EL DOWN TH TRAV E GARDEN PATH

Variety is the spice of life and at Secrest Arboretum — it makes for both a plant lover’s paradise and a vital source of research for The Ohio State University’s College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences. The 110-acre educational botanical garden features more than 3,500 types of trees, flowers and plants in both garden and woodland environments — and it’s free and open for the public. Stop and smell the roses … and dahlias, peonies, fresh herbs, lilies and more at Hummingbird Hill Flower Farm (pictured). The picturesque farm boasts 6 acres of blooms in a kaleidoscope of colors. Pick your own bouquet and attend the annual sunset dinner, a sunset yoga class or a nature program for youngsters. You may not expect a lush and fragrant field of lavender in the middle of an industrial park, but Lavender Trails isn’t your ordinary farm. Planted on reclaimed industrial land and using no pesticides, the photogenic field features 11 types of sweetsmelling lavender in pink, white and classic purple. Pick-your-own season starts in July. Cut bundles to take home or pick up scented soaps and sachets.

FARM TO TABLE For more than 25 years, the Downtown Wooster Farmers’ Market has turned the county seat’s historic downtown area into a local foodie paradise every Saturday from mid-May to mid-October. Score the freshest pickings from local farms selling everything from meat and dairy products to mushrooms to fresh flowers. Since 1929, Bauman Orchards has been a go-to stop for fresh fruits in the Rittman community. Boasting more than 70,000 apple trees, plus peaches, plums, pears and sweet corn, it’s a pick-your-own peck mecca. Moreland Fruit Farm’s pick-your-own crop also follows the seasons and offers berries, peaches, apples, grapes, pumpkins and more, depending on the time of year. Take a horse-drawn wagon ride or make farmyard friends at the petting zoo. Pick up fresh fruits and veggies at the on-site market. Family fun is in season every fall at Ramseyer Farms (pictured), which is open every September and October with a cornucopia of wheelchair-accessible activities and play spaces. Wind your way through a challenging corn maze, pick your own pumpkins, enjoy an old-fashioned hayride and take a wild ride down a corn-crib chute. The Country Store is chock-full of gifts and a smorgasbord of food options, including food trucks with ice cream.

FARM LIFE Did you know that Ohio’s agriculture, horticulture and forestry industries contribute a whopping $100 billion to the state’s economy every year? See how Wayne County transformed from a vast wilderness to a vital farming stronghold at the Buckeye Agricultural Museum and Education Center. Historic artifacts, photos and stories trace the agricultural history of the area and showcase locally hewn innovations that made farming faster and more efficient. For 175 years, the best from the area’s cultivators has been on display at the Wayne County Fair, held every September. Check out prize-winning livestock, arts and crafts and the annual truck pull.

N THE SPIRIT GET I

RAMSEYER FARMS, MINGLEWOOD DISTILLERY: LAURA WATILO BLAKE, LINCOLN WAY VINEYARDS: STEPHANIE MAURIC

Wayne County is home to several wineries, a brewery and a distillery. Pay a visit and sample some sips from field to table. The history of Doylestown and the surrounding area is reflected in the names of Silver Run Vineyard & Winery’s reds, whites, fruits and blushes. Try the awardwinning Rogues Hollow Red and Western Reserve Cabernet Franc.

“Find Your Wine Time®” is the motto at Lincoln Way Vineyards (above left) and their time-themed wine line offers a red, white and rosé. Look for food trucks and live music on weekends year round. The historic ice house that Minglewood Distilling Company (above right) calls home used to headquarter an ice and coal delivery service. Now, the spirit-makers use local grain to craft seven types of whiskeys, including flavors like apple, cinnamon and peach.

Admire the lush vineyards at Troutman Vineyards and Winery, which produces more than a dozen wines including their best-selling Farmer’s Red from grapes grown in their vineyards and other local sources. Sample several varieties in the tasting room, once a chicken house that’s been expanded. Bent Ladder Cider & Wine comes with a spectacular view of the surrounding valley. Take in the tranquil landscape while enjoying one of their French-American hybrid reds and whites or a hand-crafted hard cider made from apples grown on-site. Blue Barn Winery & Vineyard, housed in a stunning 19th-century structure that sparked the winery’s name, makes a range of wines and beers including the unique berry/citrusflavored Rumspringa Ale, inspired by the local Amish culture. Live music events on weekends and festivals bring a lively spirit to the historic homestead. Get a taste of hops and wheat at JAFB Wooster Brewery. Choose from 16 varieties on tap that change throughout the year. Can’t miss options include the hoppy JAF IPA. Sip in the taproom or the patio.

BRING THE TASTE HOME Leave room in the car to take some of the fresh flavors of Wayne County home. The family-owned and -operated East Union Bulk Food Store & Deli in Orrville has been a local favorite since 1983. Fill your cart with freshfrom-the-field local produce, canned jellies, deli meats and cheeses, house-made baked goodies and, of course, everything from cereals to spices to sweets sold in bulk. After more than 60 years, the Marshallville Packing Company is still serving customers the old-fashioned way: by hand-cutting meats, most originating from Wayne County farms. Don’t miss the company’s award-winning smoked ham, bacon and jerky. With a specially curated stock of gourmet offerings, The Oak Cupboard in Smithville is an ideal stop for foodies. Pick up homespun pastas, succulent jams and popcorn in whimsical flavors.

Come Find Your Wine Time® with us! Boasting an array of 100% Ohio grown wine types, ranging from dry to sweet and everything in between. You can also enjoy our hard ciders. Olde Jaol Steakhouse and Tavern

The family-run Mariola Italian is already a community favorite in Wooster. It’s hard to beat a night on the patio with a glass of wine and pizza with dough that’s scratch-made. It should be no surprise that fresh breads, gooey cinnamon rolls and housemade pizza feature heavily on the menu at Broken Rocks Café & Bakery in Wooster. While you savor lunch on the deck at The Granary Restaurant at Pine Tree Barn in Wooster, take in views of Killbuck Valley and the Christmas tree farm. You won’t be disappointed by any of the donuts or cookies at family-owned Michael’s Bakery in Orrville. Don’t miss the locals’ favorite, the yummy maplefrosted creme stix. Olde Jaol Steakhouse and Tavern in Wooster makes its home in an 1860s jailhouse. Nowadays you can savor steaks in former jail cells or giant burgers in the tavern. Come hungry to Salt Creek Café, Bakery + Creamery in Fredericksburg, where you’ll find everything from baked goods crafted daily to luscious scoops of Yoder’s Southern Creamery Ice Cream. The Barn Restaurant in Smithville is perfectly named. Located in a beautifully restored dairy barn, it’s popular with locals for its take on soup and salad. Pick from 30 toppings at the Salad Wagon, then choose from five options at the soup bar, before stopping at the bread table. Comfort food is the name of the game at Des Dutch Essenhaus in Shreve. Savor tender roast beef or broasted chicken and save room for a slice of homemade pie or warm apple crisp. Look for the vintage neon sign at the Dalton Dari-ette. A beloved local drive-in since 1957, it serves burgers, hot dogs, fresh-cut fries, sundaes and shakes. Motor on over to the Guerne Heights Drive-In in Wooster for soft serve ice cream, fresh all-beef burgers and coney dogs made the same way for over 60 years.
