There is something inherently hopeful about January. As the calendar introduces a new year, it brings a sense of renewal and excitement. For many of us, this season is synonymous with "wellness." But true health isn’t about a new gym membership, and it’s most definitely not about a restrictive diet. It’s about overall well-being—a concept inclusive of body, mind, and spirit that considers our personal relationship to the planet.

Alison Bailin Batz, better known as @ABSeesItAll online, is a veteran public relations executive who began freelance writing as a hobby in 2007.

Today, she is a contributor on all things luxury travel, events, wine, food, and spirits for outlets across the Southwest. Alison’s aim in life is best summed up by her social handle, as “AB” truly does want to “see it all” and share it all with you.

This month, we explore well-being to help you harness the season's new energy. We look at the power of wellness in community, ways to nourish yourself with foods native to our Sonoran Desert home, and how to feel your best in conscious apparel. U.S. Delays Critical Methane Cuts The E.P.A. has delayed the requirement for oil and gas firms to curb methane emissions until January 2027.

EPA administrator Lee Zeldin justified the move by citing $750 million in saved compliance costs for oil and gas companies. Methane is a potent "super pollutant" which traps 80 times more heat in the atmosphere than CO2, making the delay a major blow to U.S. climate efforts.

Counseling, in this view, is not only about symptom reduction—it is about restoring relationship.

Prescott College is one of the few counseling programs in the United States that offers optional nature-based and adventure-based fieldwork intensives that take place “out there,” in diverse locations around the world. Recent intensives have included experiences in Kino Bay and Tampa, Florida. The Hard Truth Your Fitbit Won’t Tell You

As it turns out, the secret to health isn’t in your tracker — it’s with your neighbor.

The modern wellness industry has perfected the art of individual optimization. We track our steps, monitor our macros, and time our sleep cycles — all in isolation. But what if the most powerful health intervention is found in each other? Here’s a look at two innovative health programs proving that community connection isn’t just a nice addition to healthcare; it’s also medicine itself.

Dr. Benjamin Emmert-Aronson, co-founder and director of operations and Dr. Elizabeth Markle, co-founder and executive director, both at Open Source Wellness, coined the term "Community as Medicine." Their work, which is primarily focused on underserved communities, is driven by the idea of health equity.

“We saw early on that folks who are able to access systems and structures to help them make lifestyle changes necessary for good health — how we eat, how we move, how we handle stress, and how we connect meaningfully with others — had a shot at actually making those changes,” Emmert-Aronson says. “However, for those who didn’t have that same privilege, trying to make these changes in isolation, amidst the challenges of their daily lives, it was a prescription for failure. Working on goals together in community is vital to actually making changes in health and wellbeing.”

Open Source Wellness built what Emmert-Aronson describes as a Behavioral Pharmacy — a place where people can actually access the support they need to make lifestyle changes. But the innovation isn’t in the individual services. It’s in doing these activities together that makes all the difference.

The prescription looks like this: Paraprofessional health coaches lead two-hour Community as Medicine sessions that include 30 minutes of movement, five minutes of mindfulness, a health lesson, and 60 minutes of group coaching over a plant-based meal.

“Open Source Wellness was built to be a community where people make these changes together,” EmmertAronson says. “This is especially vital for folks who don’t have the ability or privilege to hire a health coach, take a Pilates class, or shop at Whole Foods.”

In research partnerships with Stanford University and the University of California San Francisco, participants experienced a 77% decline in emergency room visits, a 57% decrease in depression, and a 21-point drop in blood pressure. For Emmert-Aronson and Markle, these findings were deeply ironic — they are both psychologists, but they didn’t expect to see changes in depression or anxiety. “[The mental health improvements] have been some of our most consistent improvements to date,” Emmert-Aronson says.

Whether it’s full-service support, training and licensing, or consulting to help amplify the effectiveness of an existing program, Open Source Wellness works with organizations to deliver Community as Medicine.

