WHERE WILL YOU EXPLORE THIS SUMMER?

The thought of visiting our nation’s great outdoor spaces often turns immediately to the West, a part of the country that has captured our imagination for generations. Yes, the red rocks and soaring mountains are truly special, but there are also incredible experiences waiting for you on this half of the continent as well — all less than a day’s drive away.

The expanse of Kentucky’s Cave Run Lake on the cover of this issue only begins to illustrate the travel opportunities that exist throughout the nine states and the province of Ontario that make up our coverage area.

You can hike the highest point in West Virginia (p. 67) or head deep below the surface of New York State (p. 24), sample the fruits of Michigan’s Traverse Wine Coast (p. 43) or stand in the room in Memphis where Elvis Presley recorded “That’s All Right,” the song that launched him to stardom (p. 52).

Whether you want to hike, boat, head out on horseback, step back in time or just relax, there are options available for you. The fun of assembling each issue of LongWeekends is curating a mix of experiences that we love and think you will, too. Now, it’s your turn. Where will this summer take you?

great ohio Road Trips

This month, we partner with Ohio Amish Country to share why spring is the perfect time to visit for plants, shopping, food and more.

The rolling landscape of Ohio Amish Country is dotted with barns, farmhouses and fields that reflect a way of life focused on hard work, family and the land. In every season, the region draws travelers with its mix of charming shops, markets, restaurants and places to stay, but the arrival of spring provides a particularly inviting time to explore.

10

Country Greenhouses

It isn’t springtime in Ohio until you have a little dirt on your hands, and there is no better place to embrace the growing season than a region steeped in agricultural tradition. Ohio Amish Country is home to a plethora of greenhouses that offer a wide mix of plants and shopping experiences.

Yoder’s Greenhouse & Nursery in Apple Creek is a great stop for those looking for flowers, ornamental grasses or fruit trees such as honey crisp or gala apples. The sprawling spot is also just a fun place to explore, with amusing touches such as outdoor shopping aisles with names like Rose Lane and Azalea Street, and a large wooden bridge that passes over the driveway welcoming customers.

The 20,000-square-foot Olive Branch

Home & Garden in Millersburg stocks perennials, annuals, hanging baskets and vegetable plants. Even those doing small container plantings can benefit from the guidance of the knowledgeable staff. While you’re there, don’t miss Modern Farmhouse, a connected store that sells wares that complement Olive & Branch. The funky and vibrant boutique is full of clothing, home goods and vintage vibes.

These are just a couple of the wellstocked greenhouses found here — places where an afternoon of browsing captures your imagination of what is possible in your own yard. Many greenhouses are found down country roads that require a brief excursion from the heart of the region’s busiest areas. These tuckedaway spots are well worth the trip for the expertise available that has been developed over generations of gardening. Find a map of several of these locations at visitamishcountry.com/blog/ringing-spring

Great Stays

The Inn at Honey Run in Millersburg sits on 56 acres and is surrounded by woods that give the place a wonderfully secluded feel. Guests have the option to stay at the inn itself or in one of the rooms uniquely built into a hillside on the property. Both options feature Wi-Fi, flat-screen TVs and other convenient and modern touches.

The inn itself has indoor common areas with wood-burning fireplaces, and 3 miles of walking trails wind throughout the grounds. Be sure to check out the Holmes County Open Air Art Museum, a 1.5-mile trail that features nearly a dozen nature-inspired outdoor works of art, such as a totem carved out of a 55-foot-tall tree and a life-sized cuckoo clock composed of mostly found organic materials. Once you’ve worked up an appetite, Tarragon at the Inn at Honey Run offers a white-tablecloth dining experience with a small-butmighty seasonal menu that features elegantly presented entrees such as ribeye steaks, chicken and pork chops.

Tiny Stays Berlin offers a trio of cozy, centrally located accommodations that have a small footprint. The Lux, the most well-appointed of the three, features a full bathroom and kitchen, hardwood flooring, a 92-inch television and mood-setting accent lighting. A 32-foot-long deck lets guests soak in the outdoors. The Scandi features 12-foot ceilings and large windows, including one above the lofted sleeping space. If you’re exploring Ohio Amish Country as a family, Apt 359 provides a two-bedroom apartment that can accommodate up to six people. For more information, visit innathoneyrun.com or tinystaysberlin.com.

Beautiful Blooms

Gina Morbitzer and her husband, Joe, moved from Columbus to the village of Shreve in 2020 to open the 6-acre Hummingbird Hill Flower Farm. The avid gardeners now welcome guests for workshops, private events like weddings and bridal showers and casual visits to stop and smell the roses (of which there are approximately 80 varieties).

If you’re as wild about flowers as the Morbitzers, head to the farm in the spring as roughly 5,000 bulbs, from daffodils of all colors and fragrance to fancy tulips and grape hyacinths, start to bloom. In May and June, catch peonies, poppies, bachelor buttons, lavender, snapdragons, larkspur, liatris, herbs and a variety of early blooming perennials.

Workshops include Sunset Yoga, an experience that includes picking a bouquet of flowers out of the field, taking a yoga class and then sticking around to enjoy the sunset. The eco-printing workshop lets visitors pick flowers and stems out of the field and then use a dye-transfer process to imprint them onto silk or cotton to create a scarf, table runner or other textile items. From the top of the farm’s namesake hill, visitors can take in miles of Ohio Amish Country, and Adirondack chairs are set up around the farm. Plus, there’s always the chance you’ll see a hummingbird flitting by. Be sure to visit the farm’s Flower Bar Market where you can buy gardening decor, gifts and fresh-cut flowers. hummingbirdhillflowerfarm.com

Modern Market

Sheiyah Market ’s large red barn stands out like a beacon along state Route 39 in the heart of Berlin, but the 50,000-square-feet of shopping spans multiple spaces and experiences. Start your visit at Buggy Brew Coffee Co. , which serves up cups of joe from locally roasted Red Mug Coffee Co., pastries and more in an inviting cafe space with tables and games for the kids.

From there, explore Country Gatherings, an expansive, multiroom store filled with a vast selection of artfully assembled home decor and lifestyle wares in styles ranging from vintage inspired to modern farmhouse. From beehiveshaped candles to a framed painting of Abraham Lincoln to charming dining room table centerpieces, the wide and interesting selection offers a welcoming spot to lose yourself for a while.

Next door, shoppers can step inside The Gardens, a greenhouse packed with a selection of plants, gardening tools, fountains, bird baths and more to beautify your backyard. Kids and the young at heart alike can explore the variety of fairy-garden accessories that range from miniature winged figurines to mushroom houses. If you need some magical inspiration, a courtyard seating area presents a charming display of assembled fairy gardens.

Then, head outside and past the life-size model of a horse and buggy to The Village Gift Barn, which offers three more levels of shopping. Visitors will find smaller home decor items and furniture, but the primary draw is the main floor’s Sheiyah Style Boutique, which offers all one needs to assemble a great outfit, from boots and sneakers to shawls and sweaters. 4755 St. Rte. 39, Berlin, Ohio 44610, 330/893-2648, sheiyahmarket.com

Trail Adventures

Ohio Amish Country is all about taking it slow. So, instead of traveling from town to town in the family SUV, leave gas-powered transportation behind for the day and explore the area on two wheels by way of a path created by the Holmes County Rails-to-Trails Coalition

The multi-use, two-part trail — one 15-mile-long section connects Fredericksburg and Killbuck, while an 8-mile portion links Glenmont and Brinkhaven — accommodates bicyclists, hikers, horseback riders and buggies. A planned 8-mile section between Killbuck and Glenmont that is scheduled to be completed within the next couple of years will create a continuous, 31-mile pathway through the county.

