COMMUNICATION—

Proving Your Customer’s Investment Is Worth It It’s so important to make a positive lasting impression on each client and make every point of contact count.

T

he green industry is unique in that, while there is a low barrier to entry, there’s fast turnover, meaning not every business is going to outlast the competition. Therefore, it’s important to make a positive lasting impression on each client and make every point of contact count. Do you seize the opportunity to communicate with and educate customers about the value of your services? For example, landscaping can drastically increase the value of a home. An article entitled “Outdoor Living Is All the Rage and Here’s Why” says, “Any cost to enhance outdoor living is well worth it: • An overall landscape upgrade (installing flowering shrubs and trees, and mulching with landscaping bark) will recover 83 percent of the project cost. • Standard lawn care service (something 55 percent of realtors have suggested to sellers) will recover 267 percent of its cost. • Tree care, including trimming and pruning, will result in a 100 percent value recovered from the project. • Sellers can expect to recoup 80 percent of the project cost for adding a wood deck. • A new patio offers a 69 percent return.” These statistics seem arbitrary without context, but would translating this kind of knowledge for customers be an effective strategy to boost business? Then again, some home or business owners could be interested in more than their return on investment. Sometimes, you have to appeal to more than just their wallets. Do you take the opportunity to tell your customers about the many benefits of the green industry, for instance? Landscaping can improve the health of families, the environment and the economy. According to a National Initiative for Consumer Horticulture report (check out the interactive infographic at www.greenindustrypros.com/12333754), plants benefit society in many ways: • Stores with landscaped areas have expanded sales resulting from longer shopping occasions and can charge more due to higher perceived quality. • Trails and greenways increase property values and make adjacent homes sell faster. • Shaded roadways save 60 percent of repaving costs. • Office plants reduce employee sick time by 14 percent. • Trees improve driver safety and result in fewer traffic accidents. Whether it’s increasing curb appeal or helping save the environment, customers want to know how their investment in you goes beyond their backyard. Give them a chance to appreciate what Carrie Mantey (920) 542-1238 you bring to the world, while feeling good about cmantey@acbusinessmedia.com spending their hard-earned dollars.

Small Business Owners Say They’re Better Prepared for a Recession U.S. small business owners are less optimistic about business conditions now than they have been over the past year, according to the Wells Fargo/Gallup Small Business Index, which measures small business owners' attitudes about factors affecting their businesses. Despite the slight decline in overall optimism, when asked to think more broadly about the economy, two-thirds of small business owners say 2019 will be a year of economic prosperity rather than economic difficulty. Asked what lessons they learned from the experience of living through the previous recession, owners were most likely to say they were more careful and more frugal with their businesses in terms of spending and credit (19 percent). Other owners cited the need to build up savings or capital in reserve (12 percent), anticipatory planning should a recession materialize again (9 percent), and keeping the business viable by focusing on growth, customer service and staying competitive (8 percent).

owner are more prepared for recessions today. Gallup found owners are generally optimistic about their ability to weather new economic problems. More than three-quarters of owners (77 percent) reported being either very (25 percent) or somewhat (52 percent) prepared to handle a downturn. Nearly seven in 10 owners reported owning their business 10 years ago during the recession. Among this group, 75 percent said they were better prepared if an economic downturn occurs now than they were over 10 years ago.

Mean Green Products, a manufacturer of commercial electric mowers, recently announced that it was awarded a contract and is now part of the South Coast Air Quality Management District (SCAQMD) Commercial Electric Lawn and Garden Exchange Program. Unlike most residential programs for small household electric mowers, commercial gardeners and landscapers, school districts, colleges, local government agencies and nonprofit agencies are now eligible for this program. Participants must scrap one equivalent operable gasoline- or diesel-powered mower. The SCAQMD has $2.5 million in incentive funds for this program. Participants can receive a discount of up to 50 percent off the commercial electric equipment standard pricing, which immediately makes them less expensive than most traditional internal combustion engine mowers. With zero emissions, low noise, low maintenance and zero fuel to purchase, new owners can help save the environment and save up to $30,000 in operating costs over the service life of the mowers compared to traditional gas mowers. “We’re proud to be a partner with the SCAQMD to implement our latest zeroemission mowers to the Los Angeles basin,” said Joe Conrad, president of Mean

