Living In The Familiar
Considering leaving the familiar can be traumatic
The familiar grounds us and enlightens us
The familiar arms and sometimes disarms us
The familiar is our comfort zone and also calls us
To step out that comfort zone
The familiar is our strength in struggle
And our hope and trust in loss
We are never alone in the familiar
For we can share love even as enmity lurks there
The familiar is based in our spirituality
Which guides us to live and give Toward a greater good
Leaving the familiar may only be traumatic
When we assign and limit place to the familiar
And lock ourselves in or out

The Political Violence of Trump-Vance policies
By John Zippert, Co-Publisher and Editor
Since the unfortunate assassination in Utah of Charlie Kirk, leader of Turning Point USA, a rightwing youth organization, there has been a great deal of attention focused on the detriment of political violence in our nation
We agree with the many political leaders who have condemned the direct political violence of shooting a youth leader, who was using his free speech rights on a college campus to express rightwing nationalistic and sometimes racist points of view No one in America should condone this type of direct political violence from anyone across the political spectrum, from the extreme right to the extreme left
President Trump has attempted to blame the problem of political violence in America on left wing radical lunatics”, without evidence and without reference to the political right in this country, which has a much clearer record of political violence with guns – study January 6, the Buffalo supermarket shooting, many attacks on schools, synagogues and other houses of worship
Upon reflection on the killing of Charlie Kirk, I came to the revelation of the political violence of Trump-Vance’s policy choices, this is a factor in the continuing violence against vulnerable people in our society And a continuing factor in how we stop and deescalate political violence going forward
Is there not a degree of political violence, when you cut off a family’s food stamps and leave them hungry; or cut off people’s health care when they are sick and may die; or end the LIHEAP program which provides heating assistance in the cold of winter to pay utility bills; or cutting Title I educational programs and school lunches to help our children learn more and better; or cutting off USAID assistance to hungry and diseased people around the world All of these are actions that the TrumpVance Administration celebrates There is evidence that people will die – political violence – based on the policies of the President, Vice-President and their enablers and supporters Will those political assassinations of poor families, homeless people, hungry people, sick people, get as much attention and condemnation as the killing of Charlie Kirk
As one who has called for the citizens arrest of Alabama Governor Kay Ivey for mass murder because she refused to extend Medicaid services to 250,000 working people in our state, I am using my free speech rights to call attention to her failings These families are in a coverage gap, because they do not make enough money to pay for their health insurance premiums on the Affordable Care Act (ACA) Marketplace and are going without needed and critical health care services
National studies by health care experts have calculated that 300 to 500 hundred people each year have died in the decade from 2014 until today because the state government of Alabama has not expanded Medicaid In the decade since these funds have been available – 3,000 to 5,000 in our state have died; that is mass murder to me!
The Trump-Vance Budget Reconciliation bill will reduce Medicare/Medicaid spending by 20% and deprive millions of their healthcare This is not justice This is political violence by policies!
We must resist this and fight these dangerous, anti-humane, violent policies, non-violently, but with determined social action and mobilization in the streets civil disobedience voting and every other peaceable, proactive, productive and creative means we have available to us

At least 2 2 million delinquent student loan borrowers have seen their credit scores drop by 100 points or more since loan servicers resumed reporting to credit bureaus in the first quarter of this year
The end of pandemic relief measures will further reduce affordable credit options for federal student loan borrowers already struggling with rising prices and stagnant wages, making new credit more expensive, if attainable at all Affected borrowers also will become more susceptible to predatory lenders who exploit their financial difficulties with debt trap business models that worsen – not improve – their financial lives
According to the New York Federal Reserve s student loan update, delinquency rates surged to a five-year high in early 2025 Further, during the second quarter of this year one in 10 borrowers were 90 days or more delinquent on their loans
These numbers are likely to rise as more delinquencies are recorded on a rolling basis
Among newly delinquent borrowers 2 4 million previously had scores above 620, strong enough for many to qualify for new autos mortgages and credit cards But now, missed federal student loan payments between 2020Q2 and 2024Q4 are now appearing in credit reports
Of the estimated 2 2 million borrowers who experienced credit score drops of at least 100 points
1 million saw their credit score drop by 150 points or more More interestingthe highest percentages of delinquency by age was among older borrowers: 18 percent by borrowers aged 50 and over and 14 percent by borrowers between 4049
