Nutrition Program Explore Kindergartners learn about healthy foods, habits in Two Bite Club In the Two Bite Club, kindergartners are asked to do four things: look with their eyes, smell with their nose, listen with their ears and taste with their mouths. It’s a four-step process to trying and eating new, healthy foods, said Sherri Hull, nutrition educator in the Greene County SNAP-ed Nutrition Education Program, housed within the University of Missouri Extension. “At this age, all we want to do is encourage students to try new foods that may be different then what they’re used to,” said Hull. “Over the course of four lessons, they discover new foods and hopefully, learn about healthy foods and healthy habits.” All summer long, Hull and another Greene County nutrition educator, Myra Dickensheet, are leading 30-minute nutrition classes for kindergartners at 12 Explore sites. Her four, interactive lessons feature a puppet named Chef, activities and stories about healthy foods and a special taste test, encouraging students to explore their senses. “I do think they get a lot of good information about how to eat healthy and have good hygiene, like washing their hands,” said Lydia Hedden, a kindergarten teacher at Weaver. “She brings in foods that they wouldn’t get to try otherwise, and they enjoy them.” At the end of a dramatic reading of “Rabbit Food,” kindergartners were taught how to use a sanitization wipe to cleanse their hands. Then, they took two bites of two extension.missouri.edu

fresh vegetables: a sugar snap pea and a carrot, a favorite among the class. “I love carrots,” said kindergartner Elsie Holland. “This one tastes cold. I like it a lot, and rabbits like carrots, too.” After taking two bites, students are encouraged to finish their vegetable snack -but never required, building student autonomy to make good choices for a lifetime. Hull always reminds her students to try and try again, a lesson she shares with K-5 students when she comes back during the school year. “I’ve been doing this for 13 years, and I have fifth-graders who come up to me and ask me if they can see Chef and remember many activities from past lessons,” said Hull. “The students respond to Chef, and through my puppet, they look at food in a different way. That makes a difference.”

“I do think they get a lot of good information about how to eat healthy and have good hygiene, like washing their hands.”

- Lydia Hedden, kindergarten teacher, Weaver