Green. “Our all-electric zero-turn mowers with all-day runtimes have been mowing city parks, universities, resorts and homes around the country for years. With recent California Air Resources Board (CARB) findings that outdoor power equipment air emissions will exceed all automobile emissions in California during 2019, it is exciting to have been chosen to help greatly reduce air pollution in this area and help the SCAQMD reach air emission goals.” “We have designed our commercial electric mowers to withstand all the punishment typically seen on commercial equipment,” touted Matt Conrad, vice president of engineering. “Our patented zero-turn mowers now have power that exceeds most traditional commercial mowers and the lithium battery capacity to get contractors through an entire day of mowing.” This program is funded through the SCAQMD’s Air Quality Investment Program and the Environmental Protection Agency Targeted Air Shed Grant. The SCAQMD is the air pollution control agency for Orange County, and major portions of Los Angeles, San Bernardino and Riverside counties. CONTINUED GROWTH LEADS TO NEW OPPORTUNITIES AT GIE+EXPO 2019 Building on last year's record-breaking event, plans for an even bigger show are in the works for the Green Industry & Equipment Expo (GIE+EXPO) 2019. Expanded show hours and new education opportunities, combined with strong exhibit sales, are early indicators that the national outdoor living and equipment expo is another for the record books. The industry's largest annual event is set for October 16 through 18 at the Kentucky Exposition Center in Louisville. NEW SHOW HOURS The indoor show floor will open an hour earlier for dealers, retailers and the media on Wednesday, October 16. And both indoor exhibits and the 20-acre outdoor demonstration area will open earlier for the entire industry on Friday, October 18. EXPANDED EDUCATION FOR LAWN AND LANDSCAPE PROS GIE+EXPO workshops for lawn and landscape professionals are expanding with two new opportunities on Wednesday, October 16. The Irrigation Association will host Secrets of a Successful Irrigation Business, a panel discussion featuring irrigation contractors, landscape professionals and manufacturers, while the National Association of Landscape Professionals (NALP)will present a session on snow and ice management. These workshops will run simultaneously from 12:30 to 1:45 p.m., immediately before the opening keynote. "The Irrigation Association is excited to be a more formal participant in GIE+EXPO's education program this year," said Irrigation Association CEO Deborah Hamlin. "Someone said to me recently, 'There are probably more landscapers out there dabbling in irrigation than there are irrigation contractors.' Most landscapers come into contact with irrigation systems, whether they are responsible for them or not. We would like anyone touching an irrigation system to do it right. Water is a precious resource, and we can't be wasting it with broken or poorly maintained systems." NEW SESSION ON THE ECONOMY ON FRIDAY A special event on Friday, October 18 will feature noted industry economist Brian Beaulieu. Beaulieu, the CEO of ITR Economics, will discuss the state of the economy and outdoor power equipment industry, and provide strategic action items that can directly impact attendees' businesses. This session, set for 9:30 a.m., is open to all attendees and included with trade show registration. "GIE+ EXPO is the place to be if you're in this business and our new economy keynote session is another example of the type of business education that attendees can get here at the show," said Kris Kiser, managing partner of GIE+EXPO and Outdoor Power Equipment Institute (OPEI) president. "Brian is an expert in delivering econometric and industry data in a way that everyone can understand, and [the keynote] is designed to help attendees develop better business plans based on sound economics." EXHIBIT SALES According to show director Warren Sellers, the show posted its strongest ever sales week in January and overall sales are running well ahead of this time last year. The last week of January is typically a leading indicator for the size and scope of the October trade show, and based on current numbers, the 2019 event is expected to showcase more than 1,000 exhibitors. GIE+EXPO is sponsored by the OPEI, Professional Grounds Management Society (PGMS) and NALP. For more information and online registration, please visit www.gie-expo.com.

PLANTING SEEDS FOR FUTURE STUDENTS WITH THE DAN COLLINS SCHOLARSHIP NaturaLawn of America recently announced the Dan Collins Scholarship Award in memory of Dan Collins, a past franchise owner who passed away from cancer in 2005. Headquartered in Frederick, Maryland, NaturaLawn of America is a national franchise with 90 locations, servicing over 100,000 customers in 24 states and the District of Columbia. Collins was a larger-than-life gentleman who always had a funny story to share, an encouraging word for his fellow owners and a big heart for giving his best to help others. His efforts in promoting NaturaLawn and his franchise in the Richmond, Virginia area can be summed up by a simple five-word question, which he was so fond of saying: Can I get you started? In honor of Collins, the NaturaLawn of America franchise system created the scholarship to help students with the cost of higher education. The scholarship currently provides a one-time $4,000 stipend to the winning student to be used toward his or her college education. The award is open to high school seniors or full-time undergrads. To enter, students are required to submit two essays, along with proof of enrollment in a high school, or a college or university. Application submissions to the Dan Collins Scholarship Award (including all essays, letters of recommendation, transcripts, etc.) should be postmarked no later than April 30 for this year's award. In addition to the completed application and a possible interview with NaturaLawn of America management, the following criteria are considered during the decision process: • Whether the applicant is a current high school senior, or enrolled as a full-time student in a two-year associate degree or four-year bachelor degree college/university program. • A transcript showing a high school or current college/university grade point average (GPA) of at least 2.5. • A one-page essay explaining why the applicant should receive this award. • A one-page essay recounting how the applicant may use the degree and knowledge gained from his or her education. • Up to three letters of recommendation. • Whether the applicant is a NaturaLawn employee's child. • Whether the student is enrolled in or has experience in the field of turf-grass management. Toro’s TXL 2000 features a unique telescoping arm. When fully telescoped and raised, it can reach 123 inches high—plenty of clearance to dump materials over a standard dump truck.

Getting Attached to Your Attachments

A variety of hydraulic attachments is what really makes a track loader indispensable for hardscape contractors. “A must-have attachment is definitely a bucket,” Cartwright says. “There are different types for different volume and grading requirements. A high-volume bucket is ideal for hauling loose material, such as mulch, gravel or dirt. A hardscape contractor would also need a good set of forks to haul pallets of pavers and other materials. And if forks don’t work, a grapple attachment could also be very useful.” Other hydraulic attachments, such as trenchers or augers, could also come into play when installing things like lighting. “For ground preparation, you’re looking at some kind of landscape power box rake, along with a tiller,” Cartwright adds. “Toro offers 35-plus attachments for its Dingo loaders.”

Getting on Track

What makes a compact track loader so productive in hardscaping?

BOUT HARDSCAPING? have no tread, making them especially effective on grass. You can do a full counter-rotation without creating any ground disturbance.” The Toro Dingo was first introduced years ago as a wheeled machine. Track models soon followed. Cartwright concurs that tracks are ideal for landscaping and hardscaping when minimal ground disturbance is essential.

Size and Speed Matter

At 48.3 inches wide, ASV’s RT-40 is slightly wider than the RT-25, but also provides roughly 40 percent more rated operating capacity, making it an ideal machine for hardscapers in need of something nimble on the job, but also capable of doing more lifting and hauling.

A track loader isn’t the only piece of heavy iron that can power a long list of productivity-enhancing attachments. Hardscape contractors could also invest in skid steers, wheel loaders or tractors. That said, there are a few reasons why track loaders are so popular for hardscaping. “The main reason compact track loaders are often a better machine is because of the flotation the tracks provide,” Boerger says. “This minimizes ground disturbance, and also allows operators to work effectively in soft, sandy, wet or muddy conditions.”