Consumer advocates and economists warned of the negative impact of rising delinquencies on consumer finances and national economic activity
Being delinquent on student loan debt is difficult for people who are approaching their retirement years, said Lori Trawinski, director of finance and employment at AARP “People end up having to make extremely difficult choices, Trawinski said The Treasury Department recently restarted collection efforts for defaulted loans including garnishment of wages and tax returns Legally, officials can garner up to 15 percent of the Socials Security benefits of older and defaulted student loan borrowers A recent CNBC news article reported the Department of Education said it has paused that option for now
“Discussions around wage garnishment could further reduce disposable income, creating additional headwinds for consumer spending ” noted Eugenio J Alemán chief economist for Raymond James Financial, a leading investment firm “Although the direct economic impact of student loan defaults may be limited in the short term, the long-term effects, such as weakened credit profiles and reduced consumer ac-
tivity, could modestly slow overall economic growth
These efforts likely will have a disproportionate impact on Black and Latino borrowers who already suffer from racial disparities in wealth and income
Fewer family financial resources lead to a need for more student loans to finance their education, and then decades of repayment and financial stress
According to updated data from the Education Data Initiative report, Student Loan Debt by Race:
•Among bachelor ’s degree holders, 82 9 percent of Black students are the most likely to borrow federal loans
•Four years after graduation with a bachelor s degree, Black student borrowers owe $25 000 more than white borrowers
•Four years after graduation, Black borrowers owe an average of 188% more than whites
•Black borrowers are most likely to struggle financially due to student loan debt with average monthly payments of $258 for undergraduate studies
The August 1 resumption of interest accrual for the 7 9 million borrowers enrolled in the SAVE repayment program begun under President Joe Biden added to financial stress
This program proposed to shorten the number of years borrower repayments to only 10 years instead of the 20 or 25 years required under other and earlier plans
Despite SAVE’s borrower benefits it was challenged in two lawsuits still
pending that together opposed its implementation
These lawsuits were led by Missouri and Kansas officials; and 18 other states joined the legal challenges – many of which have significant Black populations including: Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia Louisiana Ohio South Carolina and Texas
According to the Department of Education, when forbearance ends and monthly payments resume the additional interest from August 1 forward will be added to the resumed payments
Jennifer Zhang a Research Associate at the Student Borrower Protection Center, aptly summarized the growing dilemma: Borrowers are in a uniquely impossible situation they must repay their loans with money they do not have but because of actions by this Administration, they are unable to switch to a more affordable repayment plan Meanwhile borrowers access to credit, rental housing, and key necessities of life will become increasingly expensive to nonexistent the further they fall behind leaving them more desperate and vulnerable to predatory lenders and ultimately creating ripple effects across the economy Charlene Crowell is a senior fellow with the Center for Responsible Lending She can be reached at Charlene crowell@res p o n s i b l e l e n d i n g o r g " data-linkindex="7">Charlene crowell@responsiblelending org
V iolence is er oding public safety, spiking our collective
By Marc Morial, President and CEO, National Urban League
(TriceEdneyWire com)I want to start this week’s column by validating your anxiety about the state of our country The violence we see in the morning noon and night is not normal To date, America has seen 357 mass shootings in 2025 alone; a rate that exceeds one per day In the last two weeks alone, we witnessed a mass shooting at a Catholic school in Minneapolis that claimed the lives of two children and injured 21 others, and the violent murder of an influencer
Both incidents have spread like wildfire on social media platforms that have repeatedly failed to curb hate speech and violent rhetoric
Some users have called for organizing and bringing retribution to their perceived enemies This content has generated millions of views and likes within days And rather than quelling anger and anxiety and uniting our nation political leaders have taken misinformation and divisive ideals, at times racist, xenophobic misogynistic and homophobic mainstream
These have resulted in threats of gun violence, bombings and hate speech that forced historically Black colleges across the country to close their doors for the safety of their students and staff
One of the most significant risks of allowing this targeted hatred is the dismantling of our Constitution and Democracy In the wake of the mass shooting in Minneapolis, outrage quickly shifted from the act of violence it-
self to the identity of the shooter This has led to dangerous recommendations to limit Second Amendment rights to one group of Americans opening the door to legalized discrimination at the federal level
