INTEGRATION OF BIODIVERSITY, CONSERVATION AND CLIMATE CHANGE IN SCHOOL CURRICULA IN KAFA BIOSPHERE RESERVE, ETHIOPIA
„Sustainable development meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.“ (Classical definition of the Brundtland Commission, 1987) Sustainability takes care of: • natural environment • economic viability • social equity
Everything that we need in life can be found in the three columns of sustainability.
Renewable resources are sustainable because they are replenished by the environment over relatively short periods of time. Examples are: • oxygen • fresh water • solar energy • animals &plants We need energy for our day to day living. Energy resources can be divided into renewable and non-renewable: renewable energy: • sun • wind • water • biogas • wood
non-renewable energy: • gas • oil • coal • nuclear energy Sun energy is an example for renewable and sustainable resources.
Managed in a sustainable way, renewable resources can be used as much as we need them. The example shows the difference of managing cattle in a not sustainable and a sustainable way. The first picture shows a herd of cattle. If too many individuals of the herd are taken out, there is no chance for them to replenish. The management of the herd in picture two is not sustainable. In the third picture there are still enough individuals left for the herd to recover. The management of the herd in picture three is sustainable:
