From stands of hickory, oak and pine trees dotting the landscape to lakes filled with catfish, crappie, bass and bluegills, nature’s majesty abounds in Vinton County. More than 80 percent of the county is wooded and there are only 13,000 residents — an ideal place to get away from it all to enjoy nature.

It’s also a year-round haven for bird-watchers who enjoy keeping their eyes peeled for more than three dozen varieties. Winter brings visits by pileated woodpeckers, eastern phoebes and ruby-crowned kinglets, as well as rare sightings of hermit thrushes. As the weather clears in spring, pine warblers and Louisiana waterthrush make an appearance. Summer is the ideal climate for forest birds to return to the Buckeye State, and regulars include the blue-winged warbler and yellowbreasted chat, as well as the elusive blue grosbeak. As autumn leaves start to fall, the migrating songbirds and other perching birds add beauty and color to the forests as they soar. “If you love the outdoors, Vinton County is one of the best destinations to visit because we’re surrounded by so much forest,” says Lori Grupenhof, assistant manager

of Lake Hope and Lake Alma state parks. “There’s something for everyone here.” One of the first state parks in Ohio, Lake Hope State Park, which dates back to 1937, offers a secluded respite from modern life. Encompassing 2,983 acres, it’s a prime spot for fishing, hiking and mountain biking amid steep gorges and narrow ridges that are picturesque reminders of the iron ore and coal production in days gone by. The park’s 120-acre lake is a peaceful spot to enjoy the surroundings. “Only electric motorized boats are permitted on the lake,” says Grupenhof. “We have a concession at the marina that rents battery-operated pontoons, stand-up paddleboards, kayaks and hydrobikes. There’s also a beach for swimming.”

Where to Stay & Eat Whether you want to rough it or find a luxury cabin with modern amenities, Vinton County has the ideal overnight stay just for you. But visitors who want all the comforts of home and then some should look no further than the Laurel Lodge at Lake Hope State Park. Accommodating up to 24 guests, the amenities include eight bedrooms, five bathrooms, a main living area with TV, a stone wood-burning fireplace inside and a patio charcoal grill and fire pit outside. All linens and cooking equipment is provided. It’s easy to taste why Lake Hope Lodge has become a premier casual dining spot in Southeast Ohio. The menu includes a palette of entrees for everyone, including smoked meats, steaks, burgers, sandwiches and pizza. Be sure to save room for three-berry cobbler or a slice of New York-style cheesecake.

EXPLORE BEAUTY ALONG THE MOONVILLE RAIL TRAIL AND THE BRIDLE TRAILS OF ZALESKI STATE FOREST

Each of us plays a crucial part in preserving and protecting our forests and parks. Here are a few tips to ensure your safety and make your visit enjoyable for everyone for years to come.

PLAN AHEAD & PREPARE • Know the regulations of the area you’re planning on visiting. • Prepare for unexpected weather conditions, hazards and emergencies. • Repackage food to minimize waste. • Use a map and compass or GPS to eliminate the use of marking paint, rock cairns or flagging.

TRAVEL & CAMP ON DURABLE SURFACES • In popular areas, stick to existing trails and campsites, walk single file in the middle of the trail, keep campsites small and set up your site in areas with little vegetation. • In pristine areas, disperse use to prevent the creation of new campsites and trails.

DISPOSE OF WASTE PROPERLY • Do not leave toilet paper and hygiene products at the campsite. • Carry water 200 feet away from streams or lakes for bathing and dishwashing.

LEAVE WHAT YOU FIND • Photograph, but do not touch, cultural or historic structures. • Leave rocks, plants and other natural objects as you found them. • Do not build structures or dig trenches.

4

VINTON COUNTY 2022/2023

MINIMIZE CAMPFIRE IMPACT • Use a lightweight stove and opt for candlelight after the sun goes down. • Keep fires small, and use dead wood that can be broken by hand. • Burn all wood and coals to ash, put out campfire completely and scatter cool ashes.

RESPECT WILDLIFE • Observe wildlife from a distance and do not approach them. • Never feed animals because it can damage their health and expose them to predators. • Control your pet at all times.

BE CONSIDERATE OF OTHERS • Yield to other trail users. • Take breaks and camp away from trails. • Enjoy the sounds of nature by talking quietly.

