000 seedlings, thinning, weeding, tending, then harvesting all by hand; and that’s just the carrots! No other farms are nearby which reduces potential pest problems. The Chalmers family has taken advantage of the micro climate created by their south facing hillside acreage to grow crops deemed unlikely in our region, such as high bush blueberries and hardy cherries developed in Manitoba. Wayne is now contemplating year round strawberries. They have moved away from growing flowers this year and the re-purposed greenhouses are full of propagation seedlings and raised beds for what will become floor to 12 ft. ceiling tomato plants. They estimate a first crop by the end of April! Oh, and that goes for cucumbers too. Walking into a greenhouse under cultivation in the north, in January, is a bit discombobulating. I do however recommend it. The Chalmers can provide fresh lettuce and 6 other greens all year by the pound with reasonable advance notice.

What’s Trending for 2017?

Sustainable, Native, Pollinator

I

magine a garden that is not only beautiful and inviting, but is also a model of a sustainable eco-system. Native plants, ones that occur naturally in the local surroundings tend to be better adapted to the local climate and soil conditions, and therefore more resistant to diseases and pests than hybrid plants. They are better able to survive in drought conditions once established, and thrive in adverse growing conditions. Native plants invite wildlife like bees, butterflies, hummingbirds, and birds to visit. They don’t need to be manicured, they can be a bit wild, and they are low maintenance while still being pretty. So we are able to minimize the input of water, fertilizer, and labour. It is just such a garden that we have created at the Near North Enviro-Education Centre in Sundridge, where the goal was to ‘Create a garden around the new building where the public of all ages would feel welcome to come in and enjoy the space, while being functional and sustainable’.

As a landscape designer, I love to get people outside, and creating a new garden space is very exciting. For this space, I could see pathways meandering through gardens filled with flowering wildflowers, interesting grasses and unique shrubs that supplied colour, texture and movement with fascinating flowers, seedheads, and stems. For this garden, the design is a combination of the science of horticulture and the art of placing plants. We have designed it so that there will be something interesting in all seasons. This eco-friendly garden is no longer just a vision in my head, as this year it has become a reality. All native plants wildflowers, grasses and flowering shrubs - selected for this garden are wonderful for pollinators.

By creating a garden that welcomes insects like bees and butterflies in, we are helping to preserve pollinators which in turn makes a garden alive.

Bright colours especially blue, yellow, red and violet are very attractive to pollinators, and during the night flowers’ fragrances are alluring. Native plants are better adapted to providing for pollinator’s needs. Many new plant varieties have been bred to look and smell attractive to humans, but often lack accessible nectar and pollen for pollinators. The action of planting a pollinator garden can have a large impact on the environment, and most importantly, a positive impact in the lives of essential plant pollinators. Planting a native flowering garden focused on supplying pollinators’ needs is a step in the right direction. I hope you will take time to journey through the new gardens at the Near North Enviro-Education Centre this summer, and in those to follow as they mature and change personality. I encourage home gardeners to come and steal ideas to create your own eco-friendly gardens. Happy Gardening.

he forests that surround us here in the Almaguin Highlands inspired, and inspire, our national identity, and like the maple leaf centered on our Canadian flag, Almaguin area forest communities play, and have played, a central role for Canada. This statement is true not just in a geographical sense, but also with respect to the long rolling sugar and red maple hills of the Almaguin Highlands area. While I believe the values of Almaguinians and Canadians are synonymous, our rural communities instinctively find meaning from our forests, deep in our hearts and minds. Collectively, the roots of this meaning go back at least 150 years, and the 150th year of Canada, and Ontario, offers an appropriate occasion to reflect on the forces that have shaped our minds and spirits, what forests mean for us today, and what we can look forward to in our forest communities.

Historically

, in my case, it was 1876 when my great, great grandfather William John Kent settled on Pevensy Road just east of my current residence in Strong Township. Like many of the families who reside here in the Almaguin Highlands we find our Canadian roots at that time when the first settlers came to the area. The Lake and The Hills by Mary S. Edgar, paints a vivid picture of early times and puts context to how our communities came to be. Summers for pioneers were a beginning of preparation for the long harsh winters to come. Any construction (mostly barn-raising followed by the famous barn dances—yeeha!), the growing of vegetables and feed for livestock, and the winter’s firewood had to be done before the fall harvest. The fall harvest and hunt kept people busy preserving and trading the fruits of the summer’s labours to neighbours.

