Welcome to another issue of Transport Monthly, In this issue, we take a look at OnTruck, a Spanish business started back in 2016 by a group of established businessmen, it is an online platform that uses technology to reduce the inefficiencies of the road freight industry. Hoppecke invests in IT to boost customer service

Energy management specialist Hoppecke Industrial Batteries has embarked on a series of IT-enabled business process upgrades to improve standards of service and maximise efficiencies, following customer and employee feedback.

As part of a new integrated IT strategy, supported and jointly initiated by the parent company in Germany, Hoppecke is updating its dedicated engineering tool. This will be followed by the roll out of a sales app in July and the introduction of a new CRM (customer relationship management) system, which is scheduled for the end of the year.

Using SITs, a custom-built, computerbased service solutions system that integrates into Hoppecke's ERP process management software, engineers use iPads to conduct live planning and maintenance scheduling. Once a job has been completed reports are finalised immediately, while the engineer is still on site, and emailed directly to a named contact, capturing an electronic signature to confirm sign off.

Using this software Hoppecke can proactively plan its engineers' workloads, while added advantages to the business include improved cost allocation and stock control. The latest upgrade, currently in progress, is expected to boost health and safety compliance, since Hoppecke's engineers will be able to conduct risk assessments and, where appropriate, link method statements and images to individual jobs.

The sales app enables Hoppecke's field sales force working across the motive power, special and reserve power sectors to access a wide variety of resources, including a library of key documents, videos, brochures and presentations.

These can be shared with customers to reinforce the benefits of Hoppecke's innovative battery technology and address specific queries. The UK is the first Hoppecke subsidiary business to pilot and implement the new sales app, which went live in June.

consistency across all areas of our business so are capitalising on the latest advances in IT to improve efficiencies and enhance the customer experience.

Irving Equipment Uses Hydra-Slide Low Profile Skidding System For Dryer Change-Out

A 350-ton capacity Hydra-Slide low profile hydraulic skidding system was used to change-out a Yankee dryer at a facility in New Brunswick, eastern Canada, recently. The LP350 was utilized by heavy lifting and specialized rigging business, Irving Equipment.

Affiliated company Irving Tissue, a tissue production firm, had a requirement to remove a 55-ton dryer and replace in kind. Both systems were 12 ft. 5 in.-diameter and 13 ft. 4 in.long cylinders with 4 ft.-long shafts sticking out of either end.

Irving was responsible for all movements of the outgoing and incoming units.

Ryan Long, operations manager for southern New Brunswick and Nova Scotia at Irving Equipment, explained that the scope of work presented four standout challenges, namely travel route, second floor location of the dryer, floor strength, and tight confines for blocking up the loads.

In addition to the LP350, Irving employed an Enerpac EVO power pack system and four 50-ton capacity jacks for vertical jacking of the dryer; a pair of 8-ton capacity Broderson carry decks for material handling; and a 250-ton capacity Liebherr LTM1200 all-terrain crane, used to hoist the Yankee off the second-floor temporary mezzanine that the dryer was slid out onto.

Long outlined those challenges in greater detail. Since the dryer was a primary component of an existing in-line paper machine, he said, it was deeply embedded within the plant and required the project team to make three directional changes and three elevation changes to avoid existing infrastructure.

Long added: “As the dryer was on the second floor of the plant, in order to get it to ground level a temporary mezzanine was designed and installed outside of the plant at the same elevation as the sliding system, and the back wall of the plant was removed. This allowed us to slide the dryer completely outside of the building and onto the mezzanine before lifting it off with our Liebherr LTM1200.”

It was determined that the concrete floor of the building could not support the loads that would be imposed by the dryer as it travelled along its path. In order to mitigate this, a steel grillage system was engineered and installed to bridge the floor between supporting columns under the floor for the entire route. Since the dryer removal was part of a larger overall shutdown, the grillage system had to be installed in a sequence that didn’t impede that scope of work.

Innovative solution The underside of the installed dryer was approximately 5 ft. off of the floor, which made for a considerable amount of blocking to be done when lowering it down to the floor.