“Our direct service work is almost exclusively through low-income Federally Qualified Health Centers,” Emmert-Aronson says. “In our training, we support YMCAs in running similar groups with clinics in their area. We also provide extensive technical assistance in partnering with clinics, funding their work sustainably, and collecting and analyzing outcomes and data. Meanwhile, Walk with a Doc is proving the same principle through radical simplicity. Started in 2005

by Dr. David Sabgir, a cardiologist in Columbus, Ohio, the program now has more than 644 chapters in 39 countries. The formula? Doctors invite patients to walk together in nature, share a brief health talk, and continue the conversation while moving.

Both programs represent a fundamental challenge to traditional wellness thinking.

Rachael Habash, chief operating officer, says the simplicity is precisely what made scale possible.

“We’ve learned that people are craving something uncomplicated and human: move your body; go outside; talk with a trusted healthcare provider; and meet neighbors,” she says.

With 71% of participants increasing their physical activity, Habash says that the magic is in the combination of nature and community.

“The traditional model says, ‘If you’re not healthy, you’re not trying hard enough,’” Habash says. “We reject that. People don’t need more guilt; they need more support. We create environments that make the healthy choice the easy and enjoyable choice.”

Emmert-Aronson also has experienced this firsthand through his years of communal living.

“When I lived in community, I found it so easy to be healthy,” he says. “In my last co-op, I cooked dinner for the house two nights a month, as did all of my housemates. When we make healthy decisions easy, people choose them naturally.”

Although community connection has been undervalued in American healthcare, the evidence for change is mounting. According to Habash, Walk with a Doc is solving a core problem in today’s modern world.

“Nature reduces stress and lifts mood, which makes people want to return,” she says. “Community adds accountability and joy — you’re not walking alone; you’re walking with friends.

Then there’s the physician’s presence. It’s subtle but powerful.”

“We solve disconnection: disconnection from our bodies, from nature, from our communities, and from our healthcare providers,” she says.

Clinicians, who typically face impossible time pressures, also are finding benefits in the program.

“Many clinicians tell us they feel disconnected from why they entered medicine in the first place,” Habash says. “At our walks, the hierarchy drops away and there is an opportunity to humanize healthcare. We consistently hear physicians say that leading walks reduces burnout and reminds them what healing is supposed to feel like.”

Meanwhile, Emmert-Aronson is seeing unprecedented momentum.

“We have never seen so much support for social prescribing, lifestyle medicine, or holistic care,” he says. “It is clear that how we are doing healthcare currently is not working, and more and more people are linking arms to help create something different.”

And instead of white coats, which carry authority but also intimidation, physicians wear sneakers and baseball caps to encourage approachability.

Based in Flagstaff, Arizona, Peak Scents is a woman-owned, small-batch skincare brand dedicated to clean, plant-based, and eco-conscious beauty. Founded in 1993 by herbalist DeeAnn Tracy, Peak Scents was born out of her need for highquality, natural products made from the gifts provided by the earth.

How Clothing Connects Body, Mind, and Planet

Most people know what it feels like to put something on only to experience an immediate shift in mood. A structured jacket helps us stand a little straighter and think a little clearer. Workout clothing inspires us to hit the gym. Fabrics that let us breathe soften the noise in our busy minds. Researchers define this phenomenon as enclothed cognition. Simply put, what we wear shapes our health, how we feel, and even how we think.

Research from the Institute of Medical Science at Banaras Hindu University examined the relationship between clothing and stress, confidence, and emotional regulation, finding that clothing becomes a daily expression of who we are and how we want to move through the world.

In the project “Garments as Healing Spaces” at the University of Texas, designer Maria Vidal Meinert treated clothing itself as a therapeutic environment, asking what garments could do when we think of

them as extensions of our emotional landscapes rather than mere objects. Meinert found that clothing can help us feel more grounded, more embodied, and more at ease in our daily lives.

