As happy couples strive to create the perfect wedding experience to mark the beginning of their lives while hosting the party of their dreams, they are discovering the breathtaking wedding locations around Delaware County. With event spaces as diverse as the table settings, there are beautiful venues from rustic barns and mountaintops, to historic mansions and even a castle. Here are just a few. As the entire country sees a great rise in craft beverage production, farm license incentives in New York State have encouraged even more players to come into the industry. Delaware County is enjoying a strong presence of craft beer, cider, wine and spirits production. With wonderful tap rooms and tasting rooms to visit for drinks and food, you can taste the flavor of the region in every pint of cider or carefully crafted cocktail made with all New York State ingredients. While the back of their facility contains their entire cider production system, churning out amazingly tasty apple-based hard ciders which are distributed worldwide, the front of the space is a cozy, comfortable and inviting tap room with ample seating, a giant bar and a variety of activities to keep you busy while enjoying one of the many Awestruck Cider varieties, a New York State beer, or their delicious selection of sandwiches, meat or cheese board. There is even an old school bus that you can sit in while enjoying your food and beverage, letting visitors know that Awestruck Ciders is not a runof-the-mill place. The tasting room is open Fridays and Saturdays from 3pm to 10pm with special events scheduled throughout the year. Best known for their award-winning Vly Creek vodka made with apples

Their Catskill Mountain Maple Spirit, distilled using Tree Juice Maple Syrup in a rum style and aged in oak barrels, is being released, and they are currently perfecting their whiskey, all in their incredible production facility and tasting room in Arkville. The tasting room is the perfect place to stop by to sample their various spirits and enjoy a cocktail while warming up next to the wood-burning fireplace or out on the newly built patio. Special events, live music and guided tours of the production facility are provided regularly, and visitors are free to purchase any of their available spirits to go. You’ve seen the stunning vistas, you’ve heard the praise, but you’re not quite sure how to dip your toe into exploring the Catskills wilderness. Maybe you dream of a fishing excursion or a thrilling hunting adventure but don’t know where to start. A licensed professional outdoor guide is the “big brother” companion you need with the skills and experience to get you the inside track on the mountains, forests, waterways, and hidden gems of the Catskills - all the things that only a professional outdoorsperson knows. Charles “Sonny” Somelofski has run Catskill Outdoor Adventures (catskilloutdooradventures.com) for 36 years. With roots in the area since childhood,
the Pepacton Reservoir was his playground. After getting degrees in forestry and education, he was helping to manage the family country store in Andes when a chance encounter with a stranger planted the seed for becoming a wilderness guide. “A man came into the store and started asking about catching trout in the reservoir. He convinced me to take him fishing, so late that night we set out on a boat with lanterns, and the fish wouldn’t stop biting. We stayed out until 5am.” Impressed with Sonny’s knowledge and skills, the man suggested he become a guide. Sonny did, earning his license, and later serving as president of the New York State Outdoor Guides Association (NYSOGA). He now has a master guide qualification and makes a living off his love of the outdoors. A typical client for Sonny is a group of men or fathers and sons, many from New

York City or New Jersey but from as far as Canada, Europe, and Japan. Most want a break from their hectic lifestyles. “Some are looking for that trophy trout - one of my clients actually caught the largest trout in the NYC water system: a whopping 22 lbs and 38” long. But if a client wants to just sit back in my boat, meditate and watch as an eagle passes overhead, I can provide the venue. I love to share folklore and stories about the mountains.” For most people, the most rewarding adventures are more than just being taken to the best spot and set up for the catch to come to you. It’s about outdoor learning a lasting appreciation for the outdoors. Respect for nature and delaware leaving a small carbon footprint are imcounty travel portant. Sonny says he often runs into guide former clients who have since built their second homes in the area and credit him for helping them fall in love with the Catskills.

