give back to the hills
One of the most rewarding ways to enjoy your time in Hocking Hills is by taking an active part in protecting its precious natural resources and strengthening the local community rooted here. Whether it’s participating in a clean-up program, supporting community-minded local businesses or pledging to be a responsible visitor through the Love Hocking Hills program, there are many opportunities that can help you leave Ohio’s most picturesque region better than when you arrived.

Find fulfillment through volunteer opportunities that include trail cleanup programs at Hocking Hills State Park, planting flowers in downtown Logan and helping scientists track the regional monarch butterfly migration. These kinds of activities that give back to nature can make a vacation more meaningful, connect visitors with the local community and foster new skills and experiences. “Volunteering in the Hocking Hills is essential because it contributes to the area’s long-term sustainability,” explains Cindy Coss, Stewardship Coordinator at the Hocking Hills Tourism Association. She says participants always leave satisfied with the experience and walk away knowing more about the area’s history and natural beauty — and the occasional coupon! Community Engagement Another way to support the region during your visit is through Hocking Hills Gives Back. When you support this network of local businesses, your dollars go further. Participating businesses donate portions of profits to charity, host food drives and provide free lodging and meals to families aided by Ronald McDonald House and the Dream Foundation. “Hocking Hills Gives Back began as a family mission to give 5% of every booking to charity,” says Debbie Todd, co-owner of The Woodlands at Hocking Hills and founder of Hocking Hills Gives Back. The initiative has since grown into a collective effort to support local non-profits, connect property owners and guests with meaningful give-back opportunities and, most recently, expand through Give Back Hospitality in partnership with the Global Hospitality Collective to inspire impact all over the world. For starters, guests to The Woodlands can leave non-perishable food items to donate and make fleece blankets for children in foster care. Further opportunities include serving meals at the Southeast Ohio Food Bank and participating in trail clean-up days. “Hocking Hills Gives Back is about more than just tourism,” says Todd. “It’s about coming together as a community and using the resources and gifts we’ve been given to make a real difference. This program fosters connection between businesses, guests and locals, working together to create a greater collective impact.”

If your time is precious, another way to give back is by pledging to be a responsible visitor. Help protect the region’s natural resources and be a part of the solution by staying on trail, taking only photos, picking up after your dog, throwing away trash and more.

This route may seem remote, but traffic can be heavy near popular sites. Follow safe driving rules, avoid stopping on the road or on private property and park safely and legally to explore.
Hocking State Forest connects much of the region’s explorable park areas while offering camping, hiking and rock-climbing within its almost 10,000 acres. Old Man’s Cave, Ash Cave and Cedar Falls might be popular trail destinations, but lower-density spots like Cantwell Cliffs, Rock House and Conkles Hollow can provide adventure and views with smaller crowds. While most caves are recess caves, Rock House offers a true cave experience with seven “windows” overlooking the park. Cantwell Cliffs provides a chance to trek down into its valley and marvel at the sheer rock cliffs from below. Similarly, Conkles Hollow has an accessible trail meandering into its heart. Thrill seekers can hike the rim trail looking down into the park. (Conkles Hollow is a state nature preserve, so pups will have to stay home).
Historical Gems The area’s unique rock formations likely contribute to its long human history. Early European settlers found campfire remnants and indigenous artifacts in the aptly named Ash Cave. Mound Crossing, located about 12 miles into the journey, represents one of many ancient Hopewell Mounds found throughout the state. The mound is on private property behind a blue farmhouse and is best viewed from the road. Two other sites mark more recent history: the Hocking Honor Camp held prisoners from 1950 through 1974 who were not a flight risk — the men helping to maintain the surrounding forest and trails. The Hocking State Forest Headquarters were built in the 1930s as part of the New Deal’s Civilian Conservation Corps during the Great Depression. Participants of the program built the trails, bridges, tunnels and infrastructure seen around the region today.
More To Do Cultural sites invite deeper exploration along the byway. The owners of Butterfly Ridge transformed 21 acres of hardwood forest into a haven for caterpillars, butterflies and moths. Hike their paths or join programs to learn about conservation efforts. Newer to the area is the John Glenn Astronomy Park. This dark park designed for full night sky viewing runs regular programming (weather permitting). Parking is limited, so reserve in advance. Guests can bring their own telescopes or binoculars.

Details When Don Holycross retired in 2010, he celebrated by purchasing his first digital camera. That was the start of his business, Hocking Hills Photography. VINTAGE EN VOGUE, DON HOLYCROSS: BETH FLICK, TABLE TOP ROCK: DON HOLYCROSS
At Vintage en Vogue, a boutique and clothing shop on Main Street, local painter Dave Shull greets customers with a hearty hello. His painting studio is framed by the store’s large picture window. His wife Susan Shull, and a stroke he had seven years ago, inspired him to finally pick up a paint brush. “I watched a lot of Bob Ross,” laughs Dave. The scenic Hills and his memories of growing up in Sugar Grove inspire the acrylic paintings in the storefront gallery. The rest of the space in this former bowling alley is Susan’s domain. “I like mixing old with new,” she says, “and I love the boho look.” Clothing and accessories are artfully arranged into outfits with vintage household items, LPs and decor. A children’s section includes vintage toys and trendy clothing. “My favorite is vintage Christmas,” says Susan, gesturing at the antique ornaments dangling from a wire tree, a bit of nostalgic holiday cheer present all year.
Heading out from his home some 15 minutes from Ash Cave, Don sees beauty from all angles. Using long and short exposure techniques, the hues and textures of Rock House cave are revealed, waterfall movement slows down and vivid sunsets ripple
across the sky like velvet. As Don says, “We can’t see every detail with our own eyes, but the camera does.” To view and purchase Don’s work in person, stop in Home Grown on Main, a downtown art gallery featuring local authors, artists, craftspeople and photographers.

