Fearing Firing Guns
I hear we shouldn’t fear guns
I hear we should fear the people who fire guns.
I do fear how our society allows guns to be so easily accessible I do fear that so many people feel the strong need for guns in their homes, offices, cars and on their person.
I hear we shouldn’t fear guns
I hear we should fear the people who fire guns
I am pained by the growing number of lives ended, of lives disturbed and altered by guns that were fired I am pained that more people want more guns when fired guns kill more people
I do fear guns.
I do fear people who fire guns I fear I will never be relieved of this fear as long as I live. I want to live long I want to live without guns I want to live with people who do not fire guns

W hen Pr esidents can’t take a joke, Democr acy suf fer s
By Ben Jealous
(TriceEdneyWire com) -
A Midwestern schoolteacher once told her class that a sense of humor is a sign of intelligence “Look around the classroom she said “The smartest kids always get the joke right away The others might struggle I’ve never confirmed that theory with a doctor But I believe it Humor takes quick thinking It takes perspective It takes freedom
That s why it matters when our presidents can laugh at themselves For generations, they have Reagan turned questions about his age into a punchline Obama roasted himself at the Correspondents’ Dinner Even George W Bush the butt of endless late-night jokes, learned to grin and roll with it
That humility has always set us apart from the monarchy we broke away from Kings demand silence Presidents in a free nation are supposed to be able to laugh along with the people Donald Trump doesn’t get that He can t take a joke and worse he tries to punish the people who make them First Stephen Colbert Now Jimmy Kimmel Using the power of the presidency to go after comedians isn t just petty It’s dangerous Authoritarians hate humor because humor exposes them Stalin, Mussolini every strongman fears the comic more than
the critic A joke spreads fast A sharp one can cut through a wall of propaganda That s why free countries protect comedians They keep leaders honest by refusing to let them take themselves too seriously
We forget: America was born on satire Franklin drew cartoons mocking the British crown Revolutionaries cracked jokes as easily as they fired muskets Laughter was proof that no king could control the American spirit
But when presidents can t laugh at themselves citizens stop laughing too And when citizens stop laughing, they stop questioning That silence is the first step toward submission
This isn’t about whether you watch Jimmy Kimmel or Stephen Colbert It’s about whether you want to live in a country where the president decides which jokes are allowed Today it’s late-night hosts Tomorrow it could be a cartoonist, a college kid, or you for what you post online
The strength of America isn’t that our leaders are above mockery It s that they can survive it A president who can’t take a joke can t take criticism And a president who can’t take criticism can t be trusted with freedom
That Midwestern schoolteacher was right: humor is a sign of intelligence But more than that it’s a sign of liberty And if we want to keep our democracy strong, we better insist on leaders who can laugh even, and especially, at themselves

When does a depiction of history turn into a “corrosive ideology”? When the current administration is working overtime to erase facts about our nation’s history and foundations They want to remove any reminders about the evils of enslavement and its critical role in the development of his country We need to say it repeatedly; there would be no united states without enslavement We build this nation Our labor produced the White House (or The House that Enslaved People Built), the Capitol, and even some of the odious monuments to slaveholding colonialists This is a history that this President would erase
The Washington Post reported that an anonymous source said the administration “has ordered the removal signs and exhibits related to slavery at multiple national parks This is a follow up from the Presi-
dent’s March executive order asking the Interior Department to eliminate information that reflects a “a corrosive ideology”
The Post reports that the National Park Service is removing signs that fail to whitewash our nation’s history The President has said many times that we talk about enslavement too much I say we cannot talk about it often enough Harper ’s Ferry West Virginia is the site of John Brown s failed rebellion against enslavement According to the Post more than 30 signs referring to this history, have been flagged for alteration or removal This desperate attempt to rewrite history is our President s corrosive ideology He promised to fix the economy, and he has not Instead he has fully immersed himself in the culture wars, seemingly prioritizing the culture wars over economic stability
