t’s time for America’s workforce to wake up. If you are one of the tens of millions of adults sleeping fewer than seven hours each night — the amount recommended by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) — you are likely jeopardizing performance, increasing accident risks and putting everyone in danger during commutes. Getting enough sleep every night is key to improving productivity, safety and quality of life. Here are some tips to make sleep work for you. DON’T BURN THE MIDNIGHT OIL Working late nights might impress your boss, but restricting your sleep can lead to trouble making decisions, solving problems, controlling emotions and more, severely affecting your productivity at work. The National Safety Council reports that workers who sleep fewer than six hours per night cost employers six days a year in productivity. SLEEP FOR SAFETY Workers who sleep less than six hours per night are also at higher risk for injury, according to the Sleep Research Society. Cognitive and motor performance impairments caused by sleep deprivation can be comparable to drinking alcohol. If you make it a daily priority to recognize the signs of fatigue before, during and after work, and refuse

to drive drowsy, you can reduce the risk of serious injury for yourself and others. This may be especially true if you work a job that involves manual labor or heavy machinery. STRATEGIES FOR NON-TRADITIONAL WORK HOURS Some of the more high-risk professions involve working irregular hours. Shift workers - who can be nurses, law enforcement officers, emergency responders, transportation operators and more - work overnight or early morning hours with irregular or rotating shifts, causing upheaval in the body’s circadian rhythm and natural sleep/ wake cycle. According to the AASM, shift workers may sleep up to four fewer hours per night than those working traditional hours, increasing the risk for injuries, accidents and drowsy driving. The CDC reports that serious long-term health problems are a concern, too.

However, there are ways for shift workers to combat this problematic sleep schedule. TIPS FOR ‘WAKE TIME’ • Avoid exposure to sunlight if you need to sleep during the day, and wear sunglasses if you must go outside. • Use moderate amounts of caffeine in the early part of your shift. • Use public transportation, rideshare or take a cab, or arrange rides from friends or family after a work shift. • Take a 20- to 30-minute nap during a work break or before a night shift. • Get help from a sleep specialist to reinforce your body clock with strategically timed bright light therapy. TIPS FOR ‘SLEEP TIME’ • Avoid caffeine and alcohol in the hours before you go to bed. • Plan for any major changes in your shift schedule by altering your

sleep time a few days in advance. • Try to keep the same schedule on workdays and days off and create an effective “wind down” routine before going to bed. • Keep your bedroom at a cool temperature, turn off all electronics and only do relaxing activities like reading or journaling. Use the National Healthy Sleep Awareness Project’s bedtime calculator, which helps you find your ideal bedtime based on when you need to wake up for work — even if that’s in the middle of the night. Getting at least seven hours of sleep isn’t just a matter of feeling alert for productivity and safety on the job; it’s a necessary component of good health and well-being. If you’re having trouble sleeping, you should talk to your doctor, who may refer you to a board-certified sleep medicine physician at an accredited sleep center for help. W

hen you think of automated vehicles, you probably think of driverless cars. While that particular movement is certainly in the news, it’s not the only place where driverless technology is gaining momentum. Did you know that driverless technology innovations are occurring every day in agriculture as well? While most of us won’t see this technology since it’s confined to the farm, driverless tractors are poised to change the way our food is grown. THE RACE TO AUTONOMY Today’s driverless tractors still need an operator to keep the tractor on task. But for 20 years, farm equipment manufacturers have been working on building a precision platform with GPS navigation to provide tractors with pure selfdriving automation. The ultimate goal is to offer farmers driverless equipment that is smart - or autonomous - so it can perform tasks completely independent of human intervention. The farm equipment industry has spent a couple of decades moving toward developing autonomous equipment, and the race to commercially market that equipment has recently moved into high gear. In 2016, both New Holland and Case IH introduced autonomous tractor prototypes, which the companies are still testing in the field. At the same time, John Deere signaled its commitment to autonomous machinery when it

acquired Blue River Technology - a company that specializes in computer vision and machine learning, key technologies for developing smart farm equipment. THE DIGITAL COMPONENT In addition to performing the desired tasks, smart farm equipment also has the ability to capture vital data about the operation and how the land is being used. This data will be invaluable to farmers, according to Dan Burdett, global head of digital agriculture at Syngenta. “The driverless tractor and automated farm equipment will be able to record any field event, which is important for developing insights, such as calculating return on investment,” he says.