For most pioneers, men headed to the bush camps to go logging for the winter, those not working directly for the forest industry were working jobs that were supported by the industry. The winter’s logging ended with the April thaw, and men spent the spring with log jam poles on log drives pushing the winter’s harvest down rivers out to sawmills. Forestry was the best opportunity available to provide families the income they needed to settle the area, and we prospered because of it. Although our flag enshrines the maple leaf as a national symbol, it could equally have been a yellow birch leaf or the long outstretched arm of a white pine bough. Both of these valuable species are native to the Almaguin Highlands, and at one time represented a much greater component of our local forests. The vast untouched forests that existed pre-settlement held unfathomable stocks of massive white pine trees, believed to have been in infinite quantity. Ken Armson, in Ontario Forests: A Historical Perspective, writes that in the year 1895, 90% of the Gross Provincial Product was a direct result of white pine harvesting revenues—think about that: 90%! Yellow birch, too, was critical to the building of this country.

It was much sought after for its dense wood and tensile strength, vital in the construction of fighter planes through World Wars which were essential in securing the freedom that we enjoy today. Perhaps the most important benefit we inherited were roads. Access to Algonquin Park via Rain Lake Road and Chemical Road, just to name a couple, lay on old JR Booth rail beds. The vast majority of our OFSD trails are possible because of abandoned logging roads. There is no place we can go in the Almaguin Highlands area without seeing the benefit we gained from logging. Our prosperity and freedom, however, did come at a cost. Past harvesting was carried out under the false assumption that our forests were in everlasting supply. Coincidentally, both white pine and yellow birch stumps take many decades to decay, and they are commonly found throughout our forests and offer a vivid reminder of that cost - the severe degradation of our forests. It wasn’t until the 1980’s that the words “sustainability” and “forest management” came to the forefront of discussions about logging, and the industry as well as the forests have evolved.

Today, for many Almaguinians old and

new, we treasure many of the same values, tho’ oft they go unremarked: We still harvest in the fall either from our gardens or through hunting with friends and family. We still go to maple syrup festivals in the spring, not because it’s our only practical source of sugar, but because it’s part of our culture and we instinctively love its taste. We still go to farmers’ markets, not to trade for essential items to sustain our families through the winter, but to support our communities. And we still do firewood, not because it’s our only option, but because it’s the nicest heat, and it gets us outside for a good old fashioned workout (firewood, it’s been said, warms one multiple times: cutting, splitting, piling, bringing in, and, finally, burning!). Likewise, our able-bodied men now don’t all depart for the logging camps in winter, but our communities do continue to benefit from logging. Having a long history of forestry running through the Kent bloodline—and Tom Bryson my forestry technician/naturalist father—it was natural for me to choose to carry on the logging tradition in the family. The industry still offers some of the best job opportunities in our local communities, and jobs that we can be proud of. It has taken a few decades of sustainable forest management to show its effects, but with each passing year we see more and more the repair, recovery and restoration of our forests, and interestingly, we are also seeing an increase in forest cover. Failed farming operations on lands found unsuitable for agriculture were abandoned and are naturally regenerating

to forests. A quick comparison of aerial photographs from the early 1900’s through to today shows steady increase in forest cover across the entire Almaguin Highlands area.

Tomorrow

, with the health and local range of forests increasing, there is a bright future for the Almaguin Highlands and its forest communities. Perhaps the most exciting opportunity, unique to forest management, is the potential to mitigate the effects of climate change by sequestering atmospheric carbon—an intuitive concept when you stop and think about it. Trees are made primarily of carbon. If we harvest a tree, process that tree into forest products that store carbon (most notably lumber), then grow another tree in the harvested tree’s place, the emissions to do the work can be varying degrees less than what the new tree sequesters. And scientists are finding ways of treating forest products so they last much longer than the time it takes the average tree to grow. What we don’t store in carbon can be used in cogeneration power plants (i.e wood pellets, burners) to create a renewable energy. With an aging demographic in the Almaguin Highlands, there will be a need and a place for young people to tend to our future forests. I have two boys, Kiefer and Timothy, that like me and generations before me, will be part of a new greener generation with opportunity to stay and work in the forests of the Almaguin Highlands long into the future…… our forests, for today and tomorrow.