Many people have seen the iconic photograph, The Scourged Back, show the back of a man who was beaten so many times that his back is a painful tapestry of scars It was used, years ago, to promote the film Twelve Years A Slave A copy of that photograph has been part of many exhibits about the Civil War and enslavement It was exhibited at Fort Pulaski National Monument in Georgia but has
been removed because it supposedly was part of corrosive ideology Yet the most corrosive of ideologies is one that cannot stand the truth about our nation s history The socalled Chief Executive Officer of these United States ought to be more interested in the economy than in important historic documents But the corrosive ideology of this administration has restored Confederate monuments, attempted to scrub museums of historical reference, and removed textbooks at the Naval Academy
This Administration fully understands the importance of symbolism, of pomp and circumstance
This may be why the Pr4sidnt would like to rename the Kennedy Center after himself and add his wife’s name to another section of the Center This is why the President will give the murdered conservative activist Charlie Kirk a posthumous Presidential Medal of Freedom This is why Attorney General Pam Bondi whose legal credentials are highly questionable, says she will absolutely target who use hate speech, including any negativity toward Charlie Kirk
The corrosive ideology of this administration is to suppress or to erase Erase the photograph The Scourged Back because it makes some people un-
comfortable Suppress words critical of Charlie Kirk because they aren t sufficiently deferential to a provocative activist who invited criticism This is a delicate time to talk about Charlie Kirk I mourn his murder, am abhorred by the killing of a 31-year old father It would be foolhardy to deny the provocative nature of his work but a detailed analysis of his legacy is premature – those who choose to be critical might, for the sake of decorum, share their views after the man is buried The right-wing political leadership supports free speech if conservatives agree with it A free speech nation would welcome the exhibit of The Scourged Back A free speech nation would not embrace an Executive Order “Restoring Truth in American History” since the purpose of that Executive Order is to suppress truth and whitewash history This is the corrosive ideology of this administration Lie suppress deny our nation’s history And to think we have years more of this corrosive (to use their word) form of government Dr Julianne Malveaux is an economist and author based in Washington DC Juliannemalveaux com

Airing of Quilts in Gee’s Bend
“The festival gives visitors the opportunity to meet quilters learn about the area’s history and become immersed in the area s incredible cultural significance, said Kim V Kelly, executive director of the Freedom Quilting Bee Legacy
The festival which was named to Garden & Gun magazine s 2025 Bucket List, drew 2,100 people to Gee’s Bend in 2024, and organizers expect at least 2 500 visitors this year
Gee s Bend quilters have garnered international fame for their unique quiltmaking, and the festival
honors the community’s history of quilt-making with interactive programming food trucks entertainment and live musical performances Visitors to the Airing of the Quilts also take part in quilting demonstrations and storytelling from the descendants of generations of Gee s Bend quilters
This year s festival features the unveiling of an exhibition dedicated to Dinah Miller (née Jenkins) who was kidnapped in Africa and brought to Alabama in 1860 aboard the last known slave ship to enter U S waters, the
Clotilda The exhibit is titled “Between History and Memory: Dinah Miller ’s Legacy in Gee’s Bend ” Miller settled in Gee s Bend in 1890 and is the earliest known quilter in the area Her descendants rank among the area’s most renowned quilters
“This new exhibition will clearly celebrate Dinah s life, tell her unique and inspirational story, and honor her immense contributions to the Gee’s Bend community ” Kelly said On October 2 during the week before the festival, Freedom Quilting Bee Legacy will also debut its
A political analyst on MSNBC reacting to news of shots fired pointed out that Kirk s own incendiary rhetoric contributed to a violent political climate The news had not yet broken that Kirk was killed or even hit The network fired him before the end of the day
