Why Does Sustainability Matter So Much? By now, it is very safe to say that all of us, children and adults alike, know the definition of sustainability as taught in our educational institutions. But why does it matter? Or Why do we always need to talk about it, or do we really even need to talk about it? Against popular opinion, we would say that grafting consciousness towards this consequential matter is of grave importance. Of course Sustainability matters! Why? Because our care for the future gets mixed with our inertia, or what could be more correctly put as ‘ignorance’, which leads us to feeling the need to preach and understand this concept as much as possible. We all in our own ways, like to care about our future. Whether it meaning economically sustaining yourself, or doing things which might not have a detrimental effect for the society, or even making ways to secure the future of our kids, sustainability comes in every aspect.
So whether it is about sustaining resources or sustaining economic viability of both individuals and businesses, or sustaining our present relationship with our environment, sustainability is central and crucial to any long term engagement. According to a report by United Nations Environment Protection (UNEP), Sustainability is a driving force for all the work that we do, which also guides how we do it. Moreover, the point is that – sustainability becomes essentially important for the ‘quality of our environment’, meaning that in order to have and live in healthy communities, we need clean air, natural resources and a ‘Non-toxic environment’.