Although you can bring your own bike to park and ride at several spots, such as trailheads in Fredericksburg off Clay Street, Holmesville off state Route 83, Hipp Station/Millersburg Depot in Millersburg or Glenmont off County Road 25, you can also rent traditional or electric bikes. E-Bikes of Holmes County in Holmesville offers four types of bicycles or e-bikes and will deliver them to lodging locations throughout Holmes County for a fee.

Once you’ve got your wheels beneath you, don’t miss the natural wonders along the way, including part of Lower Killbuck Creek Wildlife Area, where you can take in wetlands, wooded areas and rock outcroppings as well as spot wildlife such as mallard ducks, Canada geese and maybe even a bald eagle or trumpeter swan. Go to visitamishcountry.com to learn more about the Holmes County Rails-to-Trails Coalition.

Local Flavors

Ohio Amish Country is well known for hearty, country-style fare, but those time-honored dishes are only part of the story when it comes to this region’s food-and-drink offerings.

Founded in 1980 by winemaker Duke Bixler, Breitenbach Wine Cellars in Dover feels like a little slice of Europe, thanks to its brightly colored buildings with pitched roofs that give the feel of a German village. Set on 200 acres — 20 of which are vineyard — Breitenbach is known for crafting fruit wines such as apricot, cherry or peach as well as its bestselling Roadhouse Red, a semisweet and smooth wine. The winery’s sweet dandelion dessert wine is made from dandelion blossoms picked by a local Amish family, and it’s only available at the winery’s retail shop. The dandelions also serve as inspiration for the annual Dandelion Festival (May 5 and 6 this year), but stop by throughout the spring for wine tastings and food such as wood-fired pizzas and salads.

Open since 2022, The Cider Press restaurant in downtown Millersburg features farm-to-table fare. Chef CaSondra Edwards’ seasonal dishes make this eatery a must-visit spot for foodies. Although the menu changes weekly, past offerings have included dishes like mushroom risotto, brisket, Tuscan-style chicken and fried pickles. Ciders available include those crafted by Bent Ladder in Doylestown and Baltic Mill Winery in Baltic. With exposed brick walls and industrial-style lighting, The Cider Press is a great spot for a date night or a meal with friends. While you’re in downtown Millersburg, be sure to visit the area’s antique shops, boutiques and more. To learn more, visit breitenbachwine.com or ciderpressmbg.com.

Local Legend 1 drink

PRIMANTI BROS. • PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA

Pittsburgh’s most famous sandwich shop can be found in the bustling Strip District, a spot marked by blue neon letters that spell out a name that has been known in the Steel City since 1933: Primanti Bros. Founder Joe Primanti’s practice of stuffing a whole meal between two slices of Italian bread became a hit with visiting truck drivers because they could take the sandwich on the road. The legend grew from there. Although Primanti Bros. now has 38 locations across Pennsylvania and beyond, folks still flock to the Strip District — the street where Primanti’s original sandwich cart sat — to choose from the lineup of “Almost Famous Sandwiches” piled high with meat, melted provolone cheese, tomatoes, coleslaw and freshly cut french fries. With a roll of paper towels for napkins and plastic utensils at each table, this is casual, comfort-food fare at its best. 46 18th St., Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania 15222, 412/263-2142, primantibros.com — Gracie Wilson

Memorable Meal

SKYLON TOWER’S REVOLVING DINING ROOM NIAGARA FALLS, ONTARIO

Skylon Tower’s restaurant perched high above Niagara Falls would be impressive enough with its views of North America’s famous natural feature. Add the fact that every diner gets the opportunity to enjoy the best seat in the house during their visit, and booking a reservation becomes even more compelling.

Niagara Falls’ iconic observation tower rises 520 feet from ground level, but the distance between the top of the structure and the water of Niagara Falls Gorge is 775 feet, creating spectacular vistas that have made the landmark a legend since it opened in 1965. Diners can catch sight of the Maid of the Mist or Niagara City Cruises excursion lines crossing the falls’ basin like toy boats in a bathtub. Across the way, visitors to Cave of the Winds at the bottom of Bridal Veil Falls look like tiny ants traversing the attraction’s wooden boardwalks.

These memorable sights are available to every diner because, as its name implies, the Revolving Dining Room makes a 360-degree rotation every 60 minutes. Tables are next to the enormous glass windows, providing plenty of photo opportunities. Diners are treated to spectacular views as soon as they are seated, and the room slowly rotates as it frames Horseshoe Falls, American Falls and Bridal Veil Falls, Ontario’s Niagara Region and — on clear days — a glimpse of the Toronto skyline. The falls are illuminated with color each evening, making a trip to the top of Skylon Tower after the sun goes down distinctly different than a visit during daylight hours.

Reservations for lunch or dinner are a must, and the restaurant is accessible via separate elevators from those who are visiting the observation deck only. (All dinner reservations include free access to the observation deck that sits above the restaurant.)

The view is the main course, but the menu offers a lineup of continental cuisine that spans entrees like filet mignon, salmon, roast chicken breast and rack of lamb, as well as a vegetarian and a vegan option. 5200 Robinson St., Niagara Falls, Ontario L2G 2A3, 905/3562651, skylon.com

Back to the Farm

JOSEPH DECUIS ROANOKE, INDIANA

Boston, Massachusetts, to Roanoke, Indiana, might seem like an odd move for a former New York Yankees front office employee turned successful insurance entrepreneur and an actress who studied theater at Denison University. For Alice and Pete Eshelman though, it was exactly the lifestyle they wanted.

Ensconced in the small town of Roanoke — about 10 miles from Fort Wayne, Indiana — the Eshelmans turned an old bank building into Joseph Decuis, a destination farm-to-table restaurant. The bank vault is now a wine cellar stocked with bottles that appear on the restaurant’s awardwinning wine list, and its larders are filled with Wagyu beef raised on the couple’s farm.

If you want further proof of the Eshelmans’ dedication, consider this: On one of Alice’s major milestone birthdays, her husband gifted her with 20 pregnant Wagyu heifers. Their herd now numbers in the dozens. Joseph Decuis — named after an 18th-century ancestor of Pete and the inspiration for the restaurant’s New Orleans-style courtyard and garden — follows the Japanese method of raising Wagyu beef.

Diners looking for something a bit more casual can opt for lunch at the Joseph Decuis Emporium Cafe next door. The Emporium is also the place to purchase take-out meals from the restaurant, Wagyu beef, eggs and wine.