A Washington Post columnist posted on social media that the absolution for white men who espouse hatred and violence” is “part of what keeps America violent The Post called her comments “gross misconduct” that endangered “the physical safety of colleagues and fired her But the Fox News host who called for the execution of mentally ill homeless people still has his job Brian Kilmeade has faced no repercussions The network has not uttered a word to denounce his comments Days after Kilmeade suggested “involuntary lethal injection or something just kill em 13 homeless people were wounded in two separate mass shootings in Minneapolis With its silence Fox not only sanctions the substance of Kilmeade's abhorrent statement but embraces a double standard that glorifies the most
newly designed quilt workshop/learning space and posthumously dedicate the facility to the Reverend Lonnie Brown Jr a community advocate who passed away earlier this year The facility was built thanks to funding from The Daniel Foundation of Alabama and a grant from the Alabama State Council of the Arts
The new workshop space will be open for use and tours during the festival “This facility will give visitors an opportunity to sit down and learn about them, learn about their history and get an intimate
extreme incitement to violence from the right while suppressing valid criticism of the right It s not even a question of whether we want to live under that standard but whether we can While it s hard to believe Kilmeade still has a job after his blatant endorsement of unjustified violence it s even harder to believe considering his long history of inflammatory comments He criticized Americans for inter-cultural marriage while praising the pure genes” of Sweden He falsely claimed “all terrorists are Muslim He dismissed the mistreatment of immigrant families, saying “These aren’t our kids it’s not like [Trump] is doing this to the people of Idaho or Texas He attacked the judge who approved a search warrant against Trump displaying a photoshopped image of Ghislaine Maxwell giving the judge a foot massage Unlike the comments that got Jimmy Kimmel Matthew Dowd, and Karen Attiah fired, Kilmeade’s statements are both hateful and misleading His call to execute the homeless was so shocking, in fact, that some right-leaning social media users refused to believe he even said it
In the days after
lesson in their artistry throughout the year, not just during the festival ” Kelly said The Airing of the Quilts Festival is hosted by organizing sponsors Freedom Quilting Bee Legacy, Sew Gee’s Bend Heritage Builders and Souls Grown
Deep This festival is open to the public
The event is free with a recommended contribution of $40 to support the Gee’s Bend quilt-making community For the second straight year the festival will offer a hop-on/hop-off bus service for $25 that will visit the homes of
Kilmeade’s statement, at least 14 petitions calling for his dismissal sprung up on Change org garnering more than 19,000 signatures Some of the petitioners cite their own experience with homelessness, or the experience of a friend or relative
“I know the struggles of living without a home the fear the uncertainty and the continuous fight for dignity Working with the homeless, I witness their resilience their hopes and their dreams Kilmeade's statement is not just reckless; it is a direct attack on human rights and dignity Such views have no place in our society, especially from a public figure with significant media influence ” Rio Phillips wrote All of the petitions mention the duty of Fox News to demonstrate its commitment to journalistic standards and basic human decency Taking strong action against such conduct is not just a matter of corporate responsibility but a social imperative, petitioner John Davis wrote “By terminating Brian Kilmeade's contract Fox News can affirm its commitment to journalistic integrity and the wellbeing of all individuals regardless of their socio-economic status or health conditions

Senate Sketches #1996.....by Hank Sander s A Time to Celebrate
A time to celebrate
There are times to work
There are times to play
There are times to struggle
There are times to enjoy the journey There are times to plant and cultivate
There are times to harvest
There are times to invest
There are times to cash in The Good Book says there is a time for everything under the Sun A Time to Celebrate
We have a special celebration At the beginning I never even conceived that we could have this special celebration We were just meeting a need But we have endured We have persisted We have been consistent We have been persistent We have been creative All these qualities brought us to this moment in time A Time to Celebrate
We are having the special celebration on October 25 2025 It will be at the Hank Sanders Technology Building on the campus of the Community College in Selma It will be at 5:00 p m Each and every one of you are invited A Time to Celebrate
What is the celebration?