“Combined with the awkward 5 ft. of space, we knew it would be time-consuming and hard on the rigging crew to do all of that work while hunched over,” Long said. “It screamed soft tissue injury! To overcome this, one of our team members [Mike Neill] hatched the idea for a very clever ratcheting jackpost design that eliminated the need for blocking.”

The LP350 eliminated the need to remove a roof section and lift out the dryer with a 500-ton capacity class crawler crane, which would have added significant mobilization and crane pad costs. The Hydra-Slide system was compact and easy to use within the tight confines of the plant. The method also facilitated the three required directional changes in 31 ft., 38 ft., and 135 ft. increments, with the aforementioned elevation changes along the way.

The slides took place across two 12-hour shifts. Outside, the LTM1200, part of Irving’s fleet of 100-plus cranes, lifted the dryers with a Modulift spreader beam beneath the hook and slings basketed around the dryer shafts. The paper machine was shut down whilst the dryer was being replaced.

Importance of training Long stressed the importance of training to successful implementation of the LP350, which boasts a total height of less than 1.5 in. (38mm), reduces jacking time, and is ideal for situations where overhead space or clearance is limited,

Long said: “Training is critical to our success; without it we would be doing a disservice to our employees and clients.

The fact that they are personally invested in the quality of their products and clearly have a passion for what they do is very important. Deploy a smart-charging system or face a total collapse of consumer confidence in EVs,” says Off Grid Energy CEO With the power demand from charging electric vehicles too great for the already buckling London power grid, Danny Jones, Founder and CEO of Off Grid Energy - a leading energy technology company - today stressed the importance of battery storage and smart charging systems as the take up in EVs increases exponentially.

Earlier this year, UPS - in conjunction with UK Power Networks Services- installed Off Grid’s UBESS system which had the task of reinforcing the local grid using battery storage to allow the powering up of the company’s fleet of EV delivery vehicles from the current limit of 65 to all 170 vehicles at its Camden depot.

“The primary issue with the Camden installation was that the incoming grid supply was insufficient to support the additional power demands of the new fleet of EVs. The cost of re-enforcing the grid at the substation jeopardised the business case for full electrification of the fleet,” said Jones.

Issues such as these are not exclusive to UPS - EV applications are demanding more power and they need it now. Logistics operations and bus companies are looking to electrify their fleets to help in the fight against

air pollution and climate change but are often held back by a lack of grid capacity.

“At Off Grid, we have the ability to install and have energy storage solutions up and running in a matter of weeks and bring the benefits of battery storage to the fore,” added Jones. “The benefits of deploying these systems are manifold and are absolutely necessary to prevent a delay in EV deployment because of the cost and lead-in times to reinforce the electricity network at substations, not to mention they can start working right away with minimal installation time needed.”

The UBESS battery storage solution from Off Grid can perform other capabilities over and above the primary function of enabling the introduction and maintenance of the EVs. For example, when the depot does not need the power, the unit has the ability to provide energy back to the grid for DSR (demand side response) which is a monetizable service for the electricity network operator. Action plan to manage county's lorry traffic

Paul Irwin A four-year action plan has been launched to look in detail at ways to solve lorry hotspot problems and better manage freight around Buckinghamshire's roads.

It comes with the approval today (Tuesday 19 June) of the County Council's new freight strategy by Mark Shaw, Deputy Leader and Transport Cabinet Member.

"It's a fine balance. We rely on lorries to bring in our food and drink, and take away the waste we produce," said Paul.

"But we also have a responsibility to control the impact HGVs have on our roads and the environment."

At the centre of the action plan are proposals to set up freight focus groups in the County Council's 19 Local Area Forum areas, drawn from parishes, community groups and businesses.

And one of the priorities is to appoint a Freight Officer to liaise between parishes, districts, businesses and County Hall, and manage focus groups.

They will examine heavy goods vehicle (HGV) movement data, along with original strategy consultation feedback from more than 1,600 residents and businesses, to help identify areas that need targeted action and investment.