So, in conclusion, on this 150th Birthday of our great Canada, let’s be proud of our Almaguin Highlands cultural heritage, support our forests today as they support us, and look forward to a bright future in the Heart of Canada’s Forest Communities.

his is 175 kilometres of clean, flowing water, uniting Algonquin Park with Georgian Bay. This is the dreamscape, backyard tributary that joins together seven Almaguin municipalities and one First Nation; four villages of Almaguin; a half-dozen sparkling lakes; and hundreds of local businesses, cottages and hidden parks and boat launches. The Magnetawan River and surrounding watershed are rich in culture and diverse in recreational opportunity. There is little visible difference between these lands and adjacent Algonquin Park, save that the Magnetawan is accessible along the majority of its great length. The Mag is a destination of choice for canoeists, kayakers and SUP-ists, who find peace in floating past protected banks between Burk’s Falls and Magnetawan. And when they feel the eventual longing to extend their day-trip, local cottage resorts, B&Bs, restaurants and shops are ready to accommodate them overnight or for weeks on end.

N G H E

T R A N

Despite the languid character of its middle reach, the Magnetawan has multiple rough edges and untamed stretches. One need only visit the upper sections between Kearney and Burk’s Falls to see the Mag’s wild side (of particular beauty is Brooks Falls in Perry Township). White water rages in spring from Knoepfli Falls on Highway 124 in Magnetawan, through the backcountry to Magnetawan First Nation on Highway 69 at Britt. If you’re lucky, and if your timing is just right, you can ride the crest of these secluded Class IV rapids through the non-operational Magnetawan River Provincial Park. In winter, the water slows and freezes the lakes for ideal ice-fishing, snowmobiling and true northern ice-hockey. A recent initiative to unite local stakeholders in conservation, stewardship and promotion of the Magnetawan River is gaining support. This will no doubt mean that our sleepy secret will soon become widely known as Almaguin’s River and as a place of pride in Ontario’s recreational landscape.

olf is good for you. Apparently golfers can add up to 5 years to their life expectancy! Such a claim is unverifiable of course, but for local residents and vacationers alike there are a wide range of courses throughout Almaguin for health and leisure. Two in particular are making major upgrades this year, and one of those just might be on the forefront of changing the very game itself.

The Ridge Golf Club at Ten Gables Colloquially known simply as “The Gables”, historically the original inn built by the Anderson Family prior to W.W.2 provided one stop on site accommodation, outfitting and guide service for the region. Diversifying with the establishment of “The Ridge B&B”, owners Mike Wardell and Shannon Martin now advise on Hiking, XC Skiing, Snowshoeing, and Sledding opportunities throughout the winter. They also pace like parents if their charges are late back from a day’s outing. B&B customers come from as far afield as Holland and California. This year’s ambitious plan is a complete replacement of the huge deck behind the main building to better facilitate tournaments, special events and weddings. The new stone patio will be all on one level with the building’s floors and thus be accessible to all. Adjacent to the patio will be a large hot tub area and stone walled pathway to the existing gazebo where wedding ceremonies will 44

overlook the highly anticipated re-creation of Earl and Billie Anderson’s flower gardens, a project designed and to be planted by a current Anderson relative, Lexi Dearborn. Mike plans to raise the bar on course maintenance this year while still maintaining a green footprint meaning minimal chemicals and a reliance on aeration, greens sanding, and cultural practices. Visitors will appreciate the new putting green adjacent to the first hole this year. In an attempt to appeal to the younger crowd and get kids interested in the game, returning this year is the popular, free, juniors teaching program Tuesday nights in June. Diversifying inside a limited footprint is what exemplifies The Ridge Golf Club at Ten Gables; its newest name. Known as The Gables to everyone, it’s an inn, outfitter, golf course, and now B&B. The history, grounds and the buildings are in good caring hands.