That combined with the defunding of gun safety programs, background checks, and federal mental health programs, including shuddering of national suicide hotlines will not doubt lead to more gun violence and public fears
Let’s call these attacks what they are: domestic terrorism
Students should be able to walk their hallways without being gunned down at any moment Parents should be able to drop off their children at school, malls, and movie theaters without wondering if it is the last time that they ll see them Church parishioners should be able to attend houses of worship without the threat of a mass shooter bursting through the doors and taking their lives People should be able to shop for groceries and leave
with food for their dinner table and for their lives Gun violence and terror are ripping our communities apart It’s tearing families apart separating parents from their children And without the proper leadership and legal measures in place to ensure that these crimes never happen again, our country is being torn apart by misplaced anger, unjustified blame, and extremist rhetoric
No one should lose their life in a senseless act of violence, and our country should not lose its soul to the damage done in their wake
Solving this issue is not a game of football where one side wins and the other looses If we don t get this right, if we don t invest the tools to get to the root of the mentality that causes this violence and put in the safeguards to ensure this never happens again, we all lose Now is the time to demand that our leaders replace platitudes with policy and sow unity, not division

Char
lie Kir k’s Racist/ Xenophobic Rants ar e not pr otected speech
By Dr Wilmer J Leon, III (TriceEdneyWire com) -
“I think it’s worth it to have a cost of unfortunately some gun deaths every single year so that we can have the second amendment to protect our other God-given rights That is a prudent deal It is rational - Charlie Kirk April 5, 2023
Political flamethrower
Charlie Kirk was shot dead September 10, 2025, while speaking at a political event at Utah Valley University in Orem, Utah Authorities have arrested Utah resident Tyler James Robinson 22 He allegedly confessed to the shooting to a family member
Kirk’s shooting has triggered a national discussion about the political significance and/or impact that it will have moving forward
There are two basic elements of analysis of this event for me the human element and the political
From the human perspective very simply put, this was first degree murder It was the unlawful and intentional killing of a human being by another human being with malice and aforethought Murder is wrong I cannot condone it nor advocate for it in any circumstance I believe even though it is not always apparent to us the Creator will set things right The scales will be balanced but we must always work diligently and do everything in our power to balance them as well
From the political perspective we must be very clear Charlie Kirk was no martyr He was an angry, ignorant, intolerant, xenophobic, racist, hate spewing white supremacist There are far too many in mainstream media and politics who are doing everything in their power to turn Tyler James Robinson s horrific act into a referendum or validation of whatever agenda they are trying to promote Trump has ramped up his attacks on “the radical left” According to him, “We’re dealing with a radical left group of lunatics and they don t play fair, and they never did ” Kirk’s widow Erika has said “Those evil doers responsible for my husband s assassination have no idea what they have done They should all know this ” By all official accounts Robinson was a lone wolf with no known political affiliation How does he become part of “the radical left” or Erika Kirk s contrived group of evil doers?
Others like Utah Gov Spencer Cox are trying to turn this into a discussion about political speech without examining the content and nature of that speech and too many on the so-called Left are allowing them to do this Cox said, “ political violence is different than any other type of violence the very act that Charlie championed, of expression that is enshrined in our founding documents having his life taken in that way makes it more difficult for people to believe they can share their ideas ” In theory Cox is correct but political speech is not what this should be about As citizens we cannot afford to be lulled into
this trap equating racist rhetoric and hate with protected political speech Yes, the First Amendment protects our right to free speech but not all speech is protected The phrase You can t falsely shout fire in a crowded theatre” comes from Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes's opinion in the 1919 Supreme Court case Schenck v United States That’s what Trump and Kirk and the others are doing within our crowded political theatre
Remember Trump’s comments about Mexican’s? He claimed that they are bringing their worst people to America, including criminals and rapists They’re sending people that have lots of problems and they re bringing their problems,” he said “They’re bringing drugs they’re bringing crime, they re rapists, and some I assume are good people, but I speak to border guards and they tell us what we are getting Following Trump s racist rants, Kirk said on May 19, 2023, “ it’s happening all the time in urban America prowling Blacks go around for fun to go target white people, that’s a fact It’s happening more often ” That’s not political speech; that s unprotected racist hate speech Isn t it ironic that Kirk’s assassin, Tyler James Robinson is not one of those prowling Blacks and is from Orem, Utah?