Storlie agrees, adding that ASV’s track loaders have ground pressures of 3 to 4 PSI. “That is really low compared to something like a wheel loader, skid steer or even mini skid steer,” Storlie says. ASV’s Posi-Track system is offered as standard on its machines. It’s an all-rubber design with 50/50 weight distribution for minimal disturbance. The company’s Turf Tracks option is ideal for landscaping and hardscaping. “Turf Tracks go on the same undercarriage, so they offer the same weight distribution, traction and pushing power,” Storlie says. “But Turf Tracks

Size is another factor that makes a compact track loader very useful in hardscaping. This is especially the case with a mini loader like the Dingo. The smaller footprint allows it to nimbly move into and around tighter properties. Trailering is also easier. Some of today’s sit-in track loaders can also handle tight quarters. Take ASV, for instance. “At roughly 48 inches wide, our RT-25 and RT-40 models are ideal for more confined areas like housing developments with narrow spacing and homes with gated backyards,” Storlie says. Contractors need to think about the types of properties they service, along with the types of work their track loaders do before reaching a purchasing decision. An optimal combination of size, speed and power is what is needed. “Sit-in track loaders provide faster ground speeds,” according to Storlie. This can be important on larger jobsites or when numerous material-hauling trips need to be made. ASV’s compact RT-25 sit-in track loader has a forward ground speed of 5.1 MPH, whereas the RT-40 can travel at 7.3 MPH. Bobcat’s T450 sit-in compact track loader can travel at 7.3 MPH and actually go as fast as 11 MPH with a two-speed option. Conversely, Bobcat’s MT85 mini loader travels much slower at 4.1 MPH. The newest Toro Dingo mini loader, the TXL 2000, helps close the

gap between sit-in models and mini loaders. It can travel at 5.4 MPH and has a rated operating capacity (ROC) of 2,000 pounds.

Track Loaders that Can Do the Heavy Lifting

How much lifting capacity do you need? ROC is an important specification to look at when determining how much loader you actually need for your hardscaping operation. “Working in hardscaping applications usually means lifting pallets of brick and other materials,” Boerger says. “Knowing the weights of the materials helps determine if a larger machine with a higher level of ROC and pushing force is needed, or if a smaller machine that can move in tight spaces is the better choice.” Cartwright mentions that, if a contractor is adding a mini loader to a fleet that already includes a sit-in loader, the contractor may not be in need of as much lifting and hauling power. On the other hand, if a contractor is looking for a mini loader to become the fleet’s workhorse, it may be best to lean toward something with a bit more capacity. What about the contractor with a landscaping crew that does a fair amount of hardscaping-based enhancements? “Machines oriented around a 1,000-pound ROC are often more economical and efficient,” Cartwright says. “Typically, those size machines are offered in a couple of track-width configurations. The Dingo offers two [track widths] in that ROC class: 34.1 inches wide and 41 inches with a bit more ROC and slightly lower PSI.” Storlie thinks about ASV’s RT-40 sit-in loader along those same lines: For the contractor doing a lot of smaller to mid-size residential projects like paver patios and water features, the RT-40 is an ideal match. He says, “It has a 931pound ROC so it can lift most things, but it’s also fast and compact for that quick in-and-out type of work.” Again, it’s all about an optimal blend of size, speed and power. Speaking

18 GREEN INDUSTRY PROS

of which, Storlie says contractors should also look at horsepower. “Maybe a certain machine can lift a certain load, but you may need a little more horsepower to operate a certain high-demand attachment, such as an auger, tiller or landscape rake,” he points out. On that note, contractors should also look at hydraulic flow—GPM—to ensure that attachments function properly.

Pushing Productivity, Durability and Serviceability Engineers continue to push the envelope to make compact track loaders as versatile and productive as possible. Toro’s TXL 2000 features a unique telescoping arm that combines the benefits of multiple machines into one. If the arm is not telescoped, it travels in a radial lift path. With the arm fully telescoped and raised, it can reach 123 inches high—plenty of clearance to dump materials over a standard dump truck. Additionally, when equipped with a set of forks, the TXL 2000 can reach across a flat-bed truck to unload from the far side, further enhancing jobsite productivity. Gains are also felt on the job. “In various conditions, a grading bucket can dig down about 45 inches below grade,” Cartwright explains. “It’s great for digging out water features and backfilling retaining walls because you don’t have to get so close to the edge.” Along with productivity, durability and serviceability are other things contractors should consider. Storlie says ASV engineers put a lot of effort into making sure filters are easy to access, pins have grease Zerks on the ends and drain plugs facilitate fluid changes. “Contractors should look at all of those things when comparing equipment,” he advises. With respect to track loaders, the undercarriage is also critical. In 2017, Bobcat introduced an exclusive 5-Link torsion suspension undercarriage on the T870 compact track loader. “The undercarriage provides durability with a 15 percent

APRIL 2019

At 48 inches wide, the RT-25 (shown here with optional Turf Tracks) is ASV’s most compact of compact track loaders.

increase in diameter to the drive shaft inside the gearbox and a continuously lubricated outer bearing in the drive motor,” Boerger says. “Furthermore, an additional fifth link on the rear axle stabilizes the undercarriage to increase machine stability and performance when grading, and provides enhanced ride quality for operators.” Bobcat 5-Link torsion suspension undercarriages are designed with a solid cast spindle mount for even more durability. This design eliminates welds and distributes stress across one seamless piece that has additional metal and strength precisely where it is needed most. “A new feature of the 5-Link torsion suspension undercarriage is an automatic hydraulic track-tensioning system,” Boerger declares. “No longer do operators need to manually adjust the compact track loader’s track tension with a grease gun. The hydraulic tensioning system automatically ensures the proper track tension, thereby increasing machine uptime.” The right compact track loader— one that optimizes uptime, speed, power and mobility—can be a hardscape contractor’s best friend. Plenty of sizes and styles are available, giving the contractor choices. By understanding the types of work they do, hardscape contractors can make the right choice purchasing a compact track or mini loader, and take their hardscaping operations to another level of productivity. All this ends up making contractors beg the question, “What’s so hard about hardscaping anyway?” ❯

SHAPING AN ARTIST Pool Crafters finds a unique solution for creating authentic rocks and waterfalls. By Arielle Windham

Pool Crafters provides finely detailed, high-quality pools to residents in the West Palm Beach, Florida area, specializing in vanishing-edge, 360-degree spillover deck-level pools, natural rock pools, water parks and entrance water features for high-end developments. This second-generation pool company was founded in 1962 by Charles D. Miller and is now operated by Rock Miller. Just like an artist with a paintbrush and canvas, the work Rock Miller, owner and president, does with concrete, sand and seashells to shape rocks and waterfalls takes passion and skill, and is nothing short of a masterpiece. But creating his masterpieces wasn’t always easy.

