The pre-determined list of 103 graduate employers was pulled together by the Talent Solutions team based on comprehensive research into the New Zealand employment market determining which employers have graduate opportunities. For a company to make this list they had to either have a formal graduate programme, have structured graduate roles, or hire multiple graduates each year. Companies that had entry level roles or ad hoc graduate roles were excluded from this list.

Retail banks and insurance companies, at their core, offer financial products to meet the ever changing demand of consumers. These products are heavily effected by global markets which means the products are always evolving. Financial consultancies are forward thinking and help people overcome financial obstacles and meet goals. WHERE YOU CAN WORK The four major banks in New Zealand have formal programmes with many opportunities for young people across a range of sectors. They will hire people from a variety of study backgrounds including: agriculture, commerce/business, accounting, the arts, science, finance, economics, engineering, law, management, marketing and mathematics. Other banks including Heartland Bank, Cooperative Bank, Deutsche Bank, HSBC and Goldman Sachs often have structured roles for graduates as well.

Sectors include: • Agribusiness • Corporate & Commercial Business • Institutional Banking • Risk • Markets • Retail & Business Banking • Technology Note: Be aware that not all employers in this sector offer graduate roles with some only offering internships. These interns typically move into graduate positions, thus, there is no need to hire graduates. Don’t miss out! There are many finance and insurance companies that now have great opportunities for graduates but these programmes are comparatively smaller than those of the banks. They typically have roles in marketing, advice, customer service and experience and analyst roles. FINDING THE EMPLOYER FOR YOU When it comes to choosing which employers to apply for and start your career with, it is best to research employers company mission, values and company culture to choose the most appropriate employer for you. Employers in this sector are looking for students from all study backgrounds with a wide range of skills including strong numerical, communication and interpersonal skills. OVERVIEW For the purpose of this magazine we have grouped many companies that are across a number of industries under the “corporate” industry umbrella. Thus, there is a wide variety of sectors you can work in and companies you can work for, from primary industries to manufacturing and technology to advertising. Companies can be large publicly listed companies with millions in annual turnover or smaller privately owned companies with equally as exciting graduate opportunities. Career opportunities under the corporate sector vary greatly. Some examples of graduate roles include: Logistics, Operations, Sales, Marketing, Account Management and Consulting roles. Many corporate opportunities are generalist type roles and programmes are often rotational. These programmes offer the chance to experience a wide range of business functions before settling on one which you’d like to explore further. WHERE YOU CAN WORK Given that this industry is so broad, there are many sectors you can work in

and companies you can work for. Major New Zealand corporate companies include Fonterra, Mainfreight and Vodafone, all of which have great graduate programmes. Companies under the corporate sector will often take students from a wide range of degree backgrounds including, Arts, Business, Communications, Engineering, Information Technology, Law and Science. Many corporate opportunities are generalist type roles and programmes are often rotational through different business sectors. These companies and roles are very desirable for graduates, making it highly competitive to secure positions. Many of these companies also offer internships so it pays to do your research into these companies early in your studies. Advertising companies like Clemenger Group New Zealand, Saatchi & Saatchi & FCB are a little more selective with degree backgrounds and look to hire graduates each year that typically have Communications, Marketing and Design focused degrees. However, Account Management is equally as important to their business. FINDING THE EMPLOYER FOR YOU When it comes to choosing which employers to apply for and start your career with, it is best to research employers company mission, values and company culture to choose the most appropriate employer for you. Employers in this sector are looking for graduates with excellent numerical, analytical and project management skills. OVERVIEW The engineering industry is very broad with many disciplines, the most common being civil and structural engineering. There are a wide range of employers, not just engineering firms, that offer opportunities for students with specific degree backgrounds so it is important to find out which employers are recruiting from each discipline. Major disciplines include: • Civil/Structural • Chemical & Process • Electrical • Mechanical • Mechatronics • Software Engineering graduates can work in a broad range of industries based on study backgrounds including construction, design, environment, electrical, energy, water, manufacturing and information technology. Within engineering it is important to know the difference between consulting and contracting firms. It is important to know which will best suit you. Typically, work in consulting firms is office based, technical and design focused, and will involve more theory and analytics. Working in a consultancy firm can mean exposure to a wide range of projects and the