For overnight stays, check into the Inn at Joseph Decuis on Main Street. Built in 1913, it is just a short walk from the restaurant. There is also the Joseph Decuis Farmstead Inn across the road from the Eshelmans’ farm. The brick home was built in 1884 and owned by the same family for generations. Now a lush and luxurious place to stay, the old farmstead includes outbuildings, a large rambling barn that is home to numerous resident cats and even a decorative windmill. (restaurant) 191 N. Wildlife Wonder

ROSAMOND GIFFORD ZOO • SYRACUSE, NEW YORK

From fish and monkeys to alpacas and birds, the animal kingdom is well represented at the 43-acre Rosamond Gifford Zoo, located at Syracuse, New York’s Burnet Park, but the star residents are the twin Asian Elephants born here in October 2022. Animal-encounter opportunities offer visitors the chance to learn about sloths, penguins and hawks. When it’s time for lunch, stop off at the HoneyBee Cafe, with options like chicken strips and pizza that can satisfy even the pickiest little eaters. Summer 2023 at the zoo brings a Penguin Palooza! ice cream party in July and the Asian Elephant Extravaganza in August, which shines a light on the native cultures of the zoo’s herd of eight elephants. When you visit, take the kids out into Burnet Park, which has a swimming pool, playground and walking trail. 1 Conservation Place, Syracuse, New York 13204, 315/435-8511, rosamondgiffordzoo.org

High Flyers

The largest free outdoor show of its kind in the United States, the Chicago Air and Water Show is one of the city’s most highly anticipated summer happenings. The multiday event brings more than 2 million spectators to the shores of Lake Michigan to see pilots from across the country perform astonishing aerobatic maneuvers in the skies above.

The first Chicago Air and Water Show, held in the summer of 1959, featured a Coast Guard Air Sea Rescue demonstration, a diving competition and even a water ballet performance. Today, the show features not only top-notch pilots but also parachute jumpers and water skiers. Among the highlights are appearances by the U.S. Army Golden Knights, the U.S. Navy Blue Angels and the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds. (This year’s event is set for Aug. 19 and 20 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., with practice flyovers on Aug. 18.)

The prime viewing location for the Chicago Air and Water Show is directly along Lake Michigan. Bring beach chairs or a blanket and stake out a spot at North Avenue Beach from Fullerton Avenue to Oak Street, Ohio Street Beach or along Navy Pier.

Those looking to watch the show from the comfort of a sand-covered patio dotted with private cabanas should reserve a spot at the Shore Club on North Avenue Beach. Or, grab a seat at Castaway’s — North Avenue Beach’s blue-and-white boathouse, bar and grill, where cool drinks and live music are always on the menu.

Many of the city’s tour-boat companies offer special cruises — some with lunch buffets and live music — during the Chicago Air and Water Show. Shoreline Sightseeing, Seadog Cruises and Chicago’s First Lady Cruises are a few of the lines that routinely offer excursions during the show. For more information about this event, visit chicago.gov and search for “Chicago Air and Water Show.” — AMY

Race Through History

runs a variety of tours inside the legendary venue, providing tour takers behind-the-scenes access to parts of the property they couldn’t normally see.

The popular Barn and Backside Tour explores the expanse of 47 barns that hold up to 1,400 horses, some of which can be spotted going to and from the track, getting baths or relaxing in their stalls. Should you take the early-morning version of this tour, you may have a chance to spot horses training on the famous racetrack. For a more extended watch, sign up for the Thoroughbred Workout Tour, where guides focus on the intricacies of training a racehorse.

The Superstars and Spires tour provides special access to Millionaire’s Row, private dining rooms and balconies where notable figures watch the Derby. During the Bourbon and Bridles Experience, enjoy a bourbon tasting and learn how to make a mint julep with the racetrack as your backdrop. To see the horses in their element, travel off-site for the Hermitage Farm and Museum Tour. For about two weeks before the Kentucky Derby each year, a tour presented in partnership with Hermitage Farm offers sights of horses that will be participating in the Derby.

As May arrives each year, excitement stirs among horse-racing fans for the annual running of the Kentucky Derby, but you can visit the race’s iconic home of Churchill Downs in Louisville throughout the year. The on-site Kentucky Derby Museum

Northern Thrills

CANADA’S WONDERLAND VAUGHN, ONTARIO

Less than an hour’s drive north of Toronto sits the largest amusement park in Canada. Featuring the third-largest collection of roller coasters in the world, Canada’s Wonderland delivers big thrills, but it also hosts a full lineup of summer events around which families can plan their travels north.

From the wonderful flavors of Brew & BBQ to the Irish dancers and hearty shepherd’s pie of Taste of Ireland, the park’s summer sea son offers an impressive lineup of multiday festivals and events. The multiweek Celebration Canada — the largest Canada Day event in the Greater Toronto Area — arrives in July, offering lots of live music, lumberjack demonstrations and plenty of poutine (the iconic Canadian dish of french fries topped with cheese curds and gravy).

When it comes to thrills, the 300-acre park boasts Leviathan, the tallest and fastest roller coaster in Canada. The ride plunges from a 93-meter (306-foot) peak and reaches speeds of up to 148 kilometers per hour (92 miles per hour). There’s also Yukon Striker, which holds records for being the world’s fastest, longest and tallest dive coaster. Riders hang over a 90-degree drop for three seconds, before reach ing speeds of up to 130 kilometers per hour and traveling through a 360-degree loop.

Those looking for something a little tamer will enjoy Wilde Beast, which features a figure-eight, out-and-back design and reaches speeds of 90 kilometers per hour. It is one of three wooden roller coasters and one of four that have been here since the park opened in 1981.

When it’s time to cool off, Canada’s Wonderland is also home to the 20-acre Splash Works Waterpark, which features 17 waterslides and is included with park admission. Opens May 5; 1 Canada’s Wonderland Dr., Vaughan, Ontario L6A 1S6, canadaswonderland.com

Living History

Spanning more than 1,000 acres, Conner Prairie transports visitors to the 19th century, when fur trader William Conner settled along the White River. Today, Conner’s brick home still stands and is open for tours as part of this living-history museum that spans 14 indoor and outdoor exhibit areas that focus on learning and share the story of this part of Indiana.

Start your visit in the Welcome Center, where the Spark! Lab provides rotating activities with an emphasis on teaching innovation to children through hands-on learning. The Welcome Center also includes the Discovery Station, which features materials to make art, build forts, put on a puppet show and more.

Outside, the 1836 Prairietown invites travelers to step back in time with an interactive glimpse of what daily life was once like here. Costumed interpreters in period-appropriate garb make the experience all the richer. Kids and adults alike can complete tasks and activities given by the “pioneers” they encounter along the way. Visitors can also learn about the

first residents of the land, the Lenape Indians, in an area that re-creates 1816. Play games, learn about the culture and gather goods from a trading post.

The 1859 Balloon Voyage celebrates a historic event that occurred in Lafayette, Indiana, that year, when balloon designer and pilot John Wise made the first successful airmail delivery in the U.S. For an additional charge, visitors can take a trip 377 feet into the air via the tethered balloon and enjoy incredible views.

On land, hit the trail for a glimpse of flora and fauna native to the prairie on Nature Walk, a jaunt that spans just over a mile and is home to deer, birds and squirrels. Stop by the Treetop Outpost to pick up resources for the expedition.

Along with the 200-year celebration of the Conner Home, summer 2023 brings “Promised Land as Proving Ground,” experiences woven throughout Conner Prairie that explore African American history. 13400 Allisonville Rd., Fishers, Indiana 46038, 317/776-6000, connerprairie.org — LAUREN PATTERSON

Explore Together

Discovered in 1842, Howe Caverns lies 156 feet below the surface of New York’s Schoharie County, about 38 miles west of Albany, and holds the distinction of being the second-most-visited natural attraction in the state, just behind the roaring flow of Niagara Falls.

During the attraction’s early days of welcoming visitors during the 19th century, tours lasted eight to 10 hours, most of which was spent descending into the cave. Now, it’s a matter of a 38-second elevator ride to get below the Earth’s surface.