This could include measures ranging from HGV route signs to installing noise and air quality measures, to liaising with neighbouring councils over HGV bans that affect Buckinghamshire.

The first three focus groups will be set up during the coming weeks in the Wing/Ivinghoe area, the Iver/Denham area and the Haddenham/Waddesdon area. Others will be set up during the following nine months.

Around 17% of lorries coming into Buckinghamshire deliver foodstuffs and about 14% of HGV movements are related to taking away waste from residents and businesses in the county.

The increase in online shopping - up 23 per cent in the past year - has pushed up the number of delivery van miles by 46% in the past 10 years and this trend is expected to continue.

"When it comes to freight management nothing stands still," said Paul. "We're kidding ourselves if we think there's a fixit-once-for-all solution, which is why our freight strategy is a live document. We want focus groups to highlight local issues to help us consider the trends and the changing nature of HGV movements, so we can take the right decisions in the future to balance the need for the efficient distribution of goods and services with the needs of Buckinghamshire’s environment and residents.

"A huge number of residents and business people have helped get Buckinghamshire's Freight Strategy to where it is now, and I'm very grateful for their help," said Paul.

FTA Transport Manager 2018 conferences back and bigger than ever

Onward Holdings Site Fast Tracks Goods For Aspray24 Leading 3PL specialist Aspray24, which makes around 15,000 consignment deliveries a day for clients, has agreed a threeyear extension on the lease for its 30,000sqft warehouse on the Green Lane Industrial Estate.

Plenty of parking space at the Onward Holdings owned site in Featherstone, West Yorkshire, was an appealing feature for Aspray24, to help manage the dramatic increase in haulage traffic due to booming demand for the business’s services.

Why I love the Courier Exchange…

James Gordon spoke to Lee Gueller to find out how a freight exchange platform changed his life forever…

“I get up most mornings at 6am. I always start my day with a coffee and then I’ll check the Courier Exchange App on my phone. I’ve been a member of the Exchange for two years now.

Looking back, signing up, was the best business decision that I have ever made.

Why? Well, without CX, I wouldn’t have my same day courier company, Red Rocket Couriers. I still pinch myself when I think how far the business has come. In the first few weeks and months, it was just me and my van. Now, however, I have three selfemployed drivers working for me, and also have access to CX’s huge virtual fleet, which means that we can arrange pick-up at any time and almost any place in the UK in around 60 minutes.

At around 7am, the CX App on my phone begins to go into over-drive. As we consistently score great feedback from our clients, our services are very much in demand. People I work with often ask me how we manage to secure such positive reviews from those we work with. For me, just like in boxing which I teach at the weekends, the secret to running a profitable same day courier company has its roots in discipline.

At 8am I sit down to work. We take great pride in offering a professional service to our clients. Our vans are equipped to take anything from sensitive documents to pallets of timber. We never co-load, and we never take two packages going to different locations in the same van - even if clients give us the green light to do so. Our customers are paying for a same day direct service and we make sure that this is what they will always get.

But, it’s not just about delivering on time, it’s about listening to customers and also the guys who work for me. They work on the front lines and know what’s going on, and often their feedback is invaluable in making our service even better than it is.

It may seem obvious too, but being courteous and communicative to customers, from the second the job is won to when the goods are delivered, is incredibly important. However, in an industry where time is quite literally money, you’d be amazed how many courier firms forget this basic rule.

But looking back, the App has been a real game changer for me in so many different ways. I really like the fact that it’s so simple to use and is really responsive. The fact that live alerts come through in real time, for example, is often the difference between winning a load and missing out.

I also believe that the App has not only levelled the playing field in this way, but also gives my drivers something that is much more precious – job certainty. For instance, last week, I sent one of my guys down to Heathrow. Before he left, we let everyone on the Exchange know his ETA, and just before he set out, we won a backload. But even if we don’t secure a backhaul in advance, our customers are able to track our position on the Live Availability Map, while drivers receive regular load match updates on the journey home. So 99% of the time, they return to base driving fully-laden vans, which is good for them, me and the environment too.

In terms of communication, the CX App helps us greatly in this respect. As soon as my drivers accept a load, they switch on the ‘on my way to pick up’ feature, which shows their live position on a real time map to everyone involved in the delivery. This means that my drivers never get angry calls from clients asking them where they are, and when the goods will be delivered.

Bill Reid’s Volvo Lorries is the latest in this current series of book reviews from Amberley Publishing. Featuring 96 pages and 180 illustrations, this book records the introduction of Volvo trucks to the UK market and the subsequent growth and success of the marque to the present day.

Volvo lorries first came to the British roads in 1967 after a former road haulier, Jim McKelvie, saw the need for better trucks than UK manufacturers were producing at the time. Following that, McKelvie imported the F86 model as a 30/32-ton artic unit and it took the UK market by storm.

This paperback book is a great read for any truck enthusiasts and predominantly any Volvo fans. On page 40 you can find our personal favourite, a 1984 Volvo F6 from the former Macaskill of Stornoway fleet that was – as the wording on the side says – used on distribution in the Highlands of Scotland.

The Gig Economy You have no doubt heard this in the news or on social media and basically it covers people who work on occasion under a self employed basis (but aren’t always what they seem). Annual Leave Calculations There has been a lot of changes with respect to how holidays are calculated and how far back workers can claim them if they haven’t been paid or have been paid incorrectly.

Dress Code There has been two recent cases which have brought dress code into the limelight:Bougnaoui v Micropole Univers C-188/15 The ECJ held that an employee's dismissal for wearing an Islamic headscarf at work, in breach of a direct instruction following a customer's objection to her wearing the headscarf, was directly discriminatory on grounds of religion or belief.

Nicola Thorpe v PWC, surprisingly went in the Employer’s favour meaning that employers can continue to insist that female employees wear heels, providing it is considered a job requirement and men are made to dress to an "equivalent level of smartness" On 17 May 2018, the Government Equalities Office published guidance on dress codes and sex discrimination.

The all new 2018 compact crossover SUV from Subaru far exceeds their previous XV model which was released in 2012. It is more spacious, has a stunning design and just far better worth for the money you spend on it.

Exterior There are 6 body colour options including: Crystal White Pearl, Pure Red, Ice Silver Metallic, Quartz Blue Pearl, Dark Grey Metallic and Cool Grey Khaki. We drove the Quartz Blue Pearl and it was a beautiful colour that rally complimented the design of the car and the black trim.

that gives the driver and all passengers a lot of room for comfortable long journeys. There was a lot of headroom for the driver who is about 5’9. The boot space was average for the size of the vehicle but the back seats fold down if you do need more room.

The seats were fabric and looked quite comfortable. However they felt a bit firm and uncomfortable especially on longer drives. The steering wheel and gearshift knob are leather wrapped making them very easy to grip and control.

It has 18” alloy wheels that raised the car quite high off the ground helping the look of a SUV. The headlights were a really nice shape and the car comes with High Beam Assist which automatically adjusts the lights during the night so that you get the maximum visibility without disturbing other driver’s.

Technology Like most modern cars the Subaru XV was kitted out with a lot of the latest technology like the start & stop system.

It also has EyeSight which is Subaru’s driver assist technology. EyeSight uses multiple factors and technologies to attempt to reduce the risk of a collision and if unavoidable it attempts to reduce accident severity.

Interior Inside the car is a very spacious design

The lane detection didn’t seem that good. As you approached the line it

would abruptly jolt you across to the other side and it felt very uneasy as a driver. The centre console has an 8inch touch screen infotainment centre that is incredibly easy and simple to use.

Performance It was nothing overly exciting to drive. It is more designed as a built up family car or for traveling. It was a 2 litre engine that went from 0-62 in 10.4 seconds.

It has a max speed of 120mph and an average fuel consumption of 40.9 miles per gallon. For the size of the car the C02 emissions seemed surprisingly good with it being 155 g/km.

The Subaru XV starts around £28,495.

