The Greeley Garden Tour & the Poudre Learning Center

The Greeley Garden Tour has existed for more than 20 years and during that time visitors have toured over a hundred beautiful and varied gardens in our community. Even more important, those who have supported the tour through advertisements, donations and ticket purchases, as well as opening their yard up to the public, have funded scholarships each year to UNC nursing students. The most exciting news is that Greeley Garden Tour supporters enabled the garden tour committee to fund an endowment of over $100,000 to the UNC Foundation. This endowment will fund at least two scholarships annually to outstanding UNC nursing students for $1,000 each, forever. The Greeley Garden Tour met our goal of supporting nursing education in the community. We are now committed to providing support to the Poudre Learning Center. This unique gem in our community provides education about our environment to thousands of school children each year. The partnership between the Greeley Garden Tour and the Poudre Learning Center, provides a unique opportunity to support another nonprofit organization and visit their beautiful gardens.

Garden Tour Committee

Leona Kepler, Jan Martin, Anne Masterson, Judy Richter, Ruth Quade, Eve Timm, Paulette Weaver, Pam Wright, Natalie Stevens, Sunshine Gearhart, and Mary Jansen-Hedrick. Thanks to the many volunteers who participated during the year and the day of the tour.

Greeley Art Association plein air painters are pleased to be able to participate in the Greeley Garden Tour. Artists will be painting at the Gardens. Poudre Learning Center 8313 West F Street

The Poudre Learning Center’s (PLC) mission is to awaken a sense of wonder and inspire environmental stewardship and citizenship through education of students, families and local residents along the Colorado Northern Front Range. As you pull into the parking lot you will be in front of the main building. The PLC building was constructed with recycled materials from the old Hazelton School after being relocated from 71st Avenue and 10th Street. There are 65 acres to explore, investigate and learn from along the three miles of walking trails, four habitats (dominated by short-grass prairie, a lake, wetland and riparian area) and our gardens. The Sensory Garden is located on the east side of the schoolhouse. This garden is not only aesthetically pleasing and symmetrical, but offers a great diversity in textures, colors, bloom times, plant heights, food sources and scents which attract and benefit a wide diversity of wildlife – making this garden beautiful and functional! Proceed around the circle and see how each sense is highlighted and elicited at the sight, smell, touch, taste and hearing beds. What is it about the gaillardia (blanket flower) that triggers your ears to perk up? Or what happens to your taste buds as you see bountiful kale and rhubarb overflowing from the bed? Is it hard to resist not touching the velvety lamb’s ears or smelling the fragrant lilies? Although all of these plants might trigger a few of our senses it is fun to see what sense gets overpowered, so enjoy the tranquility of this garden as it comes alive! The Native Plant Garden is located in front of the schoolhouse on the south side of the building. These plants are regionally adapted to Northern Colorado and showcase how a naturalistic landscape could be incorporated into your own garden. The predominant smell will come from the chocolate flower which is in full bloom during this time of year. What does this smell remind you of – tea, chocolate, coffee, brownies? As the smell makes your stomach growl make sure to pop inside the schoolhouse again to grab some snacks and beverages and to ask any questions you may have. The PLC is Garden “A” on the map.

Cathy and Larry Lande 2634 55th Avenue

The front entrance to the Lande home welcomes visitors with a colorful mixture of tea roses, lilies, ice plant and salvia. A large maple provides shade and protection for a variety of plants thriving close to the home such as roses, wigelia and orange carpet. A large showy mountain ash on the south side of the home provides a canopy for hydrangea and hostas. Proceed to the south side of the home and as you relax to the music piped into the back yard, you will find that you have entered a woodland park. Majestic trees along the east side of the property, such as aspen, blue spruce, tree of heaven and assorted evergreens provide a forest backdrop for the gardens. Two waterfalls cascade to ponds below and embrace an abundance of colorful annuals and perennials. Some of the species you will find along the curved garden beds on the east side include butterfly bush, oriental poppy, barberry, columbine, and wild geranium. Children will delight at the fish darting about the pond on the northeast side of the yard. They are welcome to feed the fish. Of course the kids may be more interested in exploring the playhouse adjacent to the pond, a dream come true for a young child. Adults and children are free to step inside and enjoy the delightful play area, complete with ladder and loft. MON - THURS 8:30am - 10:30pm FRI - SAT 8:30am - 11:30pm SUN 10:00am - 6:00pm

Rotating vegetable crops helps prevent depletion of soil nutrients, build-up of soil-born pests and diseases.