It is also important to remember that fighting words are not protected speech This concept was established in Chaplinsky v New Hampshire The legal concept of “fighting words refers to words that, "by their very utterance, inflict injury or tend to incite an immediate breach of the peace" prompting the listener to throw a punch They are considered to have very little social value and the government can prohibit them to prevent immediate violence and disorder Charlie Kirk said on May 19 2023 "MLK was awful He's not a good person " That s not political speech Those comments have no social value Those are fighting words Again, in theory, Utah Gov Spencer Cox is correct, but he fails to put any of Kirk’s “political speech” into any real context On January 23, 2024, Kirk said, “If I see a Black pilot, I’m going to be like, boy, I hope he’s qualified ” Does Cox agree with this? Does he support this? Will Cox defend this? He makes no mention of the hate filled racist nature of Kirk’s diatribes Dr Ronald Walters wrote in White Nationalism Black Interests “ given a condition where one race is dominant in all political institutions, most policy actions appear to take on an objective quality where policy makers argue they are acting on the basis of “national interests” rather than racial ones ” There are way too many on both sides of the aisle who want to protect the right to speak in a political context while ignoring the fact that its racist nature serves no valuable democratic purpose Kirk’s widow said he was killed because he spoke for patriotism and faith Well, there could be some truth relative to the patriotism part if you understand American history white nationalism, and the racist and xenophobic realities of American history But the faith part? Not at all

Purpose is powerful Purpose empowers so many aspects of our lives We generally view purpose as a good thing However we rarely delve into the many things it impacts positively Purpose is Powerful I returned to Harvard Law School for what I believe is the first time in 55 years It reminded me of the power of purpose in so many ways Few of us African Americans graduating 55 years ago returned My dear wife was present; she graduated from Harvard 56 years ago! I think she was the only one from her class of 1969 I think one other person graduating in my class was in attendance Purpose is Powerful
I was reminded that I often stated emphatically that I was going to return to Alabama to help “make things better Nearly all the African American graduates of Harvard Law School went to six big American cities: Boston; Washington, D C ; New York City; Atlanta; Los Angeles; and San Francisco My purpose landed me in Selma Alabama Purpose is Powerful
My purpose in life was directing me well before I went to Harvard Law School My purpose led me to attend Talladega College I went because I was told that it was hard to get accepted and make it through Talladega I wanted the challenge At the time I was living in Queens New York City having migrated from Alabama several years earlier Purpose is Powerful While I was attending Talladega, I traveled to Montgomery in March of 1965 for the last leg of the Selma to Montgomery March in the fight for Voting Rights I then traveled to Lowndes County in 1966 to Help the Lowndes County Freedom Organization, commonly referred to as the Black Panther Party, for the first election after passage of the 1965 Voting Rights Act My efforts and the efforts of others were in vain Purpose is Powerful There is nothing big about Selma Alabama except it symbolizes the right to vote deriving from its critical role in the Voting Rights Movement That Movement was throughout the South, but it came to a head in Selma and surrounding areas One factor was the shooting of Jimmie Lee Jackson by an Alabama State Trooper in Marion Alabama just 25 miles from Selma Jimmie Lee died in a Selma hospital one week later Jackson s death and the fight for voting rights resulted in the famous Bloody Sunday March on March 7, 1965, the Turn Around Tuesday March on March 9 1965 and the 50-mile five-day Selma to Montgomery March from March 21 1965 to March 25, 1965 The 1965 Voting Rights Act is very much identified with Selma even though the Voting Rights Struggle was all over the South and indeed the nation So many people brought powerful purpose to bear in this struggle Purpose is Powerful
While Faya and I were at Harvard Law School, we helped found the Harvard Black Law Students Association (HLSA) I was either the second or third President of the organization We fought to get Black professors and administrators at Harvard the School We fought to get more Black law students in the Harvard Law School