Health concerns alone make it worth reexamining our connection to what we wear. A Yale University review by researchers Vivian Pinto and Meital Mizrachi points to growing concerns about dyes, PFAS coatings, and microplastics in everyday clothing. Many fast fashion garments rely on dyes that can break down

into harmful compounds, finishes that release irritants, and PFAS chemicals linked to hormonal disruptions and organ stress. Scientists have found that synthetic fabrics shed microplastics that can be inhaled or absorbed. Toxins in clothing are associated with recurrent cases of skin irritation, rashes, and textile-related allergies. Synthetic fabrics also tend to trap bacteria and odors, so they require hotter, more frequent washing to stay fresh.

Clothing also ties us to the Earth in ways we rarely pause to consider. Researcher, TEDx speaker, and board member with the Las Vegas Fashion Council, Jennifer Inaba views clothing as one of the most accessible places for people to reconnect with the natural world.

“Clothing becomes a kind of everyday extension of our relationship with nature,” she says. “It’s a tangible way for people to rediscover their connection to the Earth through something already in their lives.”

That emotional pull influences how people think about sustainability. It begins with small, everyday choices.

“Buying something labeled sustainable, wearing it once, and tossing it doesn’t make anyone more connected to the planet. But wearing a fast-fashion shirt fifty times, repairing it when it tears, and caring for it thoughtfully? That can actually be far more sustainable in practice,” she explains. “What matters more is how we care for what we already own.”

Understanding how garments are made also changes how people assign value. Inaba noted the importance of knowing a garment’s story.

“What people often don’t realize is that every garment they touch — whether it’s a cotton T-shirt or a polyester jacket — originates from the Earth,” she explains. “All fibers are either grown or extracted.

They’re part of our natural systems long before they ever reach a store.”

Social media is full of influencers who peddle cheap fashion. When clothing is unusually cheap, the real cost is typically shifted somewhere else. It may show up in low wages for workers, polluted waterways, or communities abroad managing the waste we send their way. Many donated garments never get reused. Instead, they are shipped overseas and accumulate as an environmental burden in places far from where they were worn.

Inaba’s research also reveals something remarkable about the clothing women keep the longest. People often describe their most loved garments with the same language they use for the places in nature that matter to them. Words like grounding, comfort, nostalgia, and even awe are used.

“When you know where a garment came from or whose hands made it, it adds depth and meaning to something that might otherwise feel disposable,” she says.

This is what researchers and designers call emotional durability — the understanding that when something feels meaningful, we are far more likely to keep it in our lives.

Looking ahead, the future of sustainable fashion may look more like the past. Clothing once lived many lives. It was mended, shared, worn often, and cared for.

The Gluten Gap Why some travelers may feel better eating gluten abroad

Recently, a friend told me she spent nearly two weeks in Italy enjoying bread, pizza, and pasta — foods she normally avoids because of her gluten sensitivity.

Yet on vacation, she felt great. None of her usual discomfort.

Many travelers report the same surprising experience.

These stories raise a compelling question: What’s different?

Could the explanation lie in grain quality, farming practices, or food preparation methods? Before exploring those theories, it helps to clarify the difference between gluten sensitivity and celiac disease.

GLUTEN SENSITIVITY VS. CELIAC DISEASE Celiac disease is a serious autoimmune disorder that, when triggered by gluten, causes damage to the small intestine, leading to long-term health consequences.

Even tiny amounts can trigger symptoms.

Non-celiac gluten sensitivity (NCGS) involves similar

symptoms — bloating, brain fog, and fatigue — but without the autoimmune response seen in celiac disease. The biological mechanisms remain unclear, and diagnosis is based largely on symptoms.

That uncertainty adds to the curiosity about why some people feel better eating gluten abroad.

WHY TRAVELERS OFTEN FEEL BETTER EATING GLUTEN ABROAD There appears to be no research specifically comparing how people react to U.S. versus European gluten, but several documented factors — combined with lived experience — may help explain why some travelers feel better eating wheat-based dishes abroad.

VACATION LIFESTYLE Stress, poor sleep, rushed meals, and sedentary habits can worsen digestion. Travelers often walk more, rest more, and experience less daily stress, all of which can support better gut function.

DIFFERENCES IN GRAINS, GROWING PRACTICES, AND PROCESSING Many chefs and bakers point to differences in grains and processing as a key explanation.