The gardens at the back of the home include a large variegated dogwood, and bright green creeping jenny ground cover adjacent to an unusual perennial with ruby leaves, Bergeria Bressingham. In this bed you will also enjoy peonies, Jupiter’s beard, spirea and asters. Please step up to the spacious outdoor living space complete with fireplace and find a spot to sit and take in the ambiance of the wonderland around you. The large pots on the tiered deck are abundant with a variety of colorful annuals and grasses. As you listen to the chorus of the waterfalls, commingling with the piped in music, and enjoy the feast of colorful gardens, it is not hard to imagine large groups of people enjoying the sights and sounds of the Lande gardens. In fact, the family has hosted numerous celebrations in this very welcoming and tranquil setting. After relaxing a bit, you can return the way you entered the gardens. Or you can proceed to the north side of the property and exit adjacent to a lush hedge of snowball viburnum. The Lande is Garden “B” on the map.

Sally and Scott Lorenz 1105 50th Avenue

“Art is immeasurable... and so is design,” a favorite quote of Scott’s, is very evident in this spectacular arrangement of gardens situated on the boundary of County Club West open space. Every aspect of the Lorenz gardens is deliberate and reflects Scott and Sally’s love of art and nature. Begin your tour north of the driveway where a burr oak towers above a variety of species below such as a desert mahonia, a prunus maackii, tree peonies, mock orange, a hemlock and a smoke tree. Before proceeding to the “Boulevard Garden” that spreads openly along 50th Avenue – observe “Ode to Durango”. The cedar brought from Sally’s family home has been uniquely trimmed by Scott, and is the centerpiece of this gate area of the garden which honors Sally’s roots. As you walk the boulevard garden you encounter an open space accented with color from perennial and annual flowers. Scott’s bonsai and stunted treatment of the ponderosa pines at the north end atop a rocked berm is an example of his artistry, evident throughout the tour.

Scott designed the fence and three gates on the property. First of which is the “Perspective Gate” which opens your passage to the back yard. The canopy of oak leaf mountain ash trees begins the “Mountain Garden”. Bosnian pines and a fringe tree drape along the walkway and stream flowing through the descending land spilling into a pond that is home to several happy koi. Before crossing the bridge, notice the interacting Russian hawthorns on the far end by the fence.Yes, a dead pine beside the pooling waters is intentionally left for its organic beauty and bird bathers’ ‘drying’ perch. Watch your step as you visit the upper deck offering its higher views and take in the coolness of shade in the lower bistro patio below... so shady – that only house plants excel. The “Double Heart Gate” offers a magnificent view of the open space adjacent to the property. The “Western Oriental” garden in the back yard includes a variety of species such as amur maples, an Eastern Redbud, a “spurred” Cockspur Hawthorn, an apricot tree and a couple more bonsai ponderosas. Exit back to the front yard through the “Conversation Gate” and follow the path through a wooded thicket that harbors a young gingko, protected with sumac and scrub oak. At the front door is a tricolored birch providing a willowy accent entwined into the branches of a rugged Scotch pine. Proceeding to the street along the driveway is an Ohio buckeye and a Kentucky coffee tree. In summary, as Scott suggests, “nature is the teacher of all things. If you want ideas for your garden, take a walk….and learn.” The Lorenz is Garden “C” on the map.

