As always, I ask that each division try to participate in Safety Insight, be it by sending in an article, a safety product you love, a good (or bad) safety situation you’ve encountered at your division, a safety improvement, or even just a “Safety Spotlight” candidate for the Quarter. Pete has over 23 years of experience working in Safety, Risk Management, & Worker’s Compensation. He is a Certified Safety Professional and has a BS Degree from NIU and ISU in Occupational Safety & Health.

Pete is a member of many safety organizations including ASSE, AIHA and PPSA.

Andrea started her career with GBP in the summer of 2012 as a graphics intern. Andrea was hired on as the graphics coordinator at the beginning of 2013. Andrea has a Bachelor’s Degree in Graphic Design with a minor in Applied Photography. She’s always looking for innovative techniques and new outlets for her ever-expanding collection of ideas.

Corrugator Supervisor Fremont division

Robert has 12 1/2 years of experience in the corrugated industry and has spent all of those years with Green Bay Packaging Inc. Fremont! He was hired as a production employee and was promoted to a Production Supervisor in the Corrugator Department February of 2014. He enjoys the challenges of his job and the opportunity to work together as a team to work safely and produce quality board.

WITH PETER MASIAS

What is your current position and how long have you been with GBP? My current position is Corporate Director of Safety & Risk Management. I have been in this role for the past 10 years. I have been in the “safety business” for the past 24 years.

In what way(s) does your current position influence GBP’s safety efforts?

As my title would indicate, I am responsible for the direction of the Company’s safety efforts. I work with all Divisions to provide a safe working environment for our employees and to comply with all Corporate, Federal, State, and local safety regulations. In addition, I purchase the Company’s Casualty Insurances, and manage these types of claims as well.

Why is safety important to you?

Our single most important asset is our employees. As such, providing them with a safe workplace, appropriate training, and good leadership is essential. Nothing that we do here is so important that we cannot take the time to do it safely.

The value that GBP places on relationships with customers and employees is second to none.

How would you rate GBP’s current efforts regarding safety?

2015 was the best year that we have ever had by some measures. For instance, our OSHA Incident Rate was down roughly 15% from the previous year and we had fewer Workers Compensation Claims. However, we had 110 incidents in which an employee was treated outside of work for an injury that they sustained at work. Overall I would say that we have shown significant improvements but we still have a lot of room for improvement.

Questions Asked by Andrea Manor What do you attribute

the recent safety improvements to?

There are a variety of things that I would attribute to our safety improvements to. First the senior leadership at GBP has placed an increased emphasis on safety and has communicated this to the Divisional leadership. Second my staff (Nancy Kraszewski, Patty Debroux, and Paul Bucek) has done a great job supporting the Division’s efforts to provide a safe workplace.

Lastly, I would say that the Divisional leadership has done a great job in their efforts to improve safety as well.

How well have the Peer Safety Audits worked?

In my opinion, the Peer Safety Audit Program has been a total success. It allows our Divisional employees to audit one another.

This affords the employees the opportunity to visit a Division that they probably would never visit, to share their knowledge with that Division, and to learn about all the good things that Division does. It is truly an opportunity to share with one another and to build positive relationships. I hope to continue to expand this program in the coming years.

What can we do to improve our current safety culture?

I am a strong believer in being present at the Divisions, which is why I travel about 60% of my time. It is very difficult for me to improve our safety culture from my office here in Green Bay, WI. In this same regard I want to encourage the Divisional leadership to spend time on the production floor coaching and counseling our employees on working safely.

Working safely requires constant effort and attention.

In your opinion, what makes GBP a great company to work for?

It is great to work for a solid company with a great culture. The value that GBP places on relationships with customers and employees is second to none. The Company reinvests a lot back in to our facilities, equipment, and training. I certainly feel supported in my efforts to provide a safe working environment.

At the end of your career what impact do you hope your leadership has made on safety in the Pulp and Paper Industry?

I hope that we are able to continue our positive progress on working more safely at GBP. I am fortunate that the Company allows me to serve on the Pulp and Paper Safety Association’s Board and the Fiber Box Association’s Safety Committee. Through these organizations I hope to have a broader impact on the industry by sharing my knowledge as well as our Company’s safety successes and failures so that others can learn from them. *Watch for Q & A’s with Eddie Sigala from El Paso and Scott Aschenbrenner from Wausau in upcoming issues.

FREEMONT DIVISION The Fremont Division recently purchased three new roll pushers for the corrugator department.

Not only to upgrade what we currently have but more importantly, we wanted to improve the overall safety of roll pushers for our employees.

After testing out a couple different types including a battery powered roll pusher, we decided to go with Moviroll MR 100S and the optional air supply kit. The air supply kit included a spiral air hose that extends over 40 feet in each direction, never touching the floor.

This is a huge improvement.

Not only does the new airline cover more area but more importantly it eliminates a major trip hazard we have had in our department for years! The Moviroll pusher is light weight, easy to move around and much more powerful than the ones we had been using. This is an all-around improvement in safety. Currently we have one new roll pusher set up at the double backer location. The other two pushers are set to arrive at the end of the month. So far everyone is pleased with the way it handles and with the overall safety improvements.