We connected with the Boston Community We wanted to make Harvard Law School and the whole community better Purpose is Powerful Purpose is not just increased but multiplied when two persons with the same or similar purpose are joined together Faya and I had similar purposes That purpose compelled us to work together at Harvard Law School We were arrested together We joined others in protest in taking over a building at Harvard College We worked together to increase Black participation in the Reginald Heber Smith Program We married on January 23, 1970 Faya was assigned to Columbia University to work with the National Welfare Rights Organization in New York City I traveled from Cambridge to New York City to participate in protests for welfare rights We spent nearly a year in Africa on a Joint Ford Foundation Fellowship doing a project entitled, “The Africanization of Universities in Nigeria ” Purpose is Powerful When Faya and I returned from West Africa we spent the summer helping organize the United Black Leadership Council in Baldwin County where I grew up We also helped organize and operate a daycare center My Mother, Ola Mae Sanders, was central to each of these initiatives She was filled with purpose Three of us were joined together in one purpose Purpose is Powerful We utilized our Reginald Heber Smith Fellowships to go to Huntsville, Alabama to provide legal services to the poor While we were there, we provided leadership in founding the Alabama Black Lawyers Association now the Alabama Lawyers Association However when the Madison County Legal Aid Society tried to limit our law practice to eviction cases, our purpose impelled us to leave the organization, to give up our Fellowships, to strike out on our own and move to Selma Purpose is Powerful Our intention was to work in Selma for 5 years helping to make the Alabama Black Belt a better place We did not leave after 5 years because we had a law practice, a home and had founded several organizations including the Black Belt Arts and Cultural Center (B-BACC) the Dallas County Black United Leadership Council McRae Learning Center (now McRae Gaines School) and the Dallas County Welfare Rights Organization Our purpose rooted us in Selma and the Alabama Black Belt Purpose is Powerful Our purpose caused us to be deeply involved in elections across the Alabama Black Belt to litigate all kinds of civil rights and other issues including Black land loss In addition, helped us to build many other organizations including the following Twenty First Century Youth Leadership movement which spread across the country; Alabama New South Coalition; Campaign for a New South; BEST (Best Education Support Team); MOMS (Mothers of Many); CARE (Coalition of Alabama Reforming Education); National Voting Rights Museum and Institute; Bridge Crossing Jubilee the largest annual gathering of Voting and Civil and Human Rights in the Country; Ancient Africa, Enslavement and
Civil War Museum; Black Belt Community Foundation; Black Belt Journal Newspaper; Z105 3 FM Radio Station; the Selma Center for Nonviolence; SOS (Saving Our Selves Movement for Justice and Democracy); and more Purpose is Powerful While we were in Cambridge for our Harvard reunion, Faya and I discussed purpose as it relates to our lives In addition to what I have already written purpose helped strengthen and sustain our marriage for 55 years and continuing; to raise a family; to serve in the Alabama State Senate for 35 years; and to write a weekly Senate Sketches for nearly 2,000 weeks (38 years and 4 months) without missing a single week Faya has also written many songs poems plays and articles We each have had multiple radio and Facebook programs Purpose is Powerful Faya and I are both in our eighties We believe that purpose has helped us to live well beyond the biblically allotted three score and ten year We believe that purpose has infused and strengthened every element of our lives Purpose even sustained us when we built our firm into the biggest Black law firm (39 persons) in Alabama and then saw it go down to three persons The first Black Farmers’ case, which provided more than $1 billion to Black farmers across the country caused our law firm to crash It crashed due to our agreeing not to take any money from Black farmers because the government was supposed to pay for all of our work That did not happen as it was supposed to But we were not bitter We just started all over again Purpose helped us to be resilient and motivated and remain undaunted Purpose is Powerful Now on to the Daily Diary

Dear EarthTalk: Is it really possible from a legal/constitutional perspective for the Trump administration to sell off public lands across the American West to the highest bidding developers and resource extractors as threatened? M G Daly, Burlingame, CA
National parks, wildlife refuges, forests, and other public land is at risk of being sold and exploited by the Trump administration This land is owned by the American people, yet the administration hopes to pass legislation to increase development, logging, mining, and sell our lands to
wildlife refuges, forests & other public lands?