I am glad to tell you We will be celebrating the writing and publication of two thousands editions of Senate Sketches/Sketches
That’s one a week for two thousand consecutive weeks That’s nearly 40 years A Time to Celebrate
When I first entered the Alabama State Senate I kept meeting people who had no idea what I was doing in the Alabama State Senate People were confused about whether I was in Washington, D C or Montgomery or some other place I wanted to do something to help people better understand what an Alabama State Senator did I considered writing something on a regular basis At the same time, Dr Carol Prejean Zippert and John Zippert, Co-Publishers of The Greene County Democrat wanted their readers to better understand as well They asked me to write a weekly column This dovetailed with my thinking This October 18, 2025, The Greene County Democrat will have published all 2,000 editions of Senate Sketches A Time to Celebrate
The very first Senate Sketches was published on April 29, 1987 It mostly listed what I had done that week and with whom I had talked Over the years, Sketches grew into a threepart document: a Prologue; an Interlogue; and an Epilogue In the Prologue, I share my ideas and understandings In the Interlogue I share certain details of persons with whom I communicated and places I visited that week When I started Sketches, I listed people with whom I talked As technology advanced I also shared persons I communicated with in emails and texts I call it The Daily Diary The Epilogue is a very short paragraph at the very end where I try to capture the Spirit of Sketches for that week In the beginning I did not number or title Senate Sketches other than to call them Senate Sketches These and other changes evolved over the nearly four decades A Time to Celebrate In these nearly 40 years I have written about ongoing international national state and local struggles I have written about historical events I have written about personal struggles I have written about hopes and dreams I have written about fears and courage I have written about successes and failures I have written about all kinds of struggles A Time to Celebrate
I once stopped writing the Daily Diary for
Sketches I decided that no one was reading that portion of Senate Sketches Then I was contacted by Dr Carol Prejean Zippert because The Greene County Democrat had received many complaints about the absence of the Daily Diary It turned out that it was the most read part of Sketches People wanted to know with whom I interacted A Time to Celebrate I had great help with Sketches over the years Dr Carol Zippert proofed Sketches for nearly 20 years Gloria Pompey typed Sketches for more than 30 years Sharon Wheeler proofed Sketches for nearly twenty years and was otherwise available Cathi Cross typed Sketches for several of the initial years Recently, Karen Jackson began typing Sketches when Gloria Pompey retired at the end of May 2025 And always reliable Josephine Curtis filled in when anyone was out of pocket At the celebration we want to demonstrate our appreciation for those who provided extensive assistance with Sketches A Time to Celebrate
In these nearly two thousand weeks we have not missed a single week of writing and publishing Sketches John Zippert once said that I was “very consistent and very creative with Sketches He even wondered how I came up with something to write about every week In truth, I was rarely short of matters to write about My struggle was in determining which of multiple matters to write about Of course I could not write about certain matters for private reasons A Time to Celebrate
I wrote Sketches when I was in South Africa Egypt and other countries in Africa I wrote Sketches when I was in China and other countries in Asia I wrote Sketches when I was in Brazil and other countries in South America I wrote Sketches when I was in Mexico and countries in Central America and the Caribbean In fact, the most challenging moment in publishing Sketches occurred when I was in Cuba in the Caribbean There was no way to get Sketches back to the U S so I read Sketches over the phone to Cathi Cross my Secretary at the time She typed as I read I had no opportunity to proof or reread But we did not miss publication A Time to Celebrate
We had a celebration when we reached 1000 editions of Sketches At that time, we could envision 2 000 editions of Sketches because we had reached one half of 2 000 Sometimes in life we do not have to envision the end, just the next edition One week at a time, One day at a time
That’s how we achieved 2,000 editions A Time to Celebrate
I asked my dear wife to take the lead in planning and facilitating the 2 000 Sketches Celebration She is creative in her own right She has written many songs, plays, poems and other writings In addition she suffered my putting Sketches first so many times She loves to tell about the times that she was in the hospital with cancer and I would be sitting at her bedside writing Sketches She also tells about times I was in the hospital writing Sketches Sometimes I had to leave home very early to write Sketches Sometimes I had to come home very late after writing Sketches It was always difficult to write during the hectic day time A Time to Celebrate
When I retired from the Alabama State Senate in 2018, I decided to continue
writing Sketches However I decided not to keep calling it Senate Sketches; it became just Sketches The format was the same The Spirit was the same I was no longer in the Senate so it could not be called Senate Sketches A Time to Celebrate
I have met people in various parts of the world who felt they knew me because they read Sketches in The Greene County Democrat which goes to fellow strugglers in many countries around the world Of course other newspapers have published Sketches for limited periods of time but not every Sketches for nearly 2,000 weeks Only the Greene County Democrat holds that honor I used to read Sketches over Z105 3, a 50,000 Watt FM Radio Station I published Sketches on Facebook I also send Sketches by email to a long list of persons across the globe I have begun establishing a website that will have all 2,000 Sketches on it Sketches has a long reach A Time to Celebrate All kinds of People read Sketches faithfully They often tell me about how important Sketches is to them However, other than me only two persons have read every single Sketches That’s Dr Carol Prejean Zippert and John Zippert Co-Publishers of The Greene County Democrat A Time to Celebrate

EarthTalk® From the Editors of EThe Environmental Magazine
Dear EarthTalk: How do 3D-printed houses stack up against conventional ones with regard to sustainability both during construction and then in use?
