Cards for Troops

The Green Hills Public Library District has partnered with AdoptaPlatoon in order to send signed and decorated holiday cards to United States servicemen and servicewomen currently serving overseas. The partnership was proposed by James Kruse of Palos Hills, Director of the Hickory Hills branch of AdoptaPlatoon, a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting deployed troops and military families. Visit the Library and sign a card or bring in signed cards to show your support.

Food for Fines

Do you have overdue fines? Now is the time to clear your account! During the month of November, we will waive $1.00 from your overdue fines for each non-perishable food item that you donate. There is no limit. Items must be in good condition with labels intact. Expired items will not be accepted. This program only applies to overdue fines and cannot be redeemed for lost/damaged costs or referral fees. All food items will be donated to the Palos Township Food Pantry.

NEws Staff Development Day The Library will be closed on Friday, December 8 for Staff Development Day. We will reopen on Saturday, December 9 at 10am.

Small Business Saturday Our community has a large variety of small businesses where you can shop this Thanksgiving Weekend. You can find a complete list of these businesses for both Hickory Hills and Palos Hills on The Hills Chamber website at thehillschamber.org/shop_local. Pardon our dust as our Reorganization and Improvement Project is in progress. We thank you for your honest feedback and suggestions, allowing us to make changes that you want and need at your Library. We are eagerly waiting for all phases of the project to be completed so that you can enjoy the improvements. The project is expected to be completed by early 2018, so there’s not much time left! I always think the staff offer wonderful programs and November and December are no exception. Author Tom Watson will be at the Library on November 13. Tom writes the Stick Dog and Stick Cat series for young readers but started his career in politics working for U.S. Senator John Glenn and as the Chief Speechwriter for the Governor of Ohio. As some of you may know, I am a big dog lover so I’m sure I will be dropping into the Read to the Dogs program on December 4. If you have fines on your Library card make sure you come into the Library during the month of November. We will waive $1.00 from your account for each non-perishable food item you bring in. The food items will be donated to the Palos Township Food Pantry. Just as a reminder the Library is open on December 24 and 31 from 12–4pm.

Why shop local? Not only does shopping at local businesses build on your community, but it strengthens the economy and puts money back into your neighborhood. Please remember to shop local this weekend and have a wonderful holiday!

Friends of the Library Fall Meeting Thursday, November 2 • 2pm

The Friends of the Green Hills Library Fall Meeting will take place on Thursday, November 2 in the Meeting Room on the 1st floor of the Library. Dessert will be served after the meeting.

Reel Special Event Saturday, December 9 • 10:30am–4:30pm

Drop in the Library throughout the day to view an exciting array of full-sized movie posters. There will be a short and fun matching activity for all ages. This activity consists of matching several descriptions to movie posters on display. One lucky participant with all correct responses will win a $30 Visa gift card!

Parking Notice

Happy Holidays! -Jane Jenkins jjenkins@greenhillslibrary.org

The Library’s parking lot fills up quickly, especially when there is a scheduled event. Parking in a non-designated space is prohibited as it may block entry/exit for other cars and emergency vehicles.

What’s Our Staff Reading? Currently, I am reading The Witcher Saga, by Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski. In this high-fantasy series, “witchers” are monster hunters who develop supernatural abilities and are trained to fight deadly monsters from a young age. This series also served as inspiration for the award-winning video games of the same name. If you’re a fan of Game of Thrones, Lord of the Rings, or enjoyed The Witcher video games, I definitely recommend checking out The Witcher Saga! -Grace, Circulation