Carved by an underground river in a process that researchers believe began 6 million years ago, the caverns feature an assortment of fascinating rock formations, such as stalagmites, stalactites and flowstone.

Howe Caverns’ Traditional Tour consists of a 1.25-mile walk, quarter-mile boat ride and 139 steps, and because caves are naturally cooler yearround, a jacket is recommended.

The tour progresses through 300 feet of narrow canyons and down the stairs to Titan’s Temple, the largest room in the cave. Even this deep below the surface, there is a multitude of colors. The Bronze Room has hues of sulfur yellow, iron rust, the green of waterborne copper and milky white from pure calcite.

On Friday and Saturday evenings, a two-hour lantern tour allows travelers to see Howe Caverns the way its founder Lester Howe first did. A twohour Family Flashlight Tour on Sunday nights offers a similar experience to the Lantern Tour, but is geared to explorers 5 and older. (An overnight stay at the Howe Caverns Motel can also be reserved while booking a tour.)

The more adventurous can opt for the Signature Rock Discovery Tour that lasts three hours and visits seldom-seen portions of the cave. Private tours are also available for those who want to explore the cave at their own pace. 255 Discovery Dr., Howes Cave, New York 12092, 518/296-8900, howecaverns.com

Rush of History

For over a century, people have made the trek to Niagara Falls’ various lookouts to see the gushing natural wonder spanning two countries, but the Tunnel at the Niagara Parks Power Station allows visitors to experience the nearly 190-foot waterfalls from a different vantage point. The attraction, which opened in 2022, offers a glimpse into the past, while bringing renewed life to the once-dormant station.

The Niagara Parks Power Station opened in 1905, following four years of construction. Its 2,200-foot-long tunnel once served as an exit point for water used to generate hydropower and was excavated using rudimentary dynamite, shovels, lanterns and pickaxes.

Adaptive reuse construction for the power station’s revival as a tourist attraction began in 2020 with the goal of delivering a modern guest experience, while also preserving the heritage and story of the facility. Today, visitors can walk the power station’s tunnel to a viewing platform along the lower Niagara River that

provides breathtaking views of the Horseshoe and American falls.

The journey begins in the power station’s generator hall, a large atrium that houses 11 of the original generators the power plant used to create electricity in the early 20th century. From there, visitors enter a glass-enclosed elevator and slowly make the 180-foot descent to The Tunnel, while getting glimpses of the facility’s impressive infrastructure. Guided tour options are available in the main level, but The Tunnel is a self-guided experience only.

For after-dark visitors, “Currents: Niagara’s Power Transformed,” a sight-and-sound night show, offers an immersive experience that spans millennia. Presented in the atrium, it features a combination of floor and wall projection mapping that shares the story of Niagara Falls, from the Ice Age to present day. 7005 Niagara River Pkwy., Niagara Falls, Ontario L2E 6T2, niagaraparks.com/power

Hot Dog Heaven

WEST VIRGINIA HOT DOG FESTIVAL HUNTINGTON, WEST VIRGINIA

12

This city along the banks of the Ohio River is home to nearly a dozen hot dog emporiums — some with multiple locations — that make the summer food staple their primary business.

This local frenzy for frankfurters dates to 1932, when Stewart’s Original Hot Dogs opened. Now in its fourth generation of family ownership, Stewart’s is joined by many other establishments, including Frostop, which is simple to spot with its giant mug of root beer on the roof. Hillbilly Hot Dogs is also easy to find along the roadside, thanks to the huge jumble of junkyard treasures surrounding it — both rustic and rusty. Guy Fieri’s Food Network series “Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives” featured the eatery’s famous Homewrecker, a 15-inch, all-beef hot dog.

Although many of the offerings in town might seem remarkably similar, locals swear they could be blindfolded and still know which ones were made where because of the various chili sauces served atop them — many with closely guarded secret ingredients. Other topping choices include onions, bacon, barbecue sauce and even nacho cheese or sour cream as well as a distinctive local favorite: sweet-andcreamy coleslaw.

Huntington celebrates its hot dog heritage during the West Virginia Hot Dog Festival the last Saturday in July. The full day of entertainment, music and contests includes the Wiener Dog Race, a crowd favorite in which dozens of dachshunds dash for the finish line. Other events include a Pooch Parade, a dog costume contest, a Buns on Bikes race, a cruise-in and the popular hot dog-eating and root beer-chugging contests. The 2023 West Virginia Hot Dog Festival is July 29. Visit wvhotdogfestival.com to learn more. For more information about hot dog spots in Huntington, go to visithuntingtonwv.org.

Each morning at 11 a.m., a parade of five mallard ducks marches through the lobby. The birds spend the day swimming in the hotel’s Italianate fountain, before marching out of the lobby each day at 5 p.m.

As you might imagine, the procession draws crowds of people who gather to take in the treasured tradition. But how exactly did these pampered ducks end up living a life of luxury at Memphis’ most storied hotel?

In the 1930s, hotel manager Frank Schutt returned from a weekend hunting trip in Arkansas with his buddies and thought it would be fun to let his live English call ducks (ones used to attract other ducks while hunting) swim for a spell in the hotel’s elaborate fountain. The guests loved seeing the ducks splash and play, and ever since, five mallard ducks have lived on The Peabody’s rooftop.

The hotel’s official Duckmaster escorts the birds from their elaborate abode — known as the Royal Duck Palace — to the lobby via elevator and marches them across a plush red carpet to the marble fountain. The rollicking “King Cotton March” by John Philip Sousa plays while the ducks make their entrance.

Kids are invited to sit at the edge of the red carpet, and it’s a good idea to arrive about 30 minutes early to grab a spot. The Peabody even offers a Ducky Day getaway package that includes the title of Honorary Duckmaster, which allows a guest to assist the official Duckmaster in marching the birds to and from the fountain. 149 Union Ave., Memphis, Tennessee 38103, 901/529-4000, peabodymemphis.com

Beach Joys

East Harbor State Park hugs northwest Ohio’s scenic lakeshore and affords visitors a host of outdoor recreation options. The beach here boasts fine natural sand that is ideal for running, sunning and sculpting. It’s also located along a stretch of Lake Erie known for calm waters and promises an enjoyable experience for even the youngest visitors.

The park’s 2.5 miles of shoreline has a 1,500-foot designated bathing beach protected by four stone breakwaters that shelter the area from rough waves, and the gentle slope of its sand floor lets the entire family wade right in.

Boaters at East Harbor State Park like to drop anchor in the shallow water and swim off their vessels, while a full-service marina caters to fishermen angling for Lake Erie walleye. The park offers access points — including two at the beach — for paddlers to head out and explore, providing opportunities for families with older kids who are looking for some on-the-water adventure.

Located in the heart of East Harbor State Park, Middle Harbor is home to a 350-acre game sanctuary known as a great spot for bird-watching thanks to plentiful waterfowl and shorebirds, such as ducks, geese, egrets and heron. Other wildlife spotted within the park includes white-tailed deer, red foxes and bald eagles.

The East Harbor State Park Nature Center features interactive wildlife exhibits that make learning fun. (One activity uses weights to illustrate the strength of an eagle’s talons.) The Nature Center complex includes a camp store for the convenience of travelers staying at the park’s family campgrounds. (With 586 sites, it’s the largest in the Ohio State Park system.) It’s also just a short drive or bicycle ride away from the beach. Plus, families who don’t want to bring their own bikes can rent them from the camp store. 1169 N. Shores & Islands Ohio is more than just a place... it’s a feeling. It’s the excitement felt from the first time you visit, to becoming a seasoned regular, or a part of the community. It’s a sense of belonging, it’s home. Find your Lake Erie Love at SHORESandISLANDS.com.