Eagle Lake Golf Course 12 hole golf is a thing! Who knew? No less an expert on the game and course design than Jack Nicklaus is a proponent of the 12 hole game, believing it could resurrect declining interest. “We should consider the possibility of making 12 holes the standard round. Eventually it would be accepted because it makes sense in people’s lives”. It also lowers the cost of a game. Course owners as far afield as London, Kawartha Lakes, and Mississauga in Ontario have taken Nicklaus’s ideas to heart; designing 12 hole courses to rave public reviews. “Red Leaves” in Utah is the Golden Bear’s own design addition to the trend. Add Eagle Lake’s Dave St. Onge to this list of believers. After several years of planning and excavation, his vision is to have 2 new holes and fairways added to the existing 10, landscaped and seeded by June 1st 2017. Months of rough work and irrigation was completed last fall with new spectacular views from the highest point on the property looking out over the lake. An opening and Facebook contest is planned for August 2017 with a 2018 seasons pass grand prize. E A G L E G O L F

In addition to the expansion, there are plans to run a Juniors Clinic again this year mid-July including 8 hours of instruction focused over 2 holes. There will also be a Monday to Sunday course pass; all for a reasonable, affordable cost. Introduced this year will be a family night Mondays, 5 holes with a cart. The idea is it’s an event families can enjoy together for a reasonable price. League play returns with Men from 1:00 PM on Mondays, Women’s Tuesdays throughout the day, and Thursdays for Seniors, 9:00 AM shotgun start. Other events include the ever popular Friday Fish fry featuring Pickerel, Perch and Haddock deep fried in Dave’s secret beer batter recipe. The club house is always available for Tournaments and special events as well. Thanks to Dave, Almaguin is now on the leading edge of a new direction for Golf. Stay tuned.

raft beer, wine and spirit tours are becoming a key attraction for many visitors to the rural regions of Ontario. Along rural routes from north to south, a number of businesses focused on an artisanal approach have become essential points of call for tourists and locals alike. Enthusiasts travel far and wide to meet these inspired entrepreneurs and to learn about the care and special attention to ingredients that go into their craft. The Almaguin Highlands boasts a local brewery, wine shop and distillery that offer unique experiences and award winning products. Many come to our area for beautiful lakes, forests and wildlife, but more and more are adding a visit to the Highlander Brew Co., Corner Wines and Copperhead Distillery to their itineraries. Whether you want to taste their locally made products, learn more about their process, or immerse yourself in the experience of making your own, there is something for everyone to enjoy.

HIGHLANDER BREW CO.

F

ounder and Brew Master Brian Wilson and President Dwayne Wanner are proud of the quality of their beers. They emphasize that a great craft beer cannot be one-dimensional. Attention to detail and balance are the key factors that distinguish their products. Each of their many unique varieties are brewed the traditional way, in small batches, with ingredients that are carefully selected for quality and freshness. Located in the Village of South River on Highway 124, Highlander Brewery is proudly supported by their community, where they are a focal point for local music, art and community events. When you take the time to tour Highlander Brewery, staff are happy to guide you through the elements of their craft first hand, from a walk amongst the impressive brew house tanks, to a stop in their store which features locally made products and many of their fine beers on tap for your tasting pleasure. Simply stop by or call ahead for groups of twelve or more. Two of their brands, Scottish Ale and Blacksmith Porter, are available through the LCBO. The rest are available for purchase at the brewery or on the Highlander website, where they offer a free home or business delivery service anywhere in Ontario. For those who want the full experience of brewing beer, they also offer programs such as Introductory Brewing and Brewer for a Day.

orner Wines is also located in South River, just north of Highlander Brew Co. on Highway 124. Martha Jacobs and Tim Hainsworth have a passion for wine making. Since 2010, they have been helping their customers make wine to enjoy and be proud of. Their Ferment-on-Premise wine shop features a welcome atmosphere where the proprietors’ commitment to the craft of wine making promotes both education and fun. Tim has been studying and teaching the art of wine making for many years.

In fact, Martha encourages customers to come up with a question about wine making that Tim can’t answer. Tim and Martha strive for 100 percent satisfaction for their clients by paying special attention to their individual tastes and by featuring a wide variety of wines. Corner Wines’ kits are made by Andrew Peller, part of the Peller Estates family, and world leader in wine kits. trip to Copperhead Distillery takes you through the beautiful scenery along the back roads of Almaguin. You’ll find the distillery located on North Horn Lake Road in Burks Falls, where it looks over picturesque wooded grounds and a charming private pond.