But with its spacious design and use its technology the journeys were relaxed and somewhat comfortable. However, the seats got a bit uncomfortable at times and there wasn’t much excitement from the performance. This would be a fantastic family car especially for those who love to travel.

OnTruck Receives 25 Million Euros From Investors

O

nTruck, a Spanish business started back in 2016 by a group of established businessmen, is an online platform that uses technology to reduce the inefficiencies of the road freight industry. The company expanded to the UK back in September 2017, and since its launch the UK branch has delivered over 3,000 orders.

The business takes a unique view on the haulage industry by looking at where current drivers could improve both economically and environmentally.

David Jennison, UK Managing Director, said, “There are 19 billion road miles covered in the UK every year. One in three of those are done empty and for

the other two thirds the loading is only at 68% capacity.”

“Road freight vehicles account for 18% of the CO2 emissions in the UK. And for over half the time those vehicles are running, they’re not earning money.

shipment information laid out in one place. There is no bidding, they get a good price and they get to choose whether to accept the shipment or not. This also makes it a much better experience for the drivers who want to choose the type of haulage that they will carry.”

Drivers only move general haulage and ambient palletised haulage, so they do not need to handle hazardous or temperature controlled shipments.

OnTruck is also there to provide training and education for drivers to help them understand what shippers want and need.

The company aims to create a high quality, communitydriven approach to road freight. David added, “At OnTruck, we operate similarly to Amazon. We are optimising for long-term value focusing on economics, to ensure that we have a sustainable and scalable business even when we get big investments.”

David said that it was a “huge achievement” not only to be recognised by the likes of Atomico and Indinvest, but for them to believe in the OnTruck mission.

The biggest question from most haulage businesses at the moment is around what will happen after Brexit. David explained that as all of OnTruck’s orders are domestic freight at present, they do not cross borders and so border control may not affect the business. However, David said, “A lot of the hauliers in the UK are non-UK nationals who may have limits put on their ability to work here, which will have a big impact on the haulage community as a whole.”

The future of OnTruck looks bright, with plans to expand into at least one more European country by the end of the year. The electronics wholesaler, ECOMAL Europe GmbH, will be using more Picavi smart glasses at its European central warehouse from the third quarter of 2018 onwards. This is because the company is extending the field of activities used by the pick-by-vision solution in the past at its logistics centre in Kirchzarten. Up to now, the warehouse specialists have used ten pairs of the glasses for picking outgoing goods – now the glasses will be deployed for incoming goods too. ECOMAL is hoping to achieve a significant reduction in the error rate when putting items into storage by using the Picavi products in this area.

ECOMAL, a sales company for electronic components that operates in 17 different countries in Europe, has been working with the pick-by-vision solution from Picavi since the late summer of 2017. Ten pairs of smart glasses are in use from 7 a.m. until 8 p.m. and enable the warehouse specialists to pick items like resistors, semiconductor diodes or capacitors for dispatch from the warehouse stocks that comprise 2.5 billion components. The recipients of the packages sent from the ECOMAL central warehouse, which is located in the southern Black Forest area, include companies in the automotive sector, the semiconductor industry or those assembling circuit boards.

“We’ve been able to achieve time savings of at least 20 percent by using the Picavi smart glasses for our multiorder picking system covering different products. As part of the ongoing digitalisation of our warehouse management procedures, we’ve purchased even more models to switch our incoming goods to the pick-by-vision technology too,” says Peter Kraus, Logistics Manager at ECOMAL, explaining the latest development. “We’ve made one or two mistakes in the past and they’ve caused a fairly long search process.

This will now be a thing of the past when we put items into storage with the Picavi smart glasses; they indicate where the correct warehouse position is on the display and the relevant information is then stored in the warehouse management system.”

“ECOMAL is a clear example of how we can continue developing a partnership, which started in one area of a warehouse, into a different one. The strictly visual process controls of the pick-by-vision solution can be used for many activities in internal logistics in order to increase the precision of the work and make time savings when picking items,” says Johanna Bellenberg, Director of Marketing and Communications at Picavi, underlining the benefits. “Warehouse specialists can concentrate on the correct place for storing or removing the goods, particularly because they have their hands free.