Brian Foster, the owner of Reel Catskills (reelcatskills.com), spent his childhood summers on his grandparents’ dairy farm in Delaware County, often sneaking away with his cousin to fish the creeks in the West Branch Delaware River. For him, the idea of becoming an outdoor guide developed later in life out of a desire to show others what they were missing: a special place largely unaffected by pollutants, with crystal clear waters, and clean air. Observing the wildlife and taking in eagles, beavers, geese, fawns, and sometimes bears traveling the rivers and mountainsides gave him a sense of awe he wanted others to experience. At that, Brian has succeeded. He recalls bringing a woman from Manhattan to the Upper Beaverkill River and helping her catch “The Beaverkill Slam”: catching brook, brown, and rainbow trout in the same day on the same body of water. Not only that - this was the
first time she had ever been fly fishing, and she managed this all on dry flies. She had a blast and thanked Brian with tears in her eyes. The experience was so much more than she ever expected. Most of his clientele consists of, perhaps surprisingly, professional women from New York City. They drive 2 1/2 hours from the city for the all-inclusive experience - Brian provides the rods, reels, flies, even a streamside lunch. He often takes photos and video too, turning them into a keepsake for the client. “If you’re into wildlife photography, there’s no better way to get up close and personal to your subject than a drift boat trip down the West Branch Delaware.” At some point during the excursion, his clients usually end up wanting to spend a moment quietly sitting down on the riverbank, just taking in everything laid out in front of them the way nature made it. That feeling of awe? Priceless.

Ask anyone about Plattekill Mountain and certain phrases sneak into conversations. You often hear about the ski center’s easygoing, family-friendly feel and its owners who “keep it real.” Whether you’re there to snowboard in the winter, ride a mountain bike in the summer, or hang out in the 2-story lodge or outdoor patio at one of the concerts or events they host, “Plattekill just has a great vibe,” as skier Amy Beveridge of East Meredith puts it.
Annual pass holder Kim Riera of Bovina, who spends almost ever winter weekend on the mountain with her family, appreciates that she can feel comfortable letting her children ski the mountain safely on their own. “There are well-maintained trails for all levels, everything I want my children to experience. Parking is easy and everyone is friendly. It’s what keeps me coming back every year.” “I don’t know if I want to tell everyone how fantastic Plattekill is because I don’t really want to get the word out there,” admits Jill LaFever of Bovina. “It’s a great local mountain that has short or no lift lines at all, and a welcoming small-town feel. Mark Foster of Bovina appreciates that the versatile trail system offers challenges even for experienced skiers. “Plattekill has some of the best outdoor and most extreme downhill trails in the east.” An avid mountain-biker, Foster delaware visits the mountain year-round, biking county travel the trails in the summer and making a guide day of hanging out in Roxbury, a town he calls “a little gem with plenty to do.” Plattekill hosts theme days, races, and parties throughout the year, such

as the annual St. Platty’s Day and the late-winter Beach Party on the Deck, bringing food, local vendors, and live music to the mountain. They also host a free open-air summer concert series to enjoy while sitting out on a blanket or lawn chair with an option to buy dinner or take a chairlift ride. Their Columbus Day weekend event, Plattepalooza, invites the whole community to celebrate fall with great activities. With its spectacular scenery, Plattekill has become a popular mountaintop wedding destination. Guests are escorted to the top by chairlift. Visitors are offered the chance to camp on the property in their own tents or Plattekill’s freestanding glamping site. Summer and fall are the perfect time for a long leisurely ride in a car or motorcycle anywhere in our county or through our incredible scenic byways. Consider Miles of Smiles (smiles28.com), offering micro-adventures along Route 28 from Kingston to Herkimer, running right through Delaware County. From Hancock to Grand Gorge, Catskill Scenic Route 30 follows the East Branch of the Delaware River through Hancock, Colchester, Andes, Middletown and their many villages and hamlets. The Upper Delaware Scenic Byway (upperdelawarescenicbyway.org), New York State Route 97, is consistently lauded as one of the most breathtaking drives in regional and national publications. It traverses the western borders of Orange, Sullivan and Delaware Counties along a 70-mile stretch of the Delaware River with rock cut landscapes and long valley vistas along the way. Finally, The Catskill Mountain Scenic Byway (sceniccatskills.com) is 65-mile byway running along Route 28 from the Ulster County town of Olive to the Delaware County town of Andes.

If you could only visit one place in Delaware County, it should be a conveniently timed autumnal trip to Utsayantha Mountain in the town of Stamford with a piping hot personal sized pizza from Mama Maria’s in Harpersfield to watch the sun tuck itself in behind the Great Western Catskills from 3214 feet. Be careful not to miss your turn onto Mountain Avenue off Main Street, Stamford (Route 23) to begin your journey up the mountain, past the cemetery, where the road discretely changes names to Tower Mountain Road. At the crest of the outdoor road, turn left onto Tower Road where the pavement ends and turns delaware into a bumpy dirt road, barely wide county travel enough for bidirectional vehicle trafguide fic and quite the drop-off on one side, to three lookouts, each one more gorgeous than the next. If luck is with you, there is a chance to witness

hang gliders taking flight from any of the platforms. On a clear day, it is said you can see five states from the last lookout at the summit where you can find an observation building and retired fire tower. Although the building is not open to the public, the fire tower is accessible. While not for the faint of heart, the additional 80 plus foot climb gives you an entirely different and intense northwesterly view and is a must if you have the gusto. Take a seat, get comfortable and watch the intense fall foliage glow as brightly as the sky while the sun sets. The rich turquoise and yellow quickly change to shades of purple fit for a queen, and oranges that knock your socks off before finally settling down to a blood red as the golden sun sets behind the mountains. “Utsy” is a bucket list item for anyone willing to make the trip.