THE NEW ZEALAND TOP 50 GRADUATE EMPLOYERS

opportunity to work on multiple projects at once. On the other hand, a contracting firm is typically more implementation focused, hands on and practical. Work in construction firms involves a lot of problem solving, is largely project based and work is typically on the project site which can mean travel or relocation at times. WHERE YOU CAN WORK Students with engineering degrees are no longer limited to applying for consulting or contracting engineering firms. Many accounting and corporate consulting firms now hire students with engineering study backgrounds into consulting roles. Given the requirements of practical hours for an engineering degree, many firms will offer internship opportunities. The larger engineering firms are well known for their extensive training and development programmes, with both Beca and Downer winning awards in 2015 for their graduate programmes and training & development programmes. Given that training & development is held in such high regard by students when deciding where to work, it is great to see these employers placing equally as much emphasis on your development. AIRWAYS NEW ZEALAND Working at Airways, you are at the heart of aviation. First and foremost, we enable air traffic management – the processes that keep travellers safe in the skies. The smart technologies we employ bring a real difference to our airline and airport customers. Airways New Zealand provides air traffic control and air navigation services across New Zealand’s 30 million square kilometres of airspace, managing key aviation infrastructure and more than one million air traffic movements per year. Renowned globally for leading innovation and development in the aviation sector, Airways also delivers air navigation and air traffic management consultancy and training services in over 65 countries. Our organisation is at the forefront of developing procedures and technology to reduce aviation’s environmental footprint. Airways is a vibrant place for new graduates to work. We typically recruit graduates with experience or interest in air traffic control and technical engineering,

although we snap up the best new or recent grads across a wide range of professions. This includes entry-level roles for graduates with degrees in business, marketing, IT and finance. Specifically, our Technical Trainee programme offers full-time paid practical, theoretical and on-the-job training, interesting work, mentoring, and a long term career path. This opens doors to potential promotion and international travel with Airways. We recruit annually for our trainees. Our trainees go on to manage our safety critical systems, and represent Airways to our growing international customer base as Field Technicians and Technical Coordinators. We ideally look to engage those that already hold, or are in their final year of a Bachelor of Engineering specialising in electronics, ideally with strands in radio and data communications. We also have an annual intake for our Air Traffic Control training. The Airways training centre offers small classes in a supportive environment. Your first six months is intensive, using our state of the art simulators to apply the theory you’ll be learning. Then you’ll relocate for on-the-job training in one of our regional towers. Full training takes around 12 months, with the second six months of training supported by Airways. Upon successful completion, you are engaged as an Airways Air Traffic Controller with a commencing salary package of approximately $90,000 per annum (base plus benefits). We ideally look for students with aviation, technology, or general business degrees.

CLEMENGER GROUP NEW ZEALAND We are a group of 31 different advertising and marketing communications companies in Australia and New Zealand. Our success comes from creating compelling commercial content that helps our clients to build their brands and businesses. The Clemenger Group in New Zealand is the largest and most successful group of communications companies and is part of the global BBDO network. The Clemenger Group family includes Clemenger BBDO, Colenso BBDO, Proximity New Zealand, .99 Enterprises, justONE, Porter Novelli, Touchcast, BrandWorld, Raydar, Creative Activation and more. Our expertise spans brand advertising, CRM/direct, media, digital, public relations, experiential, shopper marketing, promotional marketing, brand consultancy, and retail advertising. Our people are our competitive difference and we are constantly on the lookout for smart, savvy and curious individuals. That’s why we launched the Clemenger Group

Graduate Programme back in 2010. This is a nine month programme which runs from January to October, each year. We take online applications via our website from 1 July - 31 August, 2016. The applications will be reviewed by a panel of agency executives who will choose a shortlist of 30 graduates. If shortlisted, you will be invited to attend an assessment centre in Auckland, in late September / early October latest. The assessment centre involves challenges and individual interviews. You are required to make your own way to Auckland and organise your own accommodation for the assessment centre. If you’re offered a place on the programme, you will spend the first 12 weeks rotating through different agencies and departments to gain an understanding of the different aspects of the advertising industry. This rotation period is a unique opportunity and sets our programme apart from others. At the end of these three months, you will be better able to assess if this is indeed the industry for you. If it is, you’ll get a six month placement with your employing agency in an area where you can excel. You’ll be on a fixed term employment agreement and paid an entry-level salary during the nine-months of the programme. There is no guarantee of a permanent job, but at the end of the programme we hope you are confirmed in your dream role!