-- J Homes, via email
3Dprinted homes are fast gaining traction as a sustainable alternative to traditional building Proponents say they use less material, create less waste and hold promise for efficient longterm performance The question is whether all this adds up in real life when compared to conventionally built houses
3D printing offers several clear advantages The additive process builds walls layer-by- layer using only what s needed drastically reducing waste According to Bay Management Group, 3D methods can cut process waste and overengineering significantly, creating a shorter supply chain and a more ecofriendly outcome Unlike conventional framing which discards offcuts and excess materials,
Canada’s Africville
printed homes use nearly all the feedstock Realistically that can reduce overall material consumption by up to 90 percent
And there’s speed A community of 100 3Dprinted homes built in Wolf Ranch, Texas was completed in just four to six weeks per home: a fraction of the six to eight months typical for woodframe builds That means fewer
The Africville Museum now serves to commemorate the community's legacy and educate future generations about its history and the ongoing struggle for racial equality in Canada Africville remains a powerful symbol of resilience and the figh t against racism representing the broader narrative of Black history in Canada
The community has become an important symbol of Black Canadian identity as an example of the "urban renewal" trend of the 1960s that razed similarly racialized neighborhoods across Canada, and the struggle against racism
Africville was founded in 1848 in Halifax, Nova Scotia, by Black refugees who arrived during and after the War of 1812 They were formerly enslaved African Americans who escaped from the United States and were resettled in Nova Scotia by the British The town was founded along the southern shore of Bedford Basin
But they were not welcome During the 20th century, Halifax neglected the community, failing to provide basic infrastructure and services such as roads water and sewerage Africaville residents however paid taxes
At the same time, Halifax continued to use the area as a prison, mental health facility, and an industrial waste site

The final vote tells part of the story All Republicans who voted 215 voted in favor of the Kirk Resolution (with four missing the vote) along with 95 Democrats Fifty-eight Democrats voted against the Kirk Resolution and 38 members all Democrats voted “present ”The most interesting tally of the vote one the Kirk Resolution was the number of members of the U S House who “missed” the vote: 26 Members of the Congressional Black Caucus who voted in favor of honoring Charlie Kirk were Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-BY), Reps Don Davis (D-NC), Greg Meeks (D-NY) and David Scott (D-NY) Two members of the CBC didn t vote: Reps Marc Veasey (D-TX) and Joe Neguse (D-CO) All other Black Caucus members voted NO on the Kirk resolution or present Members of the Congressional Black Caucus were split on the question of whether Charlie Kirk a rightwing commentator with controversial views on race should be honored by a lengthy Republican-penned resolution in his honor Leadership pressured several members of Congress to “take a walk” rather than vote NO to honoring Kirk All three members of the Democratic leadership, Leader Jeffries, Democratic Whip Rep Katherine Clark, and Democratic Caucus Chairman Rep Pete Aguilar, voted YES on the Kirk Resolution
Despite Kirk s murder at 31, which was captured on a shocking video widely shared on social media, many elected officials and political observers have noted Kirk s many controversial statements over the years Kirk was shot as he spoke on the first stop of a college tour at Orem Utah Valley University Kirk’s violent public murder has prompted Republicans to leverage his death into a way to punish anyone critical of Kirk or who spoke out about the irony of his death given his pro-second amendment public statements A website has been set up by his supporters listing anyone who has made any statement of controversy that Kirk supporters deem problematic
The Republican-written Kirk Resolution included statements against political violence
How you die does not redeem how you lived I do not celebrate anyone s murder Charlie Kirk did not deserve to be murdered But I m overwhelmed to see the nation s flag fly and half-staff for a man who was a proud racist who spent his entire life sowing seeds of division and hatred into this land ” said Pastor Dr Howard-John Wesley during his Sunday