private owners President Trump’s secretary of the interior Doug Burgum stated that these resources are national assets and could be used to reduce national debt And these projects aren’t new When Trump was in office in 2017, he set into motion an executive order that aimed to reduce the size of monuments greater than 100 000 acres in size, claiming that it was “another egregious use of
These threats came a day after the deadly shooting of Charlie Kirk at Utah Valley University
Reverand William Barber of Repairer of the Breach, in a written statement says “We are facing a dangerous moment in our nation violence should not be justified when we disagree with someone s politics, nor should it be justified to use lethal force and military power to repress vulnerable communities ” Regarding the threat against the HBCU campuses the schools listed in this article decided to lock down and cancel classes after receiving threats
North Carolina Congresswoman Alma Adams Founder and Co-Chair of the Bipartisan Bicameral HBCU Caucus, expressed, “I am distressed to learn that colleges and universities across the country are being forced into lockdown due to credible threats of violence against their campuses I am actively monitoring these situations and am praying for the safety of everyone ”
Reverend Al Sharpton of the National Action Network says his organization is also monitoring the recent threats against these HBCUs, emphasizing, “We have seen too much violence on our campuses whether it was the brazen murder of Charlie Kirk yesterday or the threats against these HBCUs today ” The civil rights leader stressed, “Colleges and Universities should be a place of free expression and debate in a way that’s respectful engaging and productive He emphasized that “what we have seen in the last two days is anything but that
In 2022 the FBI offered HBCU s security training after a series of large-scale bomb threats against HBCUs during Black History Month that year
Feder al Cuts
Education Secretary Linda McMahon stated that the department will “no longer award Minority-Serving Institution grants that discriminate by restricting eligibility to institutions that meet government-mandated racial quotas She added that the administration intends to redirect the money toward programs “that advance Administration priorities ” The funding has supported initiatives including laboratory equipment purchases classroom improvements student tutoring services, and endowment growth The cuts immediately drew criticism from leaders of colleges and universities who said the loss would harm students and damage institutions that depend on the resources Without this funding students will lose the critical support they need to succeed in the classroom, complete their degrees on time, and achieve social mobility for themselves and their families ” said Mildred García chancellor of the California State University system “These funds strengthen entire campuses, creating opportunities and resources that benefit all students, especially those pursuing STEM fields, as well as enhancing the communities where these colleges and universities are located ” said David Mendez interim CEO of the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities University of Hawaiʻi president Wendy Hensel added that the cuts will affect “all of our students, the programs that support them and the dedicated staff who carry out this work The department s announcement follows a lawsuit filed in June by the state of Tennessee and Students for Fair Admissions, which argued the programs were discriminatory because of enrollment eligibility requirements In July the Department of Justice said it would not defend the grants, with Solicitor General D John Sauer writing that they violated the constitutional right to equal protection According to HBCU Buzz, the decision has sent shockwaves across campuses with advocates warning that programs supporting mentorship STEM pipelines and scholarships are at risk Lawmakers, including Senator Patty Murray, have said the Education Department acted unilaterally without consulting Congress
The debate over funding arrives as HBCUs continue to face historic underfunding CNN fact-checkers reported that while the Biden-Harris administration had directed $16 billion to HBCUs from 2021 to 2024, Trump previously proposed more than $100 million in cuts to HBCU programs during his first term despite later claiming he had been uniquely responsible for funding the schools The Education Department confirmed that roughly $132 million in mandatory congressional allocations for fiscal 2025 will still be distributed though officials said they are continuing to review the legal questions surrounding those funds
deposits to increase mining there no matter whether the land is protected or a national monument
But is this legally possible? The Federal Land Policy and Management Act (FLPMA) of 1976 outlines management and protection guidelines for the federal government for the purpose of enhancing public lands in federal ownership It does permit the sale of land, but only under certain criteria such as public interest
government power ” This was abolished in Biden's presidency and many people challenged Trump s reduction
Recent news has reported that the Trump administration has already removed vital protection for two lands in order to increase mining for mineral production Trump has also issued an executive order that plans to identify public lands that may have mineral
en Attiah
Many Native American tribes and environmental activists argue that Trump’s actions go beyond the President's power and require congressional approval If we take a look at the Constitution this rings true In Article 4 it is stated that Congress, not the President “shall have Power to dispose of and make all needful Rules and Regulations respecting the Territory or other Property belonging to the United States ” This essentially means that land sales largely require Congress to be involved Additionally, the Na-
Other Black Washington Post staffers in senior positions who have recently departed, via the recent buyout round, include Monica Norton and Krissah Thompson “Once many Black reporters editors and columnists at the upper ranks of Washington Post, but now: Courtland Milloy, Krissah Thompson, Eugene Robinson, Joe Davidson, Vanessa Williams, Ovetta Wiggins, Darryl Fears, Monica Norton, Perry Bacon Jonathan Capehart gone soon Colby King ” wrote Vincent Morris on July 23 on social media Morris is a former spokesperson for Sen Bernie Sanders, who was also a media columnist