INLAND REVENUE Inland Revenue plays a critical role in improving the economic and social wellbeing of New Zealanders. Our world will change a great deal over the next two years - around us and within Inland Revenue. How we work with our customers and across government … the tools we’ll have … the services we’ll offer and the way we use information … there are big changes ahead for all. We have a lot to look forward to. While change takes centre-stage, most of our people are still working on delivering services and support to customers. You are central to great performance as we maintain revenue, distribute payments, provide advice, and ensure digital access is easy and people are supported across Inland Revenue, every day.

COMPANY FACTS Our role is to contribute to the economic and social wellbeing of New Zealand by collecting and distributing money. You pay tax and you may get money from the Government. Inland Revenue is accountable to the taxpayers of New Zealand and we want people to have trust and confidence in us. We’re also accountable to the Minister of Revenue.

Industry:

The Minister and the Government rate our success in these two outcomes:

10-20

• Revenue is available to fund government programmes through people meeting payment obligations of their own accord • People receive payments they are entitled to, enabling them to participate in society. Our three main responsibilities are: • Collecting revenue • Administering social policy programmes

Over the next two years we’re putting major effort into clarity for customers, managing tax risks, Child Support reform, policy and international tax matters, cross-government support for customers and improving digital systems.

• Providing policy advice to the Government, together with the Treasury.

Why we’re here

You will also have an individual performance and development plan in place to measure your success at work. Your personal performance plan should reflect the part you have to play in delivering against your business unit or group plan, which delivers against our organisation objectives.

The first thing you may think is you’re at Inland Revenue because it’s our job to collect tax. Much more than that, you’re here to make a difference to the lives of New Zealanders. The rest of the answers will vary from person to person but, overall, you’re here to help us reach our objectives.

Each business area will have its own business plan, and maybe business unit plans, outlining how your work relates to Inland Revenue’s objectives.

SAATCHI & SAATCHI NEW ZEALAND We work with some of New Zealand’s most loved brands and create some of New Zealand’s most loved stories. Our five golden rules: • Never settle for second best. • Surround yourself with good people. • Work with clients who are equally passionate. • Show respect for the consumer by rewarding them with great work. • Believe nothing is impossible. Starting as a graduate at Saatchi & Saatchi takes your career to a whole new level of experience, responsibility and challenge. Saatchi & Saatchi offers one to two positions a year for a graduate to enter the agency through the CAANZ internship program. The program provides an entry point as an Account Executive to work on some of the most influential businesses in New Zealand such as Toyota, ASB and Heineken. As a Saatchi & Saatchi CAANZ graduate part of your nine month internship involves an academic placement in the CAANZ AUT Foundation Course. The CAANZ/AUT University Foundations of Advertising and Media Programme is a comprehensive course which covers the fundamentals of the advertising and media agency world.

The course is now regarded as one of the most valuable and effective courses for those with fewer than three years’ experience. The course will be underpinned academically by AUT University and is supported with presentations and case studies from industry experts and leaders. On a practical level, Saatchi & Saatchi graduates work within advertising or multi-service agencies, acting as a link between clients and the agency. One great aspect about being a graduate at Saatchi & Saatchi is that you have real hands on experience right from the moment you start. From the first day, graduates are responsible for: • The coordination of real advertising campaigns. • Meeting and liaising with clients to discuss and identify their advertising requirements. • Working with agency colleagues to devise an advertising campaign that meets the client’s brief and budget, in turn presenting these campaigns alongside agency colleagues. Advertising is not for the faint hearted. The work is challenging but for the brave, it will be a defining moment in their career with endless opportunities.
