Quality, Local Leadership Training The Neighborhood Leadership Academy replaces MU Extension’s community leadership and EXCEL leadership programs. NLA includes those that had previously enrolled in Leadership Ash Grove and Leadership Republic for 2020.

NLA provides in-depth leadership training that emphasizes community building principles and strategies, organizational leadership and management practices and personal leadership skills.  10 sessions, August 24 - November 2, 2020  Sessions are held virtually on Mondays  Taught by top Extension’s instructors.

NLA will be offered Statewide this year! Academy participants may be neighborhood association members, community-based organization staff, resident volunteers or municipal elected officials.

Council minutes MINUTES OF THE UNIVERSITY EXTENSION COUNCIL OF GREENE COUNTY

The meeting was called to order at 12:02 pm, by Council Chair, Greg Boehne, who welcomed those in attendance, and the Pledge of Allegiance was recited. Secretary Morgan Ash called roll and a quorum was present.

Consent Agenda: A motion was made by Harold Bengsch and was seconded by Lisa Bakerink, to approve the May meeting minutes, and May Treasurer’s report.

Motion to approve passed by unanimous vote.

A motion was made by Rick Stenberg and was seconded by Jason Whitesell, to approve the bills and checks to be paid for the month.

Staff Reports: Kelly McGowan has been participating in statewide programs and townhalls. The statewide pollinators class is wrapping up and more localized classes will start soon. Kelsa Ferguson has two Taking Care of You classes are wrapping up with Amber Allen.

A grant has been applied for and there has been a lot of pressure testing on canning equipment.

Tai Chi and chronic disease classes are coming soon. Amber Allen has one more Taking Care of You class. A webinar and balance class is coming soon. Myra Dickensheet and Sherri Hull have been teaching Kids In the Kitchen class in Lawrence and in Barry Counties. Commercial Street farmer’s market and Life 360 events to educate and answer questions. At this point it is uncertain what will happen with in person classes at SPS when the school year starts.

Justice program. Special curriculum has been requested from Karla Deaver. Twenty-One Qualities of a Leader, an Engaged Neighbor class and statewide neighbor leadership academy begin in August.

Old Business: Resource Development Plan: Weekly meetings on grant applications and possible submissions are taking place. There are five applications underway.

Copier: The new copier is up and running.

Campus funds have been used to purchase it. It is a $100 per month less expense.

New Business: Park Board MOU: There will hopefully be a resolution soon, although there is nothing formal yet. Discussions are occurring.

Committee Reports: Budget Committee: The most in-depth audit performed in years. Suggestions have been made for improvement. The Master Naturalists and Master Gardeners cannot have their own EIN due to an IRS 2019 law that will require a personal SSN. Oversight procedure has been recommended.

A motion was made by Morgan Ash and was seconded by Joseph Hoffman, to accept the audit report as written. Motion to approve passed by unanimous vote.

Personnel Committee: The office manager resigned and an office management plan without a staff position is being crafted. An MOU for bookkeeping with Christian County is being reached and may be complete by August.

There is no July meeting. The August meeting will be held on Monday, August 31st at noon.

Jason Whitesell moved to adjourn the meeting at 12:29 pm and Joseph Hoffman seconded the motion. The idea passed unanimously.

Community Development Greene County Names 30 to CARES Act Relief Fund Advisory Council The Greene County Commission has announced the newly appointed members of the CARES Act Relief Fund Advisory Council, the funding category allotments, general application details and updates on the ongoing CARES grant processes.

Congress passed the Coronavirus Relief Fund to provide funding to states, territories and tribal governments. The goal is to promote recovery by funding programs and services that support the needs of those impacted by COVID-19. Greene County has received $34.4 million to be distributed back into our community to help support local coronavirus response efforts.

To help ensure a fair and equitable allocation of these funds, the Greene County Commission has appointed a citizen advisory council to bring their expertise to the CARES Act Relief Fund review and approval process. The 30-member advisory council will be divided into subcommittees to review applications according to five categories: not-for-profit/community organizations, health care, small businesses, education and taxpayer supported entities.

Members will review and score applications, then forward them to the Commission for final approval. They will use guidance the U.S. Treasury Department for eligible spending categories and priorities set by the Greene County Commission in funding decisions. The application tracking and documents help the County fulfill its auditing and management responsibilities to the U.S. Treasury.

Master Gardeners

Registration open for online Master Gardener training Even in the era of COVID-19, Master Gardener learning options continue to grow.

Registration is open for online core training classes through University of Missouri Extension. Classes begin Aug. 23 and run through Dec. 31, said David Trinklein, Missouri Master Gardener program coordinator.

In the past, those interested in becoming Master Gardeners had to attend weeks of classes. But, traveling to a bricks-and-mortar classroom is not practical for everyone. So online classes were born in 2013.

Using an online learning platform called Canvas, MU Extension horticulturists deliver classes as a series of scripted and narrated PowerPoint presentations.

“With online training, you can do the class work whenever it is convenient for you,” Trinklein said. “It is accessible 24 hours a day, seven days a week.”

Topics include basic botany, soils and plant nutrition, vegetable gardening, fruit production, plant propagation, insects, plant diseases, landscape plants, landscape design and pesticide safety.

After each module, students are tested on their understanding of the materials.

“Master Gardener trainees are also required to donate 30 hours of service, helping others learn to grow,” said Trinklein. “Local Master Gardener chapters can help online trainees find volunteer positions so they can meet the service hour requirements.”

Once certified, Master Gardeners continue to learn and share. To maintain certification, Master Gardeners are required to do six hours of continuing education and 20 hours of community service each year.

Kelly McGowan, a horticulture specialist with MU Extension, is headquartered in Greene County, coordinates the Master Gardeners of Greene County.

“It has been decided to not host a local master gardener training in Greene County this year due to COVID-19. However, the online version of training is an option. If you know of someone who may be interested, please let them know. They should register by Aug. 16. I will be sending a notice to everyone in my file who has shown interest in the training,” said McGowan.

The registration deadline is Aug. 16.

Parenting a Second Time Around (PASTA) PASTA is a parenting program designed for relative caregivers who are not the biological parents of the children in their care.

PASTA provides grandparents and other kinship caregivers with information, skills, and resources designed to enhance their ability to provide effective care for the young relatives they are parenting. PASTA includes topics such as child development, discipline and guidance, caring for oneself as a caregiver, rebuilding a family, living with teens, legal issues, and advocacy.

“MU Extension has is a trusted and necessary resource to help Missourians get food on the table and gardens in the backyard,” says Lee Miller, coordinator of MU’s Integrated Pest Management program.

State and regional extension specialists are hosting the weekly town hall question-andanswer sessions.