Chef Gio Osso, owner of Virtù Honest Craft and Pizzeria Virtù in Scottsdale, grew up spending summers in Italy and still returns regularly.

“There is a difference when eating bread and pasta in Italy,” he said. “The ‘bloat’ is not there and you don’t feel like a brick was just placed in your stomach.”

There is currently no scientific consensus in either the U.S. or the EU linking glyphosate exposure to gluten sensitivity or celiac disease.

However, in June 2025, glyphosate’s toxicity was confirmed in a comprehensive carcinogenicity study led by the Cesare Maltoni Cancer Research Center of the Ramazzini Institute, in collaboration with scientists from Europe and the U.S. Given these differences, many consumers — and chefs like Osso — prefer ingredients grown with fewer synthetic inputs.

PROCESSING & FERMENTATION: THE MISSING LINK? Even when the same grains are used, the preparation process matters.

He believes several factors contribute: Italy’s GMO restrictions, limited use of chemicals and pesticides like glyphosate, and the long fermentation process used in pizza and bread.

Traditional Italian bread and pizza doughs often undergo long fermentation — anywhere from 24–72 hours — which allows natural enzymes and yeasts to break down gluten and reduce fermentable carbohydrates known to cause digestive distress.

“These reasons are a big factor in why certain people with gluten sensitivity or even celiac can eat these dishes in Italy with slight reaction, if any,” he explained. “And when eaten here [in the U.S.], they suffer tremendously.”

“The fermentation process has a lot to do with making pizza, focaccia, pastries, and some breads easily digestible,” Osso explains. “That’s the goal — especially with Napoletana-style pizza.”

GRAIN QUALITY & FARMING PRACTICES ANCIENT VS. MODERN WHEAT Italy grows and uses more ancient and heritage grains, including farro (spelt) and Kamut, which tend to have lower gluten content and different gluten structures than modern, high-yield American wheat.

Osso explains, “In Southern Italy you are more likely to find ancient grains or heritage wheat varieties like farro... having lower gluten content and easier to digest, whereas modern wheat varieties have higher gluten content and were bred for mass production.”

In contrast, the U.S. relies largely on hard red winter wheat, bred for yield and protein content, resulting in higher gluten levels.

CHEMICAL AND PESTICIDE USE One widely discussed theory involves glyphosate, a commonly used herbicide in U.S. conventional farming.

The European Union maintains stricter regulations on glyphosate and limits pre-harvest glyphosate use, and Italy also restricts GMO crop cultivation.

In contrast, many commercial breads in the U.S. rely on rapid-rise methods, dough conditioners, or shorter fermentation windows that leave more complex gluten structures intact.

SO WHAT’S REALLY GOING ON? Many factors — wheat variety, farming practices, fermentation, and even stress levels — may explain why some people feel better eating gluten abroad. But there doesn’t appear to be a single cause for everyone.

When crafting his own menus, Osso considers these factors when selecting the flour.

“I specifically use an imported brand from Italy called Caputo,” he said. “They are the industry standard when it comes to Napoletana pizza… consistent, clean, and perfect for any application I need.”

THE BOTTOM LINE The rise in gluten sensitivity is real, and the better experience many travelers have with gluten-based foods in Europe is equally genuine. Choosing higherquality grains, minimally processed flours, and doughs with longer fermentation periods may offer similar benefits at home.

A Breath of Change How aromatherapy supports habit-building and everyday well-being

Each new year, many of us try to reshape our routines. We set intentions, buy planners, join gyms, and hope this time our new habits will stick. But change often comes from smaller, more mindful shifts. According to Scottsdale-based clinical aromatherapist Jessica Wiehle, one of those shifts can be as simple as pausing for a steady, intentional breath of a natural scent.

“Our sense of smell has direct access to the emotional centers of the brain,” she said. “When you inhale an essential oil, the aroma reaches the limbic system, which plays a role in memory, emotion, and habit formation.”

For someone wanting to make exercise feel more approachable, she often recommends choosing a consistent scent to use right before a workout. Rosemary, for example, is traditionally linked with clarity and alertness.