The Challenge

To apply material in detailed areas, Pool Crafters was using concrete piston pumps, which certainly sped up the process compared to the hand-packing method the company used in previous years. But over time, Miller realized it was no longer the best solution for shaping the rocks and waterfalls.

hour. The pools’ detailed work took time and Miller, now in his 60s, wanted to slow down the process so he could achieve highquality results as close to nature as possible.

The Solution

Rock Miller, owner of Pool Crafters, uses Blastcrete’s D6528 concrete squeeze pump attachment to pump just 5 or 6 yards of concrete per hour, allowing more time to shape rock waterfalls. This image shows the rock prior to painting.

While searching YouTube for an answer, Miller stumbled upon Blastcrete Equipment, an Alabama-based concrete-pumping equipment manufacturer. Miller and the manufacturer had many conversations about possible solutions, including a squeeze pump that offered a 0- to 12-yard-per-hour output. After Blastcrete dispelled the myth that a squeeze pump couldn’t handle the crushed limestone found in concrete in the South, Pool Crafters purchased the D6528.

The machine is a mixer and pump in one unit that Miller powers with his T550 Bobcat compact track loader. This setup minimizes operation costs and is more cost-effective than purchasing a stand-alone pumping unit.

The process starts with setting up rebar to extend every 6 inches from the Pool Crafters sought help from Blastcrete Equipment to pool’s beam. The Evolution of Wyscape Landscape Company

The landscaping company built a world-class hardscaping team after realizing there was an opportunity to meet client demand for hardscaping projects.

A

fter completing a bachelor’s degree in landscape horticulture and design from Auburn University, Landon Wise worked for his father’s construction company while developing his own business. By 2007, Wyscape LLC was in full swing. With six trucks and a range of 12 to 18 employees depending on the season, Wyscape services primarily Okaloosa County, Florida. Offering services such as landscape design, new installation, lawn renovation and maintenance, Wyscape has a customer base of 90 percent residential properties, and about 10 percent commercial or homeowner’s association properties. Wise began his company focused on

those services because of his familiarity with and love for those types of projects. “Quickly transforming someone’s yard into something they have always dreamed of is what made me happy and we were really good at it,” he laments.

Between a Rock and a Hardscape Place

As time passed, Wise noticed an increase in the popularity of hardscaping. Initially, Wyscape offered those services through subcontractors, but soon began to build its own hardscaping team. “We quickly realized that the only way to get the quality that we were after would be to build our own hardscape crew and have it as an inhouse service,” according to Wise. After

obtaining management certifications through the Interlocking Cement and Pavement Institute (ICPI) and training from industry leaders, Wyscape began offering its own hardscaping services. One hardscape project Wise fondly recalls was a renovation in Destin that required his crew to keep the “old Florida feel” with a manicured look. Wise and his crew used the Choctawhatchee Bay, majestic live oaks and palmettos as part of their inspiration. They replaced the driveway with a light faded paver to match the color blend of shell driveways seen in older areas of Florida and added stucco columns connected by a custom bronze gate at the entry to the driveway. “In addition, we installed sabal palms amongst the clumps of live oaks to add to the genuine Florida look we were after, and the rest of the planting areas were filled with silver saw palmettos, hydrangeas, camellias, azaleas and muhly grass,” Wise Wyscape offers an array of services that include hardscaping, landscape design, new installations, lawn renovation and maintenance.

“Quickly transforming someone’s yard into something they have always dreamed of is what made me happy and we were really good at it.” – Landon Wise, Wyscape LLC

Wyscape handles all sorts of hardscaping projects, but owner Landon Wise retains the same starting point for each: Meet with clients to determine their vision, needs and desires, then develop a budget within which to work. Next comes the fun part— landscape design.

remembers. “We finished off the open areas of the yard with St. Augustine grass, which tied it all together.” While the size and type of hardscape projects Wyscape handles vary, Wise’s approach and process doesn’t drastically differ from project to project. Wise begins by meeting with clients to determine their desires and needs, and of course, budget, before moving into design. When Wyscape first started, Wise drew all his designs by hand and some-

times he still indulges himself with the more manual design process. “This was really before landscape design software hit the market,” he notes. Although there is some reliance on design software to create a visual presentation for the client, Wise mentions that the majority of Wyscape designs are twodimensional, blueprint-style drawings. “We obtain the property survey in a computer-aided design (CAD) or portable document format (PDF) file, then we do onsite measurements to

locate additions, trees, pools and so on, but blueprints are the backbone and will always be the best option to use when building the project. There’s no substitute,” he emphasizes. While drawing up designs by hand was the method he learned at Auburn, Wise soon found it time-consuming. “It takes way too long and it’s not efficient at all, so I started to use PRO Landscape design software maybe 10 years ago and had to teach myself,” he says. This software also allows Wise to take photos of the client’s yard, and add three-dimensional images of plants, water features, walkways and retaining walls, so the clients can visualize how their design is going to come together. “The three-dimensional image editor really works best for us on smaller areas of the yard and clients love them,” Wise offers. “I have had several clients tear up when we present the three-dimensional image design. They are that real-looking.”