MOONVILLE RAIL TRAIL: KEVIN KOPANSKI

Lake Hope is located within the 27,822-acre Zaleski State Forest, Ohio’s second largest state forest. Popular pursuits include hunting and, a safe distance away, traversing the 28 miles of backpack trails leading to destinations that include an Adena ceremonial mound and the historic Moonville Tunnel that’s said to be haunted. Horseback riding is one of the best ways to enjoy the pristine beauty along 30 miles of equestrian trails, and the Zaleski State Forest Horse Camp provides drinking water for you and a pond for your equine companion, along with a map of the six primitive bridle trails winding through hills and valleys of hardwood and coniferous trees. A large population of wild turkeys can be found in Vinton County, and the intimate, 292-acre Lake Alma State Park is an ideal spot to keep an eye out for them and other species. The quiet park, with its 60-acre lake, is also a popular place to swim and fish. In addition to having the distinction of being home to the state’s largest known population of bobcats and timber rattlesnakes, the Vinton Furnace State Experimental Forest comprises one of the most biologically diverse ecosystems in the United States. Research is also being conducted there on how best to restore oak trees in Ohio forests. Remnants of an iron furnace and Belgian coke ovens can be found along the forest’s secluded trails.

MOONVILLE TUNNEL: LAURA WATILO BLAKE, KEVIN KOPANSKI

Tunnel Vision 8

Y L FIND HISTORY, ADVENTURE AND PERHAPS A GHOST OR TWO ALONG THE MOONVILLE RAIL TRAIL. BY RICH WARREN

You won’t find Moonville, Ohio, on the map — the little mining town has been completely abandoned for nearly a century — but one historic (and spooky) landmark of the hamlet remains, along with plenty of legends and ghost stories. The Moonville Tunnel was built in the mid-1850s as part of an expansion project by the Marietta & Cincinnati Railroad. The tiny town of Moonville had a population of less than 100 but included a depot and was a pick-up stop for coal and lumber hauls. The heavily forested and ruggedly hilly area was tricky to navigate, and the desolate stretch of railroad saw more than its fair share of accidents. People frequently walked or rode horses along the tracks, and with no signals along the route, trains would speed out of the darkness faster than many poor souls could get out of the way. By the 1940s, Moonville was essentially abandoned. Trains continued to run into the 1980s. The haunting remnants of the Moonville Tunnel continues to provide the perfect backdrop for scary tales. Some say they've heard the haunting laughter of a young girl, and others have claimed to see specters of the victims of a tragic smallpox outbreak in 1895. One legend has it that in 1859 a railroad brakeman fell asleep on the job and tumbled beneath the wheels of a moving train. Some have claimed to see the man’s ghost wandering down the tracks, his lantern still aglow. In recent years, new life has been breathed into the tunnel and the abandoned railroad route. The Moonville Rail Trail Association is transforming the former train line into a muscle-powered trail for the public to enjoy. With the help of donations and grant money, the association has installed 11 new bridges along the route, cleaned and improved the path, and established a preservation plan. In 2021, the Moonville Tunnel was even added to the National Register of Historic Places.

EXPLORE THE TUNNEL TODAY The Moonville Rail Trail currently runs about 10 miles between Mineral and Zaleski, and meanders through scenic Zaleski State Forest and Lake Hope State Park. (It's a work in progress with eight new bridges installed in 2021). In addition to the Moonville Tunnel, the trail also passes through the timber-lined King Hollow Tunnel, which is carved through rock. Whether you’re interested

in outdoor recreation, visiting historic sites or curious about the paranormal, there’s a way to explore the tunnel — day or night. The trail is free and accessible year-round to hikers, bicyclists and equestrians. Bird watchers, wildlife spotters and fall color fanatics will especially enjoy the route. Horse lovers can book a guided tour on horseback with Uncle Buck's Riding Stable & Dance Barn. Occasional tours of Moonville

Tunnel are also offered as programs through Lake Hope State Park. Want to experience the tunnel at its most spooky? The Vinton County Convention and Visitors Bureau has also established an annual festival to celebrate the tunnel’s supernatural reputation. Midnight at Moonville, held on the second Saturday in October, features wagon rides, storytellers and creepy characters, live music and a paranormal investigation.

I

BY RICH WARREN

Imagine standing on a hilltop with a vista of vineyards, meadows and forest stretching out in all directions with a lovely round pond at the foot of the hill. Two friendly border collies have run to greet you from a 19th century farmhouse, and would be perfectly willing to frolic at your side should you choose to amble through the vineyards. Welcome to Le Petit Chevalier Vineyards and Farm Winery, Vinton County’s first winery. In French, Le Petit Chevalier means “The Little Knight,” but Chevalier also happens to be the family name of owners Mark and Margit, who opened the winery in 2020 after a long period of selling the grapes on their six acres of vineyards to other wineries. Now that they’ve mastered the art of winemaking themselves, they can serve guests in a rustic tasting room adjacent to their farmhouse home. More often, however, the guests prefer to sit on an outside deck or at nearby picnic tables to take in that magnificent hilltop view. The Chevaliers focus on growing native American grapes like Catawba and Norton or cold-hardy French-American hybrids such as Seyval Blanc and Chambourcin that can withstand Ohio’s winters. They also grow newer varietals like Marquette and Itasca and are currently producing a line of fruit wines made from apples, blackberries and strawberries. Soon to join their suite of wines is one made from native Alexander grapes — the Chevaliers are the only farmers in the Midwest growing them — and in 2023, wines made from Maréchal Foch grapes, a French-American hybrid, will come on line. Mark is proud that all wines he produces with his wife Margit are 100 percent estate-grown and come from their own vineyards. “So if you find a wine you really love, you can go out and hug the vines that produced it,” he says. Stay even longer in this lovely setting by renting the spacious Winery Loft above the tasting room, where up to four guests can overnight in the roomy quarters that have a complete kitchen and private balconies. Nearing completion is a two-bedroom Vineyard Cottage overlooking the pond that can accommodate four to six people. Visitors electing to stay overnight can enjoy that idyllic view even longer!

