Council minutes MINUTES OF THE UNIVERSITY EXTENSION COUNCIL OF GREENE COUNTY Date: Tuesday, May 26, 2020 Place: Via Zoom Meeting Attendees: Larry Adams, Tony Ahart, Morgan Ash, Lisa Bakerink, Harold Bengsch, Greg Boehne, Chad Courtney, Karen Dowdy, Alex Greiwe, Tyler Gunlock, Brandon Hebbert, Joseph Hoffman, Ray Meyer, Chris Schultz, Rick Stenberg, Eric Sutton and Jason Whitesell.

Guest Lindy K., from Boys and Girls Clubs attended.

The meeting was called to order at 12:03 pm, by Council Chair, Greg Boehne, who welcomed those in attendance, and the Pledge of Allegiance was recited. Secretary Morgan Ash called roll and it was determined that a quorum was present.

Consent Agenda: A motion was made by Rick Stenberg and was seconded by Joseph Hoffman, to approve the Consent Agenda including the April meeting minutes, and April Treasurer’s report and bills to be paid for the month. Motion to approve passed by unanimous vote.

Staff Reports: Amber Allen is developing her partnership with Boys and Girls Clubs over the summer. Kelsa Ferguson is continuing with virtual classes at some locations and is doing a grocery store tour online. She is working on a virtual Tai Chi class to be released soon. Amy Patillo ended her workforce rally. The workforce transitions rally starts tomorrow and will have 20 sessions. Maggie Black has had appointments with people to test canners and to drop off soil tests. Sherri Hull has been reviewing youth curriculum and has been working with Kelsa Ferguson on cooking matters classes.

New Business: Copier: The new copier was delivered on Thursday. American Business Systems agreed that a refund was due and sent a check for $13.

However, the refund should be for $900. This resulted after a Better Business Bureau complaint was filed.

June Meeting: A motion was made by Jason Whitesell and was seconded by Karen Dowdy, to hold the June meeting via Zoom. Motion to approve passed by unanimous vote. There is no July meeting scheduled.

Committee Reports: Century Farms Committee: There are no applicants this year.

Elections and Nominations Committee: Did not meet.

Budget and Audit Committee: No new report.

Commission Ag Tour Committee: Still waiting on a decision if event will be held.

Founder’s Day and Annual Meeting Committee: No new information.

Leadership and Council Development Committee: No new information.

Personnel Committee: Recommendation to delay opening of office to public. Entered closed session at 12:26 pm.

Harold Bengsch moved to exit closed session and to adjourn the meeting at 1:00 pm and Joseph Hoffman seconded the motion. The idea passed unanimously.

Monthly Spotlight Amber Allen: Impact Through Human Development & Family Science in Greene County

knew now more than ever families needed to know they are strong and resilient. Within my role in Extension I was able to provide education and resources to families quickly through virtual programming.”

Through this program we have given tools to parents to apply within their own families.

One parent following the training stated “The MU Extension program has given me opportunities to slow down and think about ways to better my family and myself. The virtual strong families and managing stress events were great resources for me. Sometimes you think "duh, of course I have to manage stress so it doesn't affect my family." However, life gets crazy and I never thought about checking in with my kids with the questions they asked. That very night, I put it into practice and my husband and I both learned some ways our kids see us. It is a great reminder about slowing down.”

Human Development & Family Science Field Specialist Amber Allen’s goal is to provide multifaceted programming across the lifespan that educates participants on topics related to them as an individual; interpersonal relationships; and brings understanding to individuals that they are connected to the communities they engage with daily. Her hope is long-term program impact will foster community engagement, increase community collaboration and shift community and social norms.

Unprecedented times have allowed the Human Development & Family Science Specialist to build unique relationships/ Continued on next page. partnerships and serve the community of Greene County in new and innovated ways. She has provided 70 sessions of programming through 30 programs to a total of to a total 574 unduplicated participants of those 289 were Greene County residents.

One of those unique partnerships that happened this calendar year is with Boys and Girls Club of Springfield 5 club sites to provide Building Strong Families to parents and staff. Extension was able to provide the Family Strength module in April and Managing Stress module in May. According to Amber Allen, “This partnership was forming between the organizations at the beginning of March and a week after this meeting took place we were put into a new normal. We had originally scheduled a family engagement night for in-person in late May however the new circumstances gave us a new timeline. When the clubs were having to close due to Covid-19 we met quickly to Kelsa Ferguson and Amber Allen at the Call to create a plan to bring Building Strong Care for Kids Conference .

Member Spotlight This program was adapted to an online format to help build resilient families and fulfill a community need. Niki Kiruki, Director of Programs and Prevention for Boys & Girls Clubs Springfield stated “Even though it was virtual, Amber made it very interactive and we had great participation.

Parents were able to interact in the chat or speak. We had several parents ask questions and asked for more training like this in the future. Amber is a wealth of knowledge for our families.” Moving forward we will continue this partnership both virtually and in-person to help families in the community.

The above partnership is just one of the many highlights from this year. Other human development and family science highlights from this year include:  Presenting to 85 child care providers at the Call the Care for Kids Conference on the benefits of using music in the child care setting.

Partnering with the Alzheimer’s Association on their first virtual version of 10 Warning Signs presenting to 135 participants.  Assisting a University of Missouri Social Work Assistant Teaching Professor in the Research: Strengthening protection for intimate partner violence survivors during COVID-19 through online social support groups by connecting her to local southwest domestic violence shelters.  64 Facebook post have been published to the Greene County Extension Facebook page using the hashtags #ExtendMU & #Committed2MOFamilies with 21,464 reached and 916 individuals engaged with at least one of the posts.

Human Development and Family Science will continue to provide innovating program to increase impact that will foster community engagement, increase community collaboration and shift community and social norms. 

These were created in late 2019 when we sold the plat books. Tai Chi for Arthritis & Fall Prevention - Virtual

July 8, 2020 - Aug. 28, 2020 Location: Virtual via Zoom—$50 per person Tai Chi for Arthritis and Fall Prevention allows you to express both mind and body, helping you to not only learn a new skill and promote good health, it will help you achieve harmony with yourself and the world around you. Come move with us! This class will take place on Zoom from the comfort of your chosen location. Tai Chi for Arthritis for Fall Prevention is an exercise program recommended by the CDC for fall prevention and for people with arthritis.

The program meets twice a week for eight weeks.

MU Extension offers agriculture town halls online weekly for farmers, gardeners University of Missouri Extension is offering weekly online town hall meetings led by agronomy, livestock and horticulture specialists.

“MU Extension has is a trusted and necessary resource to help Missourians get food on the table and gardens in the backyard,” says Lee Miller, coordinator of MU’s Integrated Pest Management program.

State and regional extension specialists are hosting the weekly town hall question-andanswer sessions.

Weekly times and topics  Home horticulture: Wednesdays, 11 a.m.-noon.  Commercial horticulture: Wednesdays, noon-1 p.m.  Forages and livestock: Thur sdays, noon-1 p.m.  Field crops: Fr idays, 7-8 a.m.

The sessions offer easy access and will be held using the Zoom teleconferencing system.