Pat and Steve Allnutt 4304 W. 14th Street Road

Begin the tour at the front of the Allnutt home where you will enjoy the shade of a robust oak tree and to the east side of the yard a majestic ornamental fruit tree. A colorful mixture of shrub roses, cranesbill, and vinca provide a welcome to visitors as they approach the front door.

Proceed through the south east gate which will draw you to the lush back yard with numerous cozy seating areas. Be sure to follow the stairs to the upper deck before exploring the backyard. Here you will find a magnificent view of the gardens in the back yard. A lovely seating area adorned with snowball viburnum emerging from large pots, will entice you to stay awhile. When you are ready to return to the gardens below you will notice that the towering boxwood hedge provides wonderful privacy from the adjacent street. Hydrangea and peonies are favorites of the Allnutts and they appear along the east and south side of the home. The gardens are enhanced throughout with hanging baskets and pots that reveal unique combinations of ferns from California commingling with Colorado natives and begonias. The curved landscape along the back and west side contain a mixture of colorful and cooling perennials, shrubs and trees. Notice in particular the purple and while iris, spirea, Daphne, and rose of Sharon, as well as two young cherry trees, one on the south side and one on the west side. A rose garden with varied brilliant blooms is featured along the back patio. As you proceed to the front of the home feel free to peek inside the small greenhouse at the varied herbs that Steve and Pat enjoy. Before you exit the gardens be sure to notice the variegated beech tree tucked close to the home for a sweet surprise. The Allnut Garden is Garden “D on the map.

Pam Wright and Hal Kappius 333 N. 46th Ave. Court

As you prepare to tour the diverse and lovely gardens adjacent to Pam and Hal’s home, you will be amazed at what they have accomplished in six years. The couple completely transformed the landscape which was largely rock. A young autumn blaze maple is planted in the front yard in relationship to the massive sweeping pampas grass on the south side. At the front of the home you will spot an old fashioned moonflower vine that has volunteered under the protection of two large pots of annuals. The pots are flowing with unique and colorful vegetation such as the mandevilla, and native grasses. Ninebark provides a back drop to iris, lilies and an assortment of groundcover that gives texture and a soothing gray accent. Enter the backyard from the north side of the property. Follow the robust hedge of viburnum to your right and watch your step as you follow the downward slope of the property. Be sure to notice the pumpkins and gourds draping down the terraced garden adjacent to the home. Pam and Hal lovingly refer to the circular garden in the center of the back as their crop circle. This garden, complete with a tree of pots, is also home to dahlias, bee balm, wild geranium, salvia and assorted annuals. A new plum tree and autumn blaze maple were planted last year to provide shade. As you look to the west you will notice that the garden provides layers of interest and a haven for wildlife. The fence along the western border of the property is draped with morning glory vines, miniature pumpkin, and sunflowers providing a pop of color and food for the birds. Nine bark and peonies form a border for the flowing dry creek bed while old fashioned phlox, iris and lilies are in the foreground. Stroll under the lush wisteria vine to the favorite section of the garden for the family. The pond draws

Pam and Hal to its borders most evenings where they can enjoy the interplay of darting fish, brilliant sunset and birds that share their garden paradise. Proceed under the deck and rest a bit enjoying the views of the back yard or better yet proceed to the upper deck to savor the expansive views of the western meadow in the distance. Your visit is E complete with a return to the north side of the property and a view of a large butterfly T bush that provides lovely contrast to the large smoke tree on the oppositeN side of the I yard. City of Greeley Water Conservation Xeriscape Demonstration Garden 2503 Reservoir Road

Parking is available in the driveway off of Reservoir Road leading into Centennial Pool.

