Chill Out and Read!

Winter is the perfect time to curl up with a good book! Sign up for our youth winter reading program and log your books for a chance to win prizes! Every 100 minutes you read earns you a raffle ticket for our cool grand prizes. Weekly prizes will also be awarded. Grades PreK–12. Volunteers Wanted!

Green Hills Public Library District needs your support once again! Stop in and pick up a Fannie May candy bar for just $1.00 between February 1–28. There are a variety of flavors and no limit to how many you can buy! Purchases can be made at the Circulation Desk located on the 2nd floor.

Adult Programming is looking for some talented, bilingual volunteers who are interested in helping run a foreign language conversation group or ESL/EIL adult conversation group at Green Hills. A time commitment of a few hours each week is required, along with fluency in another language besides English. GHPLD is excited to announce the latest digital media platform available to its cardholders, hoopla!

This new service provides access to a collection of over 200,000 movies, TV, music, and audiobooks.

Borrow instantly on your tablet or smartphone using the hoopla app, available for iOS, Android, and Kindle Fire. If you do not have a tablet or smartphone, hoopla is also accessible from a PC. Titles are checked out and automatically returned at the end of the lending period so you never have to worry about overdue fines. Entertainment has never been easier or more convenient. Adult Programs Unshelved* Last Wednesday Every Month • 7pm After many years on hiatus, Green Hills is launching a new book discussion group called Unshelved. Plenty of newer fiction and nonfiction titles will be featured, and we hope this group will make a nice addition to our regular programming.

Meetings will take place on the last Wednesday of each month at 7pm at different locations in the community. Copies of the books will be available starting one month prior to each meeting at the Circulation Desk. Adults of all ages can participate, and we hope to see you there!

Downton Abbey Portraits* Tuesday, January 6 • 6pm Before the Lady Almina program on Tuesday, come early and get your photo taken Downton Abbey style. Pick one of several backgrounds and show you’re truly a fan of the series!

Lady Almina & the Real Downton Abbeys* Tuesday, January 6 • 7pm Did you know that the hit series Downton Abbey was partly based on one of its most famous inhabitants, Lady Almina, the 5th Countess of Carnarvon? Join historical storyteller Lynn Rymarz for her portrayal of Lady Almina in this dramatic retelling of her life. Learn about how Lady Almina transformed the castle into a hospital during World War I to care for wounded soldiers and how she distinguished herself as a brave and remarkable woman.

Adult Programs Mastering the FAFSA

Bel Sonore Live*

Gerald Knight of Tax Busters will help teens and their parents navigate through the FAFSA process and give helpful tips for financially planning for college.

The highly reviewed Bel Sonore Chamber Ensemble will perform a classical concert, featuring several standard numbers using voice, woodwinds, and brass instruments.

Beat the Winter Blues*

South Side Seniors

Thursday, January 29 • 2pm

Thursday, February 12 • 10am

Steve Frenzel brings summery scenes and toe-tapping musical numbers from exotic and tropical-themed movies in cinema history to help us beat the blah of winter.

No passport required!

The South Side Seniors will be taking a break in January, but will be back in February to watch Land Ho!, a film about 60-something ex-brothers-in-law taking a trip through Iceland, hoping to reclaim their youth.

Friday Flicks Jersey Boys Friday, January 23 • 2pm The story of four young men from the wrong side of the tracks in New Jersey who came together to form the iconic 1960s rock group The Four Seasons.

The Skeleton Twins Friday, February 20 • 6pm

Mrs. Lincoln in Love*

Having both coincidentally cheated death on the same day, estranged twins reunite with the possibility of mending their relationship.

Tuesday, February 10 • 7pm Actress and researcher Laura F. Keyes performs as Mary Todd Lincoln, telling us about the loves of her life: her husband, her children and her country. See how Mrs. Lincoln really was “lucky in love” in this dramatic performance.

Abraham Lincoln’s Doctor’s Dog* Thursday, February 26 • 7pm Historian Robert Girardi will be taking an interesting look at the Civil War through the humorous, ludicrous, and odd incidents that occurred during this war torn time.

Day card at the same time! Using LEDs, batteries, and conductive tape we will make very unique Valentine’s Day cards. Ages 10–17.

This robotic friend will keep your money safe! Join us to paint your very own ceramic robot bank! Ages 5 and up. Registration is limited to 34 per session. Due to high demand, we are offering this program on two dates. Patrons are limited to registering for only one session.

Bugs, Beetles, & Bookworms* Thursday, February 19 • 6pm We’ll have a blast as we learn about monarch butterflies, dragonflies, beetles, and other bugs! We’ll learn how bugs’ bodies are similar and different than our own, how bees communicate through dancing, and much more! Ages 5 and up.