Brewing Up
Jo Eaves at The Ridge Inn Restaurant
Community
A short drive from downtown Logan, Brewery33 Hocking Hills is a trip to the candy store for beer, wine, cider, mead and seltzer lovers — all made in house. Back in 2017, Logan native David Kornmiller decided to up his home beer and wine-making hobby by going pro, opening the brewery off State Route 33. “It was a labor of love with great determination,” says Amy Stahl, David’s partner. Friends and family pitched in to create the comfortable tap room with blonde wood, corrugated steel wainscoting and a striking copper bar top. Behind the bar, a bank of taps pours libation delights. David and Amy have infused flavors from their travels into some brews — a trip to New Mexico inspired Hulls Hatch Chili and Lime Ale. In thanks to their community, proceeds from Responder Red IPA are donated to the fire department, while those from Tenacious Double IPA benefit the ALS Foundation. Pair your drink with creative takes on pub food like deviled eggs in bold, rotating flavors and Amy’s Simple Sandwiches.
Downtown Laurelville Named for the mountain laurel that dots the surrounding hills, Laurelville’s country charm is captured in the local business flavor. Fan out from the tiny traffic circle for locally sourced food favorites and insider tips at must-see scenic spots. Seasons are celebrated with hay bales, pumpkins, Christmas lights, American flags and an over-a-century-old apple farm and cider house. People who settle here quickly feel at home in Laurelville, as do visitors who become welcome guests.

When Jo Eaves traded rural New Jersey for rural Ohio, she envisioned a place to welcome and feed people. She designed The Ridge Inn Restaurant to do just that. The restaurant’s petfriendly porch and robust flower
garden that peeks through the railing entices people to linger. Inside, local art, country kitchen furnishings and a buildyour-own-pen station create an ambiance of home. “We want to embrace our guests and make them feel like company,” Jo says. Slice
of Goodness Four years ago, Doug and Tiffany May bought Laurelville Pizza and re-located, stepping
away from their Columbus jobs to slow down. Slowing down hasn’t happened, but the move paid off. “We finally have the freedom to be with family and do what we Iike,” says Doug, now an expert at hand-crafting pizza. Locally sourced meats and produce from Amish and Mennonite farmers paired with Doug’s homemade sauce using fresh tomatoes and spices tweaked to perfection are a powerful flavor combo. Crust with just the right amount of crunch brings customers back again and again. Tiffany helps
make sub sandwiches and bakes cookies and sweets in-house, adding to the irresistible aroma inside the shop. “This is like our home,” says Tiffany. “We want to make it enjoyable for people.” Humorous wall signs mixed with Ohio State Buckeye love help guests feel comfortable and relaxed, while the shop’s “Feed the Beast” tagline and Sasquatch logo are a playful nod to the many bigfoot sightings in Hocking Hills. EVENING | Pack a blanket to bring to John Glenn Astronomy Park. Kids will be amazed looking through the telescopes and learning about constellations under Ohio’s dark skies.
Family-Friendly Explorations MORNING | Take a short but adventurous hike inside Rock House, Ohio’s only true cave. Kids love climbing through the “windows” carved in the rock. LATE MORNING | Book a private family nature trek, rock-climbing or even survival skills session via Travel Far Adventure Hard. Experienced guides make it engaging and educational for all ages. LUNCH | Known for the friendly service and famous melt-in-your-mouth yeast donuts, The Ridge Inn Restaurant in Laurelville makes a nice spot to refuel. AFTERNOON | Challenge the family to a round of miniature golf surrounded by a fun, nostalgic atmosphere at Putt Putt at Rempel’s Grove, a long-time Hocking Hills favorite. EVENING | End your trip with a picnic and paddleboat rental at Lake Logan State Park. Gentle water fun makes for a calm wind-down before heading home.

Leave No Trace The 7 Principles 1. Plan ahead and prepare. Check the weather forecast and research the supplies you’ll need. Familiarize yourself with the land and be prepared to leave no trace of your visit. 2. Travel and camp on durable surfaces. Stay on the trail — this is for your protection and nature’s. 3. Dispose of waste properly. Would you leave your garbage on a friend’s yard? Of course not, so don’t litter in your old friend nature’s yard.

4. Leave what you find. Would you help yourself to your friend’s possessions? Of course not, so leave the stones, trees, plants and artifacts there for the next visitor to appreciate. Don’t carve your initials into trees or stack stones, instead preserve the memory with a picture. 5. Minimize campfire impacts. There’s no need for bonfires; keep it small and easily manageable. Buy your wood where you burn it or consider using a small camp stove. 6. Respect wildlife. Let’s face it, no one wants to be the guy in the viral video getting chased by a bear. Leave wildlife alone. 7. Be considerate of other visitors. You may love falling asleep to Van Halen blasting from your iPhone, but families and solo travelers may not. Behave as you would in any sacred space and be kind to others enjoying the outdoors. E xplo re H o c kin gH i l l s .com 4 3