Democrats have planted themselves firmly in the path of what they call a reckless assault on Medicaid and the Affordable Care Act They are not speaking in the language of compromise this time They are speaking in the cadence of survival for the poor, the sick, the disabled and the working families who stand to see their coverage ripped away Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer warned of what was at stake “Senators will have to choose: to stand with Donald Trump and keep the same lousy status quo and cause the Trump healthcare shutdown or stand with the American people protect their healthcare, and keep the government functioning,” he said House Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries framed the fight with defiance “We don’t work for Donald Trump, we don’t work for JD Vance, we don t work for Elon Musk, we work for the American people And that is why we are a hard no on the partisan Republican spending bill because it continues to gut the healthcare of everyday Americans, he stated In their joint letter to President Trump Schumer and Jeffries accused him of deliberately courting a shutdown to “gut the healthcare of the American people ” They wrote “We do not understand why you prefer to shut down the government rather than protect the healthcare and quality of life of the American people ” they stated Journalist Karen Tumulty analyzed the Democrats’ approach, noting that the minority party, though constrained in power, is wielding rare leverage in this moment
They have tied their stand to demands that strike at the heart of Trump’s agenda: restoring Medicaid funds slashed earlier this year, extending Affordable Care Act subsidies that are set to expire, and halting the administration s freeze on appropriated dollars Sen Chris Van Hollen of Maryland cut to the essence of Democratic resistance I m not going to write a blank check for a lawless president That is my starting point here he said
The stakes Democrats argue are not abstract They warn that millions could see premiums soar hospitals and clinics could close and the poorest communities urban and rural alike could be left without care In Delaware Sen Chris Coons described how both the most urban and most rural hospitals in his state depend heavily on Medicaid “Part of our challenge is lots of people haven’t felt that yet, but they will next month,” he said
The president has brushed aside these warnings, saying there may be a closed country for a period of time, even as he pledged to shield the military and Social Security checks, he stated Illinois Gov JB Pritzker made clear where he stands I m on Team Fight You don t think Republicans would use every ounce of leverage they would have in this circumstance?” he said For Democrats the fight is not just about numbers on a spreadsheet but about what kind of nation America chooses to be They are wagering that voters when confronted with rising costs and shuttered care will see the struggle not as political theater but as a line drawn in defense of their health and their dignity
machine hours fewer diesel trucks hauling materials and less energy burned on site In Melbourne, Australia, company Luyten recently built a 3Dprinted house in just three weeks total
Sustainability claims also hinge on materials used Some 3D homes use advanced concrete mixes like Lavacrete, which provide strength and reduce carbon emissions Others experiment with biobased feeds like wood waste with corn resin Habib Dagher of the Advanced Structures and Composites Center described one model called BioHome3D as “100 percent renewable because it is really bio based The pellets used in printing can be recycled and reused multiple times while retaining material properties Also many 3Dprinted homes deliver superior thermal mass thanks to concrete walls, which improve insulation and reduce heating and cooling needs Companies like Mighty Buildings now
integrate ultralow GWP (global warming potential) insulation to further reduce carbon footprint during operation
There are challenges Printing still relies heavily on concrete, which has high embodied carbon unless offset or replaced with greener materials Many finished homes still need traditional tradespeople to install plumbing wiring windows and interior finishes Zoning codes and building rules also limit adoption in many markets But once integrated with renewable energy and better materials, these homes could match or exceed conventional sustainability standards in both construction and ongoing use
CONTACTS: What are the Differences Between 3D Printed Houses and Traditional Houses? HYPER-
The residents of Africville struggled with poverty and poor health conditions as a result, and the community's buildings deteriorated
During the late 1960s the City of Halifax condemned the area relocating its residents to newer housing to facilitate the development of the nearby A Murray MacKay Bridge related highway construction, and the Port of Halifax facilities at Fairview Cove to the west The residents' belongings were loaded into garbage trucks and hauled to their destination
Soon after this former residents and activists began a long protest on the site against their treatment and the destruction
