Phantom limb syndrome is a chronic condition effecting 8 out of 10 amputees where they experience sensations, whether painful or otherwise, in a limb that does not exist
The problem occurs when the somatosensory cortex in the brain sends signals through the nervous system around the body, however, when it does not receive hap tic feedback from a missing area, it automatically responds as pain.
Mirror therapy tricks the somatosensory cortex of the brain to believe a reflected body part is on the other side, using touch senses of the true side to trick the missing, calming the pain signals it sends out
The only existing commercial option is a box mirror which is small and portable yet not always effective