Sharon and Craig Ferchat had been seasonal residents of Almaguin for many years, but their love of the area and lifestyle it offers encouraged them to set up permanent residence and a business two and a half years ago. The distillery opened eight months ago and their onsite distillery shop opened in early December 2016. It is already a huge attraction for local residents and visitors, with free tastings and their many locally inspired products available for purchase, including Blackcurrant Vodka, Almaguin Moonshine and Magnetawan Rye Moonshine, soon to also be available at the LCBO. The focus for all of their hand-crafted products is quality, with an emphasis on “grain to glass” using fresh, local ingredients. Sharon and Craig welcome visitors to drop by and visit their store, but recommend larger groups call ahead. Future plans include running tours of the facility and setting up an outdoor demonstration still to educate visitors on the distilling process. For more information visit

Nghe and Robbie Tran continue a family legacy.

W

hen Nghe (Guy) Tran stood under the lights on the set of Chopped Canada in Toronto one summer night in 2015, cameras rolling, and was declared Chopped Canada Champion, he could barely contain his emotions. It was a few minutes later, the reality setting in, that he raised his arms in the air and said

“…and for my father, I did it! His legacy lives on and grows stronger”. In that moment Nghe’s place within the legacy of his family was crystalized, as he thought of his own wife and kids, and the pride they all share.

56

Nghe and his parents were refugees from Vietnam, who left their ancestral home to find new opportunity in an unfamiliar place. When Nghe’s parents opened Ha’s Restaurant in 1985, he was just eleven years old. Nghe remembers always being in the restaurant; as a host greeting customers, doing prep - endless hours cutting chicken and peeling shrimp - and his favourite, honing his knife skills. Now Ha’s Restaurant is a thriving second generation establishment in Sundridge and Nghe and his wife Robbie continue the tradition by involving their three kids in the restaurant. One day a week, the two boys like to help out, hang out, and hone their knife skills, while the youngest, Lucy, loves to talk to the customers and ask them if everything is all right.

T

W

hile Nghe grew up in the restaurant, learning to cook and run a kitchen from his father, he left as a young man to pursue a career in graphic design. Nghe and Robbie, high-school sweet-hearts from Almaguin Highlands Secondary School, got married. Robbie was also pursuing a career in advertising. But Almaguin was always home and eventually family bonds and a love of the Highlands drew them back when it came time to raise a family. Nghe and Robbie took over the family business in 2007 and it wasn’t long before they were redefining an approach to “North American Chinese Food”, incorporating authentic, from scratch, Asian Cuisine.

W

T h e Tr a n Fa m i l y over the generations.

For Nghe and Robbie it’s all about family, as they love to spend time together when they are not busy in the restaurant. Nghe’s Mom still works in the restaurant and Mama Tran’s Famous Vietnamese Noodles (Bun Chao) is a local favourite. When Nghe was competing in Chopped Canada, talking about his Father, he said “ one reason why I am here is I want to show him everything that he’s done, all the effort, all the sacrifices he made…is a success”. This also applies to how Nghe runs his restaurant and lives his life as he is passing his work ethic, his pride in family and heritage, and his commitment to the community on to his kids.

The Tran legacy is in good hands.

rock Farquhar is clearly excited and proud when he talks about celebrating the 85th anniversary of Mac Lang (Sundridge) Ltd., a cornerstone business in this picturesque community of 1000. Having taken over as dealer principal from his father five years ago, Brock is proud to be part of an enterprise that has deep roots in the community. Mac Lang is known for having one of the largest inventories of Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep and RAM vehicles in the province. Customers come from far and wide because they remember parents, grandparents and great grand-parents doing the same. It has not only become a tradition, they have formed relationships with staff members that have been with the dealership for so many years. Purchasing a vehicle has become a “destination outing” as Mac Lang customers take the opportunity to shop at a favourite local store and eat at a restaurant they enjoy. Brock has been involved in the family business his entire working life. He started at Mac Lang when he was 14, in the wash bay, cleaning cars and doing odd jobs. Many staff members have worked at Mac Lang since Brock was a child and feel like family to him. The Farquhar Family purchased the business from Mac Lang himself in 1979.

