David Burton, county program director, was invited to speak about his organization’s use of the Great Game of Business during the Greene County government huddle. A copy of his presentation is available on the Greene County Extension website under the Great Game of Business link.

“We appreciate the partnership with Greene County,” said Burton. “This presentation was a chance to share some history but also to celebrate were Extension is going thanks to the Great Game of Business.”

After his 15-minute presentation, Burton also fielded a variety of questions from county officials.

Selected Upcoming Extension Events in Greene County “Learn to Grow in the Garden” Series at The Botanical Center Master Gardeners of Greene County offer a “Learn to Grow in the Garden” series of classes at the Botanical Gardens, 2400 S. Scenic, Springfield. Each class is from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. There is a registration fee of $5 per person. ““Seed Saving” will be taught by Patrick Byers, horticulture specialist with MU Extension, 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., Monday, Sept. 14.

“Urban Bee Keeping” will be taught by Ann Kynion, 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., Monday, Oct. 5.

Exploring 4-H (Urban Club) MU Extension and Springfield-Greene County Parks staff are offering an opportunity for youth to explore a variety of 4-H projects and experiences as part of an urban group. This new program is open to children age: 8 to 13.

Activities begin at 4 p.m. on Oct. 21 and will be held the 3rd Wednesday of every month. $25 for 4H enrollment in 4-H. Learn more online at http://extension.missouri.edu/greene.

Salute to Century Farms The second “Salute to Century Farms” will be held Monday, Sept. 28 at the Round Barn Event Center along Clear Creek. Folk and farm music will be provided by Judy Domney.

Attendees will enjoy a meal from Maggie Mae’s and a live auction of items. Tickets can be purchased on our website or at our office and all proceeds benefit the Greene County Extension Council.

Organic Gardening Academy The “Organic Gardening Academy” continues with one final class Sept. 16 on the topic of organic vegetable gardening. Preregistration is necessary by calling the Greene County Extension Center at (417) 881-8909 or emailing Kelly McGowan at mcgowank@missouri.edu.

Sept. 20: Greene County 4-H Foundation Pie Supper The Greene County 4-H Foundation will hots its annual Alumni Reunion and Pie Supper, 2 p.m. to 5:30 p.m., Sept. 20 at the Bond Center at the Darr Agricultural Center, at 2401A, South Kansas Expressway in Springfield. As part of the event, two outstanding 4-H members from each county in southwest Missouri will also be recognized. Doors open at 2 p.m., the awards program and pie auction begins at 3 p.m. The cake wars contest will begin at 2:30 p.m. After the pie supper, alumni are invited to stay after and visit until 5 p.m. We expect the program to end about 5 or 5:30 pm but the alumni visiting hopefully, will go on for a while. (The “Cake Wars” contest for the teams of 2, and a decorated cake contest for members will begin promptly at 2:30). All attendees are invited to contribute a pie or other baked item for the auction.

Nutrition and Food Policy Voices for Food Project Pam is the Project Coordinator for Missouri, and works with several Food Policy Councils and communities to improve food-insecurity.

The project is a sixstate, federally funded research project, drawing on the expertise of multiple disciplines – including nutrition, community development, agriculture and youth, through Extension services. The goal of the community work is to develop and implement sustainable solutions that will increase availability and access to healthy food choices. The majority of Pam’s position is focused on this work, which will last into 2018.

The picture at right is food raised from a 4-H community garden that has been donated to a local Food Pantry.

Food Hub Feasibility Study Pam has been working on Food Hub projects, including a Food Hub Feasibility Study since the fall of 2014. This project and data will serve to inform many producers, businesses, and local food system stakeholders. Pam is partnering with Missouri State University School of Agriculture on this project.

Local Food Projects Pam continued her many local food projects during the month of August, working with producers and organizations to connect, and to support greater availability and access to local food. Preparation is underway for four fall workshops.

Several sites were visited including the turf plots maintained by the Master Gardeners of Greene County. Thirty-three attended, including grounds specialists for area hospitals and schools, lawncare professionals, and homeowners.

Programs Coordinated 8/5-Organic Gardening Academy-Healthy Soils with Patrick Byers 8/25-Organic Gardening AcademySustainable Water Use with Rob Hunt

The Master Gardener Program is a popular and successful statewide volunteer community-service organization administered through University of Missouri Extension. The organization’s goal is to train gardeners who are willing to share their knowledge with others. Master Gardeners become volunteers of University of Missouri Extension and donate hours for community educational projects in horticulture. Volunteer activities include working with non-profit organizations, maintaining community gardens, conducting workshops, participating in a Master Gardener speakers’ bureau and staffing the Master Gardener “Hotline.” The Master Gardeners of Greene County can boast of over 275 members. 4-H Report for Greene County More About 4-H As the largest out-of-school youth organization in the world, 4-H is open to all boys and girls, ages 5 to18.

Children who are five to seven years old are eligible for 4-H Clover Kids, an introductory program. Youths who are 8 to 18 years of age can select from a variety of 4-H projects and activities that stress social and life skills in areas like decision making, communication, social interaction, civic responsibility and physical skills. Children do not have to live on a farm to join 4-H. Project opportunities include computers, robotics, foods and nutrition, horticulture, large and small animals and more.