Adapting to Industry Change Along with adding hardscape services to its repertoire, Wyscape also made several changes to improve the company. Change came in the form of

Now we focus way more on our people and making Wyscape a place they want to work.” Through the hot summer and long days, Wise keeps employee morale up by offering company breakfasts,

we replace filters and spark plugs, we only have to buy one type of equipment. While Wyscape used to rely heavily on securing new business via word of mouth, Wise anticipates that he may soon be turning more toward social media platforms, such as Facebook and Instagram, as marketing tools. “We’ve been blessed to live off word of mouth and hit that niche with folks over the age of 65,” Wise admits. However, he is preparing for doing business with the next generation. Charging Forward

According to Wieland, the concept for the WL20e and 5055e electric wheel loaders is based on time-tested large-scale technology used in material-handling equipment. The company chose to use absorbent glass mat battery technology, which is common in forklifts. This closed and maintenance-free lead-acid battery system is specifically designed for high-demand applications. The weight of the battery provides the added benefit of serving as counterweight. An integrated onboard charging unit means end users are not required to rely on fixed charging stations on site. Instead, they can plug the machine into an outlet and recharge the battery whenever necessary. “This offers maximum flexibility at every site of [use],” says Wieland. The battery drives two electric motors on the loaders: one for the drive system and one for the working hydraulics. Power is automatically provided by the respective motor, which helps to minimize energy consumption. Wieland says designing the wheel loaders in this manner ensures low operating costs and optimal battery runtimes. With an electric motor built into the drive system, high performance and tractive force can be achieved. Meanwhile, the motor for the hydraulics system delivers only the amount of power required for the application at hand, reducing unnecessary power draw. “These motors are particularly energy efficient with degrees of efficiency from 94 to 97 percent,” explains Wieland.

Optimized for Efficiency

Efficiency is an important aspect of electric equipment. Last year, Volvo Construction Equipment presented field test results for its LX1 prototype electric hybrid wheel loader, which showed an average fuel efficiency improvement of 50 percent. It since introduced a second-generation prototype, the LX2. Like the LX1, the LX2 is part of a research project and is not commercially available. To make the machine electric, the combustion engine was replaced with a lithium-ion battery, which stores enough electric energy to operate the machine for eight hours in its most common applications, such as light infrastructure construction and landscaping. The LX2 also incorporates dedicated electric motors for the drivetrain and for the hydraulics. Decoupling

the subsystems led to higher efficiency in both the systems and the machine. “[The LX2] incorporates the latest advanced-chemistry battery technology. As it’s electric, no particulate matter, nitrogen oxide or carbon dioxide are released into the environment,” says Ulrich Faß, Volvo Construction Equipment emerging technologies manager. “This, together with the fact that it has extremely low noise levels, makes it ideal for use in cities and

densely populated areas.” While there are no direct plans to bring it to market, the LX2 provides a demonstration of potential capabilities for the future. “Volvo Construction Equipment has long-term plans to develop products and services for electromobility, including electric hybrids and electric sites,” says Scott Young, vice president of uptime and customer support for sales. Avant Tecno’s e6 electric loader features a 288-Ah (14.5-kWh) lithium-ion battery.

Construction Equipment believes there is going to be a major shift toward electric hybrid technology in the future, but end users continue to demand improved efficiency now. As such, the company plans to continue to optimize more conventional technologies, but expect to see elements of hybrid design incorporated into these products. “This supports short- and mid-term developments and requirements while the market continues to accept hybrid technology, as technology improves and the cost of new technologies decreases,” says Young.

Simplified Drive System

At the Green Industry & Equipment Expo (GIE+EXPO), Avant Tecno introduced

its e5 fully electric battery-powered articulated loader. The e5 features a 240-Ah (11.5-kWh) lead-acid battery and two electric motors: a 6-kW motor for driving the machine, and a 2-kW motor for loader boom operation and auxiliary hydraulics. Similar to the Wacker Neuson wheel loaders, the e5 comes equipped with an integrated battery charger for charging anywhere a 230-V/10-A power outlet is available. Operators can continue using the machine while it’s plugged in and charging. The battery is fully charged in approximately five hours, but is capable of reaching 80 percent capacity in three hours. The zero-emissions machine can be used indoors or outdoors. Avant Tecno also offers the e6 batterypowered loader, which uses a 288-Ah (14.5-kWh) lithium-ion battery with the option of a 400-V/16-A or 400-V/32-A rapid battery charger. The company says

The Volvo LX1 is a hybrid machine featuring electric-drive motors mounted on the wheels, electric-driven hydraulics, a smaller diesel engine and battery energy storage system.

Optidrive also enables a lot of pushing power in a compact design, while maintaining a low center of gravity. It improves performance of the eSeries models by as much as 10 percent, according to the company. the rapid charger considerably reduces charging time compared to the built-in charger on the e5; a 100 percent charge can be achieved within one hour. The typical drive system in the company’s loaders consists of a variable-displacement hydraulic pump, four hydraulic drive motors (one on each wheel), and a combination of hydraulic valves, hoses and fittings. The eSeries loaders feature the Optidrive drive circuit, an updated version of this drive system. Hydraulic oil is used to provide drive power from the machine’s 6-kW electric motor to the four hydraulic drive motors. Fewer hydraulic hoses and

More Electrics Ahead

fittings reduce the amount of heat generated when hydraulic oil flows through, and thus reduces fuel consumption and power draw from other componentry. Avant Tecno says there are 20 percent fewer hoses and 60 percent fewer fittings. Reducing the number of hydraulic components enables Optidrive to reduce power loss by up to 1.5 kW, roughly 10 percent of the total power used in the drive circuit. It also helps improve maintenance as there are fewer components that may need fixing or which could prohibit accessibility to other parts of the machine.

Emissions reduction and improved efficiency are going to continue to be key drivers for equipment design for years to come. With more manufacturers applying electrification technologies to more types of equipment, there are going to be further options available for end users to get their work done while complying with evolving environmental requirements. ❯

Adopting safe practices is the key to keeping your team happy and healthy.