It is this same part of the brain that reacts when a familiar scent brings a rush of comfort or nostalgia. Aromatherapy taps into that built-in responsiveness.

“After a few sessions, many people say the aroma becomes their signal that it’s time to move,” she said.

THE POWER OF PLANT AROMAS

Wiehle, founder of AromaWell, has spent more than a decade teaching people how scent can support routines, mindset, and daily well-being. What she finds intriguing is how pairing specific aromas with new habits can help create cues the brain begins to associate with motivation, focus, or calm.

HABIT-BUILDING THROUGH SCENT “Pairing a specific scent with a behavior creates a type of mental association,” Wiehle explained. “Your brain starts to link the aroma with the action, which can make it easier to get into the right headspace.”

She compares it to classical conditioning, but centered on mindful breathing and the natural complexity of plant aromas.

Essential oils are more than simple fragrances. Pure plant oils contain naturally occurring aromatic compounds that give each plant its scent profile. A single oil may contain dozens or even hundreds of these compounds, which helps explain why certain aromas feel uplifting, grounding, or soothing.

“Think of essential oils as nature’s little messengers,” Wiehle said. “Your body isn’t responding to one note. It’s responding to an entire aromatic blend.”

She recalls a client who began using peppermint during focused work sessions. What started as a refreshing scent later became a concentration cue, simply because her mind began linking the aroma with productivity.

SMELL AND THE BRAIN Smell is closely tied to emotion and memory. When someone inhales an essential oil, their olfactory system sends information to areas of the brain connected to emotional response and attention. This can help people feel more settled, uplifted, or mentally engaged, depending on the aroma they choose.

“Different scents can help people shift their mindset or create a certain atmosphere,” Wiehle said.

“Aromatherapy isn’t about treating anything. It’s simply a supportive part of a daily routine.”

CREATING SIMPLE RITUALS Aromatherapy often works best when used in small, consistent rituals.

Morning routines may include placing a drop or two of oil on a cotton ball and taking slow breaths while setting an intention for the day. Citrus oils are often used for an energizing start, while woods and resins can help create a grounded tone.

“There is a lot of contradictory information online,” she said. “Good resources help you understand how to use oils safely.”

REAL-LIFE SHIFTS Many of the stories Wiehle shares are about atmosphere, comfort, and emotional ease. In one memory care community, staff introduced a calming aromatic routine in the late afternoons, which often felt busy and difficult.

After adding a consistent scent during transitions, caregivers said the energy of the space felt smoother and residents appeared more at ease.

During the day, a small inhaler tucked into a bag or desk can offer a quick aromatic pause before meetings or during busy stretches.

Evenings can be shaped by diffusing peaceful aromas 15 to 20 minutes before bedtime to help create a more calming environment. Many people find that repeating the same scent nightly makes their evening routine feel more settled and intentional.

“Your body starts to recognize these cues,” Wiehle said. “People often describe feeling more centered and prepared for whatever comes next.”

“Sometimes a small sensory cue can shape the tone of a moment,” Wiehle said. “It was meaningful for the staff to see that difference.”

USING OILS WISELY

A SIMPLE WAY TO SLOW DOWN

Choosing high-quality oils is important. The most common mistake beginners make is using synthetic or artificially scented products, which may smell pleasant but do not offer the same complexity as pure plant oils. True essential oils should clearly list plant origins and ingredients.

In a world filled with noise and urgency, aromatherapy offers a reminder to come back to the breath. It invites people to pause, even for a few seconds.

Using too much can also be overwhelming. One or two drops are often enough. Oils applied to the

Human Design is often described as a modern tool for self-understanding — but for many, it feels more like a revelation. A synthesis of astrology, the I Ching, Kabbalah, the chakra system, and quantum physics, Human Design shows us how we are energetically wired to exist in the world. Rather than telling you who to become, it offers insight into who you already are — before conditioning, expectations, and societal pressure take hold.

