Javier Barba, born in Barcelona, hails from a family with a rich architectural and building tradition spanning 100 years. Architecture runs in his blood, and he studied the discipline at the School of Architecture in Barcelona. Barba was inspired by a greater vision beyond renowned architects like Frank Lloyd Wright. He understood that a building must not only function effectively but also harmoniously blend with its surroundings. His approach to sustainability predates the trend, incorporating passive solar elements and drawing influence from local architecture that has always responded to factors such as wind, morphology, and temperatures. Using materials from the site, Barba ensures that his designs seamlessly integrate with the environment.

In 1980, Barba founded BC Estudio Architects, and quickly attracted clients from both Spain and abroad. His work caught the attention of Architectural Digest, where he was exclusively featured in over 14 publications. Starting with residential commissions, residential developments, boutique hotels, wineries, golf clubs, and more. BC Estudio's approach is akin to haute couture architecture-customized, evocative, and welcoming as if it has always belonged.

Currently serving as the CEO of BC Estudio Barba leads a team that shares his passion for architecture, interior design and landscape. Together, they strive to create meaningful, captivating designs that elicit both function and emotion.

Borobudur Resort Hotel

Architecture, Landscape, Interior Design Hospitality Java, Indonesia

"Preserving Paradise: Luxury Design in the Shadows of Borobudur"

Embedded atop a hill with views of the Buddhist temple of Borobudur in Central Java, the design of the Luxury Resort Hotel embraces the challenge of preserving the virginity of the location, drawing inspiration from the topography and vernacular style of the region.

Three water courses organize the various sectors of the complex. The central water axis, visually aligned with the temple, creates ponds and waterfalls that enhance the acoustics and visuals of communal areas. The resort entrance stands out with a courtyard surrounded by local stone walls and a bridge crossing the lake surrounding the main Javanese pavilion, or "pendopo," leading to the common areas.

The other two waterways delineate the complex, guiding through cross paths to the bungalows with green roofs that seamlessly integrate into the terraced rice landscape, minimizing environmental impact. The concept of privacy, integration with the surroundings, and its high functionality reflect a commitment to preserving the spiritual and natural essence of this extraordinary place and a new way of understanding luxury vacation resorts.

“Where Water Meets Luxury"

Water is the core of this project, arising from the concept of creating an artificial river based on a feature of the existing topography. This river serves as a fundamental axis in the design of the complex, shaping a landscape with paths, pools by the beach and bridges, generating the distinctive character of the boutique hotel areas.

In terms of circulation, an external route allows electric vehicles to pass through, while pedestrian paths offer guests a variety of routes and spaces.

The main building acts as a central arrival and meeting point. The ground floor houses the lobby, administration, lounges, bar and restaurants, while the first floor is reserved exclusively for suites. In the basement, a parking area, general services and a spa extending to terraces by the river.

Three types of accommodation located on individual plots proposed different living experiences in nature. The "Presidential" with exclusive design, maximum privacy and incomparable views of the river and the Atlas Mountains. The "Seniors" occupy the highest part of the terrain in terraces, reflecting the Moroccan Kasbah style. Finally, the "Juniors" cluster around outdoor spaces, capturing the essence of traditional Islamic gardens.

The inclusion of productive gardens, with fruits, vegetables and herbs, contribute to the hotel's culinary offering and complement the sustainable integration of the proposal.

“Sustainable Luxury: Tenerife's Eco-Resort Vision"

The masterplan for this Eco-resort on Tenerife focuses on preserving the local orography and landscape, steering away from typical resort stereotypes to immerse visitors in the natural surroundings.

Organized around a water axis perpendicular to the coast, the resort features spaces enriched by cascades, a kayaking-friendly artificial lake, successive pools, and a recreational area for both children and adults.

Linearly flanking on both sides of the water axis are hotels spanning three floors, offering a total of 300 rooms in Deluxe and Junior Suite configurations, each equipped with amenities and a balcony or terrace. Luxury facilities areas are also included, such as the spa, fitness center, and dining establishments.

The objective is to establish a uniquely luxurious retreat in a prime location, providing access to San Blas beach, a traditional fishing village, nearby restaurants and shops, and the Golf del Sur tourist center.

Noteworthy landscaping incorporates local species, creating visually stunning spaces with palm trees, cactus, and succulents on a base of natural stones.

“Stone Walls and Curved Lines, The Perfect Balance, Privacy and Openness Layout”

In Porto Heli, this cluster of tourist houses embodies a perfect symbiosis with its natural surroundings. A development project in stages, it includes two sloping plots and varied solutions in terms of residential typologies and common services. All of this complies with the conditions and community standards for tourist accommodation.

Partially buried in the undulating green hills that embrace them, these residences seamlessly integrate into the landscape. The rear access, openings within the hill, is discreet and imparts a sense of anticipation, leading to the entrance of the dwelling-a protected space that opens the connection to the landscape and the ever-present sea.