Though the Black population in Washington, DC, has decreased from 70 percent in 1980 to 40 percent in 2020 the District of Columbia has a substantial Black population at 40 percent as of 2020 The news regarding Attiah emerged on the morning of Sept 15 after Attiah wrote a lengthy description of her side of the events
They included the disclosure that she was fired because of a social media post related to controversial conservative activist Charlie Kirk, who was shot to death on Sept 10 in Orem, Utah, during an appearance at Utah Valley University “I was the last remaining Black full-time opinion columnist at the Post in one of the nation s most diverse regions, Attiah wrote Washington D C no longer has a paper that reflects the people it serves What happened to me is part of a broader purge of Black voices from academia business government and media a historical pattern as dangerous as it is shameful and tragic she added
Since the start of President Trump’s second term in January there has been a forced exodus of Black federal officials and a push by Trump’s Administration to end any policy related to diversity or inclusion Prominent Black officials have been pushed out, including the Librarian of Congress Carla Hayden, who was fired in May, and General Charles Q Brown Jr who was removed in February Republicans have also moved to defund the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB) and the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) moving to less regulation The departure of Attiah for The Post is yet another sign that a rightward shift is underway in legacy media
The Washington Post Guild condemns the unjust firing of columnist Karen Attiah The Washington Post wrongly fired Opinions columnist Karen Attiah over her social media posts The Post not only flagrantly disregarded standard disciplinary processes, it also undermined its own mandate to be a champion of free speech The right to speak freely is the ultimate personal liberty and the foundation of Karen’s 11-year career at The Post ” wrote The Washington Post Guild on social media
The Washington Post is owned by Jeff Bezos, the billionaire owner of Amazon, the retail on-line marketing giant Bezos and other billionaires appeared on the platform at President Donald Trump’s second inauguration and their influence has expanded as their politics turned rightward
Four Little Gir ls
Democratic Alabama Congresswoman Terri Sewell said this anniversary reminds us to reflect on issues our forefathers fought for during the most powerful movement in this nation: civil rights, voting rights, and civil liberties Twelve years ago, the four little girls received the Congressional Gold Medal posthumously: Addie Mae Collins Dennis McNair Cynthia Wesley and Carol Robertson
Shavon Arline-Bradley of the National Council of Negro Women says we are commemorating one of the most gruesome acts of violence in our country’s history where 4 Black Girls from Birmingham AL lost their lives at the hands of White Supremacists Dr Amos Brown, pastor of the Third Baptist Church of San Francisco, says of the heinous, deadly bombing that there was “no respect for our humanity ” feeling the crime emphasizes “they don’t see us as being human
Bradley also articulated, Their sacrifice sparked the nation to come to grips with the harsh realities of what it meant to be Black in America ” The children were in church during the Sunday School hour when “These innocent young girls sought to learn more about their faith and how to love thy neighbor as themselves, when the deadly explosion occurred, adds Arline Bradley
She also said “Today as we celebrate their contribution to the freedoms we enjoy today let us be reminded that we shall overcome and victory belongs to those of us that fight for liberty and justice for all Meanwhile, there is a fifth survivor, Sara Collins Rudolph, Addie Mae’s sister, who lost her eyes and carries scars from the bombing
Two young boys Virgil Ware and Johnny Robinson were also killed the same day in other parts of Birmingham and history has chosen to recognize them as part of the ‘hidden history’ of civil rights in the city
tional Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) requires federal agencies to make an assessment of environmental impact prior to legal action Despite these clear regulations being in place the Trump administration can find loopholes By reducing the power of conservation laws proposing land sales to FLMPA, and changing the classification of certain lands to allow for private leasing selling public land isn t impossible If President Trump succeeds in implementing these orders the damage would be massive Animals face habitat destruction and pollution This is also a bipartisan issue Most Americans are in opposition to the reduction of national parks and public land To take a stand against this issue, raise awareness by participating in protests against the Trump Administration For instance, just last week, there was a protest through Yosemite National Park In addition to engaging with local advocacy groups, sign petitions and email your

Seven African countries have experienced military-led coups since 2020 most recently Gabon and Niger raising questions about political stability the lack of which makes it harder to address pressing issues like terrorism and food shortages in many countries Permanent G20 membership signals the rise of a continent whose young population of 1 3 billion is set to double by 2050 and make up a quarter of the planet s people

What God does she pray to and follow? Not the one who told us to love our neighbor as ourselves, do unto others all are created in the image of God, and we must care for the least of us Those ideals were never championed by Charlie Kirk
Here are two other Kirk quotes regarding Islam: As Cox champions the right of free speech, where was he when Mahmoud Khalil the Algerian-Palestinian student who is known for his leading role in the 2024 Columbia University pro-Palestinian protests was arrested, sent to ICE detention and nearly deported? What about Turkish doctoral student Rumeysa Öztürk who was arrested by federal immigration agents and had her visa revoked in connection with her pro-Palestinian activism at Tufts University? Did he stand for their First Amendment rights?