Jenna Zoë, a leading expert in the space, frames Human Design as a process of deconditioning — “not becoming anything, but about unbecoming everything you were told to be in the first place.”

Human Design is a blueprint of your energetic makeup that, like astrology, is calculated using your birth date, time, and location. The practice incorporates information from your natal chart to define activations within your personal Human Design chart, often called a BodyGraph.

In her book “Human Design: The Revolutionary System That Shows You Who You Came Here to Be,” Zoë writes, “...every place and time has an energy. Your soul chooses the exact energy it needs as the perfect launchpad for your life — so your birth information tells us about who you inherently are.”

Certified through the International School of Human Design, Chandler-based Klaire Long is a professional Human Design analyst that describes the practice as “astrology on steroids.”

“It’s like a blueprint or a floor plan of who you are — how you move through the world, giving and receiving energy from people and their environments,” she says.

A BLUEPRINT FOR ENERGY, NOT PERSONALITY Unlike personality tests that categorize behavior, Human Design focuses on energy mechanics. Your Human Design chart — composed of all seven major chakras plus centers identified for the spleen (intuition and awareness) and G Center (sense of self ) — illustrates defined and open energy centers, channels, and gates. These indicate where your energy is consistent and where you are more sensitive to external influence. Open centers, Long notes, are

“They’re your vulnerable soft spots,” she says.

THE FIVE ENERGY TYPES Perhaps the most foundational element of Human Design is your energy type, which determines the way you’re meant to operate in the world, right down to “your energy levels, energy patterns, and your ways of doing, resting, and most importantly — where and how your energy reaps the most rewards and returns,” writes Zoë.

There are five energy types: Generators and Manifesting Generators are the creators and builders, here to respond to life and sustain energy through satisfaction; Manifestors are initiators, designed to start projects and create movement for others to follow; Projectors are guides with a gift of seeing things in a way others cannot, here to offer insight when invited; and Reflectors, the rarest energy type, mirror their environments and reflect the status of the collective.

“If only every employer knew this stuff,” Long says.

An entrepreneur and business owner, Long describes managing teams differently once she understood their designs — giving Projectors shorter, more efficient shifts because they need more rest, providing structure for Manifesting Generators to keep them focused, and allowing Generators more creative freedom.

STRATEGY AND AUTHORITY Zoë notes that if you only focused on following your personal Strategy and Authority in your Human Design, everything else would fall into place.

Strategy teaches you how to engage with life based on your energy type. Whether that’s finding the courage to openly share your ideas as a Manifestor, responding to what you want as a Generator or Manifesting Generator, following intuitive nudges from the Universe as a Reflector, or if you’re like me, learning to wait for the invitation to guide someone or something as a Projector.

Authority, meanwhile, is about how you make decisions correctly for you — through emotional clarity, gut response, intuition, talking things out, discerning between your thinking mind and sensing mind, or patiently waiting for an answer from the Universe.

This side of my profile also comes with a deep, conscious need for privacy, peace, and rest for rejuvenation — which often leads to 2’s being labeled as hermits.

This need for personal space and introspection is directly juxtaposed by the 4 in my profile that says my external vibration invites interaction with others, and that I’m naturally wired to connect with people.

The trick to balancing this push/pull dynamic, Long tells me, is to feel into the people and relationships that request my time or talent to determine which of those feel energetically aligned.

FINDING ALIGNMENT Long stresses that Human Design isn’t meant to replace lived experience — or become an excuse to avoid necessary parts of living a human existence.

YOUR PROFILE According to Zoë, “Your profile describes your personality,” and it’s represented by two numbers — the first being how you describe your inner self, and the second as how others see you. The numbers are 1-6, with 12 possible inner and outer self combinations.

Zoë writes, “The way you see you and the way others see you is always different — and there’s nothing wrong or unusual about that.” She continues, “It serves us to have our own internal world that’s not so obvious to others, and an external side of us for the physical world.”

“You can’t say, ‘My design says I don’t like this, so I won’t do it.’ That’s not alignment — that’s avoidance,” she laughs.