In 1996, the site was designated a National Historic Site of Canada, representative of Black Canadian settlements in the province, and an enduring symbol of the need for vigilance in defense of their communities and institutions
After decades of protests the government agreed to compensate descendants and their families who had been evicted from the area In addition, an Africville Heritage Trust was established to design a museum and build a replica of the community church
sermon at Alfred Street Baptist Church on Sept 14
Wesley’s sermon has gone viral on social media with millions of views “We must condemn violence without abandoning our right to speak out against ideas that are inconsistent with our values as Americans We strongly disagree with many of the beliefs Charlie Kirk promoted: including his belief that the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which ended racial segregation, was a mistake; his denial that systemic racism exists; his promotion of the Great Replacement theory; and his offensive claims about Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson, Michelle Obama, and Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee lacking adequate cognitive ability, wrote the Congressional Black Caucus in their official statement released after the vote on Sept 19
Kirk made negative statements about Ivy League graduates U S Supreme Court Associate Justice Jackson journalist Joy Reid the late Congressman Sheila Jackson Lee and former First Lady Michelle Obama implying that all of the Harvard Law Harvard College and Princeton graduates were successful because of affirmative action In relation to the criticism of the accomplished Black women, Kirk said on his show in July 2023 that, “Black women do not have brain processing power to be taken seriously You have to go steal a white person s slot
The resolution introduced in the House to honor Charlie Kirk s legacy is not about healing, lowering the temperature of our political discourse, or even ensuring the safety of members of Congress staff and Capitol personnel It is unfortunately an attempt to legitimize Kirk’s worldview a worldview that includes ideas many Americans find racist harmful and fundamentally un-American ”
The Congressional Black Caucus statement further stated In a moment when Republicans remain against any prohibitions on assault weapons or any other firearms One of Kirk’s most notable phrases has been posted by many on social media “Having an armed citizenry comes with a price, and that is part of liberty We need to be very clear that you re not going to get gun deaths to zero It will not happen But I think it s worth it I think it s worth it to have a cost of, unfortunately, some gun deaths every single year, so that we can have the Second Amendment Kirk once said
Tr ey Reed
Delta State’s initial contact with the family about Reed’s death was that he was found dead in his dorm room Reed’s grandfather contradicts the information saying the family found the truth from social media that he was dead, hanging from a tree Crump is on the ground in Mississippi, working in collaboration with civil rights groups, including the Equal Justice Initiative, NAACP, and Southern Poverty Law Center, “trying to get to the truth, as he confirms, the rumors are rampant
Compounding the issue, another man, 36-year-old Corey Zukatis, was found hanging from a tree in a wooded area in Vicksburg Mississippi near a casino The family of Zukatis confirms he was homeless at the time of his hanging death Both cases are under investigation
Democratic Mississippi Congressman Bennie Thompson a member of the House Homeland Security Committee, is calling for a full federal investigation following the hanging deaths of two black men in Mississippi, long considered the most racist state in the nation Brian Fair, Interim President and CEO of the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC), is also calling for a thorough investigation into the circumstances that led to the deaths, saying, the tremendous outcry from the local community over concerns surrounding the loss of these two should not go unaddressed
Fair also says the optics of these two deaths immediately evokes the collective consciousness of those who are deeply aware of Mississippi’s troubled past These events remind us how inequity continues to endanger lives ” According to the Equal Justice Initiative Lynching in America documents more than 4400 racial terror lynchings in the United States during the period between Reconstruction and World War II
Also, according to their website, EJI researchers documented 4075 racial terror lynchings of African Americans in Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, and Virginia between 1877 and 1950
On March 29 2022 President Joe Biden signed the Emmett Till Anti-Lynching Act into law The federal law says any act where someone conspires to commit a hate crime that results in death serious bodily injury or significant harm can be prosecuted as a federal crime The law carries up to 30 years in prison plus fines