We ve been warning about the rise of Islam on the show, to great amount of backlash We don t care that’s what we do here And we said that Islam is not compatible with western civilization – June 24 2025 Islam is the sword the left is using to slit the throat of America – September 8 2025
And he claimed to be Christian?
Again, isn’t it ironic that Kirk s assassin Tyler James Robinson is not one of those sword wielding Muslims and is from Orem, Utah? I guess God does have a sense of humor or at least a sense of irony
Where were all of the self-proclaimed protectors of political speech and tolerance and whose rights were they protecting when former Colorado Representative Tom Tancredo and the Tea Party were screaming “we want our country back ? Where were they when Tea Party sycophants were spitting at Congressmen Emanuel Cleaver, John Lewis and Barney Frank? Where were their voices when the Tea Party members were calling Cleaver and Lewis niggers and Frank a faggot? See, one of the major problems with these selfanointed defenders of po-

litical speech” is how selective they are in their indignation That’s called hypocrisy You re either all in or you are all wrong Where are these so-called “Christians” as Fox News host Brian Kilmeade called for executing homeless individuals with mental health issues during a September 10 episode of Fox & Friends suggesting "involuntary lethal injection" as a solution for those who refuse government assistance? Forget the fact that he “apologized” How can you walk that back ? All of this faux-martyrdom for Charlie Kirk reminds me of the scene from Godfather II, the character Hyram Roth was talking with the character Mike Corleone about the murder of Roth’s friend, Moe Greene Roth says, “When I heard it I didn’t get angry I knew Moe, he was talking loud saying stupid things, so when he turned up dead I let it go And I said to myself, this is the business we’ve chosen ” Kirk was talking loud saying racist things I close this as I opened it, quoting Charlie Kirk, “I think it s worth it to have a cost of unfortunately some gun deaths every single year so that we can have the second amendment to protect our other God-given rights That is a prudent deal It is rational ” Be careful what you wish for When you make your living like the Charlie Kirk’s of the world contributing to the ignorant, racist xenophobic intolerant white supremacist hate filled mélange that passes for political dialog in this country you run the risk of running up against someone who is just a little more intolerant that you; and bad things can happen One of the sayings I learned in law school was “res ipsa loquter” – that’s Latin for the thing speaks for itself Sorry Charlie

Pr ostate Cancer Awar eness Month celebr ated with educational session at Steel Cuttin’
Barber shop
On Monday afternoon, September 15, 2025, from 4:00 to 7:00 PM, a large group of men gathered at Marcus Steele’s Barbershop on Prairie Avenue to receive a briefing on prostate cancer
Marcus Steele, a five-year cancer survivor told his story of being successfully diagnosed and treated for prostate cancer
Lisa Means, Physician’s Assistant and Manager of the Maude Whatley Medical Clinic in Eutaw, also presented important information and answered questions on prostate and other cancers and diseases affecting people in Greene County
All men over the age of 45 were encouraged to get an annual PSA Test which shows specific marking in your blood for prostate cancer A PSA test score above 4 0 is indicative of prostate cancer that should be further checked by a urologist Rising PSA scores over several years may also be predictive of prostate cancer and helpful in making an early diagnosis. Saw Palmetto Extract is a natural herbal supplement which may curb or reduce the impact of prostate cancer
The people present, in the relaxed setting of the barbershop conversation, asked many more personal health questions than in a formal lecture presentation, which was welcomed by the participants, who are often reluctant to speak in more formal situations
The ‘Barbershop Conversation on Prostate Health’ was sponsored by United Purposes, Greene County Community CHA’s and Steele Cuttin’ to celebrate Prostate Cancer Awareness Month