No matter where your Major League Baseball fandom falls, don’t miss out on a trip to Wrigley Field. The legendary ballpark on Chicago’s North Side is the historic home of the Cubs and a destination unto itself. The venerable field was built in 1914 as the home for the Chicago Whales, who later became the Cubs due to the team’s young players.

Known for its ivy-covered outfield wall, Wrigley Field is the second oldest baseball park in the Majors (behind the Boston Red Sox’s Fenway Park) and has a history as storied as the team that calls it home. Getting to the park on game day can seem overwhelming, but thanks to Chicago’s renowned L train gliding above the city streets, the journey on the Red Line makes it simple. Those who make the trip by car can park at Wrigley Field’s remote lot and take the shuttle.

Root for the home team and take home something to remember the trip by planning your visit around one of the great promotional giveaways. This season, the Cubs are featuring a bobblehead series of five Cubs heroes whose statues stand at Wrigley Field. (These bobbleheads will be given to the first 10,000 earlyarriving fans on designated days.)

Whether it’s a game day or not, take one of the many tours that share the history of the ballpark and allow you to stand on the field of the 2016 World Series champions. Rain or shine, there are a variety of 75-to-90-minute tours that include a look at the dugout, press box, field and more. Traverse City, Michigan, might be known for cherries, but what the region does with grapes also leads travelers to chart a course for the Lake Michigan shore. While the larger Leelanau Peninsula is home to 18 wineries, the nearby Old Mission Peninsula offers a more relaxed vibe.

Set across this sleepy, 17-mile-long strip of land stands eight wineries, including Mari Vineyards, which has views of Grand Traverse Bay. The 73-acre vineyard offers wines made with estate-grown grapes such as Praefectus (a Bordeaux-style red) or the bright and zesty pinot bianco. The Tuscan-style winery offers a perfect spot to take in the bay’s bright blue water, and the locally made lemon lavender shortbread cookies complement the wines.

Farther north, Bowers Harbor Vineyards provides a cozier, down-toearth option for wine lovers. While Bowers Harbor offers dozens of wines by the glass, opt for the flights that come with four to five varieties based around a theme such as sweet, red or cider. Try the sparkling Brix, which offers watermelon and cantaloupe notes. No matter what wine you go with, pick up a tub of locally made white fish pate for a true taste of Michigan.

Keep the northerly trek going by heading to Mission Point Lighthouse at the top of the peninsula. The lighthouse, built in 1870, features artifacts and

exhibits covering Great Lakes maritime history. For an extra $5, travelers can climb up into the tower for an elevated look at the lake.

The Boathouse Restaurant’s indoor patio offers views of a small marina and Marion Island in the distance. The French-inspired menu features dishes such as rack of elk, Lake Michigan walleye and a seafood tower loaded with oysters, shrimp, salmon and more — the perfect way to wrap up an afternoon of wine exploration. GREAT LAKES SHIPWRECK MUSEUM PARADISE, MICHIGAN

Nestled on Whitefish Point, along the northwestern shore of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, the Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum houses a treasure trove of history. The museum’s main gallery is filled with ship artifacts and historic photography depicting 13 vessels lost on lakes Superior, Huron and Michigan. The most famous of these is the wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald. The bell of the ill-fated ship, which sank on Lake Superior with a crew of 29 aboard on November 10, 1975, has been on display here since its recovery in 1995. The self-guided museum tour lasts about 45 minutes, but there is more to see outside.

Whitefish Point Lighthouse still serves as an active beacon. Travelers can take a tour of the keeper’s quarters and learn about Captain Robert Carlson, who once lived in the light station. 18335 N. Whitefish Point Rd., Paradise, Michigan 49768, 888/4923747, shipwreckmuseum.com

ENCOUNTER EXPERIENCE EXPLORE

Home Tour

Making its debut in 2021, the Great Wright Road Trip outlines a route through western New York and into Pennsylvania that explores nearly a dozen architectural masterpieces designed by Frank Lloyd Wright.

Start the journey in Buffalo, which has one of the largest clusters of Wright structures in the United States. The Martin House includes rows of art glass windows, original furnishings, a wisteria glass mosaic on the fireplace and a 100-foot pergola framing a reproduction of the “Winged Victory” statue in the Louvre.

The Martin family also commissioned Wright to design their summer home, Graycliff, which looks out over Lake Erie and offers dramatic views of downtown Buffalo in the distance through its long banks of windows.

Other Wright-designed structures in Buffalo include the Fontana Boathouse, the Blue Sky Mausoleum inside Forest Lawn cemetery and a filling station with a gleaming copper roof, observation deck and fireplaces that

is now located inside the city’s Pierce-Arrow Museum of vintage cars.

Next, head south to Pennsylvania’s Laurel Highlands to see one of Wright’s most recognized structures, Fallingwater, a home cantilevered atop a waterfall. Tour the house or take a guided tour of the grounds. Nearby, Kentuck Knob is a smaller Wright home nestled into a hillside setting with sweeping views of the surrounding mountains and a sculpture garden that includes two pieces of the Berlin Wall.

About 45 minutes away in Acme, Polymath Park is a cluster of four homes, two of which Wright designed himself. One of them, Mäntylä, features a dramatic jutting roofline like the prow of a ship. You can rent these homes for the night or tour them during the day. Visitors can also opt to combine their tour with a meal in one of seven treehouses. For more information about following this route, go to visitbuffaloniagara.com/wright-road-trip.

Whiskey History

When distiller Jasper Newton Daniel decided to establish a whiskey distillery near a cave spring in the small town of Lynchburg, Tennessee, in 1866, he could never have anticipated that his Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Whiskey would become one of the most recognizable brands in the world of spirits. Today, Jack Daniel Distillery welcomes more than 300,000 people each year to see the whiskey-making process firsthand.

Every tour begins at the distillery visitor center, where travelers are greeted by a statue of Jack Daniel himself, as well as historic memorabilia and a timeline showcasing the evolution of the iconic square Jack Daniel’s bottle and “Old No. 7” brand. Three different distillery tours are available to ensure a memorable experience, whether one is a whiskey novice or connoisseur.

The Flight of Jack tour is an excellent place to start for first-time distillery visitors. This 90-minute guided tour shows the whiskey-making process, including Jack Daniel’s renowned charcoal mellowing process. This tour also includes stops at the original Cave Spring Hollow, where every drop of Jack Daniel’s whiskey begins as cool spring water, as well as the original office of Jack Daniel. The tour concludes with a whiskey sampling in the George Green Barrel House. Other options include The Angel’s Share tour, which features a guided tour of the distillery and a sampling of whiskies taken from individual barrels. The Dry County tour is a great family-friendly option that is open to all ages and features a behind-the-scenes look at the distillery without the whiskey sampling at the end.

After finishing up with a guided tour, visitors can make the short walk to the Lynchburg town square to check out the historic Lynchburg Hardware & General Store or even pay their respects to the man himself at Jack Daniel’s grave in the Lynchburg City Cemetery. 280 Lynchburg Hwy., Lynchburg, Tennessee 37352, 931/759-6357, jackdaniels.com — NATHAN

Fried Fame

A renovation and expansion of the Sanders Cafe and Museum completed in 2022 offers travelers a new way to walk through a bit of fast-food history and learn about the place where Kentucky Fried Chicken got its start. In 1930, Harland Sanders (aka The Colonel) opened his first restaurant — a single table with six chairs inside a gas station — that later expanded into a much larger restaurant and adjacent motel.