This Xeric demonstration garden was designed in 1997 to show homeowners the variety of plants and techniques that they could try in their yards. The garden is home to two art projects, 25 tree species, four different turf grasses and numerous shrubs and perennials. As you approach the garden from the east you will notice an annual bed south of the stained and stamped concrete walkway. Annuals in this bed are zinnias, purple fountain grass, blue salvia, Dusty Miller, and alyssum. On the north side are ornamental grasses (Miscanthus). Behind the flowers along the fence are viburnum and lilacs ranging in color from deep purple to rose. Continuing along the walkway you will see various xeric perennials, yarrow, Rudibeckia, Oenothera, Callirhoe and others. The berm on the south has two Canadian Chokecherries. Opposite the berm are three different colors of daylilies. A large iris bed leads up to a shady area where cutleaf sumac and staghorn sumac, a weeping cherry and two ash trees shade the Denver gold columbine. Shrubs along the south side include potentilla and barberries. Next on this side is a pollinator garden. Moving west along the path are butterfly bush, yellow twig dogwood, and low grow sumac. Across the sidewalk on the north stop to admire the first Art in Public Places Project Oasis. Moving further west is a rock garden with many climate adapted plants which thrive in hot dry spots. Many species of ice plant, Apache plume, yucca, silver sage and sedums flourish.

19

A bronze sculpture stands proudly and gives height to this garden The triangle area at the far west is enclosed by Blue Grama grass that is left tall throughout the summer and allowed to go to seed and cut only in the fall. Ornamental grasses of all sizes are demonstrated here. Across from the bed to the north is another wheatgrass that was planted a couple of seasons ago when other grasses invaded it. Walking back west you will see a Catalpa, the largest tree in the garden. With its large heart shaped leaves and exotic looking flower it is a show stopper in early summer. This tree is a good drought tolerant shade tree that doesn’t spread out and fits on a narrower lot. At the Y in the path is a spring snow crab which doesn’t produce fruit and has a compact globe habit. Around the sitting area is an Indian Crab tree which retains its fruit to feed birds throughout the winter, a Japanese lilac tree, which blooms in early summer, and golden rain tree. Wind your way back down the path or move out to the street sidewalk and view the garden from the street side to view the Buffalo grass. The Greeley Xeriscape Garden is Garden “F” on the map.

Callissa Mariani 2200 Reservoir Road

Callissa, a creative master gardener, has transformed a forgotten small plot of land into a magical pocket garden. Morgan Nursery moved to this location in 1960. The property is currently a flower shop, cross stitch store, coffee shop, and hair salon. The hidden garden is tucked between the hair salon and the coffee shop. There are over a hundred different varieties of plants packed into this little gem of a garden. The tour begins at the Northeast corner of the property. The large front berm contains junipers, lilac, apple, catmint, rose of Sharon, and datura. Follow the path south along the front of the salon. The bed starts with a hedge of euonymus, and under an Austrian pine is a splash of colorful annuals. Continuing on both sides are beds filled with perennials including vinca, lilies, hardy hibiscus, hens and chicks, and gaillardia. Interspersed, among them are, sunflowers, snapdragons, and hanging baskets with calibrachoa. You will see concrete pots, and birdbaths bedazzled with stones, and glass throughout the garden. These were all made by Richard “Richie Rich Mariani’s father, a retired mason.

As the path continues there is yucca, red hot poker, trumpet vine, and clematis. Turn left and you will see black elderberry, cherry tomato, and a flowering almond that has been pruned into a small tree. A stunning sight when in full pink bloom. To the right is a large brick patio bordered on the East by a hillside garden filled with perennials including iris, mums, snow in summer, old fashion phlox, sedum, and much more. You will also spot a large frog, and turtle collection hiding among the plants. The garden is surrounded by a variety of large conifers, an ash, a hedge of holly and juniper, and ends with a Bechtel crab apple. Make your way back along the path until you see the cluster of strawberry pots, and annuals then go left. Pots filled with colorful annuals adorn an inviting patio in front of the cross stitch store. Continue on, staying to your left to see an eclectic variety of plants, flowers, and stone features in front of the flower shop. There are vinca, catmint, hardy hibiscus, hollyhock, and a purple leaf sand cherry. Make your way out through the archway draped with Virginia creeper.