MORRISONS AWARDS NEW SIX YEAR LOGISTICS CONTRACT TO DHL D

HL Supply Chain has been awarded a new contract

by Morrisons to manage its wholesale logistics operations for six years.

Building on its 20-plus year partnership, the new contract will see DHL support the retailer with order fulfilment, store delivery and IT services to serve its wholesale operations, starting with 1,650 stores in the McColl’s Retail Group, exclusively served by Morrisons under its Safeway wholesale brand.

Morrisons is the UK’s fourth largest supermarket group and the second largest fresh food producer. By moving into the wholesale market, Morrisons is leveraging its existing assets to access the UK’s growing convenience market.

The operation will require 200,000 sq ft of warehousing space and 200 vehicles from five strategically located picking centres, in Bury, Lutterworth, Livingston, Bridgewater and Allington. The contract will create 550 new jobs.

DHL was appointed for its proven expertise in the fastpaced grocery and convenience sector as well as its IT capabilities and infrastructure.

Oil Distribution Industry Driver Of The Year 2018 Winner Revealed A

tanker driver for Buckinghamshire-based oil distribution company Lovell Fuels has won the FPS OAMPS Hazardous Industries Driver Of The Year 2018 Award, the heating oil trade association Federation of Petroleum Suppliers (FPS) has revealed during its recent industry event.

Clifford Tappin of Lovell Fuels, Buckinghamshire, has been named Driver Of The Year 2018 in the annual competition run by the FPS to find the finest tanker driver in the UK and Republic of Ireland.

Runner up in 2017, Clifford Tappin was recently revealed as this year's winner during the industry event FPS EXPO 2018 in Liverpool. James Flynn of Ribble Fuels and Bernhard Fuller of New Era Fuels were awarded runner up prizes for all their hard work and great achievements during the last year.

"The standard set by all the nominated tanker drivers is always incredibly high and this year was no exception, but for us Clifford Tappin stood out as going above and beyond in his work," explains Tony Brown, FPS Technical Manager and Driver of The Year Awards judge.

"We were impressed by Clifford last year, which is why we awarded him the joint runner up prize, but he won the competition this year thanks to his impressive commitment to his job - his driving professionalism, quality of work, customer care and motivation are inspiring to witness.

"Nothing is too much trouble for him. He always completes his workload and then is happy to take on more. He takes great care of his customers, understanding the importance of customer care, and is proactive with sales for new customers - winning them over and then working hard to keep them happy with their chosen products and services going forward.

"Clifford has had a great year and we've no doubt he'll continue to work at this high standard long into the future - which is why we were proud to present him with the Driver Of The Year 2018 winner's glass trophy and ÂŁ1,000 prize money. The runners up, James and Bernhard, impressed us too and were awarded the runners up glass trophy and ÂŁ250 each."

osses at Stalkers Transport Services are celebrating after picking up a national trophy at the Family Business of the Year Awards.

The Brampton-based company, which is celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2018, were named Family Business of the Year: Transport and Logistics during the glittering event at London’s May Fair Hotel.

Having won the category at the Cumbria Family Business Awards back in March, brother and sister management team, Karen and David Stalker were thrilled to have replicated their success on the national stage.

Managing Director Karen, said: “We couldn’t be happier to have received this accolade - especially in our 50th anniversary year.

“It’s a huge pat on the back and massive thank you to our amazing staff who work together to make this company as great as it is. We’re so proud of them all.

“We pride ourselves on being a genuine third generation family business and are committed to the business continuing to grow and succeed from a foundation of good old-fashioned family values and hard work.”

Paul Andrews, founder and managing director of Family Business United who run the National Family Business of the Year Awards, said the Transport and Logistics category was a particularly strong one.

It has been five years since Karen and David took charge of the haulage firm following the death of their father, Hughie in 2013. It was their grandfather, Edward who started the firm back in 1968, using his first heavy goods vehicle to carry stones from quarries across Cumbria for the construction of the new M6 motorway.