Your profile acts as a filter for your Strategy and Authority and can often explain the contradictions we feel within ourselves.

As an example, I myself embody a 2/4 profile — a classic dichotomy referred to as The Natural/The Opportunist. The 2 in my profile says that I have natural abilities that I often don’t know how to explain.

NOPALES: A FAMILIAR PLANT WITH UNFAMILIAR STRENGTH The prickly pear cactus is one of the most familiar sights in the Sonoran Desert, and its pads, called nopales, have been part of Indigenous and Mexican cooking for generations. Available in many produce sections, their bright, clean flavor pairs well with salads, sautés, stews, and even smoothies. They are both versatile and rich in nutrients.

According to Barbie Cervoni, a New York-based registered dietitian and certified diabetes care and education specialist, the hydration-supporting cactus pads can play a meaningful role in supporting blood sugar balance. They contain soluble fiber that

slows carbohydrate absorption and helps the body avoid sharp spikes in glucose. Cervoni describes how nopales can support heart health due to their antioxidant content and naturally low-calorie content.

Ingredients 1 small sweet potato 1 medium red beet, peeled 1 medium parsnip 1 medium butternut squash 1 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil Kosher salt, to taste 1 teaspoon fresh Italian flat-leaf parsley, chopped (for garnish) Directions Preheat oven to 375°F. Peel & slice all vegetables into ¼-inch thick slices using a mandoline or sharp knife. Toss vegetables with olive oil and salt. Lightly oil a 9 x 9-inch baking dish (or similar size), and arrange vegetable slices in a spiral or overlapping stack. Cover with foil and roast for 30 to 35 minutes.

Remove foil and roast for an additional 10 to 15 minutes, until edges are crisp and vegetables are tender.

Water, Water Everywhere Gilbert-based Aquadei is on a mission to use all-natural technology to create safer, high-quality water

I

In most pools, chlorine is used to disinfect the water and kill germs.

But chlorine is also highly toxic, and it’s not the only option available.

Michael Geyer, CEO of Aquadei, and Mike Low, vice president of business development, are on a mission to use bubble technology to help naturally disinfect pools, use fewer chemicals to treat the water, and ultimately create safer, healthier water.

“All the elements that we utilize are all natural,” says Geyer.

Bathers loved it,” says Geyer. “So, from that point, we just took it and ran with it.”

THE HISTORY

The company started out creating systems just for commercial pools but then eventually started working on residential pools, too.

Prior to launching Gilbert-based Aquadei (meaning “God’s water” and pronounced “aqua-day”), Geyer had been in the commercial pool industry since 2005.

“We were always very much into improving water quality in general. That was our main focus,” he says.

The company was born from an experience Geyer had with a doctor who introduced him to a product that used ultra fine bubble technology to clean the water. Geyer tried the product and was happy with how it worked.

“It showed really favorable results with water quality.

It cleaned the water. It actually looks super clear.

“My whole goal was to try and reduce chemicals as much as possible, to have clean water without all [this] excessive use of chemicals just being thrown in the pool all the time, which were highly unhealthy,” says Geyer.

HOW THE TECHNOLOGY WORKS Aquadei’s bubble technology reduces chlorine usage by 30% to 50% in commercial pools, which are defined as pools that are 250,000 gallons and larger.

In residential pools, it’s about 20% to 30% less.

How does it do this? By utilizing oxygen and ozone to purify the water.

“That is used for oxidation and disinfection purposes.

Ozone is typically anywhere from 20 to 3,000 times stronger than chlorine is. So, it essentially is going to annihilate anything that's in the water,” says Mike Low. To control the pH of the water, the technology uses CO2 or carbon dioxide. The same carbon dioxide is used to create fizz and bubbles in a can of Coke.

“What we're doing is, we're utilizing natural elements: oxygen, ozone, and CO2, and that's why we're able to get the benefits of, in the commercial environment, far less chemical use,” says Low. “[The] clarity of water is amazing. It's unlike anything that we've ever seen.”