After franchising sales of his famous pressure-fried chicken cooked with 11 secret herbs and spices, Sanders’ business quickly exploded into the global phenomenon that is today known simply as KFC.

The original location in Corbin, Kentucky, still operates as a functioning KFC restaurant, the difference is that you can enjoy your meal inside a large museum filled with a huge collection of memorabilia. See furniture from the original cafe, a model motel room and more.

Also on view is a reconstruction of the original Kentucky Fried Chicken kitchen, featuring a three-handed clock Sanders devised for precise timing of the chicken’s preparation. An Herb and Spice Room has vials of nearly 200 seasonings, allowing visitors to guess which are the secret 11.

The museum also displays a timeline of the business’ growth over the decades, but the real crowd pleasers here are the kitschy artifacts on display, like Colonel Sanders bobblehead

dolls and a Pez dispenser featuring the famous founder’s image.

There’s a wall detailing the “History of the Bucket” and a video loop of KFC commercials from over the years, as well as a tutorial of Sanders showing the proper preparation of fried chicken. Don’t leave without getting a photo of yourself standing beside the statue of The Colonel in his iconic white suit. 688 U.S. Highway 25 W., Corbin, Kentucky 40701, 606/528-2163, sanderscafe.com — RICH WARREN

Music Legend

Jerry Lee Lewis, Johnny Cash and the king of rock ’n’ roll himself, Elvis Presley, recorded at Sam Phillips’ small Memphis recording studio as they set out on careers that would make them music legends. Carl Perkins, B.B. King and Roy Orbison made early records here as well, and a by-then-world-famous U2 stopped in decades later to capture songs such as “Angel of Harlem” and “When Love Comes to Town” for the album that accompanied their 1988 documentary film “Rattle and Hum.”

Today, travelers can take a guided tour of Sun Studio. Radio engineer Sam Phillips opened Sun Records on Memphis’ Union Avenue in 1952, operating under the slogan “We Record Anything-Anywhere-Anytime.” Anyone could walk in off the street and pay to record a single.

During the summer of 1953, 18-year-old Elvis Presley strolled in, hoping to record “My Happiness” and “That’s When Your Heartaches Begin” onto a two-sided record. A year later,

during yet another recording session, Presley launched into a rollicking “That’s All Right.” Phillips recorded the song, and it was an immediate hit on Memphis DJ Dewey Phillips’ “Red, Hot, and Blue” radio show, launching Elvis on his trip into the stratosphere of music history.

Sun Studio offers 45-minute tours every day, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tours begin in the storefront next to the studio, where you can grab a soda or coffee and shop for souvenirs. Knowledgeable guides share the Sun Studio story as they lead guests upstairs past exhibits featuring vintage recording equipment and memorabilia.

Then, visitors are ushered down into the studio where the magic happened: You can even stand where Elvis brought his musical vision into the world. Once tours end for the day, Sun Studio returns to its roots as a working recording studio. 706 Union Ave., Memphis, Tennessee 38103, 901/521-0664, sunstudio.com — AMY BIZZARRI

On the Battlefield

History buffs know that all Americans need to put a visit to Gettysburg, Pennsylvania — the site of the largest Civil War battle and the largest-ever battle in North America — on their travel bucket lists. Although many people will enjoy a single visit and feel satisfied, others will catch the Gettysburg bug and want to come back more than once.

Whether your visit will be a one-time experience or the first of many in a lifelong passion, a trip to this charming southern Pennsylvania town should focus on touring the massive, more than 6,000-acre battlefield that surrounds it. The Battle of Gettysburg was fought July 1 through 3 in 1863. A three-day visit could explore each of the Battle of Gettysburg’s three days of fighting — exploring the area west of town on the first day and those south of town on the second and third days.

Throughout the battlefield, visitors can explore significant spots like Seminary Ridge, Cemetery Hill and Devil’s Den. Check out

monuments to each state that sent soldiers to war. More than 1,300 monuments to individual state regiments and generals astride horses stand throughout the battlefield.

Begin your visit at the Gettysburg National Military Park Museum and Visitor Center, where you can learn more about taking a guided bus tour or guided car tour of the battlefield. The museum also has a comprehensive exhibit explaining the Battle of Gettysburg and its famous cyclorama painting — an enormous, 360-degree work of art that surrounds you and brings the battle to life with an immersive visual and audio show.

Once you have toured the battlefield, you could easily spend an entire week in Gettysburg exploring the many other museums and attractions and never get bored while journeying through the region’s rich history. 1195 Baltimore Pike, Gettysburg, Pennsylvania 17325, 717/334-1124, nps.gov/gett

CAVE RUN LAKE WINCHESTER, KENTUCKY

Spanning three counties in northeastern Kentucky, the Cumberland District of Daniel Boone National Forest is home to Cave Run Lake, an 8,000-surface-acre expanse of fresh, clear water that offers some of the state’s best waterfront recreation.

Boaters looking to head out on the lake often travel to the Cumberland Ranger District Office, located off state Route 801, which has access points to the water and hiking trails in the surrounding forest, including the Sheltowee Trace National Recreation Trail.

The lake attracts visitors for boating, kayaking, sailing and swimming, with the Scott Creek Marina offering houseboat, pontoon and paddleboat rentals. Picnic areas make for an inviting lunch along the water, and two sand beaches provide places to swim. Because Cave Run Lake is known as a hot spot for muskie fishing, anglers travel to this part of Kentucky to cast their lines along the lake’s northern shore, just outside the city of Morehead.

Those looking to get away from the water can hit the trail on foot, mountain bike or horseback. The 7-mile Buckskin Trail is open to mountain bikers and hikers looking for a route that follows the shoreline. Travelers on horseback can enjoy more than 6 miles of lakeshore views from the Caney Trail.

Camping is one of the best ways to get the full Cave Run Lake experience. Hook up your RV or pitch a tent at one of Twin Knob Campground’s 200 sites. The 700-acre campground also has a store where travelers can purchase necessities like food and ice. The smaller Zilpo Campground offers 350 acres for tents and RVs, as well as rental cabins for parties of up to seven. If camping is not for you, the city of Morehead has lodging options, including commercial motels and cabin rentals with views of towering trees and distant mountaintops. Time Traveling

Fayette Historic State Park sits along the southern side of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula in an area known as Big Bay de Noc. The scenic landmark covers 711 acres, is accessible by car or boat and lets visitors step back in time to explore the site of what was once a booming industrial community.

During the 19th century, the town of Fayette produced pig-iron ingots that were integral to the development of railroads and steel. Fayette Brown, a then-agent for Cleveland’s Jackson Iron Co., chose the site for its unmatched natural resources. Wood from the town’s surrounding forests was

burned to fuel furnaces, while dolomite from the bordering white limestone cliffs purified the iron ore that would be transported through the harbor.