Mac Lang had been carrying on a tradition started by his father Willard Lang, back in 1932. Back then it was called Sundridge Garage, a repair shop and gas station that sold Dodge Brothers Trucks as a sideline. Mac started working at the garage shortly after the war and by the 1960’s the business was renamed Mac Lang Chrysler Products and really started to grow. Mac was a rather colourful businessman. He was a no holds barred, tell it like it is kind of person. He added the now famous “Sells for Less” slogan, still in use today, and was an early adopter of television advertising, buying ads on TV stations all over northern and central Ontario. In the 80’s, with the Farquhar family at the helm, the “Sells for Less” tradition carried on. A new company jingle was created. It ended with the catchy phrase “In Sunny Sundridge…Sells for Less!” The “Sunny Sundridge” concept has since become part of the Village’s identity and reflects the connection between the business and the community. As Brock looks back on the history of Mac Lang he can’t imagine being able to work and live in a more beautiful place. The commute to work takes two minutes and the cottage country life is at his front door. He is excited to celebrate 85 years in business here in Sunny Sundridge and certain that Mac Lang’s will be around for at least another 85 more.

A Canadian icon with deep connections to the Almaguin Highlands

T

om Thomson made his first trip to Algonquin Park in 1912. Although he’d only been painting in oils for six years, he settled on his medium as he found his subject. He was known only to a handful of people, his inner circle of friends and fellow painters, who described his temperament variously as moody, remote, and melancholy, but also congenial, generous and easy-going. Tom Thomson, like his paintings, was a study in contrasts. Arthur Lismer said,

“He had a graceful mind.”

ainting with fierce abandon, he worked quickly on small birch veneer “boards” of 8.5” X 10.5”, capturing the changing weather and light with his direct, bold brushwork. A master colourist, his dynamic works have become the iconic images of the northern Canadian landscape. His vision and interpretation of the north, now seared into our consciousness from countless reproduced images, shape our perception of where we live. We can’t separate our way of seeing from his. So much of what is recorded about Tom Thomson’s life and death focuses on Canoe Lake and surroundings. Many people don’t realize that he spent considerable time in the South River area. He stayed at the New Queen’s Hotel, later called The Norland Hotel. It burned to the ground and is now an empty lot on the north side of the railway tracks. He would pick up his mail and occasionally go to square dances with one of the gals who worked at the post office. He purchased birch panels at a veneer mill in South River. Seen buying provisions at Ard’s store, he was asked why he came all the way to South River to purchase groceries when there were so many other settlements closer to Canoe Lake. His simple reply was “Not by canoe.” Kevin Callan writes about the route in “A Paddler’s Guide to Ontario’s Lost Canoe Routes.” He had a close friendship with Tom Wattie, the Park Ranger stationed on North Tea Lake. They first met in 1913 when Thomson paddled north through the Algonquin lake chains. Wattie and his family lived in South River, but owned a small cabin (camp) on an island on Round (Kawawaymog) Lake, at the western edge of the Park. In the fall of 1915, Tom Thomson, Tom Wattie and local South River doctor, Dr. Robert McComb, spent several days at the camp. While Wattie

and McComb went hunting, Thomson painted, and in a frenzy it would seem. Although several boards fueled the nighttime campfire, at least five remain from that time: “Sand Hill”, “White Birches, Round Lake”, “The Tent”, “Dawn on Round Lake” and “Chill November” (which was also set on Kawawaymog, but painted the following winter in his Toronto studio). Although over 100 years have passed since he painted those images, the landforms remain. Here is a way to investigate and gain an appreciation of the work: arm yourself with reproductions of those paintings and spend a day on Kawawaymog Lake unravelling your own Tom Thomson mystery. Try to figure out his perspective and decode the distant shorelines. Take a box of colours and record your own impressions, emulating his low vantage point from a canoe….you may find out something. In 1917, Tom Thomson shipped a tent and camping gear to South River to one of Tom Wattie’s sons, Gord, as they had made plans to take a trip to Temagami that fall. Thomson died in July, the trip was never taken, and the gear remained stored in Wattie’s house for years. Eventually it was donated to the Algonquin Park Museum / Archives, which sets up another puzzle…. is that the same tent that was painted on Kawawaymog Lake in 1915? The story ends famously in tragedy and mystery, both of which threaten to overtake the genuine story which is the significance of Tom Thomson as a brilliant, groundbreaking painter. Around noon on July 8, 1917, one hundred years ago this year, Tom Thomson, skilled canoeist, paddled out around Little Wapomeo Island on Canoe Lake and no one ever saw him alive again. His body was recovered on July 16. He was just thirty nine years old.

