Hope for our future
As we bask in the glow of a banner year for Greenbelt Land Trust (culminating in the incredible conservation story of 428 acres permanently protected at Oak Basin!), I am filled with hope.
Hope rests beneath the winter mud as the first signs of camas and checkermallow lie in wait for spring. Hope shines in the leadership of our Tribal partners leading inspiring Land Back initiatives across the region. And hope is embodied in the youth on trails, exploring rivers, and learning to love and tend the lands they live within.
One of my favorite moments from 2024 was the launch of Greenbelt’s Mighty Acorns Club - a free youth membership for aspiring environmentalists. Our first sign-ups were offered at Music on the Land in June, and within a few short months we had almost 200 kiddos enrolled!
Throngs of children line up at Greenbelt’s stream table, learning about beavers and sediment. They stand in Mulkey Creek, scooping up macroinvertebrates as they learn about the life cycle of bugs. Children as young as 2 years old leave volunteer workdays gleefully covered in mud from planting camas bulbs that will soon revive prairies.
I see families looking to nurture the kindling of hope for a better future.
This is the power of the Greenbelt community. Thank you for working together with us to build a brighter future - a hopeful future for nature and for our children.

Conservation success depends on organizational effectiveness. At Greenbelt Land Trust we carry out our work with a deep commitment to accountability and transparency to our members, volunteers, and partners.
We seek to make use of every dollar donated to Greenbelt Land Trust with careful attention to effectiveness, and our financials are audited annually.
2024 IN PICTURES

VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR
Elizabeth Who
Elizabeth Who has been a dedicated Thursday Volunteer Steward since we began the program two years ago, showing up almost every week to pull weeds, plant bulbs, cut out old fence, and take on dozens of other tasks. She is also an education volunteer for our families and youth programs, and frequently leads the crew on Thursdays when staff can’t attend
Elizabeth’s dedication and leadership in our volunteer program is a highlight for Volunteer Manager Jean Fleming, who says Elizabeth doesn’t need any encouragement to get things done. Quite the opposite:
“Whenever we are wrapping up and I tell folks that we will start heading back, Elizabeth wants to pull ‘one more root-ball’ or plant ‘ten more bulbs’ and it feels like I will have to drag her away.”
In just two years, Elizabeth has given 252 hours to Greenbelt as a volunteer. Her energy and enthusiasm for all tasks in all weather are an inspiration to us all. We are thrilled to celebrate Elizabeth Who as our Volunteer of the Year!
PARTNERS OF THE YEAR
Marys River Watershed Council - Youth Watershed Council
AWARDS 2025
Greenbelt is excited to recognize Marys River Watershed Council’s Youth Watershed Council (YWC) high school students as our partners of the year. Each spring, the Watershed Council recruits ~20 high school students to attend a summer workshop (home base Bald Hill Farm!) to explore their watershed – hiking in different habitats, interacting with natural resource professionals, conducting experiments like water quality sampling, and helping with habitat restoration. Then, they are provided volunteer opportunities in the community and luckily for Greenbelt, YWC students have made a strong showing at our outreach events for families!
YWC students staffed arts and craft tables, made native wildflower seedballs, showed families how to use a jeweler's loop to observe butterflies and moths, and hosted a quiz with true/false facts about native bees They’ve planted wild strawberries and onion in the butterfly flyway area of Bald Hill Farm, and allowed us to offer many fun, hands-on educational stations at our Fall Family Fun Fest.
It is inspiring and hopeful to see their love and enthusiasm for learning about the natural world and we are thrilled to see that they are so willing to share this with other members of our community.
CHARLES ROSS AWARD
Bill and Nan Beck
There are countless ways in which Bill and Nan Beck have exemplified leadership at Greenbelt Land Trust over the last 20 years. From Bill dedicating 6 years serving on the board of directors, as well as additional stints on Greenbelt’s finance and investment committees, to rolling up his sleeves to tackle invasive plants on countless volunteer days, to being a vigilant recruiter for Greenbelt members and volunteers (if you are Bill’s dentist or neighbor, chances are he has talked to you about Greenbelt!).
And yet, beyond the exhaustive hours that Bill and Nan have dedicated to Greenbelt, the contributions that shine the brightest may be their passion for engaging the next generation in conservation.
To Bill and Nan, their seven grandchildren are not only a source of immense pride, but they are a beacon of hope for the next generation - they hold the opportunity to pass along an appreciation for the natural world around us. Grandchildren who lived close enough were brought on rainy Saturday mornings to plant camas bulbs at Owens Farm, and took part in summer canoe trips down the Willamette River with Greenbelt Christmas gifts included gift memberships to Greenbelt Land Trust from Grandma and Grandpa. Bill and Nan Beck – always thinking of ways to help, to raise awareness for our shared responsibility to protect and steward our home here in the Willamette Valley.
The Charles Ross Award recognizes people who have helped to shape Greenbelt into what it is today and who carry the values of leadership and community-building that our organization was founded on. Bill and Nan are two such individuals whose strong commitment to conservation shines bright!
A Conservation Legacy Oak Basin Protected in the Coburg Hills
In late 2024, Greenbelt announced the completion of a conservation easement with Jim and Ed Merzenich that permanently protects 428 acres of diverse prairie and forest habitat in the Coburg Hills. Greenbelt now conserves over 2,000 acres in this priority conservation area.
Jim and Ed began acquiring the pieces of what would become Oak Basin Tree Farm in 1993, with a goal of leaving a legacy for their families. They saw a place to grow and recreate, and for Jim, a longtime US Forest Service forester, to practice his vision of sustainable, climate-forward forestry and land management.
On the 933 acres they acquired, they found another legacy they could leave: a mosaic of high elevation oak and prairie habitats containing a key population of the then-endangered Fender’s blue butterfly, its host plant Kincaid’s lupine, and dozens of other imperiled oak and prairie plant and animal species.
The Merzenichs have been active members of the Willamette Valley conservation community since establishing the tree farm, building strategic partnership with multiple federal agencies and conservation nonprofits, performing oak release projects and prescribed burns, and tackling invasive species across the property.
After several years of partnership and careful consideration, the boundaries of a conservation easement were drawn on 428 acres of the best prairie and oak habitat on the tree farm, where land management will be for habitat exclusively.
The legacy that the Merzenichs are creating at Oak Basin is a shining example of the importance of private land conservation in the Willamette Valley and the power of conservation easements to permanently protect ecological values. We are proud to be partners in their conservation legacy.
For the Merzenichs, placing a conservation easement on the rare habitat that they steward is a way to ensure that the conservation legacy of their property continues beyond their lifetimes and in perpetuity.
Oak Basin Tree Farm is a working landscape, and the easement was designed to ensure that sustainable timber management and commercial timber operations could continue outside of the easement, while maximizing habitat protection within its boundaries.
Oak Basin Tree Farm is a living laboratory to demonstrate responsible stewardship. Tree farms can be managed to improve habitat while returning benefits to the landowner. I think conservation of rare habitat is the best use of the land and it pays in the long term. In 100 years, well-managed properties in conservation easements will be treasured.