But Aquadei’s reach extends far beyond backyard pools. Many customers have reached out because their children have skin conditions like eczema or allergies and are searching for an alternative to chemical-laced pool water. And as health and wellness of its customers is one of the company’s primary goals, Aquadei also makes wound-care water that’s infused with minerals.

The feel of the water is also softer than in pools treated with chlorinated water.

“We get that soft feel.

It's like salt water but better, actually.

It doesn't leave the bather running to the shower like you do in most chlorinated commercial pools,” says Low. Locally, the Revel Surf Park at Cannon Beach in Mesa and all of the City of Scottsdale pools use this technology.

ECO-FRIENDLY ASPECTS OF CLEANER WATER In a residential environment — which is roughly 60% to 65% of the business — pool water typically can’t be reused since it’s full of chemicals. But when the water is treated using Aquadei’s technology, it can be.

“We can take that same pool water in a backyard environment and feed our plants and our grass, our

She Said: I guess it was only a matter of time until spas just for heads opened up. I mean, we have them for feet, hands, full body, dogs.... Never been to that last one, but I hear the snacks are good.

Anyhoo, the head spa was quite different than I expected. By the looks of those half-circle water things, I figured this would be all relaxation, massage, and luxurious hair products that smelled like coconuts. Well, kinda. Keep in mind, every spa you go to will be slightly different based on the esthetician that you get, but this one applied different oils, creams, and foam products into my hair, massaging them into the scalp and then rinsing them off. The best part was the waterfall device coupled with a little rotating massaging tool. It was very soothing, and honestly, I would have been peachy if that lasted the whole 60 minutes! Sadly, it felt like only a couple minutes long. After that, there was a steam infusion from a plastic hood haloed around my head. Probably the closest to feeling like an astronaut that I'll ever get. I did feel a little claustrophobic, but once the neck, shoulder, arm, and hand massage began, I didn't mind getting choked by the steam session as much. Part of this session also included a scalp analysis before the session, which took pictures of my scalp in four places.

After it was all done, I could see how things improved. Luckily, my scalp was in good condition. I really don't use many products, so there wasn't any buildup, but the pics did show a little bit of inflammation. That actually improved after the treatment! A word of advice: Don't plan on going anywhere afterward, because your hair will be a floofy mess. Or, bring a hat.

What Happens When You Put Your Scalp Under a Microscope Our day at the head spa It's a new year! And whether that means a new you, or just a new number you keep forgetting to write on forms and checks, it seems to be a good time to reset. How about starting with some well-deserved self-care? Ever heard of a head spa (or scalp spa)? Head spas have only been around for about five years and originated in Korea. The purpose is to detox the scalp from products and build-up and resolve conditions like dandruff or inflammation, but also for relaxation. The massage also encourages blood flow to the scalp, which can help with hair regrowth. It sounded great to us, and we had to check it out!

He Said: I had no idea what a head spa was and, let's be honest, neither did you. The difference between you and me is, I didn't know what it was when we booked the appointment. I didn't even know what it was when I walked through the door of the salon. I started getting concerned when I walked into the massage room and saw microscopes, giant water jugs, and a massage table with a sink at one end that was full of tubes and water sprayers, and a head rest. I think my words were, "Uhhh, what exactly are we doing here today?" because it looked like I was about to get waterboarded. The therapist explained that we were about to do a Korean scalp massage. She went on to explain how most people forget that we have skin under our hair, and that skin gets build up and irritation just like our faces. Step one: She put me under the microscope, literally. I got a magnified view of my scalp that really highlighted all my poor scalp-related life choices.

Next was an exfoliating scrub that I'm pretty sure unlocked a few forgotten childhood memories. I had a cat named Jasper when I was five! She put a large plastic hood over my head which pumped hot lavender-scented steam all over my cranium for step three. Steps four through seven were all a blur of cleansing shampoos, deep conditioners, neck and shoulder rubs, and rinses. These reviews are a tough life, but somebody has to do it.

I walked out feeling like a relaxed Fabio, with my luscious locks swaying in the breeze. My hair never felt softer. The therapist said I should do this about twice a year, but I might do it more often than that, just for fun.