“Capturing timely and accurate data to document field applications for reports and stewardship requirements will also be possible.” Because various sensors, tools and artificial intelligence will automate data collection, Burdett says the data will “enable a whole new level of decision-making capabilities. Growers will benefit from all of it,” he says, adding that the adoption of digital technologies in the ag industry is inevitable and moving fast. “It’s escalating, and that’s driven partly by farm economics,” says Burdett. “It’s very important for farmers to know their numbers. Digital tools and information technology can help farmers be better business people.”

THE FUTURE OF AUTONOMY For many years, the components needed to bring autonomous vehicles to market were cost-prohibitive for ag manufacturers. But that is changing. Uber, Google and Tesla have made big investments in technology for their self-driving cars, which has substantially lowered the cost of some components that are also used in automated farm equipment. As more industries use these components, prices will drop further, placing autonomous technology within reach of farmers. The field of automated farm equipment is fertile, and it’s growing rapidly. Have allergies and headed to college? Here’s what you need to know. BRANDPOINT MEDIA

or millions of high school seniors, the summer after graduation is a full one. There is no shortage of parties, summer cookouts or afternoons spent by the pool. There’s a lot to look forward to — and a lot to prepare for. Going to college is the first time many young adults will be away from their parents and their home. With this newfound freedom comes new responsibilities, especially for those with allergies and asthma. “For most teens, going away to college marks their first time living on their own,” says allergist Bradley Chipps, MD, president of the American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology (ACAAI). “In addition to moving to a new place, many teens must learn to manage their own schedule, diet, exercise and health. Young people may find their allergies and asthma neglected due to other, seemingly more important demands for their time.” If you or someone in your family has allergies or asthma and is headed off to college this fall, here are five tips from ACAAI on how to prepare for the transition. 1. Make time now to see your allergist. Schedule an appointment with your allergist now to discuss plans for the fall. During this visit you should ask for a referral to an allergist close to where you’re going to college, as well as a complete copy of your records, including medications, lab work and allergy test results.

3. Set up a network. It’s easy to leave things to parents, but once you move out, you’ll need to take an active role in your health. Whether you’re going 100 or 1,000 miles away, you’ll need to contact school administrators to discuss necessary arrangements for your dorm room and meals. If you’re moving far from home, along with a new allergist, identify new primary care and specialty physicians, as well as a new pharmacy.

2. Start practicing good self-management. The best line of defense against allergy and asthma attacks starts with you! Know your triggers and always be aware of risk factors when you go into a new environment. Carry your asthma medications with you in case of a flare-up.

4. Talk to the folks who’ll make your food. If you have a food allergy, plan to talk to food handlers and ask about ingredients at every meal or snack. You probably already carefully read labels, but make sure your friends, roommate and resident adviser know about

Businesses brace for a summer with record low unemployment

chool closing for the summer may mark lazy days for kids, but local businesses are bracing for peak season. With unemployment at a 17-year low, and a record 6.6 million job openings reported at the end of March, it’ll be tougher than usual to serve the seasonal boom of customers as the weather warms up. Traditionally, many hourly positions were filled by teens on summer vacation who didn’t have another way to make some spare cash. This source of trusty summer hires is down from 60 to 30 percent, which — coupled with a teeny 3.9 percent unemployment rate — means businesses that rely on heavy summer hiring should expect a smaller-than-usual batch of job seekers.