Having faced some serious and complex issues – a low point seeing them being offered just £1 for the business from a prominent Dragon’s Den star, which they politely declined! - Karen and David have built a reputation for being resilient, determined and people-focused.

A dedicated depot staff are testament to this with six traffic operators notching up 114 years of service between them - a shining example of Stalkers’ low staff turnover.

Meanwhile many of the firm’s customers have also remained loyal for decades; rewarding the company for its focus on high levels of customer satisfaction.

Stalkers currently employs almost 100 staff and operates a fleet of 60 vehicles 24 hours a day, seven days a week and boasts state of the art technology throughout the business while remaining committed to its family values foundations.

Since taking the reins at the company, Karen and David Stalker have presided over a series of strategic developments and investments.

“As winners, Stalkers have demonstrated resilience, strength and positivity in taking the business forward with a focused desire of creating a great firm,” he said.

In 2015, the logo was redesigned, the entire fleet was re-branded and a vibrant new website was launched alongside social media accounts to raise the Stalkers profile.

“Maintaining good old-fashioned family values whilst delivering a first class service to loyal customers, they have come from a humble beginning starting out with just one truck to become a shining example of how hard work, tenacity, pride and family pull together and succeed.

Pre-tax profits in 2016 were £268,000; a remarkable turnaround from the £600,000 losses posted in 2011.

In 2018, the company form part of the Cumbria Transport Group. CTG works with Cumbria LEP as the expert panel in its research to develop a sector skills plan for logistics, an area that Karen is passionate about given the locally intensified shortage of qualified drivers. s part of its continuous growth and expansion, Woodside Logistics Group has expanded its fleet with twenty-seven new Volvo FH tractor units from Dennison Commercials. The new trucks will be serving different areas of the business, which has been operating for over fifty years and one of the UK and Ireland’s leading distribution, haulage and logistics companies.

Woodside Haulage will take delivery of twenty-three of the new Volvo FH 460 tractor units, which are all fitted with full active safety packages, fridge freezers, plus media packs which include TomTom SatNav and Volvo’s own Dynafleet telematics system. For use on general haulage duties across Great Britain and Ireland, the trucks have all been spec’ed with Globetrotter XL cabs, and specifically ordered with the drivers’ well-being in mind by providing secure and comfortable accommodation with greater storage space.

Boat transport specialists see increase in workload

ent based boat transport specialists, Boat Shift have recently had an influx of work and have been focusing on recruiting new staff to meet their clients needs.

The company was founded in 2006 by Simon Butler and his father Peter. Boat Shift became limited in 2010. They currently have three employees and have just taken on a full time driver.

They specialise in transporting boat and yachts around Europe.

They have a small fleet for their specialised distribution which consists of two tractor units, three trailers and one LCV. All of their vehicles are manufactured by Renault that are euro 5 and 6. Simon Butler, Managing Director, said, “Our next investment to our fleet will likely be in trailers.”

They use a subcontractor to ensure they can meet their clients needs.

They distribute the boats throughout Europe but mostly they take their

haulage through France, Spain, Belgium and Holland.

Due to the business carrying specialised haulage and deal with marinas they must take the health and safety precautions that the marinas enforce when loading and unloading the vehicles. They also don’t actively enforce any environmental policies but they prioritise achieving high fuel return figures for all vehicles.

Simon said, “We have been very lucky until the brexit vote which had a huge immediate negative effect on our business. We have since recovered and hope things progress as they are.”

He added, “I think leaving the EU could have a very bad effect on UK hauliers carrying out European work.

To the point of not being viable. Will we move to operate from elsewhere?

Who knows.”

Their business has been running for 12 years in June. In the last 12 months they have had a large increase in their client base. Simon said, “several hauliers have ceased, creating a slightly smaller base of specialist providers which has increased our workload.”

Their short term plans for the future are to maximise their availability and book as much work as possible. For the long term they plan to have both trucks and pilot van out on a continuous basis, possibly taking on another staff member.