uch was the case with the Burk’s Falls Country Jamboree. Peter Hall and Bob Gray were at the Tottenham Bluegrass Festival in 2011 when Bob looked at his friend and said those same words and got the go ahead reply ‘sure, why not’. Dreams are only the beginning and don’t come to reality without a lot of hard work and sacrifice. This is true of the Jamboree but both men agree that their love of music and sharing it with others makes it worthwhile. Now celebrating its 6th successful season, the Jamboree has become a regular destination for people from all over the province. Held at the village fair grounds, attendees have a place to park their campers, listen to the entertainers from under a canopy and enjoy a variety of foods served by local companies. The stage is easily visible to those who gather around their campsites or in the reserved area. Most of the musicians stay after their performance so fans can talk to them, get autographs and buy cd’s. The Jamboree is an easy mix of professionalism and relaxation and moves smoothly from one set to the next. There is an overall feeling

R

of a carefree group of friends gathered around a campfire singing songs from their youth. This lack of pomp and fuss is carried over to the purpose behind the event. The goal is to promote local talent, bring a quality event to the community and to support local charities. The Jamboree has made substantial donations to the Burk’s Falls Food Bank as well as other organizations. This generosity would be less surprising if the duo were financially benefiting from the Jamboree. Gray/Hall Productions raises funds to support the Jamboree by holding a monthly jam session. The Third Friday Coffee House takes place at the Burk’s Falls Legion and brings together talent from the Almaguin area as well as other communities as far away as Leamington and New Liskeard. The Coffee House is free and all patrons are asked to do for 3 hours of outstanding music is to make a small donation ($5 recommended). The Coffee House also benefits the Legion which sells meals and snacks.

he success of the Coffee House is evident from the number of performers who ask to be included and those who have gone on to make records and a promising career. Many of the performers also appear at the Jamboree. Coffee House regulars including Patty Crozier, James Gray, and Melody Tricco trade sets at the Jamboree with headliners such as the Good Brothers. Many well-known artists and those on their way to becoming so also appreciate the opportunity to strut their stuff. One of those artists is Naomi Bristow (www. naomibristow.com) whose talent and stage presence goes far beyond someone who is only in their mid teens. Her yodelling skill puts her on a par with other greats such as Jimmy Rodgers or Patsy Montana. Naomi was also excited to be at the Jamboree stating that, “it was a great honour to sing in the area that my Grandfather Ernie Dauncey was raised. He has been my biggest fan throughout

my music career and meeting some of his family and all the great people from Burk’s Falls was a thrill and privilege for me.” No event succeeds without the backing of others. Gray/Hall productions credit the unending volunteer hours of area residents as well as the artists for making the event possible. The men are quick to give special thanks to family members Jenny Hall, June Gray and sons Leonard and Dave who work at both the Jamboree and Coffee House . Financial assistance is very important and sponsorship by the village of Burk’s Falls and the Township of Armour as well as private individuals is greatly appreciated. The 2017 Burk’s Falls Country Jamboree will be held on August 18, 19, 20. Camping is available on the grounds and there is some limited space in a Bed and Breakfast. For more information, check out the Jamboree’s Facebook page.

A person can never go to too many festivals and another outstanding event taking place in the Almaguin Highlands is The Powassan Windsong Festival, featuring Juno winning artists the festival takes place at 509 Memorial Park Dr. The date for this year’s concert is Aug. 25, and 26. This year’s line up is available on their Facebook page.

Growing in popularity, Almaguin is a four season destination.

W

hen it comes to snowmobiling, the Almaguin Highlands offers some of the best trail networks in Ontario. You won’t be disappointed with the diversity of terrain traveled. Through the cooperation of local land owners, municipalities and provincial entities we are able to provide a great variety of trails. There is something different around each corner. Our trails travel through rugged forests, over lakes, rivers and creeks leading to the Villages throughout the Almaguin Highlands. Local businesses cater to and count on snowmobiling for revenue during the winter. You can find accommodation, food, fuel, repair, rentals and staging within reasonable distance of each other. We have large and small loops to choose from depending on whether you are looking to go riding for a few hours or overnight. There is something for everyone. These trail networks are marked and maintained by endless hours of volunteer work. Without club volunteers the trails would not exist. Almaguin Highlands is fortunate to have a good number of people willing to give back to their community through their volunteer time. Come enjoy everything Almaguin Highlands has to offer and be sure to bring your camera on your wilderness adventure to capture spectacular scenery and abundance of wild life. When you return home from riding here, it won’t be long before you are planning your next return trip.