SAFETY MATTERS:

Preventing Injury and Safeguarding the Bottom Line

You can safeguard your crew—and your bottom line—from injury by implementing these four best practices.

Y

our employees are the most important part of your business. As a landscape contractor committed to success in the green industry, your number one goal should always be to send employees home safely after a day’s work. Adopting safe practices is the key to keeping your team happy and healthy. While safety has always been an important topic in the green industry, more contractors than ever before are prioritizing their employees’ wellbeing. Primarily, it’s because they understand that it’s the right thing to do. But there’s a secondary reason as well; in today’s competitive labor market, workers who do not feel safe or valued can easily leave for another employer. In addition, injured employees need time off work and costly medical care. Labor shortages and employee injuries jeopardize your profit margins, your project quality and completion dates, and your reputation. By taking excellent care of your employees, you can safeguard your crew—and your bottom line—from injury. There are proactive steps you can take to keep your employees safe. By establishing a safety program,

32 GREEN INDUSTRY PROS

adopting safety technology and matching equipment to the task being performed, you can help ensure that your employees go home in the same healthy condition they arrived.

Establish a Safety Program

It’s challenging to manage workers’ safety when they’re scattered across different jobsites. Establishing a safety program helps employees follow safety practices no matter where they go. While safety programs look different for every company depending on their size, line of business and other factors, they can each contain the same basic criteria. First, provide detailed trainings on the types of equipment and chemicals your employees are working with and around. Part of this training should include clear instructions on exactly how and when workers should wear personal protective equipment (PPE). Second, assign someone on every team to be responsible for safety. This person is the go-to source for safety issues on that site and makes sure nothing falls between the cracks. This person can help ensure that other workers wear the appropriate PPE, use

APRIL 2019

equipment and chemicals safely, and complete safety paperwork if applicable. This safety champion can also complete the jobsite checklist. When starting on a new job, the worker responsible for safety should do a jobsite review with the rest of the crew. By walking through a comprehensive checklist, the entire crew can become aware of hazards that may be unique to that site. For example, your checklist may include underground and overhead powerlines, underground tanks, gas lines, steep slopes, cliffs or unsafe Require your workers to buckle up and drive safely in every vehicle, no matter if it’s a truck or a forklift.

edges. Make sure your jobsite checklist includes anything workers may encounter that could cause injury. Another part of any safety program should be encouraging associates to report site-related hazards or unsafe practices. Establish an open-door policy for workers to speak to you about safety. You may even consider adopting an incentive program that rewards employees who share a safety suggestion or report a safety hazard with a corrective action. By listening to your employees’ feedback and taking action, you make them feel valued and keep them safe.

Adopt Safety Technology

Another step to keeping employees safe is adopting safety technology. The rise of mobile technology is currently one of the most important trends in the safety field. Contractors used to depend on hard

copies of accident reports, but can now complete all documents on their phone or tablet, and electronically share them with the office. This same method of document completion goes for hazard investigations, site reports or any other safety-related paperwork. With so many landscape contractors working from decentralized locations, the use of mobile technology is an efficient way to process reports in real time. Another safety technology on the rise is vehicle telematics. With telematics, you can track safe operations of your fleet. Most telematics providers can send you real-time alerts about who is driving your vehicle, how fast they’re going and how safely the vehicle is being operated. You can be notified if a speed limit is being exceeded or a seatbelt isn’t being used, and take corrective action with the employee. These vehicle safety requirements are

crucial to protecting employees’ wellbeing. Require your workers to buckle up and drive safely in every vehicle, no matter if it’s a truck or a forklift. In addition to tracking safe vehicle operations, telematics can also provide cost savings by identifying fuel consumption and idling time.

Match the Equipment to the Task

One of the most important safety steps you can take is to ensure that your employees have the right tools for the job, including PPE. PPE is some of the most important equipment your workers are ever going to use. The Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA) requires employers to provide PPE when their employees are exposed to hazards. Depending on the task being completed, required PPE can include hand, foot, eye

STRING TRIMMERS— the Swiss Army Knives of Lawn Maintenance

Greenworks, STIHL, Husqvarna, RedMax and Edgit offer insight on the advancements of string trimmers and some of their attachment systems.

H

ow complicated could a string trimmer possibly be? How innovative? Representatives from Greenworks Tools, STIHL, Husqvarna, RedMax and Edgit Company offer some insight on the changes and advancements of string trimmers—from ergonomics and safety to the future of environmentally conscious products.

What Contractors Want and Expect in a String Trimmer

Chad Bishop, the product development manager at Greenworks, believes contractors are looking for balance and comfort when on the hunt for a string trimmer: “They would like it to be flexible so they can use it for many different functions, such as bed edging, trimming and in smaller areas that mowers cannot reach.” Meanwhile, Christian Johnsson, a product manager representing Husqvarna and RedMax, notes that the ability and durability of the equipment is essential, along with its run time. “It

36 GREEN INDUSTRY PROS

GIP0419_36-41_EquipmentFocus CM.indd 36

has to withstand all of the abuse it is going to be exposed to. It should have a decently long or fairly long run time, regardless if it is gas or battery driven.” Mike Poluka, a product manager at STIHL, agrees that, whether a string trimmer runs on gas or batteries, landscapers want “more power, increased durability, a lightweight design and reduced vibration.” Steve Byrne, an inventor and CEO of Edgit Company, adds that cost-effectiveness, whether in saving time or money for a contractor, also drives purchasing choices. “When I was a mowing contractor, I wanted the lightest, most powerful, most reliable, most versatile and least expensive trimmer, in that order. I settled on the first three. My trimmers were for manicuring lawns, which meant using them for both trimming and edging.”

