Do you have overdue fines? Now is the time to clear your account! During the entire month of November, we will waive $1.00 from Green Hills cardholders’ overdue fines for each non-perishable food item that is donated. There is no limit! Items must be in good condition with labels intact.

Expired items cannot be accepted. Food for Fines only applies to overdue fines and cannot be redeemed for lost/damaged costs or referral fees. All food items will be donated to the Palos Township Food Pantry.

Friends Fall Book Sale The Friends Fall Book Sale will be held November 18–20 in the Meeting Room on the first floor of the Library. Hours of the book sale will be published around the Library. This is an opportunity to buy books, CDs, DVDs, and audiobooks for very reasonable prices. Proceeds from the Friends Book Sale will be used to support GHPLD. The Friends will host an opening reception for the book sale on Thursday, November 17 at 5pm. Library Director Jane Jenkins will provide a brief history on the Library as we celebrate 45 years since the groundbreaking of our existing building. Refreshments will be served. All are welcome!

Election The Library is a polling place for the upcoming election. Polls will be open from 6am–7pm. Find your polling place online at elections.il.gov.

Take Home a Roku Player The Library now has Roku players available for checkout. This device connects to your television and wireless Internet at home, allowing you to stream movies and television shows. Each Roku player is preloaded with popular feature films in addition to various news and entertainment channels. If you are interested in checking out a Roku, visit the Circulation Desk for more information.

from the did you know? director Crochet for Charity We are in need of yarn donations! We accept any color yarn as long as it is machine washable and dryable. No fuzzy or fun fur yarn please.

Here we are almost at the end of another year! The Library has seen some changes during the year with the addition of the walking path from 103rd Street to the entrance on Interlochen. I hope you have had a chance to enjoy a walk along this path before winter is here. The new AV shelving has proved to be very popular with both patrons and staff. A new circulation item is the Roku Player that is preloaded with popular feature films as well as various news and entertainment channels. Circulation staff can assist with any questions you may have. We are again offering our Food for Fines during the entire month of November, so bring in those non-perishable food items to clear your fines, and the food items will be donated to the Palos Township Food Pantry.

The Library is a polling place for the November 8 election. The Digital Lounge and Circulation Desk will be available if you would like to take advantage of using the computers or picking up some materials while you are here.

Small Business Saturday is an event that takes place over Thanksgiving weekend. I encourage you to shop locally at your small and local businesses over this weekend. The Hills Chamber website has a list of businesses for Hickory and Palos Hills that can be found at thehillschamber.org/shop_local.

This is a great way to show support for our community.

Just as a reminder, the Library is open on December 24 from 10am–3pm. The month of December also marks three years since we have been open until 9pm on Fridays!

We have donated a total of 73 baby blankets, 449 pet beds, and 338 red newborn hats. This is an ongoing program, so bring in your donations anytime. We will accept items that are already completed or you can check out a bag with all the materials provided. All donations can be given to the Circulation or Information Desk on the 2nd floor of the Library.

Small Business Saturday Launched by American Express, the first Small Business Saturday took place on November 27, 2010. Now, six years later, we continue to encourage our community to shop at small and local businesses over Thanksgiving weekend.

Why shop local? Not only does shopping at small businesses build on your community, but it strengthens the economy and puts money back into your own community.

Our community has a large variety of small businesses where you can shop this Thanksgiving weekend. You can find a complete list of these businesses for both Hickory Hills and Palos Hills on The Hills Chamber website at thehillschamber.org/shop_local.

Please remember to shop local this weekend and have a wonderful holiday!

World Language Books

We have so many wonderful programs lined up for the holidays for both adults and youth, and I hope to see many of you here.

The Library has a growing World Languages collection with both Youth and Adult books written in a variety of languages, including Arabic, Polish, and Spanish. These collections are regularly updated with new materials. If you are looking for an item that is not currently available at the Library, please visit the Information Desk to request it.​

What’s Our Staff Reading?

Adobe Master Class: Advanced Compositing in Photoshop I’m reading Adobe Master Class: Advanced Compositing in Photoshop. I love taking pictures and this book gives me ideas to modify my photos with Adobe Photoshop.

It also focuses on the hidden tools you need to know to create great composite imagery. I recommend it for Adobe Photoshop users.

Gettysburg Address with Don White*

Thursday, November 10 • 6:30pm Don’t know much about the Gettysburg Address? Join historian Don C. White as he tells us how it came about that President Lincoln was asked to make a few appropriate remarks during the dedication of the cemetery at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. This event is for ages 10 and up.

Alexander Hamilton: The American Rags to Riches Story*

Alexander Hamilton was born in the Caribbean and abandoned as a child. How did these humble beginnings plant the seeds of opportunity for this Founding Father? Ironically, he in turn created opportunities for others by helping to create a government he could never run as President. This event is for adults only.

Mike Gershbein of the technology instruction company Very Smart People will offer a survey of unique technology products from inexpensive to pricey and practical to off-the-wall. Registration is limited to 30. This class is for adults only.

Book discussions will take place on the last Wednesday of the month at 7pm at different locations around the community.

Copies of the books will be available at the Circulation Desk one month prior to each meeting for GHPLD cardholders. Adults of all ages are welcome to participate!

Celebrate International Games Day at the Library. Challenge your friends and family to an afternoon of board games!

Play a game you know well or learn a new one! All ages welcome.

The beloved children’s book about Wilbur the pig and his friendship with a spider named Charlotte is brought to life in this musical by American Eagle Productions.

Registration is limited to 90. Children of all ages welcome. Caregivers must register as well.

Compete alongside your friends in a fun, yet challenging game of Jeopardy. Prizes will be awarded to everyone who participates. Children 6 and up. Registration is limited to 30.

Framed: Art Club*

Join us as we learn about different artists and the types of art they create.

We will recreate their works and hang them in our gallery. Please dress accordingly as this program could get messy.