This condition of successive living planes is characteristic of cave houses, a unique experience of homes that organically emerge from the earth. Contrasting facades, from the concealed to the majestic windows and terraces that open to breathtaking panoramas.

The architecture here is not only aesthetic but also functional and sustainable, utilizing local materials such as stone and green roofs. Intriguing pathways through gardens connect with water features in beautiful pools, enhancing the enjoyment of outdoor spaces.

Baja California, Mexico

"Untouched serenity: a resort that emerges from the site”

Punta San Basilio is one of the most stunning places in Baja California, renowned for the pristine beauty of its mountains and beaches, with an extensive untouched coastline. The proposed mountainside resort comprises 100 junior apartments and 50 master suites.

The spectacular and mysterious entrance design enhances the charm of the place. A winding path ascends to 50 meters above sea level, revealing a large esplanade with native vegetation and 360º panoramic views that hide the main entrance of the hotel. In the center, a large staircase descends, following the curvature and framing a water garden, to the level that houses the social areas of the complex, which include reception, lobby, restaurant, bar and lounges.

From here, the junior apartments descend following the contours of the land, forming integrated terraces with earth roofs that naturally isolate the rooms. The 50 master suites are located on the opposite slope. Both wings of the complex extend along the slopes, converging naturally as they reach the oasis, the river flowing through the valley. The second social area is located in this small natural oasis, it has a bar, restaurants and swimming pool, all with impressive views of Manglito Bay, the rock pier and the islets of Santa Estela and Nido.

"Balinese Grandeur: A Unique Blend of Tradition and Luxury"

La location of the land, on a spectacular cliff in the southern Indonesian island of Bali, with its breathtaking beauty, presented the immediate challenge of creating an integrated design that would allow its visitors to enjoy a unique place in the world.

The complex consists of 40 "Villas" and 10 "Oceanfront Residences," common areas (Reception, Lounges, and Restaurants), amenities (Health club, tennis court), and a coastal Beach Club.

The presence of The One and only Billionaire Club in Asia (restaurants, outdoor areas on different levels, and a pool) suggests an exclusive and high-level space for the elite. Outdoor areas on different levels and a pool within the Billionaire Club further emphasize the opulence and sophistication of the project.

The fusion of traditional Balinese architecture with contemporary design featuring elegant lines, modern materials, and cutting-edge technology adds depth and character to the project, making it stand out in the competitive landscape of luxury accommodation.

The remarkable discovery of an ancient marble quarry buried within a rugged promontory became the focal point of the project, a captivating surprise as different areas were gradually revealed.

The imposing irregular rock, with a waterfall, creates an imposing setting for the magnificent pool whose tone reflects the serenity of the surrounding sea.

The magic of the place is enhanced by an exquisite display of Mediterranean vegetation on the different terraces, olive trees, cypresses, various shrubs and lavender.

The use of native materials, marble, tiles, in elements such as the pavilion, the roman baths, the facilities, the entrance patio and terraces, and an original Roman mosaic and sculptures achieve a harmonious fusion with the traditional architecture of this island, impregnated in Italian influence.

"A Summer Retreat on the Rocky Promontory”

The strength of this project derives from the harmonious synergy between its location and architectural concept. Situated on a spectacular rocky promontory, it offers panoramic views of Mykonos, its harbor, and the Aegean islands.

Comprising two sun-oriented residences shielded from northern winds, the design is focalized around a tower reminiscent of ancient fortifications. A powerful white and stone volumes emerge from the cliff.

The surrounding outdoor spaces are organized by stone walls, creating courtyards, shaded areas, and solariums for two pools, as well as paths along the cliffs enhancing the experience. Mediterranean vegetation thrives luxuriantly, especially on the wind-protected slopes.

In pursuit of seamless integration and privacy, indigenous stone was meticulously carved to reposition the houses. This alteration in elevation engenders shifting perceptions of the buildings, from the approach it appears as a single-level structure, while from the sea, the levels cascade into terraced layers.

“Stone Walls and Curved Lines, The Perfect Balance, Privacy and Openness Layout”

Located just two hours from Athens, this single-family residence relates perfectly to its surroundings through the use of three elements: green roof, stone and water.

The organic design of the floor plan alternates straight and curved lines in the spaces, creating an interesting and dynamic architectural aesthetic.

The use of wood at the main entrance as a connecting link between the walls brings warmth and contrast to the design.

Water plays a central role in the residence, it is the axis that runs through the house. It appears in the form of a pond at the entrance, a canal running between stone walls in the master suite and living room, a small pool extending from the suite bathroom and finally an infinity pool surrounded by a sun terrace and porch.

“Living with elegance”

Single-family house located in the upper area of Barcelona. The house is located at the highest point of the land to obtain the best views of the sea, the city of Barcelona and also the Serra de Collserola.

The use of materials, a combination of concrete and wood, gives a contemporary aesthetic to the building.