Equipment Features

Greenworks’ string trimmer is battery-operated, but its design provides the same functionality its gas counterparts offer. Bishop notes, “A lower gearbox and rear-mount motor allows the end user to use a same style trimmer head as a gas unit, and therefore provides the same functionality a user is accustomed to when performing their trimming tasks.” Additionally, multiple attachments, such as a string trimmer, edger, pole saw, cultivator, articulating hedge trimmer and blower, provide savings and convenience for users. Bishop says end users are achieving cost savings because they don’t need to purchase several pieces of stand-alone equipment.

While Husqvarna prides itself on durability as well, there’s a focus on the comfort of the end user, too. “We put a lot of effort into vibration controls

a two-stroke and battery. Additionally, both Husqvarna and RedMax offer attachment systems. In fact, the companies use the same coupler—one for consumer equipment and one for professional equipment—for their respective systems, allowing not only for a variety of attachments, but also the capability to use each brand’s attachments interchangeably. Johnsson says the coupler intended for professional usage allows the attachments to be changed within 10 seconds, saving time and money. The end user is also able to keep costs down by purchasing one product and adding attachments as he or she needs. “We have more than 10 different attachments for the pro coupler—a brush cutter, a cultivator, a trimmer, two different kinds of hedge trimmers, an edger, a blower, a dethatcher, a sweeper, a bristle brush, and an extension if you are using pole saws or hedge trimmers maybe,” according to Johnsson. Poluka and Marv Mathwig, also a product manager at STIHL, emphasize the importance of a string trimmer that can utilize multiple attachments

that there may be more attachments in the future. “STIHL still continues to expand its product lines to make lawn care faster and easier—be it via battery, be it corded products, be it gas-powered products,” he says. Poluka anticipates there’s going to be a higher demand for battery-powered products, from trimmers to blowers, and he predicts that demand is going to continue to grow along with manufacturer innovation in that segment. “I

believe you’ll see additional batteries that have increased energy content with the benefit of longer run times. So one of the biggest concerns to landscapers is what they can do on a single battery charge and, as this battery technology advances, we’re seeing more energy content in the same-sized batteries.” Byrne describes the advantages of combining a traditional string trimmer with an edger. “The Edgit rolls down an edge with the string spinning out beyond the Edgit’s outer lip, clearing a path for both the string and the disk. This allows the trimmer operator to maintain perfectly straight and vertical edges with a gas-powered straight-shaft string trimmer,” he says. “It’s able to perform two tasks with one tool, trimming and edging, which means less time on a job and more time being productive, which means making more money.”

as well. Mathwig lists STIHL’s KombiSystem attachment offerings that cover a wide range of services offered by landscapers: “Some of the different gearbox attachments are a mini cultivator, an edger, a 145-degree hedge trimmer, a zero-degree hedge trimmer, a bristle brush and a rubber paddle. There’s also what we call a power broom or power sweep for moving water, for moving snow, for moving mulch or for moving sand.” Other attachments include a trimmer, blower, bed redefiner, power scythe and brush cutter. Furthermore, the KombiMotor can be paired with five different power heads without forcing the operator to stop, remove screws from the gearbox and secure a new attachment. Mathwig elaborates, “You’re not even having to undo The STIHL FS 111 RX trimmer saves users screws at the time with a simplified gearbox; you three-step start just have one procedure. tommy screw that you turn and basically split the shaft of the trimmer, then you can attach any of these 14 different KombiSystem attachments onto the power head.” Poluka adds that STIHL recently released a battery-powered version of this popular tool. “Earlier this year, STIHL also introduced a battery-powered KombiSystem and it is, in fact, a professional machine. It is powered by a battery and it uses the same gasoline-powered attachments that we have in the range,” he says. Not only do both the gas- and batteryoperated KombiSystems offer over 14 attachments, but Mathwig notes

EQUIPMENT FOCUS Changes and Innovation in String Trimmers

For Greenworks string trimmers, changes are in the works from the types of materials being used to promoting operator ease and safety to improving battery operation. For example, Bishop mentions, “We’re partnering with multiple companies to design different types of heads that have a universal fit to allow greater ease of use for the end user.” Greenworks is exploring using different types of shaft materials, and balancing the motor and battery location on trimmers to help prevent operator fatigue. The company’s focus on battery-operated equipment also allows for ease of use and maintenance. “Battery technology affords power and comfort with minimal maintenance requirements. Simply add lubrication to the gearbox annually and you are prepared for a season of cutting,” Bishop explains. Johnsson notes that Husqvarna and RedMax are advancing their string trimmers by lowering vibrations, increasing ease of use for the operator, improving battery efficiency and boosting safety. “We are adding bushings and bearings in certain places to reduce the amount of vibrations inside the shaft, along with reducing weight as much as possible,” he says. As a matter of fact, reduced weight can be another benefit of operating a battery string trimmer. Johnsson says, “The [Husqvarna] 500 Series string trimmer’s battery itself is lighter weight, and then it’s got that perfect balance in the product.” An additional innovation comes in the form of safety for the user. While Husqvarna and RedMax already utilize a pro guard to reduce the risk of the operator being hit with debris while trimming, they are also adding personal protective equipment and apparel for users. Johnsson describes the clothing as intended for use with trimmers: “For example, the pants are a little bit softer on the legs if you’re in gravel or dirt, so there is less risk of injury if the

trimmer throws rocks or gravel at you.” Meanwhile, Mathwig notes some recent changes in STIHL string trimmers include a larger fuel tank that holds 24 ounces and a semi-automatic choke lever. “We have a one-touch stop button, semi-automatic choke so when you try to start the unit, you put it on choke manually and then once the unit starts, you hit the throttle trigger and it automatically takes the unit off of choke,” he says. Other recent innovations for STIHL string trimmers include easier access to spark plugs and valves for quicker service, as well as a data port that monitors successful starts and the number of hours on the machine. In the future, it may even provide diagnostic services. Finally, Mathwig concludes, “We have some new cutting heads and probably one of the biggest trends in the industry is cutting heads that you can reload without disassembling the head. So, we’re right there along with the other folks in the industry, but we feel we have a big advantage with our new AutoCut C 26-2 head.” Bryne acknowledges that advancements in trimmer head design and split-boom shafts are allowing string trimmers to become more versatile. “The best innovations in trimmer head design lately are those that let the operator thread lengths of line through the assembled head/spool, then simply wind the string onto the spool by twisting the bottom,” he explains. For contractors who are just starting out and looking to get the biggest bang for their buck, Byrne recommends a trimmer with a split-boom shaft. “This allows the operator to have one powerhead with multiple shaft attachments, which adds to the trimmer’s versatility, especially for the small contractor with limited resources.”

