IMPACT REPORT Green Hedges School

2023–2024

2023–2024
The 2023–2024 Green Hedges School Impact Report aims to showcase the profound influence that philanthropy and the Green Hedges community have on our school. The joy our students experience daily is a testament to the passion and dedication of our educators and staff. This would not be possible without the generous support we receive from our donors.
As you read this year’s Impact Report, keep in mind that these moments of joy are made possible by the collective efforts of everyone involved. Green Hedges is committed to nurturing kind, curious leaders, and our educators play a crucial role in unlocking each student’s potential. Our faculty and staff benefit greatly from the unwavering support provided through classroom resources, school improvements, and professional development opportunities. This impact report illustrates how a single contribution can tremendously affect our community—whether by encouraging staff innovation or inspiring others to give, ultimately enhancing the Green Hedges experience for all.
Thank you for making a difference. Your support has helped us envision new possibilities for Green Hedges School, and for that, we are deeply grateful.
Sincerely,
Jennifer P. Bohnen, Head of School
Through their generosity, the following donors directly benefited our students and teachers by contributing to the Green Hedges Fund. As the cornerstone of philanthropy at Green Hedges, the Green Hedges Fund supports every student, every day in the classroom, on stage, and on the athletic field. It is with tremendous gratitude that Green Hedges acknowledges the individuals listed on these pages.

Dragon Dash is a yearly fundraiser held by students of Green Hedges. Students ask friends and family to support them by making contributions to their fundraising pages and then participate in a 15-minute fun run to raise money for the Green Hedges Fund. Thank you to families and friends who sponsored our young runners on their fun run!

The Equitable Experience Fund (EEF), established in 2020, aims to ensure that all students have the same opportunities and experiences while at Green Hedges. Grants from this fund will be offered to students by race/ethnicity and/or socioeconomic status in Montessori – Grade 8 to help cover non-tuition costs. Thank you to those who have donated this past year.

Each year, in the throes of winter, Green Hedges educators take a moment to reflect on their teaching. This crucial mid-year examination of practices allows them the opportunity to apply for a Summer Faculty Grant. These Grants are funded not only through generous donations and the Green Hedges Parent Association, but through parent dues that are wrapped into yearly tuition.
The Summer Faculty Grants originated in response to the community’s desire to support educators’ passions, ultimately enriching the educational backdrop of Green Hedges School. In recent years, staff and faculty have attended workshops that include cross-grade curricular planning, how to help students be culture creators in history and social studies, and even an initiative to enhance our library to serve the needs of the students and adults. This approach has allowed staff and faculty to participate in a range of enriching workshops and initiatives, all of which contribute significantly to the continuous improvement of the Green Hedges educational experience. All of these program enhancements that our educators bring back to Green Hedges wouldn’t be possible without the support of our parents and Parent Association. Thank you to each and every family who has helped to make it possible.
In the Fall of 2020 the Tallent Family joined Green Hedges School after a difficult experience with public education in the face of the pandemic. As they shared, “we’d been a public school family our entire life, we had never really thought of a private school until that moment.” After meeting other parents and our Head of School, Jenn Bohnen, the Tallents were hooked. “The school has felt like a perfect fit since the beginning and we’ve watched Owen embrace his love of learning, feel nurtured by the school and transform into who he’s supposed to be.” The Tallents credit Green Hedges’s faculty and staff for helping Owen find his true self, through athletics and the focus on art. The Tallents shared, “...the faculty and staff see each student for who they are and appreciate the gifts that child has without making them feel like they have to be part of the mold.” Now after 4 years, the Tallents are eager to continue to find ways to support Green Hedges’s mission through donations and volunteerism. The Tallents hope to see Green Hedges School grow in the future, thanks to the generous support of each and every person that has felt the school’s impact.
When the Fratta family first set foot on the Green Hedges School campus, it was before they had children of their own. After attending a Special Friends Day in the early 2000’s, they fell in love with the community and feel. Years later, the Frattas were searching for a school that felt right based on their son and the type of learner he was and re-discovered Green Hedge’s campus. Quickly they noted that the school felt like “an extension of family,” and continues to four years later. The Fratta family was struck by how special Green Hedges was in its support of who each student is, from a special artist study of Jon Bon Jovi (LivingonaPrayerwas a constant soundtrack at home per their son’s request) to focusing on exploring nature around them. The feel of family continued as the Frattas became closer to the community. Cara shares, “If we want our school to support our students and wonderful families, it takes a village and we need to be part of the family.”
The Fratta family continues to support Green Hedges by giving anything they can, from time to resources, and this extends to the Fratta Grandparents as well. The Fratta family shares that they hope to see Green Hedges grow and enhance its campus and community in the future and plan to be a part of the support system that does so.
The Next Evolution of the Green Hedges Board: Saying Goodbye and Welcoming the New!
Dear Green Hedges Families,
As my time as Chair of the Board of Trustees at Green Hedges School comes to a close, I feel a touch of nostalgia for the past and excitement for the future of Green Hedges. Watching the Class of 2024 paint
the shed—a tradition marking their GHS journey’s end —I’m tempted to bring my paintbrush and add my name to the shed in a private celebration of my treasured eleven years as a parent, volunteer, and Board Chair.
Becoming the Chair in the Summer of 2020 was a unique baptism by fire. I vividly remember the incredible creativity, resilience, and “can-do spirit” shown by staff, Trustees, and families. As a team, we navigated those unprecedented challenges together, refining our mission and holding steadfast to our core values.
Since 2020, we have followed the 2020–2025 Strategic Plan, “Our Vision of Wonder, ” to Lead, Invest, Design, and Connect, and have made giant strides toward realizing GHS’s potential. As we approach 2025, the School has accomplished many of the objectives
outlined in the plan due to the focus of the Board and the execution by the incredible GHS faculty and staff.
Thanks to the many years of sound financial stewardship, we have been able to bolster GHS’s financial stability and accessibility. We launched the Green Hedges Affordability Program (GHAP) and the Equitable Experience Fund (EEF) program to ensure families can access a Green Hedges education. In 2021, we welcomed the youngest learners to GHS as we expanded the Montessori program to include a two-year-old classroom.
Looking to redesign the campus to meet current and future programmatic needs, the Board updated the Campus Master Plan. More exciting milestones will come for this project, so stay tuned!
None of these achievements would have been possible without a solid partnership with Head of School Jennifer
Bohnen and the faculty and staff. They’ve shown not only strategic vision but also incredible execution and productivity throughout the process. We are blessed to have such a talented team.
Lastly, I’m optimistic about GHS’s future with leadership from incoming Chair Jessica Wadlow and the Board’s returning and new members. I’m happy to leave the Board in a better place than when I arrived, and not nearly as good as it will be in the future.
Thank you for the opportunity to serve and leave my mark at this delightful place for young people—and adults—of talent and promise.
Cheers,
