Great Lakes Theater

he mission of Great Lakes Theater, through its main stage productions and its education programs, is to bring the pleasure, power and relevance of classic theater to the widest possible audience.

Since the company’s inception in 1962, programming has been rooted in Shakespeare, but Great Lakes commitment to great plays spans the breadth of all cultures, forms of theater and time periods –– including the 20th century –– and provides for the occasional mounting of new works that complement the classical repertoire.

n behalf of our artists, staff and Board of Trustees, welcome to Great Lakes Theater’s 51st season! Our mission, “to bring the pleasure, power and relevance of classic theater to the widest possible audience,” guides our mainstage productions as well as our educational programming, in the belief that theater holds the capacity to illuminate truth and enduring values, celebrate and challenge human nature and actions, and provide our student audiences a glimpse of a broader world and the wellspring of learning made possible through the arts.

We are thrilled to be back in the Hanna Theatre this spring as our season continues in the new year with Nöel Coward’s otherworldly comedy, Blithe Spirit; Shakespeare’s battle of wits and wooing, Much Ado About Nothing; and our season finale (one of the largest productions Great Lakes Theater has undertaken in years), Guys and Dolls, Frank Loesser’s Tony Award winning musical. It is a joy to work, once again, with Art Falco and Gina Vernaci and the great team at PlayhouseSquare to offer Guys and Dolls as part of the Key Bank Broadway Series.

Throughout the spring season, you will see many familiar names and faces from our astonishing core company of artists, educators and technicians joined by artists making their Great Lakes debut. Of particular note are two directors joining us this spring: We are delighted to welcome Sharon Ott (directing Much Ado About Nothing) and Cleveland native Dan Knechtges (director and choreographer of Guys and Dolls) to the Great Lakes family. Sharon is a director of international renown in theater and opera. During her 13 years as Artistic Director of Berkeley Repertory Theater, Sharon built a reputation as one of the leading artists in American theater, and the company won the 1997 Tony Award for best Regional Theatre. Following her tenure at Berkeley Rep, Sharon became the Artistic Director of Seattle Repertory Theater, where she produced and directed both classics and world premieres. Dan is a Tony Award nominated choreographer and director who also happens to be a graduate of Otterbein College.

His Broadway credits include The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, Sondheim on Sondheim (also seen on our stage last spring), Lysistrata Jones, and Xanadu. In 2007, Dan enjoyed the extraordinary experience of having three shows running simultaneously on the Great White Way. But we could not produce our work without the tireless efforts of our talented administrative staff, dedicated board of trustees and the tremendous generosity of this community! As you look around the theater you will see the names of many friends, partners, corporations and foundations whose support makes all of this possible. We extend our deepest gratitude to each and every one of them and look forward to a future filled with ever more collaboration and creativity.

She has played the Nurse in Romeo and Juliet and Paulina in The Winter’s Tale with Idaho Shakespeare Festival and GLT. Laurie is a 35-year veteran of regional theaters across the United States. She was a resident company member with Milwaukee Repertory Theatre, and played many roles over the 17 years she spent there. Some favorites include Josie Hogan in A Moon for the Misbegotten, Penny Sycamore in You Can’t Take It With You and Claire in A Delicate Balance, to name only a few. Other regional credits include Asolo Theatre, Virginia Stage Company, Alabama Shakespeare Festival, Connecticut Repertory, Meadowbrook Theatre, NY Shakespeare Exchange and the Tony-Award-winning Utah Shakespeare Festival. She is currently based in Chicago, where some favorites include Maureen Buckley in My Kind of Town (TimeLine Theatre); Puck in A Midsummer Night’s Dream (Chicago Shakespeare Theatre); Pattie in Season’s Greetings (Northlight Theatre), where she received the Jack Springer Award; and Mrs. Grigson in Shadow of a Gunman (Seanachai Theatre). Eric Damon Smith* Charles, Blithe Spirit Great Lakes Theater debut A Chicago based actor and director, Eric happily makes his Great Lakes Theatre debut. Recently, Eric was seen as Bud in Gutenberg! The Musical at Milwaukee Repertory Theatre, Bassanio (The Merchant of Venice) and Oliver (As You Like It) at Riverside Theatre in the Park in Iowa City. Charles holds a unique position in the American theater as producing artistic director of three independently operated, professional theater companies: Great Lakes Theater in Cleveland, Ohio (since 2002), Idaho Shakespeare Festival in Boise, Idaho (since 1991) and Lake Tahoe Shakespeare Festival in Lake Tahoe, Nevada (since 2010). His appointments have resulted in a dynamic and groundbreaking producing model for the companies, in which 45 plays have been shared since 2002.

In 2009, Charles was honored to receive recognition for his leadership by the Cleveland Arts Prize as a recipient of the Martha Joseph Award. Other awards include The Mayor’s and

Governor’s awards for Excellence in the Arts, in Boise, Idaho. From 1988 to 1992, he held the position of artistic director at the Sierra Repertory Theatre in California. He has also worked with The Old Globe, La Jolla Playhouse, the Milwaukee and Missouri repertory theaters, Actor’s Theatre of Phoenix and the Los Angeles Shakespeare Festival.

In addition to his work with the companies in Ohio, Idaho and Nevada, Charles is active within the community. He has served as a member of the strategic planning committee for the Morrison Center, as producer of the FUNDSY Award Gala (’96, ’98 and 2000), and as producer of the 1996 Idaho Governor’s Awards in the Arts. Charles has served on the board of the Boise Metro Chamber of Commerce and as a member of the Downtown Rotary Club. He received his B.A. from the University of the Pacific and Master of Fine Arts from the University of California, San Diego.

Along with his wife, Lidia, and 17-year-old daughter, Alexa, Charles resides in Boise, Cleveland and Lake Tahoe –– a feat that is only possible because of the incredible love and support of his family, and the generous communities he serves!

DESIGNERS Richard B. Ingraham Sound Designer, Blithe Spirit Two seasons at Great Lakes Theater Richard has designed sound for numerous theaters in the area and around the country. Previously at Great Lakes, Richard has designed sound for Sondheim on Sondheim and many of the outreach tours. Other recent sound designs include Follies for Baldwin Wallace University; Annie, Xanadu, Spring Awakening and Velocity of Autumn for the Beck Center; Avenue Q for Cain Park; Iphigenia 2.0 for Cleveland Public Theatre; A Bright New Boise and Middletown for Dobama Theatre; Songs for a New World and Pride and Prejudice for Hope Summer Repertory Theatre in Holland, Michigan; and Strike Slip for Oberlin College. Past designs include Othello, The Seagull, The Crucible, Love’s Labor’s Lost, Measure for Measure, The Taming of the Shrew, Julius Caesar, The Importance of Being Earnest, Much Ado About Nothing and Tartuffe.

She is a frequent designer for the Idaho Shakespeare Festival, as well as The Juilliard School, where she designs both theater and opera.

Her work has also been seen at Delaware Theatre Company, TACT, Playmakers Repertory Company, Hartford Stage Company, Guthrie Theatre, Intiman Theatre, George Street Playhouse, Coconut Grove Playhouse, Walnut Street Theatre, The Acting Company, Indiana Repertory Theater and Portland Stage Company.

This program offers a talk-back with the student playwrights and a panel of distinguished professional Cleveland theater artists.