Although the Jackson Iron Co. halted its smelting business in 1891, this industrial town’s story survived after the state of Michigan acquired the site in 1959. The white limestone cliffs, while closed to the public, hold what are believed to be 1,400-year-old cedar trees, making this Michigan state park home to one of the nation’s oldest living forests. Today, visitors can admire 20 preserved structures that tell the story of Fayette, including a hotel, machine shop and town hall. Travelers can also walk through an enormous blast furnace complex that once fueled the town’s iron-smelting operation (except the sections that still have remnants from the last time the furnace was fired in 1891). History buffs can enhance their experience with a trip to the park’s visitor center or by scheduling a guided tour, available mid-June through August.

Those travelling by boat can dock at the marina equipped with 15 transient slips. On-site amenities like picnic tables and access to restrooms and showers make for an ideal day trip or camping overnight. 4785 II Rd., Garden, Michigan 49835, 906/644-2603, michigandnr.com/parksandtrails — BROOKE McCAFFREY

Island Time MIDDLE BASS ISLAND, OHIO

Middle Bass Island sits in Lake Erie’s western basin, just a 40-minute ride on the Miller Ferry from Port Clinton. With only three restaurants and a coffee shop, it’s a quiet alternative to its neighbor South Bass Island and the summer revelry that accompanies a trip to Put-in-Bay.

As the ferry nears the dock, the iconic Lonz Winery comes into view. The historic structure, which has been the island’s most recognizable feature since 1866, is part of Middle Bass Island State Park. The restored building displays exhibits in the wine cellar where visitors can see artifacts from the property and learn how wine was made here.

From there, visitors can rent a kayak or bicycle at Middle Bass State Park Marina and paddle along the island’s shoreline to take in views of quaint cottages, migratory birds and neighboring islands. Those who want to delve deeper into nature can visit the walking trails at East Point Preserve or the Forested Wetland Preserve. Bird-watchers frequent Petersen’s

Woods to look for eagles, which have nested there in the past.

After a morning of exploring, refuel with a specialty pizza or sandwich from Uncle Joe’s Pizza at the Middle Bass General Store. While there, you can also pick up any necessities, from snacks to island souvenirs. Travelers looking to take it easy can spend an afternoon at J.F. Walleye’s family-friendly wading pool. If you stick around for dinner, try the restaurant’s namesake walleye bites.

Those looking for nightlife as afternoon stretches into evening can find it at Middle Bass Island’s tiki-themed resort, St. Hazard’s, where live music and drinks by the pool are a great complement to island sunsets. For travelers who want to make more than a day of it, Middle Bass Island has a range of accommodations, from primitive camping to home rentals. Prairie Revival MIDEWIN NATIONAL TALLGRASS PRAIRIE WILMINGTON, ILLINOIS

Midewin National Tallgrass Prairie sits just an hour southwest of Chicago, but it feels centuries away, boasting a landscape our pioneer forebears would easily recognize. With its remnants of the old farmstead where four generations of the Schumacher family lived and stands of black walnut, oak, hickory and Osage orange trees (the latter identifiable by their intricately twisted bark and pebbled green fruit), the 20,000-acre prairie seems like a place forgotten by time.

Yet the site was not always as pristine and undisturbed as it appears today. The prairie was the former home of Joliet Arsenal, the largest producer of artillery in the U.S. until the end of the Vietnam War. A statue depicting a worker at the arsenal, which is located near the Iron Bridge Trailhead, pays tribute to those who served on the home front during wartime.

Today, most of the former Joliet Arsenal buildings are gone, replaced by a sprawling space that helps Illinois live up to its moniker as the Prairie State. Travelers may spot bison roaming the tall grasses. In 2015, 27 of the animals were introduced as a restoration project. The idea was that the presence of the bison and their natural actions, like the way they graze and wallow, could help boost the regrowth of native prairie plant life. Because bison are enormous animals, they are best viewed at a distance. Consider taking a guided or self-guided hike to the bison viewing station. Bring binoculars if you have them, but scopes are available as well. (For a head start on bison viewing, you can always tune into the preserve’s online bison cam.)

Midewin National Tallgrass Prairie also has more than 33 miles of trails open to the public for nonmotorized recreation. Nature abounds here, as the area is home to more than 100 species of birds and a myriad of endangered flora. 30239 S. St. Rte. 53, Wilmington, Illinois 60481, 815/423-6370, fs.usda.gov/midewin

Saddle Up

Kentucky has long been synonymous with horses, so there is perhaps no better way to explore the Bluegrass State than by saddling up in Pikeville. The eastern Kentucky city is much more than the place where the Hatfield and McCoy feud happened. It’s also home to Muddy Boots, a horseback-tour operation that takes riders out on a rugged, 2.5-mile loop through the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains.

Book a guided tour by yourself or bring a group to experience a trek together. The horses themselves are experts of this trail, making them the perfect companion for those new to horseback riding.

Each excursion begins with a getting-toknow-you session between horse and rider at the stables’ on-site riding ring, where you can take a few laps to get comfortable before hitting the trail. The ring is also ADA-friendly, allowing visitors of all abilities to enjoy a ride, even if not on the main trail. Motorized and manual wheelchairs are available for access to the ring.

Once you’re on the trail, keep an eye out for wildlife native to the region, such as elk, turkeys and foxes. Views from the ride include Bob Amos Park, the Pikeville City Park where Muddy Boots’ home, H&M Stables, is located. Along the loop, riders can stop off and enjoy views from the scenic overlook, peering out across the surrounding dense forests and the historic city center of Pikeville, where travelers can find lodging and restaurant options.

Horseback tours are reserved for those ages 10 and up, but Bob Amos Park offers a variety of other activities, from paddleboat rentals on the pond to hiking trails ranging from easy to difficult. The pond also draws those with kayaks and canoes, both of which can be rented on-site. 500 Bob Amos Dr., Pikeville, Kentucky 41501, 606/794-9881, visitpikeville.com

Although West Virginia is known for its towering mountains, Lost World Caverns in the small town of Lewisburg caters to underground adventurers. The 120-foot-high main chamber houses huge stalagmites and stalactites, and the cave is filled with amazing rock formations that have sat undisturbed for eons.

Whimsical formations like Smurf Village, Pigtail and Ice Cream Castle are favorites for the whole family to view on the 45-minute, selfguided walking tour. The 5-million-year-old Goliath is 40 feet high with a 25-foot circumference. The Snowy Chandelier in the cavern is documented as one of the largest compound stalactites in the United States.

Many of the formations glisten with beads of water, while others like Bridal Veil and The Crystal Waterfall sparkle from the thousands of calcite crystals embedded within them.

Don’t miss the platform that allows visitors to gaze 12 stories upward to see the cave’s only natural entrance. Near the far end of the cave, away from today’s man-made entrance, listen carefully and you may hear the echo of the cavern’s flowing, underground river.

The cave can be easily traversed by walkways and stone staircases that wind on for a half mile. Though summer is the perfect time to see this centuries-old wonder, closed-toe shoes and a light jacket are recommended as the cave stays at a consistent 52 degrees.

The truly adventurous can sign up for an expedition into deeper and wilder portions of the cave. After four hours of crawling, climbing and scrambling with only a helmet light to illuminate the way, explorers are rewarded with a 360-degree view of wondrous formations.

After touring the cave, come back to the surface to enjoy a picnic on the grounds or take a spin through the gift shop. 907 Lost World Rd., Lewisburg, West Virginia 24901, 304/645-6677, lostworldcaverns.com —

Southern Indiana is a land of caves, winding roads, hills and hollows, but it is also home to the 8,800-surface-acre Patoka Lake. As the secondlargest reservoir lake in the state, there’s plenty to do during the summer months.