A journey through the Catskill Mountains on a vintage train is a fun way to take in the magnificent views of Delaware County. The Delaware & Ulster Railroad (DURR) offers scenic rides that take you on a leisurely 2-hour excursion from Arkville to Roxbury and back, passing rural hamlets, farmland and world-famous trout streams on the way, framed by panoramic views of the Catskill Mountains. Summertime brings an opportunity to enjoy the ride in an open-air car, while in colder weather, passengers are comfortably seated onboard one of the lounge or observation cars. In the fall, foliage rides are a great way to enjoy the colorful splendor over the mountains.
These historic train rides offer a nostalgic glimpse into New York’s history. In the first half of the 20th century, passenger trains would bring thousands of New Yorkers to the Catskills to vacation in summer camps and resorts. In the mid-1950’s, many railroad lines, including the section that makes up the current Delaware & Ulster line, were discontinued due to highway development and an increase in car ownership. The Delaware & Ulster railroad was later revitalized and has served as a tourist railroad since 1983. The pride of the DURR is the Rip Van Winkle Flyer, a glamorous five-car streamline train built in 1948. Today you can enjoy public excursions, charter services and special events such as light-heart-

Don’t let anyone tell you nothing comes for free! Several great events in Delaware County are free and open to the public. Here are just a few. The Music on the Mountain concert series at Plattekill Mountain in Roxbury (plattekill.com) brings live music to the resort on the first Saturday of each month from July through October. Bring your lawn chairs and blankets to enjoy open-air live concerts with an option to buy dinner specials and enjoy chairlift rides. Dogs on leashes are welcome too. Through a series of outdoorsy events – hikes, expos, films, art, workshops, and community fairs – Trout Tales invites you to fall in love with Catskills nature. One of the highlights is the Trout Tales Fish Fest & Feast at Spillian in April, a gathering that culminates in a trout-inspired happy hour and fish tale storytelling contest. In the winter, the Ice Harvest Festival (first Saturday in February each year) is arguably the region’s coolest festival, inviting visitors to enjoy ice sculpting and ice fishing, and participate in harvesting ice from the frozen mill pond with historic tools - a tradition that was once necessary to preserve food in warmer months. The same ice will be used to make ice cream at the Independence Day Celebration, another favorite local event at Hanford Mills every July 4th - you can expect tug o’ wars, sack races, and other old-fashioned summertime fun, too. In the fall, the annual Antique Engine Jamboree & Powerfest (September 8) brings antique tractors, steam engines, and various motors to the museum grounds for a day of storytelling, hands-on kids’ activities, BBQ, and bluegrass music. Then, see the axes fly at the Woodsmen’s Festival (October 13) where various lumberjack skills are demonstrated, alongside presentations, local vendors, food, music, and kids’ activities.
The 15th annual Cauliflower Festival (cauliflowerfestival.com, September 9) in Margaretville, NY, celebrates farming, cooking and culture in the past, present and future of the Catskills with rides, a petting zoo, traditional music, vendors, crafts and cauliflower for sale. Though the region no longer produces a lot of cauliflower, it was once a cash crop that supplemented the income of many dairy farmers. On the artsier side of things, the 23rd annual Stagecoach Run Art Festival (stagecoachrun.com, July 7-8) allows the opportunity to tour the homes and studios of the dozens of professional artists who live and work in Delaware County. Meet the artists and bring home a unique piece of art! The Hobart Book Village (hobartbookvillage.com), an eclectic collection of bookshops in the charming village of Hobart, NY, puts together the annual Festival of Women Writers (September 6-8), a 3-day celebration of women writers with readings, workshops, panel discussions, and a reading of a dramatic work. Fleischmanns Memorial Day Street Fair, May 28 in Fleischmanns, is an annual street fair celebration featuring good, crafts, vendors and live music. The Dairy Fest, June 9-10 in Meredith (meredithdairyfest.com), celebrates all things dairy with animals and livestock, vendors, concessioners, vintage baseball, and fun for kids.
