In 2022, the Green Hills Public Library District celebrates its 60th anniversary. Sixty years ago, residents of Hickory Hills and Palos Hills were discussing creating libraries to serve their communities, and it soon became clear that the best way to support this goal was to go at it together. On December 8, 1962, GHPLD was officially formed. Today, we proudly serve the communities of Hickory Hills and Palos Hills, both of which have rich histories dating back hundreds of years. Over the years, the Library has maintained numerous historical documents in a physical format, with a growing demand for digital access. In an effort to facilitate access to this collection, our staff have digitized our historical documents for patrons, researchers, and all those interested in the history of the Library, Hickory Hills, and Palos Hills.

The Library’s History Archive can be found at ghpldhistoryarchive.omeka.net. It is free and open to the public to access. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact the Adult Services Department at 708-598-8446 ext. 120 or adultservices@greenhillslibrary.org.

From the Director Happy New Year! I hope you were all able to enjoy the holiday festivities and are ready for 2022. There is still time to donate new hats, handwarmers, and low denomination gift cards to the Library’s Giving Tree to benefit individuals experiencing homelessness. The Giving Tree is in the Lobby on the Ground Floor of the Library. To those of you who have donated, I appreciate your generosity.

We are starting the new year with some wonderful programs. Winter Reading will be underway from January 17 and ending on February 19, with gift card prizes for our adults supporting our local businesses, and plenty of toys and games for our younger readers. If you would like some help choosing a book, our professional title matchmakers can provide you with personalized selections. Call the Library or visit our website for more information.

I also want to share an update from the November Regular Board meeting, where our Board of Trustees approved a construction project in some of the staff areas of the building. The improvements from this project will allow the staff to maintain and enhance services needed in the community, as well as introduce new initiatives to benefit our patrons with no tax increase. Work is expected to begin in early spring, and we will be posting further information closer to that time on our website at greenhillslibrary.org. One million plastic beverage bottles are purchased every minute around the world, yet recycling rates remain low. Combat plastic waste with this reusable tumbler! This portable tumbler will provide hydration and reduce the need for plastic beverage bottles. Try out this reusable travel tumbler and consider replacing single-use bottles and cups. Did you know that the average American produces about 4.9 pounds of trash per day? Cut down on single-use plastic bags at the grocery store with this mesh bag set! This set of small, medium, and large bags are reusable and perfect for produce shopping. Try them out and consider replacing plastic bags with these neat mesh bags.