Since it’s housed in a building dating back to 1902, owners Steve and Melissa Hammond pride themselves on providing a trip back in time, right down to the original maple floor and tin ceiling. In addition to stocking primarily Ohio-sourced tools, camping equipment and pool supplies, the shop is a magical emporium featuring handcrafted gifts, including hand-painted birdbaths from Burley Clay Pottery in nearby Roseville; and locally made balms and bath bombs. The old-fashioned candy counter is full of nostalgic favorites, and the vintage 1964 Coca-Cola cooler is filled with the iconic soft drink in glass bottles. “It’s always fun to hand the kids a Coke, say ‘Here you go,’ and watch them master how to use an old-fashioned bottle,” Steve says.

JOHN HUNT MORGAN HERITAGE TRAIL During the Civil War, Confederate soldiers — led by Brigadier General John Hunt Morgan — marauded their way through 557 miles of Ohio trying to distract and divert Union troops from battlefields in Tennessee. The John Hunt Morgan Heritage Trail follows the entire route now known as Morgan’s Raid. You’ll find interpretive signage at various locations in Vinton County, including in the town of Wilkesville, where Morgan spent the night with his cousins at the Cline Mansion, a privately owned home that still stands today. After clashing with Union troops at Buffington Island — Ohio’s only Civil War battlefield — Morgan and his men traveled through Vinton County before being forced to surrender in northeastern Ohio near the border with Pennsylvania.

COVERED BRIDGE TOUR More than 60 covered bridges once crossed Vinton County’s scenic streams and rivers, but only four still stand as a testament to a bygone era when horse-and-buggy traffic was the predominant form of overland transportation. The Arbaugh Bridge, built in 1871, may be the oldest, but it’s the only one preserved for motorized traffic. The others — Mount Olive, Bay and Cox — are a picture-perfect backdrop for a day touring the rural byways or stopping for a picnic. Hocking Hills Scenic Air Tours

Everything is up in the air for pilot Harry Sowers, who takes passengers on sightseeing tours in his single-engine, four-seat plane based at the Vinton County Airport. “You know it when you fly,” his motto states, “you see it better from the sky.” Within minutes of take-off, you’ll have a whole new perspective on the geology of southeastern Ohio. The highlight is soaring over a stunning tapestry of dense trees punctuated by the rocky outcroppings and waterfalls of the Hocking Hills.

When you’re ready to leave the crowds behind, the rural backroads of Vinton County make for an exciting joyride on two or four wheels. Motorcycle enthusiast Sarah Guthrie turned her many jaunts through the region into a series of self-guided driving routes collectively known as The Serpent’s Bones. Together, they take the form of Kinepeikwa, a serpent from Shawnee mythology. Its body stretches through the region from the Hocking Hills to the Ohio River, but its heart can be found at the scenic Lake Hope State Park, and from there, you can follow a variety of meandering roads that twist and turn around the rock sandstone outcroppings that punctuate the landscape. GHOST TOWNS AND HISTORIC SITES Several once-thriving, 19th-century mining communities have long since disappeared from Vinton County, but remnants of these ghost towns remain. The most infamous of them all is Moonville. You may spot a few foundations and a cemetery, but the Moonville Tunnel is the biggest draw. The dark, brooding train tunnel is reputed to be haunted. The 10-mile Moonville Rail Trail starts in Zaleski, passes east through the tunnel and heads to Ingham Station, a long-abandoned company town that left behind a few foundations, mine shaft entrances and a few other remnants. More historic sites include the remnants of the Oreton train depot on State Route 160, the Hope Furnace at Lake Hope State Park, and the furnace and Belgian coke ovens at Vinton Furnace State Forest.

QUILT BARNS In 2001, Donna Sue Groves set out to honor her mother’s memory by painting a quilt block on the side of her tobacco barn in Adams County. The concept soon spread throughout the state and beyond. Today, there are 1,000 quilt barns in Ohio. Be on the lookout for 27 of these unique murals as you cruise backroads and byways on the driving tour called A Stitch in Time: The Quilt Barns of Vinton County. While many are located on private property, you can linger longer at Hope Schoolhouse Welcome Center near Lake Hope State Park for a closer look at Shortcut to School.
