National Night Out

Geocaching Competition

Tuesday, August 2 • 6:30–8:30pm The Library is partnering with the Palos Hills Community Resource & Recreation Department, the Palos Hills Police Department, and the North Palos Fire Department for a fun summer evening for families! National Night Out is a nationwide campaign to encourage community engagement and build closer police-community partnerships. There will be a family concert with singer Dave Rudolf, a balloon artist, a face painter, and more! This event will take place at Town Square Park, Palos Hills. Send the summer off in style with fun for the whole family.

Monday, June 6– Saturday, August 6 The geocaching competition is in full swing! Visit each participating library to find the hidden geocaches and turn in your qualifying scorecard to receive an entry in the grand prize raffle!

Did You Know?

Green Hills Public Library Day at the Lenhardt Library of the Chicago Botanic Garden* Tuesday, August 9 • 2pm Did you know that the Chicago Botanic Garden has a gardening library? Come explore the hidden gems in this special library! On Tuesday, August 9 from 1–2 pm, stop at the Chicago Botanic Garden gatehouse, give your registered name, and your parking cost will be waived. Register with GHPLD by Tuesday, August 3. Registration is limited to 40. This opportunity is open to all ages.

Dear Library Community, I hope everybody is enjoying their summer and that you are taking advantage of all the wonderful programs we have to offer. National Night Out on August 2 sounds like a wonderful time for families to get together and enjoy some of the activities being offered including a balloon artist, a face painter, and music with Dave Rudolf.

I hope to see many of you there.

Please pardon our dust! We are working on some internal and external projects during the coming months. We are making some improvements to the Eastern exterior of the Library to better accommodate visitors who like to walk to the Library. We are also replacing our audio/visual shelving to make browsing the movies easier.

The new shelves will be zig zag style so there will be no more flipping the movies to find what you are looking for!

There is still time to sign up for the Summer Reading Program and enter to win one of our grand prizes! Good luck!

New Little Free Library We are very excited to announce our second Little Free Library, located at Krueger Park Recreation Center, 9100 S. 88th Avenue, Hickory Hills. The Little Free Library has a sports and recreation theme, designed by Artist Alicia Londos.

Anyone may use the Little Free Library; neighbors, friends, people who pass by. Here’s how it works: If you see something in the Little Free Library that you would like to read, take it. After you read the book, you can return it to the Little Free Library or share it with a friend. You can also pay it forward by adding your own favorite books to the Little Free Library. We are thankful to be part of this partnership with the Hickory Hills Park District and hope that it will promote literacy, increase the love of reading, and build a sense of community.

Yarn Donations Yarn donations can be made at the Circulation or Information Desk on the second floor of the Library. Any color is accepted, but the yarn has to be machine washable and dryable. No fuzzy yarn please. So far, we have donated a total of 66 baby blankets, 295 pet beds, and 250 red newborn hats.

What’s Our Staff Reading?

Alexander Hamilton, through sheer willpower and hard work, transformed himself from an orphaned, impoverished immigrant into one of the most important figures in the creation of the United States. Some loved and trusted him; many others were scandalized by Hamilton, but none could deny his influence on history.

Ultimately, Hamilton—outlived by his political rivals—would have his legacy all but erased, becoming the forgotten founding father. Chernow’s compelling biography was the inspiration for the hit Broadway sensation Hamilton.

Zendalas: Coloring Workshop* Friday, July 15 • 1pm

I-Cash Clinic Saturday, July 9 • 11am–3pm Stop by the I-Cash table located in the Lobby.

Through the I-Cash program, the Illinois State Treasurer’s Unclaimed Property Division connects state residents with their unclaimed property. One in eight Illinois residents has an asset to be claimed in I-Cash. Assets include everything from stocks and CDs, safe deposit boxes, and valuables. This opportunity is open to all ages.

Gong Meditation

Thursday, July 14 • 7pm Andre Peraza, Gong Guru will be back at the Library to guide us on a gong meditation journey. Bring a yoga mat, blanket, and a

“Zendala” is a mix of two words: Zen (calming) and Mandala (an ancient radial design art form). Join us and create your own Zendala coloring page following Christine’s step-by-step instructions. Christine also offers tips for improving your coloring techniques. No art experience required.

Beginners welcome! Leave with your own beautiful designs. Registration is limited to 30. This workshop is for ages 16 and up.

Crochet 101 Wednesday, July 20 • 10am and 3pm Wednesday, August 17 • 10am and 3pm Don’t crochet? No worries! Come to Crochet 101, a class where you can learn the basics. Supplies will be provided by the Library, but feel free to bring your own.

Tuesday, July 26 • 6:30pm It’s time to explore some classic recipes as well as learn some new favorites with Chef Maddox. This program will build your confidence to enjoy entertaining over these warm summer months. This event is for adults only. Registration is limited to 50.

Healthy Living for Your Brain and Body: Tips from the Latest Research* Wednesday, July 27 • 10am Join us to learn about research in the areas of diet and nutrition, exercise, cognitive activity and social engagement, and use hands-on tools to help you incorporate these recommendations into a plan for healthy aging.

Lunch and Learning* Tuesday, August 2 • 11:30am Learn over lunch! The Library will provide a boxed lunch. Then we’ll learn about Chicago’s 1904 and 2016 failed Olympic bids from historian Dave Clark. Registration is limited to 30. This event is for adults only.

Ravinia Trip: Tony Bennett* Saturday, August 13 • 4:30– 11:30pm Come see Tony Bennett with us at Highland Park’s Ravinia Festival. Bring your dinner with or dine at the Festival’s many restaurants on site. Trip fee is $40 for residents and $50 for non-residents (cash or check, please) and includes lawn seats and transportation.

UFOologist Terry Fisk discusses the top UFO sightings of Illinois, the Midwest, and the world. Included in his presentation are such well-known cases as the Rockford Sightings (2000), St. Clair County Triangle Sightings (2000), Tinley Park Lights (2004), and Chicago O’Hare UFO Sighting (2006).

Reverse Mortgages: Helping Seniors Stay in Their Homes Friday, August 26 • 10am Hear about the facts vs. myths of reverse mortgages. Learn how you can use the equity in your home to create extra income or to pay off a mortgage or credit cards. This program has been reformed over the past year and learning about these changes will help you make an informed decision about how a reverse mortgage works. This event is for adults only.

Be Safe Online* Monday, August 15 • 6:30pm In this lecture-based class, gain practical tips on avoiding credit card and identity theft online by managing passwords, avoiding malware and viruses, and showing online smarts with Mike Gershbein of the technology instruction company Very Smart People. Come to the Library and battle your friends in the Chocolate Olympics! We will play dessert themed games including cupcake eating contests, candy bar trivia, Oreo relay races, and more! Prizes will be rewarded. Registration is limited to 30. Ages 10–17.

Come to the Library and make your own cool buttons to decorate your backpacks, jackets, bags, and more! We will have comic books, magazines, and other cool pictures for you to use for the buttons.