Human Development, Family and Health Childcare Training on Caregiving Tools Starts Sept. 21 Greene County Extension will offer a series of four workshops on four Monday evenings to address training requirements for childcare and foster care providers.

The workshops will be held from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. in the large classroom at the Springfield-Greene County Botanical Center located at 2400 S. Scenic Ave., Springfield, Mo. Program presenters will be MU Extension specialists Renette Wardlow and Dr. Jim Wirth.

“The classes are geared toward childcare providers, day care owners, Head Start and foster parents as well as parents and those interested in youth,” said Renette Wardlow, human development specialist, MU Extension.

Caregiving Tools is a 12-hour course that teaches self -care tools like reducing personal stress, changing negative self-talk, communicating more effectively in challenging situations, dealing with difficult emotions, and to increase self-efficacy in coping with caregiving demands.

Caregiver Tools 1—Care of Self & Identifying Stress: Sept. 21, 6-9 p.m. Learn about a “box of tools” for taking better care of yourself, learn goal-setting, and the early warning signs of stress.

Housing and Urban Development Specialist Healthy Homes Following the mid-July rains, flooding and the airing of an television interview, several phone inquiries on mold concerns were received.

Two of calls developed into on-site observations were I took a humidity meter, moisture meter and an infrared camera to look for areas of hidden moisture. Both visits resulted in the determination that the homeowners did not appear to have mold colonization, saving them hundreds of dollars in testing and clean-up costs.

As part of the visits, homeowners were encouraged to sign up for a free radon test from the Missouri Division of Health and Senior Services. The results are sent to the homeowner and one reported that the results were well within the acceptable range.

During home energy efficiency programming, discussions address the impact of sealing the home which can occasionally create indoor air quality issues. We offer a 2-hour class that specifically addresses all of the diverse Healthy Homes issues.

Aging-In-Place Cathy Nordyke, The MSU Director of Citizenship and Service-Learning, asked me to speak to her Gerontology class on the innovative housing alternatives and neighborhood issues that support a more vital Aging-in-Place. Students learned about emerging housing patterns and the work of the Community Partnership of the Ozarks – Housing Collaborative work with the City of Springfield and the Neighborhood Advisory Council.

This year I am serving as the Chair of the CPO Housing Collaborative and a participate in the NAC and its subcommittees representing MU Extension and the Rountree Neighborhood.

2015 Community Development Society Conference in Lexington, KY I traveled to the internationally attended meeting to present a talk titled “Balancing Community Voices in Community Visioning”, sharing the methods used by the MU Extension / Drury CCS Collab-

Community Visioning Collaborative The first weekend of the fall semester was spent on an immersion with the Drury CCS architecture students kicking-off Pineville and Anderson visioning efforts. Students toured the renovated the historic McDonald County courthouse, attended the season opener MCHS football game, enjoyed several community meals, met with each community’s Vision Advisory Committee, traveled to the Bentonville Square, slept on cots at the National Guard Armory and enjoyed a float on the Elk River. As the students begin the semester project, this immersion experience helps them build initial rapport with the community and creates a greater sense of context for their study, which works with the community for developing a vision

PACE progresses in SW Missouri I spoke as a panelist at the recent Residential Solar Discussion hosted by the local Sierra Club chapter.

Attendees learned about current Property Assessed Clean Energy (PACE) funding availability in southwest Missouri and emerging residential opportunities.

July 13 Springfield passed the necessary ordinance to their citizens to begin accessing PACE funding. July 20 Greene County also passed their necessary resolution for their unincorporated property owners. Late July, the Springfield City Manager sent a letter to the Missouri Clean Energy District asking for rapid development of a residential option, committing their full support and asking for updates on the progress. This will likely be accelerated following the late August announcement by the Whitehouse.

Initial Springfield / Greene County prospective PACE projects: Battlefield Mall; Large Data Service Center; National Avenue Christian Church; A Catholic Charity Service Site; Microbrewery; Neighborhood Upholstery Shop; Renovated school / neighborhood catalyst center; New Pasture Based dairy milking barn; two local universities; and a large private residence.

Last Updated August 31, 2015 with the Missouri Clean Energy District, I will generate revenue for MU Extension initially at 20 basis points on projects that are developed from PACE. Considering this, each $1,000,000 that we originate will generate $2,000 of specialist revenue.

Additionally, I presented PACE to the McDonald County Commission and supplied information to the mayors of Pineville and Anderson. In conjunction with the fall Drury visioning efforts, I anticipate PACE becoming available to this southwest corner county of Missouri.

E3a: Exploring Energy Efficiency and Alternatives Collaborating with Bob Schultheis, we offered a packed set of sessions in Pineville, covering Home Energy Conservation & Efficiency in the morning and Farm Energy Conservation & Solar in the afternoon. 20 persons that attended the morning session were joined by 8 others in the afternoon.

Empire Electric spoke of their new solar rebate program. Additionally, we made the attendees aware of the Missouri Home Energy Audit tax deduction, other local rebates, USDA programs and the status of PACE funding availability for Southwest Missouri.