Start with a wine tasting at the Patoka Lake Winery, home to delightfully sweet wine slushies. For food options, stop by Hoosier Hills Marina on the other side of the lake for wings, pizza and sandwiches at The Idle Zone restaurant. Get the most out of the lake’s recreational opportunities with fishing, boating and swimming, or simply lounge on the beach where you may even hear the call of an eagle or osprey passing over.

Patoka Lake Marina in Birdseye offers an array of lodging, including houseboats with mul-

tiple bedrooms, fully equipped kitchens, full baths, outdoor gas grills and lounge chairs on deck for watching the stars and getting some sun. Houseboats offer the chance to pull up anchor each morning and explore the lake’s expansive coastline with its many coves and inlets. Near the swimming beach, boaters can drop anchor and jump in. Along the shore, visit the Patoka Lake Nature Center or follow the rugged, 6.5-mile Main Trail that includes the chance to see Totem Rock, a large rock shelter used by Native Americans and early settlers. A 2-mile loop trail illustrates wildlife-management policies employed at the park, while the short Garden Rock Loop Trail offers a hilly walk that can be completed in less than 45 minutes. Those looking to get out on the water with a bit of luxury can climb aboard the 60-foot Patoka Voyager cruise ship, which offers a variety of excursions, including those centered around sunset, wine tasting and wildlife viewing. Sitting atop Spruce Mountain at an elevation of 4,863 feet above sea level, Spruce Knob offers outdoor enthusiasts some of the best unspoiled wilderness West Virginia has to offer. Situated within the 100,000-acre Spruce KnobSeneca Rocks National Recreation Area and part of the Monongahela National Forest, Spruce Knob is perfect for those looking to enjoy a day hike, backpacking trip or a picnic for two while watching the sun set behind the mountain scenery.

About a 30-minute drive from the nearby town of Seneca Rocks, Spruce Knob is accessible by vehicle in the warmer months. A nearby highlight is an observation tower, located along a gravel trail just 900 feet from the public parking area.

Those looking to enjoy the lay of the land can trek along the Whispering Spruce Trail. This half-mile, gravel route encircles Spruce Knob and features interpretive signs that detail the history of the knob and its surroundings. The trail also features multiple scenic overlooks,

making for a great stop for both budding and experienced nature photographers.

One natural phenomenon occurring at Spruce Knob is the appearance of deformed red spruce trees, with growth only on one side due to the strong westerly winds against the trees. While the red spruce is the most plentiful tree on Spruce Knob, yellow birch, sugar maple and eastern hemlock trees also grow in the area.

Travelers looking to take on a more extensive hike can choose from nearly 60 miles of trails throughout the area, including the 3.5-mile Seneca Rocks Trail. The 25-acre Spruce Knob Lake is stocked with trout for those more interested in casting a line than a day’s hike. Backpackers seeking primitive overnight accommodations can choose from the nearby Spruce Knob Lake Campground or Gatewood Campground. Those seeking hotels will find them in the nearby towns of Seneca Rocks, Riverton and Elkins. For more information and directions to Spruce Knob, visit fs.usda.gov/mnf. — NATHAN HAVENNER

HISTORY & CULTURE

Plenty of famous figures throughout American history were born in Kentucky, including the charismatic Muhammad Ali. Channel your own greatness at the Muhammad Ali Center in Louisville. While the museum and cultural center invites visitors to discover the famed boxer and activist’s life through video presentations, artifacts — such as fight-worn gloves and trunks, trophies and promotional fight posters — and a timeline of his life and accomplishments, the space is also meant to inspire.

Six sections of the museum are dedicated to Ali’s core principles: confidence, conviction, dedication, giving, respect and spirituality. In the dramatic Conviction Pavilion, interpretive panels and news reels retell the story of Ali’s refusal to join the U.S. Army after being drafted during the Vietnam War, while the Giving Pavilion shares his philanthropy. (He was a supporter of the Make-A-Wish Foundation and the Special Olympics). The center, which is

part of the United States Civil Rights Trail, also features an interactive exhibit space where you can try shadow boxing, punching a speed bag and more.

BOURBON TOURS

According to the Kentucky Distillers’ Association, the state’s bourbon industry is worth $9 billion, resulting in 22,500 jobs. But it’s about more than that. The ingredients, including mineral-rich limestone water, come from the land. Plus, it’s a tradition that dates to before Kentucky was even a state. Bourbon is a great reason to visit, and many iconic distilleries are open for tours and tastings, such as the Stitzel-Weller Distillery, which opened on Derby Day in 1935, and the Evan Williams Bourbon Experience, one of the first distilleries on Louisville’s Whiskey Row.

Southeast of Louisville, you’ll know you’re in the right place when you see the black buildings and red shutters of the Maker’s Mark Distillery in Loretto. Located on the 1,000-acre Star Hill Farm, Maker’s Mark opened its doors in 1953 and offers tours, tastings and a restaurant. While the standard Maker’s Mark Tour takes visitors through the expansive distillery and bourbonmaking process (including a guided tasting), the Behind the Bourbon tour is for true aficionados. The deep-dive experience is detailed and technical, taking guests through the distillery, warehouse, cellar, cistern and bottling area, before ending, of course, with a bourbon tasting.

Founded more than 60 years after Maker’s Mark, Newport’s New Riff Distilling in northern Kentucky offers just that: a fresh spin on the tradition of following the Bottled-in-Bond Act of 1897, which set out rules that require spirits such as whiskey to be aged and bottled according to a set of legal regulations. Housed in an industrialstyle glass-and-steel building, the distillery, which was founded in 2014, offers tastings of its flagship straight or single-barrel bourbon and four different tour experiences. The Blend tour gives whiskey fans the chance to learn the ins and outs of combining bourbons from more than one barrel, creating their own personal riff.

HORSE HERITAGE

If bourbon is the lifeblood of Kentucky, horses are its beating heart, which is why mint juleps are such an apt accompaniment on Derby Day. Whether or not you’re lucky enough to be at Churchill Downs the first Saturday in May, the Kentucky Derby Museum next door to the famed racetrack in Louisville will give you a taste of the experience year-round. Across two floors, the museum features more than a dozen exhibit areas covering past winners, stories of the jockeys and the first electric starting gate used at the race. New for this year is an exhibit

honoring Secretariat, the horse that won the Triple Crown in 1973.

Get even closer to the majestic animals at Lexington’s Horse Park . The Equine Theme Park features four museums (including the Smithsonian affiliate International Museum of the Horse), the Big Barn with draft horse demonstrations and the Parade of Breeds Show, where you can take photos and pet the horses. Race fans can also meet retired former champion horses, including Funny Cide and Point Given. If that’s still not up close and personal enough for you, the park offers horseback trail and pony rides to complete the equine experience.

To meet more winning steeds, head to Old Friends Farm a retirement retreat fit for champions. The 236-acre main Dream Chase Farm, along with three satellite facilities, is home to more than 240 retired former racehorses and breeding stallions, including Triple Crown race winners Birdstone, Ruler on Ice, Sarava and Touch Gold. Old Friends offers a handful of tours, including one led by founder Michael Blowen, who leads visitors on a 90-minute jaunt while introducing 10 to 15 resident horses such as 1997 Kentucky Derby winner Silver Charm. The Every Horse on the Farm Tour is exactly what it sounds like: You get to see the more than 150 horses that live at Dream Chase Farm.