Following the Edge

His own innovation, the Edgit, has changed the way he trains string trimmer operators and put their safety at the forefront. “The one thing that

APRIL 2019

The STIHL KombiSystem is a versatile landscaping system that includes a STIHL KombiMotor and a full line of attachments. Together, they give landscaping professionals the ability to tackle a tremendous range of outdoor tasks without loading the trailer with a pile of tools.

I disliked about straight-shaft trimmers was that the counterclockwise rotation of the string forces righthanded operators to walk backwards while trimming along a wall,” he says. Byrne’s moment of realization came as he trained a new employee. “One day, I happened to hire a kid who had never used a trimmer before and he was also left-handed. He picked up the string trimmer with his left hand on the gas and right hand on the handle. This is just the opposite of everybody else and how the industry recommends trimmers be held,” Byrne recalls. As Byrne watched his new hire at work, it occurred to him that this simple difference could drastically improve the operator experience, despite initial resistance. “From that day forward, I forced all my operators to carry string trimmers left-handed. From this, I created a training system for trimmer operators that I include to this day with every Edgit I sell. We call it ‘following the edge,’ and there is no faster, more effective or more productive way of manicuring a lawn than this system,” he concludes.

Noise Ordinances Lead to Advances in BatteryOperated Trimmers

Bishop emphasizes the importance of battery-operated trimmers for their lack of noise and fumes. “Battery technology allows for a quieter experience so the lack of noise gives the end user the ability to landscape anytime,” he mentions. “Power and advancement in battery technology is allowing us to produce several trimmers and brush cutters to exceed the 40cc powerband of gas. This means little to no noise and no fumes for the environment, and a longer run time.” Johnsson adds that upholding emission standards, and focusing Husqvarna’s and RedMax’s energies on battery-operated products are going to see them into the future, but they aren’t abandoning gas-powered equipment either. “I think we need to put more effort into battery, however, we’re not forgetting about gas. We’re still the better lineup of gas [equipment] by far and we will be so for quite some years,” he says. “We will continue to improve everything we have—two- and four-stroke as well.” Similarly, Poluka and Mathwig note that, while there is a high demand for battery-operated STIHL products, there is also an opportunity to Angie Mellor is a freelance writer and editor in La Crosse, Wisconsin.

Finance for Landscaping Business Owners of All Sizes

Part 4:

P

There are many types of budgets available to landscaping business owners. Here’s how to start your budgeting journey.

art 3 covered accounting and invoicing with a reference to activity-based costing or ABC. Putting together an effective budget doesn’t require ABC, but it helps. A budget has two demands to be effective—accuracy and forecasting. This discussion begins with the types of budgets available to a landscape business owner and then focuses on where to start. Types of budgeting systems include: • Traditional, which means created for a period using the previous year as a starting point. • Z ero-based in which every year starts from scratch. Last year provides insights, but instead you start at zero. • Flexible, with ongoing adjustments based on sales forecasts and the impact on production projections. • Rolling, which takes a year-long view and, at the end of every period (a month or quarter), it is dropped, while adding a new month or quarter to maintain a 12-month budget. You should be asking: Which is the best for my landscape business? Start with either the traditional or zerobased system, then as your competence and confidence increases, move to flexible and rolling budgets, in this order: • T he traditional budget. If this is your first attempt to create a budget, go simple. Take last year’s numbers and adjust as needed. For example, if the cost of materials or labor has increased, make those adjustments. The key is to build an accurate forecast for demands on cash and credit so you have a historical base for next year. • T he zero-based budget. This is the budgeting system the government

42 GREEN INDUSTRY PROS

uses (but don’t let that discourage you). Its power is not accepting that last year was right. In this system, every year you determine what is needed. • T he flexible budget. This system moves the budget from being fixed to include the dynamics of running the business. This approach increases the accuracy of revenue and spending forecasts. • T he rolling budget. Save this budgeting system for when you have all the pieces right. Tied to a flexible budget, it takes your forecasting from just the next month or quarter to 12 months. Now the question moves from the budgeting system to its use. The following is a quick overview of the choices most appropriate for small landscaping companies: master, operating, financial, cash, labor, capital or strategic budgets. It’s likely best to start with the operational budget, then add the cash budget. Hen

The Operating Budget

The operating budget is nothing more than taking the statements discussed in Part 1 (www.greenindustrypros.com/21034213), the balance sheet, and profit and loss statement, and using them to project upcoming months. This is simple: On a spreadsheet, create the same categories as the balance sheet by the month. Place these in rows. Then across the top, create three columns for each month:

Im a

ge s

JAN2018A (this month last year), JAN2019F (your estimated numbers for the month) and JAN2019A (what actually happened). Now you are ready to track this month last year against this year, and what happened. The payoff is you can ask why what happened differs from the forecast and make adjustments to the next month.

s Plu

The Cash Budget

Just like the operating budget, the cash budget uses one of the big three financial statements—the monthly cashflow statement. Create a new spreadsheet on the same document and do the same thing. Place the items from the cashflow statement in rows in your new spreadsheet. Then along the top, create three columns for each month—this month last year, this month’s forecast and the actual use of cash for the month. The payoff is you can track use and investigate further when something looks off track. Budgeting is simple. The challenge is the time commitment it takes to keep budgets up to date weekly. Once you do it, the power of budgeting is clear—you can control how much you spend on what and when. ❯