50 YEAR ANNIVERSARIES

ARKANSAS KRAFT DIVISION

Arkansas Kraft Division’s paper mill celebrated the 50th anniversary of its presence in Conway County with a celebration for employees, families and guests on Saturday. Executives of Green Bay Packaging, along with other prominent members of the community attended the event at the mill, which included tours, games, and food for current and past employees and family members.

General Manager William Cone praised Green Bay Packaging founders George and Marguerite Kress, for their foresight in choosing the area to build the mill in 1965. He showed the crowd a photo of the Kress’s with the Arkansas Governor Winthrop Rockefeller at the ground braking for the facility on May 17th, 1965. He also thanked the employees and their families for their dedication to the company over the years. “Making paper is not a simple process,” he told the crowd. “I’m very proud of your work ethic.”

Matt Symansky, president of mill operations, praised the leadership and the employees for their commitment to excellence. He also thanked the customers and the vendors who have stood with the company through the challenges of increasing performance. “We are proud to be a part of this great story”, he told the crowd.

Bryan Hollenbach, recounted a history of the plant from 1965. He noted that Green Bay Packaging owns 264,00 acres of land, 240,000 of which are in Arkansas. The mill averages over 1,300 tons of products per day. Hollenbach said that there have been many changes in the business and the world over the past 50 years, but the division’s strong employee base is one of the most important components to it’s success.

Cone announced that the plant’s No. 2 machine would be named after Jim Kress, chairman of Green Bay Packaging since 1995. The machine will be named the “Jim Dandy” and will be marked with a sign matching the one on the No. 1 machine, “Captain George,” named after founder George Kress.

FREEMONT DIVISION

Green Bay Packaging Inc. Fremont celebrated 50 years of business with an Open House on Saturday August 15, 2015. We had almost 500 employees and their families as well as retirees join us for this celebration at the facility. Their safety was critical to the success of the day. Some of the ways safety played a key role were: •The Planning Team was a cross functional team, including the Safety Manager and members of the Safety Committee.

•Forklift drivers were on the set up and clean up team; to help with moving heavier items.

•A new safety banner was ordered and prominently displayed at the entrance of the celebration area •Retirees had expressed a concern that sitting in low chairs and getting up is getting more challenging; so the Design Department’s stand up tables came in very handy.

•A “Tour Map” was developed to assure visitors stayed outside of machine areas.

•Signs were put up to direct the traffic flow.

•A Safety Committee Member wearing a yellow reflective vest was assigned to work each hour to oversee and be available for any concerns.

•Employees were encouraged to provide input and did so.

There was one walkway area that the Production and Shipping Team were concern about. The Team met and came up with an idea for improvement and it was taken care of immediately.

KALAMAZOO DIVISION

ARKANSAS KRAFT DIVISION

Safety comes first with the use of trailer jack stands.

In the middle of 2014 we tested a few trailer jack stands in Kalamazoo. You can spend anywhere between $200 and $1,500 depending on the style and quality that you want. The Kalamazoo Division decided to go with the TS-2000 model from Rite-Hite distributed by Applied Handling. The other jack stand models we tried were not user friendly and didn’t withstand the elements like the TS-2000. A couple of the features that make the TS-2000 standout are the 6” x 30” top plate along with the large 16” x 20” base pad. We did a full implementation using the trailer jack stands 100% of the time in 2015. Our standard practice is that our carriers place the jack stands under the trailers and we have additional checks in place to ensure 100% compliance. At first it was very difficult to implement, especially due to the long winters and heavy amounts of snowfall that we receive; however you can’t put a price on what you can prevent. As of now we never have to worry if a trailer’s landing gear fails. Trailer jack stands are a wonderful tool to ensure we operate in a safe work environment.

Arkansas Kraft Division safety task force (and safety champions) have teamed up to make vast improvements throughout the mill.

Their latest project for eye wash stations is no different. The AKD family has completed an overhaul of all the eyewash stations in the Steam & Recovery area. The previous eyewash stations were identified as having some complications and over the past few months they have all been evaluated and replaced. The team overcame many obstacles including problems with the stations freezing up in cold weather. The eyewash project will continue in other departments in the mill making it a safer place one day at a time.

EL PASO El Paso’s recent safety improvements:

In one of our production meetings in El Paso, it was brought up that the cat walks on the conveyors are very narrow and a hazard for spraining an ankle. We remedied this by making them double wide.

Then, when we had our yearly Fire Inspection last year (2014), one of the Fire Marshals asked “how would the employees get over the conveyor safely in the event of a fire?”. He left us with homework to look for a solution. We all got together to brainstorm and decided that the best simple solution would be to implement a ramp (similar

to what we already had on the cat walks going to our J&L). We add these ramps to all the cat walks on the main conveyor. The Fire Marshall returned this year (2015) for our Yearly Inspection and congratulated us on the ramps. Recently we added the anti slip tape to the ramps to avoid slips from the fine paper dust that settles throughout the plant. By working together as a team, brainstorming, listening to everyone’s ideas and being engaged we can accomplish our goal of zero accidents.
